I HATE MOVING
Posted 10 years agoGAH so moving into the third (and hopefully final) home this year. been super busy with packing and preparations and all of that jazz so things have been going a little slower, sorry!! i just found out that internet can take anywhere between 2-6 days to get hooked up so idk what i'm going to do if it takes that long gahh
this place I'm moving into is far more expensive with rent and household expenses than I'm used to so i will really be forced to see how hard i can push myself with art alone. i'm both nervous and optimistic so wish me luck!!

Best art tutorial site/online art school?
Posted 10 years agoHI GUYS so the time has come yet again where I am super dissatisfied with my art and lately I feel like I am running around in circles unable to define a style
I really want to improve but there's such a surplus of information out there I've been having a hard time finding a direction to start studying. I've been doing gesture every day and trying just to sketch more (normally I NEVER sketch except for commissions) but like I said I'm totally lacking direction. And I'm someone who needs a structure and very specific plan of action.
I've considered doing some online clasess but I can't seem to find the online art schools I was looking at before?? I know of Schoolism but can't find anything else like that. Also there was a huge site full of digital recorded art tuts but I can't find that either (my bookmarks have decided to disappear)
SO if you guys have any site/school/tutorial recommendations let me knowww luv uuuu

Choosing between two passions...
Posted 10 years agoThose of you who know me know I'm a very driven person. Once I find something I'm passionate about, I put my all into it.... but my issue has always been conflicted between two passions.
I love both art and holistic nutrition.
On one hand, I have this great community of friends here on FA who support my work and I feel like I've already got my foot in the door to be a successful artist. All I need to do is really turn on my focus and get back to when I would live in my studies and improve in leaps and bounds (and work on my marketing).
On the other hand, I've been obsessed with healthy living and fitness for the past 3 or so years. I've been really considering going to school so I can help people lead a healthier lifestyle and educate them on what they eat. It's just with nutrition I feel like such a small fish in a big pond and I don't know if I have anything to say that hasn't already been said. I don't think I have anything innovative to add to the overload of info already out there. That being said, I haven't gone to school so I could be introduced to something that offers me a different perspective.
It's important to me that at some point I start teaching (whether it's art or nutrition), and art is something I can see eventually making tutorials and mentorship and youtube vlogs etc. I'd love to have a blog dedicated to healthy living and stuff but like I said there's just SO much competition that I feel really intimidated.
artist pros: -foot in door
-abundance of free knowledge
- can more easily educate
artist cons: embarrassed about furry art
- making art doesn't help anyone or change their lives
- don't know what I would do outside of commission work
- full time could potentially kill the passion
- taxes, completely self-reliant (no benefits)
nutritionist pros: respectable, source of pride
- helps people change their lives
- encourages me to continue pursuing a healthy lifestyle
- can do art on the side for myself
- makes more money, benefits
nutritionist cons: intimidating, small fish big pond
- no semblance of a following, would be starting from scratch
- need to get into better shape to represent
- need to go to school/costs money
- need to be more outgoing/extroverted
I'm not asking for you to help me choose which to pursue or anything, I just kind of needed to rant and maybe hear some of your advice if you've got any.

Commission *WAITLIST* Closed!
Posted 10 years agoEDIT: No longer unlimited. Got more interest than anticipated so I'll be limiting to 5 wait-list spots and see how I go from there. :) Thanks guys!
Hi guys! I wanted to try something different... a wait-list! I mentioned this before and had kind of mixed review but I decided to try it out and see if anyone would be interested.
I'll open up an unlimited waitlist, but it's a fee of $10 per pic. If you are interested, note/comment and I'll ask for the $10 so that I can write you down on my queue for next week... then you don't have to worry about watching journals to snatch a slot! Also not sure if I should do a flat $10 rate or a percentage of what you want (if any waitlist at all)? Let me know what you think!
Just to be safe it might be best to tell me what you're interested in getting so that I can approve it before you give me any money. :)
Thanks in advance to anyone who's interested!

Updates!
Posted 10 years agoHey guys! Sorry for the lack of updates.
I'm in the process of moving to another place (another temporary place, will only be there until the first of June) so I have been busy with packing and cleaning. I have two commissions left on my queue and then I will be opening up again soon.
I've really been struggling with motivation to do any artwork lately. When I do have time available to me, absolutely nothing turns out right.... such a bad block. Perhaps it's because I burnt myself out with working so hard so long, but what's more plausible is that I'm second-guessing whether or not I want to continue pursuing art full time.
I've always teetered between art and nutrition for a career... and I've been considering going to school to become a holistic nutritionist (which wouldn't be until next year). One thing about nutrition that's so appealing to me is that it would finally allow me to create art for myself. I haven't made something 100% for me in such a long time, and for that matter haven't made a piece of work that I thoroughly enjoyed working on or even one with a final product I really loved in the past months.
As passionate as I am about art, I must admit it's really hard to pursue it as a career and not have it suck the passion out of you (at least, in my experience). I'm hoping it's just a temporary rut I'm in. I'm going to try really hard today to find my rhythm again.
I think I just need to spend some time looking at art that inspires me. I've been so absorbed in nutrition lately that my looking at art has completely taken a spot on the back burner. I think maybe I just need to mix things up a bit and find a new process or a new style or something. Maybe even take some time off to do some personal work? SIGH. Wish me luck! I apologize for the wait/silence.
Let me know what inspires you in the comments!

PORN ARTISTS... pls read!!
Posted 10 years agoHEY GUYS! So. Adult artwork. I love depicting suggestive themes (with the female form in particular), but I've always been very hesitant to venture into the XXX realm.... I have a few questions that I figured, who better to ask than the artists themselves??
So for those of you who draw R rated artwork, does anyone in your family circle know what you do? Any of your friends or your significant other? What do they think about it?
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork?
ALSO... for just fulltime artists in general, what the hell do you do for taxes? LOL. Do you have to pay a ton for taxes...? And do you include your entire income when you file the taxes or do you kind of lie a bit?
THANKS IN ADVANCED... don't need to answer ALL of these questions if you don't feel like it but I really appreciate how you guys handle this stuff. Most people in my life already know I'm a fulltime artist, but I'm very hesitant to show them my work because of the furry content... and I'd be significantly more nervous if the majority of my work was porn. ANY WORDS OF WISDOM, FELLOWS? <3

Short delay on commissions
Posted 10 years agoHey guys. I'm currently dealing with a monumental amount of stress/confusion. I haven't been able to focus on art of any kind these past few days and I'm really trying to get myself back into it but I think I need to let some things settle. I'm really hoping it will go away in a few days so please bear with me. Sorry for the inconvenience.
6k Watches AHHH!! also... Patreon?
Posted 10 years agoYAY I have been waiting for this milestone for so long.
I really can't thank you guys enough for showing interest in my work. Whether you commission, comment, fav or even just follow and quietly lurk, I sincerely appreciate it.
As most of you know after some annoying circumstances/confusion I was out of a job and left with really no other option than to do art full time, and now I really believe that was a blessing in disguise. I feel as though I've really hit my stride and I'm producing more art than ever and I'm really enjoying it too. I'm happy to announce that I'm capable of making a living at my current rate that will allow me to save up to move out in the next couple months thanks to the support of all you wonderful people.
That being said, with all the time I've been pouring into commissions (not that I'm complaining!!) I haven't really had the energy/time to focus on improvement. I've been seriously looking into Patreon (after
thebravelittle's preaching) as a means of balancing improvement and personal work as well as commission-work.
I have a couple tier options in mind including discounted commission raffles as well as a tier specifically for practicing artists with whom I'll kind of 'mentor' with my existing/future knowledge and techniques and offer critique/red-lines to. It would be through Skype in like a small group of 10ish people (assuming anyone's interested) for like $15 bucks a month... What do you guys think of that? Too expensive or just right, orr?
If I became successful enough with Patreon I'd also love to spend some time developing characters and fleshing out a plot for a sci-fi/fantasy comic I have in mind. ;w;
Anyway let me know your thoughts!! Also a big THANK YOU to all you lovely people!

Good Cheap Desktop Computer????
Posted 10 years agoHey guys! So I'm looking into getting a new computer because currently I'm only using a laptop that's fairly old.
I have an HP Pavillion desktop but it's not compatible with my Cintiq 13HD (I've tried absolutely everything and I can't figure it out) so I'm willing to invest in a completely new computer. My laptop functions fine but I don't think it would handle Photoshop and streaming well.
Do you guys have any recommendations for what I should get? I know virtually nothing about computers. I don't need anything crazy high-tech, I just want to be able to run Photoshop/SAI without lagging and I really don't want to spend more than 400 bucks. And if you know for certain that it works with the Cintiq that would be a huge bonus.
Thanks so much in advance!

Commission WAITLIST
Posted 10 years agoHey guys!! So I have 2 more commissions on my queue and then I will be back open. I've been trying to figure out a way to give the people who aren't around as frequently to stalk my journals a chance to snag a slot because I realize that can be really frustrating, but if I open a free waitlist I imagine the same problem of the limited slots filling up would still be an issue, so the only other way I can think of would be offering a waitlist with a $10 reservation fee or a bribe of some sort.
What do you guys think of that? I really don't want to come off as money-hungry, I just can't think of another way that makes a slot more accessible to those who have a busy schedule (and I know my openings are really sporadic).
If you're interested, let me know in the comments! If you have a better idea that is more fair, also tell me that! Thanks a bunch guys!

Guess I'm FULLTIME ARTIST again...
Posted 10 years agoSo I just found out I've been laid off from my brand new job because I was considered a seasonal. I worked two freaking shifts and I started after Christmas... what was even the point of hiring me at all? UGH. I'm incredibly frustrated because I desperately need money in order to move out, so I'm back to doing art full time. I'm really lucky I have art as an option to turn to at all, otherwise I would be completely screwed.
That being said, I have one commission to finish up (which should be done come tomorrow) so I will be opening up commissions again within a day or two, so keep a look-out. Thanks again for your continued support, it really means a lot to me. <3

Art Goals for 2015
Posted 10 years agoSO I think I've established that I absolutely love new years in that it calls for RESOLUTIONS! I'm really excited to see where this year takes me artistically and otherwise. That being said, I think it calls for some art goals to keep me on track to make some serious progress come the end of the year. This journal is mostly for my own sake of having something to look back on, but hopefully someone will gain something from my previous discoveries!
- Find a consistent style and perfect it.
- Improve perspective and include more of it in my pieces.
- Depict more character interaction as well as interaction with environment.
- Develop back-stories for my existing characters and new characters to come.
- Practice varying textures.
- Practice adding more detail.
- Cleaner work.
- Continue studying anatomy (particularly paws and hands)
And for reference, these are realizations I've had in the past year...
- I enjoy combining line art with soft, blended shading.
- Thin lineart looks better in my style.
- Playing with high saturation in the light and a low saturation/grey within the shadows gives more volume.
- COLOURED LINES.
- Gradients look fab.
- Highlights look best on luminosity layer.
- Complete background before shading character.
- Working from dark to light is really efficient.
- Combining both soft and hard edges in shading.
- Blurring the background and edges helps draw attention to the subject.
I'll add on to this if I can think of anything. I know I've made a journal like this already but let me know in the comments what your art resolutions are/and if you made any progressive discoveries in art.

Role play???
Posted 10 years agoDoes anyone role play? I really want to develop some plots and character interaction. I haven't written in a long time so I am dying to get back into it. I don't want a bunch of sex rp (although it may be a product of our characters interacting, it is in no way my focus. If you have a particular website you like, link me up! It doesn't necessarily have to be furry.
I am pretty picky with who I rp with. I love more advanced writers who are descriptive but not obnoxiously flowery. If I don't feel inspired by you don't take it personally by any means as I am looking for something relatively specific.
I am looking for something long term. We can either develop a plot or come up with a setting and wing it. It doesn't need to be romantic. Either male or female, based in modern, fantasy, futuristic, what have you. I'm really open with plot and setting. I will choose what character Ill use once we figure out the other deets.
If it's a group rp I can use Skype or forums, otherwise notes or email works for me. Lemme know if you're interested/have any suggestions!!

2014 in Retrospect
Posted 10 years agoHey guys! Long time no speak.
I've been very busy with things so I haven't updated nearly as much as I'd like, but things are going great and I'm terribly excited to start off the new year on a new leaf.
A lot has changed this year. Early in the year, I decided I just wanted to do art as a hobby and I really wanted to pursue holistic nutrition. I quit my job in retail and moved to the city, and I had a revelation that made me realize art really was my passion and it really is possible to make money doing what it is I love.
After that point I would wake up at 7am every morning, walk to a fast food joint just to sit in the corner, throw some headphones on and study art for a couple hours. I did that for a few weeks and I produced what I feel is some of my best work that month. Unfortunately life got a little crazy after that, and although I was still producing work and living solely off of my art income, I wasn't making enough to really contribute to my savings and instead was slowly losing money.
I'm currently living back in my old city and got a job back in retail, but I'm really not discouraged about it. I feel like it will give me an opportunity to focus on me while simultaneously bringing in some income. I do eventually want to return to a full-time artist, but I need some extra cashflow to get my life in order and what have you. :) I will still be taking commissions, but a little less infrequently.
How about you guys, how was your year? And for artists, did you make any important artistic discoveries this year? I know there's still 10 days left but STILL I AM EXCITED.
