hey! you! get onto my cloud
Posted 14 years agoI'd been thinking about putting some of my music up on SoundCloud for a while now, and I finally got around to it the other day (just one song so far, but I'll start to put more up soon).
Why should you bother if you already keep tabs on me here? I don't know lol. I won't lie; I probably won't be uploading anything there that won't also be here. BUT, if you're not already familiar with SoundCloud, they have a cool feature that allows you to leave comments at any given moment in a recording, and have the comment show up at that particular moment. No need to say, "I really like that part at 2 minutes, 48 seconds"-- you simply leave your comment at 2 minutes, 48 seconds. The uploader can do the same, giving listeners insight into any part of the recording that they wish to. It's pretty sweet. Check it out when you get a chance! Thanks.

NEW DRAMA ARMADA SONG
Posted 14 years agoit's official: i'm a twit(terer)
Posted 14 years agoSo, I finally took one step into the 21st century by joining Twitter this morning. Truly the end of the world is upon us lol. It seemed to make sense, though, as I find myself less inclined to write full-length FA and LJ journal entries these days. Still, it's going to be very difficult to limit anything I want to say to 140 characters. But at least now I can participate in Jimmy Fallon's 'Late Night Hashtags'! :D
As of right now, I only have one follower, and it's a complete stranger... so, if anybody wants to follow me there, I'm at http://twitter.com/#!/isol8d_incident (after Isolated Incident, one of my old 'bands'). What will I be tweeting? I'm not entirely sure yet, but I promise you I won't be one of those people tweeting every 5 minutes to tell you what they just ate, what color their pee is, etc. It will probably also not be furry-related stuff. I'm trying to establish a place or two online where I can send my friends and family both inside and outside the furry community, as I don't really have a good place to do that right now. I'm sure I'll try to make it fairly humorous.
Try... and fail.

new projects, old projects
Posted 15 years agoAfter yet another period of relative creative inactivity, it looks like things may be starting to ramp up again. Funny how you can go for so long with nothing happening and then all of a sudden, several different opportunities can pop up completely independent of each other.
Got an idea for a new Drama Armada song Friday, and Sedge and I started working on it on Saturday. I wasn't going to say anything about it so that it would be a surprise when we suddenly released a new song with FurFright nowhere in sight lol, but I'm too excited (sorry Sedge, hope you don't mind me spilling the beans). We're going to try to get it finished and on FA as soon as we can, without sacrificing the level of quality that we hope people have come to expect from us.
The second thing that will hopefully get the creative juices flowing again is that FAWM (February Album Writing Month) is little more than a week away. I don't expect to complete the 14-song challenge this year, but I'm hoping to get at least one or two new songs out of it.
Finally, I had something kind of interesting happen last weekend. I got a phone call from an old friend of mine named Dan, who I met during my last year at college. After graduation, he went to work at a cable access station here in Massachusetts, and the two of us appeared in a couple of shows on that station during the mid-'90s. One was "Trivia Challenge" (check out the theme song!), a live call-in trivia show that we created and co-hosted, and which ended up winning a Hometown Video Award (kind of like the cable access equivalent of an Emmy). The other was "So Much To Say", a sketch comedy show that we joined the cast of when it left another station and came to ours. Well apparently, Dan has been back in touch with one of the other guys from the sketch comedy show, and there's been talk of us getting back together to try to work on some new stuff. This would be awesome, because I've been wanting to do some more sketch comedy stuff for quite a while now. Obviously, things have changed a lot since 1995, and if we filmed new stuff now, it'd go up on the internet rather than on cable access TV.
I've also just discovered that there are a few clips from the old show up on YouTube (I'd checked before with no results-- it looks like they were only put up a couple of months ago). I'm not in most of them (like I said, Dan and I joined the cast after they'd already been around for a while), but I found one of my favorite ones that I did appear in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytbQy1kxnfs
(Yes, I know, there's a way to embed YouTube videos, but I'm concerned about the poster of the video being able to trace the embedding back to this site. If my old castmates are going to find out about me being a furry, I want it to be because I decided to tell them.)
I'm the smart-mouthed teenager (third from the left at the dinner table). While watching, please keep in mind, this was cable access. No budget, no production value, no audience lol.

random ramblings
Posted 15 years agoWent to karaoke last weekend with a bunch of friends, and had one of the best times I've had in a very long time. I sang "She Blinded Me With Science", "(I Just) Died In Your Arms", and "Christmas At Ground Zero". But for me, the highlight of the evening-- nay, of my entire karaoke existence-- was rocking out on Yes' "Roundabout" with
belicbear. 8 1/2 minutes long? Extended instrumental solos? It's the song karaoke was made for lol! Oh my God, was that fun. Bear also joined
sedge onstage for "Fairytale Of New York", which was pretty damn sweet. And the whole gang got up at the end to sing "Do They Know It's Christmas?".
Came home from the weekend to find out that while I was gone, there was a bit of a scare in my building. The woman who lives two floors directly below my condo unit apparently fell asleep while smoking, and ignited her mattress. Disaster was averted, thank God, but now I'm hearing that this is actually the second time that this has happened with this same woman, so I'm not exactly feeling very safe. My mom and I have seen ample evidence that this woman is an alcoholic, so I can't help but fear that she'll keep passing out with cigarettes burning until she eventually succeeds in burning our building to the ground, possibly with us inside it. So, yeah. There's that to look forward to.
This next complaint's pretty petty, but I feel like venting. We've been having trouble with our cable service all day. It went out completely earlier for an hour or two, and ever since it came back, my picture has been scrambling almost constantly. I've called Comcast, and they say that the issue that resulted in the outage earlier has been resolved. Well, it doesn't look very 'resolved' from my end. They're going to send someone out on Monday if it doesn't fix itself by then, but that means that I'm going to miss several programs I'd planned on watching, including tonight's "Saturday Night Live", and a repeat of this year's "Simpsons" Halloween episode tomorrow night (which I've been specifically waiting for them to air again, since I missed it the first time around). I'm getting pretty sick of companies telling you that they're always making improvements, when they're not. Improvements? I'm looking at a scrambled frickin' screen. This didn't happen before TV went digital. But yeah, Comcast. You go on and keep telling me how much better everything is now. I have a little extra time to listen to your spiel, now that I can't watch my shows.
Christmas has snuck up on me yet again. I really haven't done anything to get ready for it... but I guess it wouldn't be me if I were actually prepared. Been getting Christmas cards in the mail for the past few days. Is it weird that I kind of wish that people just wouldn't bother? For example, I just got a card from a cousin of mine and his wife. These are relatives that I never see. I've seen them once, maybe twice tops, in the last 5 years. The wife, I honestly wouldn't recognize if I came within two feet of her while walking down the street. And while it may be really nice that they remembered me and sent me a card, the only way I seem to be able to look at it is that now there's an obligation on my part to respond in some way. And I hate feeling obligated to do something. There's nothing that makes me want to do something less than feeling like I have to. I don't know how to explain it; either you get it or you don't. It's not that I don't care about them. They're family, of course I care. I think it's just part of my whole depression package, tied into the general lack of motivation that I have. That and the fact that it's been years since I've been at all close to this cousin, and as I said, his wife is virtually a stranger to me. I just don't really have anything to say to them.
The title track from the new Duran Duran album, All You Need Is Now, has been released on iTunes, and a truncated, 9-track version of the album is being debuted there this Tuesday. I'm not on iTunes so I'll have to procure it through other channels, but I don't feel too guilty about that, as I'll definitely buy the full-length album when it's released in February. The new song is pretty good, but I'm not hearing the 'return to their classic sound' that the band and the album's producer, Mark Ronson, have been promising. And honestly, that's just fine with me. One of my favorite things about Duran Duran is that they've never tried to repeat themselves, and I don't want them to start doing it now. By promising an "imaginary follow-up to Rio", as Ronson has done in the press, all they're doing is issuing a promise that's almost impossible to keep. And not for nothing, but there already was a follow-up to Rio. It was called Seven And The Ragged Tiger, and it kicked ass. Hopefully, this new album will be great too (popmatters.com gave it a 9 out of 10)... but if it's all the same to you, Simon and Co., I'm just gonna go ahead and look at it as the follow-up to Red Carpet Massacre, 'k? 'K.
Had one of the most bizarre and graphically violent dreams of my life last night. It was about a group of cops who were trying to kill someone (at times me, at times someone else, as the perspective in the dream kept shifting) in order to keep him from blowing the whistle on them for being irresponsible with their firearms in the police station. In one part of the dream, a guy who was trying to help protect the targeted individual got a power drill through his head (which I'm sure showed up in my dream because I was going through the free movies on Comcast's On Demand service last night and noticed Body Double among the offerings-- that drill scene always creeped me out). But the weirdest thing about it had to be that several actors/celebrities showed up in the dream, playing different parts. One of the corrupt cops was Thomas F. Wilson, who played Biff Tannen in the Back To The Future films, and at some points, the person trying to get away from the cops was played by, of all people, Justin freaking Bieber LOL. I'm at a loss to explain that one. Not sure I even want to look too deeply into it lol.
That's about it for now.

furfright report and new song
Posted 15 years agoNow that I've had a couple of days to recuperate, it's time for my FurFright 2010 con report (which will be mercifully brief, since I spent most of the weekend working in the Charity Room).
In short, the con kicked ass. With the exception of a few small snags here and there, everything seemed to run pretty smoothly, despite FurFright's continued growth in both attendance and programming.
The charity fundraising effort was an indisputable success. I believe that the total announced at the closing ceremonies was $12,114.78, but that's just a preliminary total. It's only going to go up from there. This is the kind of amount that is typically raised by conventions with three or four times the attendance of our con, so this really speaks to the kindness and the generosity of the people who attend FurFright. If you did anything to help us reach this unbelievable total, no matter how small, thank you. A piece of this victory belongs to you.
And speaking of victory, on a personal note,
sedge and I took home 1st Prize in the Masquerade for our new
dramaarmada song! If you haven't already, please go check it out! We hope that it becomes one of your favorite things. :)

Posted 15 years agoEarlier this morning, I read a very unfavorable review of last night's live 30 Rock episode, which referred to it as "vaudevillian" and an "overheated slice of self-indulgence and excess". I thought that the review was pretty unfair, so I left the following comment:
"OK, this wasn't 30 Rock's finest (half) hour, but come on, it wasn't that bad. When you take a show that's normally pre-filmed and change it into a live show with a studio audience, of course there are going to be changes in pacing and overall feel. Even the style of humor will need to be tweaked in order to get the desired result from your live audience. These things are to be expected, and if you were taken by surprise by them, then that's due to your own lack of insight. Would I want to see the show done this way every week? No. But it was an interesting experiment, and personally, I'd welcome its return on a one-episode-per-season basis."
Two hours later, another user replied:
"I agree with Missy Kiffa!--You go Girl!"
Really? Misidentifying my gender with "You go Girl" wasn't enough... you actually had to insert "Missy" before by name, just to twist the knife? Who the f*** even says that?
Do I look like John Wayne Bobbitt to you? Then WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO REMOVE MY PENIS???
(This is a joke post, folks. I'm not really upset about this; it was just an excuse to write something that I hoped would be a little funny. All's well.)

furfright charity department message 2010
Posted 15 years ago(From the FurFright group on LiveJournal.)
Hi, everyone! Kiffa here, Assistant Director of FurFright's Charity Department. FurFright 2010 (our first year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell, CT) is drawing ever-closer! Every department of the convention is hard at work to make this year the best FurFright ever, and as far as you know, the Charity Department is no exception! This year we are proud to once again benefit the United States War Dog Association. Every single FurFright attendee can help us reach the insanely unrealistic goal we've set for ourselves-- and here's how:
*If you're coming to FurFright, look around your house or apartment for items to donate to the Charity Raffle & Auction! Got some stuff that you don't want or need anymore, and that you think may be of interest to your fellow furs? Bring it with you to the con and drop it off with Charity Director Riismo or myself in the Charity Room (the earlier, the better). You'll be helping a great cause and reducing clutter at your place of residence at the same time! Best of all, this is something that anyone can do. And this year, for the first time, we will be accepting cursed items-- so have fun with that!
*Artists-- we're making a special appeal to you to donate artwork to the Raffle/Auction. If you happen to miss the October 8th deadline to send Silvermane your submissions for the Book of the Dead, you can still have them added to the Book by bringing your artwork to the Charity Room during the con. Just please remember that your artwork should be appropriate for general audiences (i.e., nothing over a PG-13 rating). Remember, "War Dog" backwards is "go draw", so go draw something for the War Dogs!
*Visit the Charity Room and purchase raffle tickets in great quantities! Cool items (or, as we're fond of referring to it, "boss swag") will be coming in throughout the weekend, so please stop in more than once! We'll be located directly across from the Dealers' Dungeon, so don't be too surprised if when you emerge from the the Dungeon, your arms heavy with bags full of newly-purchased adult artwork and fursuit accessories, you see Riismo or myself giving you the puppy-dog eyes, urging you to throw some of that cash towards a worthy cause.
*Come to the Charity Voice Auction (Sunday; time to be announced) and bid on the featured items! There's nothing quite like the thrill one gets out of outbidding one's furry brethren (and sistren). It's just like winning an epic flame war, only you get to actually see the disgrace and shame in your fallen opponent's eyes! Riismo and I will be your Masters of Ceremony for what can only be described as a steel-cage death match of bidding madness! OK, it's actually not like that at all... but we do our best to make it a fun event.
*Be on the lookout for members of the War Dog Bucket Brigade! Research shows that furries will give large amounts of money to people in fursuits. That's just science. So during the con, we will have specially designated fursuiters going around collecting for our charity. Please give as much as you can, as often as you can, for the members of our Bucket Brigade have been expertly trained to pick the pockets of tightwads. So when you think that that fursuiter you're hugging is trying to get frisky with you, watch out-- you just might be making an unwitting donation to the Charity Department!
Each year, we've raised more money for our charities than we did the year before-- and it's because of you, the FurFright Faithful. Let's keep that tradition going!
Thanks for reading, and we'll see you at FurFright! ^_^
-Kiffa

music lyrics quiz
Posted 15 years agoI thought I'd done this one before, but it seems that I never did. At any rate, I saw this on another journal recently and it made me want to do it. Some are laughably easy, a couple I'll be really impressed if anyone gets.
Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line or two from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Take the songs off the list when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4 (IMPORTANT): For those who are guessing, looking the lyrics up on a search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game post your own.
(In a few places where the entirety or the majority of a song title appears within the first few lines, I've replaced them with blanks.)
July 19: Updated with the unguessed answers (as if anyone cared).

it was bound to happen sooner or later
Posted 15 years agoSo, I signed in under the
dramaarmada account early this morning, and found that some dude had recently left a negative and somewhat rude comment on "Yiff You", our Coldplay parody:
"I love coldplay, and I love being a furry... I certainly do not love the combination of both of them... You guys honestly SUCK at singing... so much f***ing pitch correct !"
Only, here's the thing: there is no pitch-correct on that song, or on any other song that I have ever done, either in Drama Armada or on my own. Hell, I don't even own a recording device that features pitch-correct as an option, so I couldn't use it even if I wanted to. But if this guy thinks that we used pitch-correct, then the pitch must be-- say it with me-- correct, right? So in essence, the guy is accusing us of singing well and poorly at the same time... which just makes tons of sense. He also called our music "fake", which I'm not sure what he meant by. Maybe he thinks that our parody songs are sung over pre-existing karaoke tracks (they're not, we recorded every note of them ourselves), or maybe he just doesn't consider parody a legitimate genre. Perhaps he doesn't realize that Drama Armada is just a side project and that both Sedge and I are original songwriters in our own rights. Or maybe he just woke up on the douchebag side of the bed, I don't know.
The content of the comment itself doesn't really bother me that much. I don't think I'm the best singer in the world, and I don't think I'm the best singer on FA... but I know that I don't 'suck' at it. If I did, I wouldn't have the confidence to share my songs with anyone. I guess what does bother me is that this guy is himself an FA musician, and I've always thought of the FA music community as supportive. We look out for each other. We promote each other. We offer advice, perhaps some constructive criticism, but we do not just trash each other for no good reason. At least not in my experience. And although this is just one person whose opinion isn't even based on accurate information, I can't help but wonder whether this is just an isolated incident, or the beginning of a trend. I also can't help but hope that this guy's attitude keeps him from making much headway in the FA music community, because honestly, his kind is the last thing we need.

the ghosts of my christmas present
Posted 16 years agoI just thought I would take a moment to brag about the fact that my brother gave me what could turn out to be one of the coolest Christmas gifts ever: he's treating me to two nights in a supposedly haunted inn! :D I can't wait. This is a perfect gift for me, because I'm a big ghost buff. I watch most of the 'paranormal' reality shows on TV-- although I want to make it clear that I don't believe for a second that they're all legitimate. I do think that the guys from TAPS on "Ghost Hunters" are reputable, and have captured the most convincing evidence of potential spirit activity that I've ever seen. Most of the other shows I just watch for laughs. "Most Haunted", "Ghost Adventures", "Paranormal State"... they're all pretty ridiculous in one way or another, and I don't find much credibility in any of them. Just so nobody thinks that I believe everything I see on TV. ^_^
The inn is in Rockport, so it's not too far away. We're going to be there on the 15th and 16th of this month, and as of last weekend, my brother and I were the only people booked there for the weekend (not a lot of people vacation in Rockport in January lol). We have a friend who works there, and when we arrive there on Friday, he's going to take us on a tour of the entire place and show us all of the reportedly paranormal "hotspots", including where he had his own recent first experience. And then we're going to investigate the hell out of the place lol. Well, as much as two people with no real paranormal investigation tools or training can, anyway. :) We'll have to make do with a tape recorder and (hopefully) a couple of cameras.
There are at least three different entities that have been reported there, including a man, a woman, and a little girl (who is sometimes seen running through the halls on fire O_O). Some people have seen the figure of a woman-- just a body shape in a dress, with no visible head or limbs-- walk out of one room and into another, through closed doors. The room she walks into? That's the room we're going to be staying in lol. It's supposed to be the most active room in the place. People who have stayed in it have reported having the covers of the bed pulled up over their heads by something in the middle of the night.
I'm very excited, but also kind of nervous. I've always wanted to have some sort of paranormal experience, but I have no idea how I'd actually react if something happened. My friend who works there always said that if he ever saw anything there, he probably wouldn't be able to continue working there. But now he has seen something, and it really didn't seem to freak him out that much. He was walking through the kitchen area past two large walk-in refrigeration units, both of which were open and empty, as they were not being used at the time. As he walked by, he caught sight of someone, who he assumed was the chef, standing inside one of them. He took only one or two more steps, and then decided to stop and say 'hi' to the chef. But of course, on his second look, there was no one there. My friend, a self-professed scaredy-cat, described the experience as "subtle". But that's the thing. If you're going to have a paranormal experience, you don't necessarily get to choose how it happens. You could get the figure out of the corner of your eye, or you could get something walking right through the door without any warning.
Of course, there's also the possibilty that we'll end up having no strange experiences whatsoever. If that's the case, I'm sure it'll still be a cool weekend. I love hanging out with my brother, and whatever does or doesn't happen, we'll have a lot of fun freaking ourselves out. And maybe, just maybe, I'll come away with a couple of good stories, and an EVP or two to put up on FA.
More on this later! :)

1989 - 2009 (what the hell happened?)
Posted 16 years agoToday happens to be my 4th anniversary here on FA. I wanted to do something special for it (I was thinking of recording a new version of one of my old songs), but the last month has been kind of crazy, and it just didn't happen. Last weekend my external hard drive got wiped clean in an incident that I still don't entirely understand, and I lost 200+ GB of music, movies and pics. I'm getting advice from several people about things I can do to try to recover the data, but it's hard to know whose advice to follow when you don't know anything about computers, and everyone tells you something a little different. I'll try something soon, but as of right now, I don't know what. All I know is that part of me is afraid to get my hopes up again.
Aaaanyway, this seems about as good a time as any to write a little something that I wanted to make sure I did by the end of the year.
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about 1989, since this year was its 20-year anniversary. 1989 was one of the banner years in my life. Looking back now, it seems almost impossible that so much was packed into such a short time. I turned 18 in March of that year, graduated from high school in June, and started college in September. I also got my first job that year, at a local supermarket. This opened up my social life beyond my high school, where I wasn't exactly popular. But now, suddenly I had something to do and someone to hang out with almost every night. It was also just about the only period of my life where I felt like I was actually datable lol. I was later told that just about every girl I worked with then had a crush on me. I only dated a couple of them, but between that and a slight upturn in my social status at school, I did more dating that year than ever before, or since.
It was also probably the most creative time in my life, as throughout all of the activity above, I somehow managed to record no less than 9 full-length 'albums' and 2 EPs either by myself, or with my friends and my brother. I'm not saying it was all fantastic, but out of that material I could easily assemble a couple of hours' worth of recordings that I consider 'classics' in their own twisted way, and to which I still very much enjoy listening.
Flash forward 20 years to today. I haven't had a job in a couple of years. I haven't had a relationship in even longer. Yeah, I have friends, but I spend the majority of my time by myself and it's not uncommon for me to go a considerable amount of time without seeing some of them. And on the music front, it's coming up on 2 years since I've recorded anything new.
What the hell happened?
Looking back now, it's hard to believe that that was actually me. Or, maybe, it's hard to believe that this is me now. I had problems with depression back then too, but I didn't let them control my life. I'm not sure exactly when that changed. But even though I know that everybody changes over time, the differences between 1989 me and 2009 me are staggering. I should've grown as a person, but instead I've regressed.
It can't continue. If I don't make some positive changes in 2010, then I might as well give up completely. It's just that there's so much fear in me, and it holds me back. If you asked me what it is that I'm so afraid of, I couldn't even tell you. I'm afraid of failure... but I'm perhaps even more afraid of success, because I've come to think of success as nothing more than a temporary precursor to failure. And falling down hurts a lot more the higher up you do it from.
Somehow I have to fight past that fear. I have no idea how I'm going to do it, but I have to. It's as necessary to my survival as the air that I'm breathing right now.
I wish everyone a better year in 2010 than they had this year.

duran duran vs. bon jovi
Posted 16 years agoIf you'll indulge me in a completely frivolous post for a moment...
I was watching my late night talk shows tonight, and Bon Jovi were on Jimmy Fallon. Tonight it was the entire band, but it's only been about a week, I think, since Jon Bon Jovi was on the show by himself. Add to that the fact that they're the musical guest on SNL this weekend, and it seems like they're everywhere.
Every time Bon Jovi releases a new album and it's invariably a huge success, I have to admit that it pisses me off a little. Somewhere along the line, I came to think of Bon Jovi and Duran Duran as sort of rivals. Of course, they're not. Their music doesn't sound anything alike-- but they are both bands that started out in the '80s, attained great success largely via MTV, and are among the few bands of their era who are still together and recording new material to this day. I think my perception of them as rivals began in June of 2000, when Duran Duran released their album "Pop Trash" in the same week that Bon Jovi released "Crush". "Crush" sold like hotcakes, while "Pop Trash" tanked. And ever since then, I've watched in frustration as Bon Jovi's commercial success has sustained, and Duran Duran's... well, hasn't.
Just to make things clear, I don't hate Bon Jovi. I even have a few of their songs on my hard drive. But I truly believe that Duran Duran are the far superior band, if only for the sheer fact that they sound like a different band on almost every album they put out. Bon Jovi basically sound exactly the same today as they did on "Slippery When Wet". There are no surprises, there are no real chances taken with their music. It's all formula. I don't know, maybe that's exactly why people love them so much. They say that "familiarity breeds contempt", but that's not always true... sometimes familiarity breeds comfort. I'll also admit that it seems like they're genuinely nice guys who really care about their fans. That's cool and all, but how about also challenging them every once in a while?
It could be argued that as a hardcore Duran fan, I'm only writing this out of jealousy and bitterness. OK, I can't necessarily dispute that. But it doesn't mean I don't have a point.
And ever since then, I've watched in frustration as Bon Jovi's commercial success has sustained, and Duran Duran's... well, hasn't.

they put me in the mix, part 2
Posted 16 years agoA few nights ago, I was bored, so I did an FA search on my own name to see if there were any references to me in other people's submissions that I wasn't aware of. I ended up finding this. It's a piece by
vreahli that uses samples from my song "Glidden's Song". vreahli had asked me (probably way back when I first uploaded it) if he could do something with it, but as far as I knew, nothing ever became of it. I figured he either lost interest in the idea or just never got around to it. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised when I found that this had been up on FA for almost two years without my knowledge lol.

Posted 16 years agoI've had an increasing desire lately to collaborate with other FA musicians on stuff. It's something I've wanted to do for a while, but sort of felt like I wasn't really too well-equipped for, because of the more low-tech approach I have to recording than most other people. But I think I've found a way that it could work.
I consider myself more of a songwriter than a musician. I'm never going to be an especially proficient keyboard player (and to quote Stuart Smalley, that's... ok lol). But the flip side of that is, there are plenty of folks here on FA who are great musicians, but maybe sometimes have trouble coming up with lyrics for the music they write.
So, I'm offering my services as lyricist/vocalist to anyone who feels like trying to collaborate. I can't promise that I'll be able to write lyrics to anything that gets sent my way, but I can promise that I'll give it a try if the music feels like the right fit. I have no idea whether this will yield any results or not, but who knows, it could lead to something really cool. :)
Shoot me a reply, note or e-mail if anyone's interested.

The new song's up, plus a laughable picture, and another song will be up soon (EDIT: here it is). Hey, it's been 2 years, you've earned it. :D
In other news, FurFright kicked ass, as usual. If you were there, you already know that. If you weren't, then you seriously need to reconsider where you spend the third weekend in October.
We ended up just under the 1,000 attendee mark this year, and we raised over $7,000 for our charity, the US War Dogs Association, absolutely obliterating our previous record. To everyone who was a part of this overwhelmingly successful effort, thank you. We couldn't have done it without your kindness and generosity.
I wanted to write more than this, but it's 9:30 in the morning and I haven't slept yet lol. So I'll keep it simple and just conclude by saying--

war dogs (furfright charity info)
Posted 16 years agoI know that many of you have already read this on LJ, but I feel that it's important to get this info out there as much as possible.
This year, the recipient of FurFright's fund-raising efforts will be the United States War Dog Association. If you haven't already read
belicbear's incredibly moving post on this worthy cause, go do it. Now. But first, grab a box of Kleenex, because you're probably going to need it.
Now, you may be saying to yourself, "I'm just one fur. What can I do?" Well, here's what you can do:
*If you're coming to FurFright, look around your house or apartment for items to donate to the Charity Raffle & Auction! Got some stuff that you don't want or need anymore, and that you think may be of interest to your fellow furs? Bring it with you to the con and drop it off with Riismo or myself in the Charity Room. You'll be helping a great cause and reducing clutter at your place of residence at the same time! Best of all, this is something that anyone can do. Artists, you can also donate artwork to the Raffle/Auction, and if you happened to miss the deadline to send
silvermane your submissions for the Book of the Dead, you can still have them added to the Book by bringing your artwork to the Charity Room. Please remember that your donated items should be appropriate for general audiences (i.e., nothing over a PG-13 rating). Keep it clean, homes!
*Visit the Charity Room and purchase raffle tickets in great quantities! This year we're moving out of the Delbert Grady Daughters Memorial Wing and will be in Grand Ballroom D (conveniently located near the Dealer's Dungeon), so we'll be much easier to find. That means that there's no excuse for not stopping by! Riismo and/or I will be there, trying to stay sane in spite of the hotel's "all Don Henley, all the time" piped-in music station.
*Come to the Charity Voice Auction (Sunday at 3:30 PM in Grand Ballroom C) and bid on the featured items! There's nothing quite like the thrill one gets out of outbidding one's furry brethren (and sistren). It's just like winning an epic flame war, only you get to actually see the disgrace and shame in your fallen opponent's eyes! Riismo and I will be your Masters of Ceremony for what can only be described as an orgy of auction-y goodness!
*Be on the lookout for members of the War Dog Bucket Brigade! During the con, we will have specially designated fursuiters going around collecting for our charity. Please give as much as you can, as often as you can, for the members of our Bucket Brigade will be authorized to use deadly force on cheapskates. Yes, they may look cute and cuddly, but that's probably what Roy was thinking right before Montecore attacked. (What do you mean, 'Too soon'? Still? Sheesh.)
Over the years, FurFright attendees have proven themselves to be among the most generous furs in the fandom. Let's make sure that this year is no exception! :)
Charity Room Hours:
Friday, 9 AM – 7 PM
Saturday, 10 AM – 6:30 PM
Sunday: The Charity Room will be open from 10 AM to about 3:15 PM. The raffle drawing will be at 10:30 AM. Raffle prize pick-up and final silent bidding will be from 11 AM – about 3:15 PM. We will then head to Grand Ballroom C for the Voice Auction/2nd Chance Raffle Draw, which starts at 3:30 PM. Finally, Voice Auction pick-up will be from about 4:30 – 5:30 PM. Hope you got all that, 'cause I'm not repeating it.
See you at FurFright! ^_^

furfright q&a
Posted 16 years ago
o-kemono recently did a FurFright Q&A-type meme in his FA journal. I thought "What a good idea. I should do that." However, half of the questions didn't really apply to me, as I'm not an artist. So here's my version of it, which I will call...ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS NO-ONE ASKED
What name will you be going by?
Kiffa Kitmouse. You can call me Kiffa, Kiff, Kiffster, Kiff Kiffstofferson lol... but please try to avoid pronouncing my name Keef-a. A lot of people do that and I don't know why. A double consonant is usually preceded by a short vowel sound. Let's put it this way: when you see the word "tiff", you don't pronounce it "teef", do you? :D
Where will you be staying?
At the main hotel.
What day are you getting there, and what time?
Should be there Thursday, early afternoon.
Who will you be rooming with?
Riismo, my compatriot in the FurFright Charity Department.
What is your gender?
Male.
What is your age?
38, but I've been told "you look like you're about 18" lol. As nice a compliment as that was, 'mid-twenties' is probably a bit more accurate.
Do you have a mate?
Nope. I'm single, and for the record, I'm straight. I haven't really been "looking" for a relationship, but if the right opportunity came along (hell, maybe even the 'wrong' one lol), I wouldn't necessarily rule it out. One at a time, ladies! :D
Where and when can I catch up with you?
I will be spending much of the weekend working in the Charity Auction & Raffle Room, just across the hall from the Dealers' Dungeon. Other opportunities to bask in the glow of my presence include:
1) On Saturday at 7 PM,
sedge and I will perform as
dramaarmada in the Masquerade, where we will unveil a brand new DRAMA ARMADA track! I'll be the one singing (terrified of forgetting the words and not hitting the right notes lol). It's gonna be a corker, so be there, or be... elsewhere!2) On Sunday at 3:30 PM, Riismo and I will be emceeing the Charity Voice Auction! Come see two non-professionals try to run an auction! It's comedy gold!
Can I talk to you while you are working?
Yes, you can visit me in the Charity Room. Obviously, if duty calls, I'll need to tend to it, but more often than not, the work in the Charity Room allows for conversation to take place simultaneously.
Can I hug you?
Sure, I'm fairly hug-friendly ^_^ .
Anything else you want to say?
Yes! Even if you only skimmed this journal entry, please take the time to read my next one, which will be all about this year's charity organization-- the United States War Dogs Association-- and how you can help them.
Thanks, and see you at FurFright! ^_^

Posted 16 years agoCross-posted from my LJ.
One day about a week-and-a-half ago, I drove my 80-something-year-old grandmother to an eye doctor appointment in Beverly. She's doing pretty well for her age, and she does still drive around town, but gave up highway driving several years ago.
In the waiting room at the doctor's office, my grandmother started telling me some family history that I'd never heard before. It turns out that my great-great-grandfather, who went by the name Harry T. Leonard, was an actor with a traveling performance group called the Jennie Calef Co. (you can see a really cool picture of Jennie Calef here). Both he and Calef had changed their names for the stage (from Lynch and Murphy, respectively) because of widespread anti-Irish sentiments at the time. When I dropped my grandmother back off at her place, she showed me a theatrical date book that had belonged to my great-great-grandfather. It was a small, time-worn leather-bound book that contained all the dates and cities of his performances from September 1886 through 1888. It was fascinating to see all the notes he'd written in there-- people's addresses (including that of Jennie Calef's sister Lillian, whom he married), lists of people to whom he owed money and the amount owed, and the venues where they played (for instance, a week-long stand at the Grand Opera House in Columbus, Ohio, November 27-31, 1886-- the building would be destroyed by fire the very next year).
When I got home, the first thing I did was to jump online to see if I could dig anything else up about Harry T. Leonard. There wasn't as much as I'd hoped, but I did find this, in from a trade paper dated (as best as I can tell) Sept. 6, 1890: "Harry T. Leonard, for the past seven years comedian of the Jennie Calef Co., has concluded to branch out on his own hook. He has secured from W.H. Langdon the rights to 'Jim Bowie, or the siege of Alamo,' a stage picture of life in the Lone Star State. A competent company is being engaged and new scenery and costumes will be features."
Only just now, I've come across this, from Lancaster, Kentucky's 'Central Record', dated May 10, 1900: "On Tuesday evening, May 15th, at Garrard Opera House an entertainment will be presented which promises to be the biggest affair of the season. It will be under the direction of H.T. Leonard, late of the Chapman-Warren Co., and his wife, Lillian Calef, and interesting child will appear also in the cast, together with local talent selected, each person in consideration of her or his peculiar fitness to the character assigned. Many new specialties will be introduced and a cake walk performed by several children led by Baby Grace will be a feature. As the performance is to be given for the benefit of Garrard Lodge No. 29, Knights of Pythias, the house will be a large one. All would do well to secure their seats in advance at McRoberts' Drug Store. Many persons are expected from neighboring sister lodges and towns and there will be a rush. Rehearsals have been going on for a week past, and Mr. Leonard is highly pleased with the progress, and says the performance will be a 'boomer.'"
God, I love the way people wrote back then lol. Perhaps the coolest thing about this article is that it mentions their "interesting child" Grace, whom my mother is named after :) . The cast list for the show, "A Kentucky Hero" (which is billed as a "rural Comedy Drama in five acts") shows that in addition to the role of 'Shad Kershaw', my great-great-grandfather also played a character named 'Mother Kinchen' lol. How I would love to be able to go back in time and see this show.
And then, finally, in the April 9, 1904 edition of 'The New York Clipper', I found this: "Harry T. Leonard died in Baltimore, Md. on Jan. 10, 1904, of Bright's disease. He was with Haverly's and Sanford's Minstrels in the seventies, and later with many well known dramatic companies, including Walter Sandford's 'May Blossom,' 'Wages Of Sin,' and many others. He was the son of James Lynch, an old time tenor singer, of Christy's Minstrels. He leaves a wife and two children. His wife, Lillian Calef, is one of the Calef Sisters, of Boston. He was forty-eight years of age. His father survives him."
I got a touch sad reading this, but it was also interesting to learn that his father, my great-great-great grandfather, was a member of the Christy's Minstrels. They were one of the most popular groups of the minstrel scene in the mid-19th century, and had an exclusive contract with Stephen Foster to perform his songs. This means that my great-great-great-grandfather almost certainly knew and worked alongside Stephen Foster, which completely blows my mind. Foster, who is often referred to as the 'father of American music', wrote such well-known songs as "Camptown Races", "Swanee River", "Home On The Range", "My Old Kentucky Home", "Beautiful Dreamer", "Oh! Susanna" and "Jeannie With The Light Brown Hair" (the last of which, if my grandmother is to be believed, my great-great-great-grandfather may have been the first person to ever sing onstage). Now, I wouldn't necessarily say that 'proud' would be the right word to describe how I feel about learning that one of my ancestors performed in a blackface minstrel group, but all I can say is that it was a different time. Regardless, I'm completely fascinated by all this new information and I'm sure it will have me doing a good deal of further research.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get to Macomb City for a performance on the 4th. Then it's on to Brookhaven, Hazlehurst, Canton and Yazoo City.*
*These are the actual Mississippi towns in which my great-great-grandfather performed during the week of October 4-8, 1886.

kiffa: unsung
Posted 16 years agoOK, I warned you this might happen. I even gave you all a chance to tell me that it was a bad idea, and no one spoke up. So I've decided to go ahead and post a set of lyrics for one of my unrecorded songs in what may or may not become a series, "Kiffa: Unsung".
I have no idea whether this will work well or not. When read without their intended musical accompaniment, song lyrics can sometimes seem a bit awkward. I mean, when there's music going on alongside them, nobody stops to think how silly or mundane or downright unpoetic some song lyrics can be. Sometimes when you write lyrics, you're not really trying to be especially poetic... so I'm a little bit nervous about submitting lyrics with a "poetry" heading right there at the top. Also, you can't always get your idea across as far as what you intended to do musically, such as "Oh, there's meant to be an instrumental break there" etc. I'll just have to trust that some people will 'get' it. Which almost makes me feel like I did back when I first started posting my songs in the first place.
Oh well. Here goes nothing.

what's new
Posted 16 years agoHey folks. I know I've been on the quiet side for a while, so I thought I'd give you a little update.
First off, there's some new
dramaarmada music on the horizon. Our song for this year's FurFright Masquerade is almost finished, and is sounding pretty great so far (there's a vocal part that I really love and am super-excited about). As I said on our Drama Armada FA page, the new song "follows in our proud tradition of walking the line between good-natured ribbing and potential offensiveness". As far as I'm concerned, that's a good place to be. Even better is that as we're putting the finishing touches on this next recording, another new Armada song is in the writing stages. I really love this new idea, and it's going to be very difficult to decide whether to put it up on FA as quickly as we can, or to save it for the Masquerade at next year's FurFright.
On the 'solo' front I'm still feeling fairly unmotivated. I have a half-written song that I like a lot, but can't seem to find the will to finish. Hopefully, posting the new Drama Armada song when it's finished will remind me how good it feels to get new music out there and will help restore some of my motivation.
Two things I'm considering doing, just to increase the activity on my page a bit...
1) Put together a 'monthly mixtape' consisting of music that I like and want to share with other people. Some of it would be stuff that is well-known, and some of it would be a little more obscure. It would also range anywhere from the '60s to today. This is an idea that I've wanted to try for a while, but I've held back on it because of the potential legal issues involved. Also, this 'mixtape' would obviously not be uploaded here on FA, but somewhere like Rapidshare, and I'd just provide a link to it here (or on my LJ, if doing it here would get me into hot water). What do people think about this idea? Too risky? Not risky enough lol?
2) I thought that maybe I would start posting some of my lyrics for songs that are either unfinished, unrecorded or unpostable. I have at least a few songs that didn't come out quite good enough to post the recordings, but whose lyrics I like enough to possibly post as 'poetry' of sorts. The question is, if I did, would anyone read them?
And that's about it for now. Hope you're all doing well. :)
Even better is that as we're putting the finishing touches on this next recording, another new Armada song is in the writing stages. sedge just posted a meme in his journal that asks you several questions about what you were doing 10 years ago (what you were eating, watching, listening to, etc). I was going to do it, but then I realized that at least half of my answers would be "Same as now". Sadly enough, things haven't changed that much for me in the last 10 years lol. So doing the meme the way I was supposed to do it seemed kind of pointless. However, before I decided not to do it, I started looking through some of my old stuff to get some inspiration. I ended up finding printouts of e-mails and chat sessions from 1998-99. Among them is a questionnaire that circulated through my online friends at the time, and I thought, maybe I should just post that instead. After all, what better way to show what you were doing and thinking in 1999 than to post something that's actually from 1999? So that's what I'm gonna do.This is exactly as it appeared, with the exception of the parts in italics, which are there to either replace information I don't want to reveal, or to explain/comment on particular answers.
1999

OK, since this questionnaire seems to be the latest craze, here goes...
Nimoy (at the time, I primarily went by 'Nimoy' online, more or less as a joke, because my good friend Rob went by the name 'Shatner'.)
*Names: real name withheld, a.k.a. Nimoy, DanSlick and sometimes "Vulcan" or "green-blooded bastard" LOL. ('Dan Slick', jokingly coined by my brother, was the name I used to record my solo material under from 1988-1995.)
*Home: Wakefield, MA.
*Height: 5' 10".
*Eyes: blue.
*Hair color and style: brown, in a ponytail down to around the middle of my back. (It's short now.)
*Favorite relative: don't want to pick favorites.
*What do you remember most about this year? Um, is that 1999 so far or the last 12 months? I'll say my trip to Florida in October.
*Favorite TV shows: X-Files, Simpsons, Party Of Five, ER, Seinfeld, NewsRadio...
*What's on your mouse pad? A Ouija board.
*Do you believe in yourself? Not yet.
*Favorite board game: Balderdash.
*Favorite magazine: Games.
*Favorite drink: Pepsi (a no-brainer).
*Favorite sound: Silence broken by a distant train horn in the night.
*Favorite smell: Clean air.
*Worst feeling in the world: Hopelessness.
*Best feeling in the world: Hope.
*Favorite things to do on the weekends: I WORK weekends
*All week: Work on whatever my latest creative project is (this week, my new website at http://www.angelfire.com/ma/kingsransom (shameless plug). (Don't bother, it's long gone...even the Wayback Machine has no record of it.)
*Favorite soundtrack: Tie: The Saint/Twin Peaks.
*Where do you see yourself in ten years? Wishing I were younger. (Irony. If anything, I *am* younger now LOL.)
*What is the first thing you think of when you wake in the morning? Where's the $@*&!? snooze button...?
*Do you get motion sickness? No, but I hate standing still.
*Roller coasters: deadly or exciting? Ohhh... exciting, thrilling, exhilarating...
*Pen or pencil: Pen, almost always, even when I do crossword puzzles (I live on the edge LOL).
*How many rings before you answer the phone? Varies, in accordance with my proximity to said phone.
*Chocolate or vanilla? Vanilla (unless bubble gum is available).
*Do you like to drive? Yes.
*Do you sleep with stuffed animals? Not anymore. (This was *right* about the time that I was discovering the furry fandom, but I hadn't yet become comfortable enough with my interest in it to collect stuffed animals. Now I have tons. )
*Thunderstorms-- cool or scary? Very cool.
*If you could meet one person dead or alive, who would it be? This is the hardest question on here. I'm not going to answer.
*What is your zodiac sign? Pisces (not that I put stock in astrology).
*What do you wear to bed? Uhhh... the suit I was born in LOL.
*Do you eat the stems of broccoli? No, nor any other part.
*If a girl asked you for the shirt off your back, would you give it to her? Figuratively, yes. Literally... maybe. As long as she promised she wouldn't laugh.
*If you could have any job you wanted, what would it be? Almost anything in entertainment... musician, TV, etc... I'm actually taking a stab at screenwriting.
*If you could dye your hair any color, what would it be. I COULD dye my hair any color. I choose not to.
*If you could have a tattoo, what and where would it be? See previous answer, replace "dye my hair any color" with "have a tattoo".
*What is your favorite brand of gum? For taste, Bubblicious. For nostalgia, Fruit Stripe. (Now I've got so many fake teeth that I can't even *chew* gum anymore. T_T )
*Have you ever been in love? Yes, and lived to tell the tale.
*What is on your walls in your living room? Family pictures.
*Is the glass half empty or half full? Half empty.
*Which do you prefer, Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese Doritos? I hate both. I used to LOVE Toasted Corn flavor, but they stopped making it. (This isn't actually true-- they didn't stop making them, they just stopped selling them in the northeast US-- but I didn't know that at the time.)
*What is your favorite Snapple? I don't drink Snapple.
*Favorite movie: The one I'm writing.
*White or chocolate milk? Chocolate.
*Are you a righty, lefty, or ambidextrous? Lefty.
*Do you type with your fingers on the right keys? No, but I'm the fastest two-finger typer I know.
*When you meet a person of the opposite sex, what do you notice first? Eyes.
*Have you ever saved your chat conversations? I don't have the technology. But there have been some that I definitely would have.
*If you could be one gardening tool, what would you be? I have never, EVER, wanted to be a gardening tool.
*What kind of shoe would you be? A sneaker (not one of those expensive designer ones either).
*If you could do anything to a person you hated most, what would it be? Ignore them (and I'm not saying that to copy anyone). (<-- several of my friends who took this questionnaire had given that same answer.)
*What's under your bed? Posters that I've either taken off my wall or intend to put up.
*What is your favorite number? Anything above zero.
*What is your dream car? I don't care what kind it is as long as it gets me where I want to go and has a tape deck or CD player.
*Who is/was your biggest crush? Um... I won't embarrass her by revealing it so I'll just say Minnie Mouse (that way I only embarrass myself LOL). (This was probably the first time I ever confessed this publicly, and is indicative of my growing interest in the furry fandom at the time.)
*Say something nice about the person who sent this to you: Well I got this from two different people. One is a cool guy who I don't know too too well but I enjoyed the times we've talked. And the other one is my oldest and dearest on-line friend, a true kindred spirit. If I start saying nice things about her, I'll never stop. (The girl I'm talking about here is the one I declined to reveal in the previous "crush" question. Her name was Jen, and she was my first online crush/romance. It ended up going about as well as all the other ones LOL.)
Well, that's more than you probably EVER wanted to know about me LOL. Take care all, I'll talk to you later.

I hope at least one person actually reads this, because it took freaking forever to type lol.
let's put the 'band' in 'bandwagon'
Posted 16 years agoI did an alternate version of this a few months back, but this music meme's been making the rounds lately, so I figured, what the hell.
=Rules=
* Choose a singer/band/group.
* Answer using ONLY titles of songs by that singer/band/group.
* Tag 2 more people (let them know they've been tagged)
The band: Radiohead. I'm taking a couple of liberties by using a few unreleased songs whose titles were too perfect to pass up. I've marked these answers with an asterisk (*). These are all listed on http://www.ateaseweb.com/songs/" rel="nofollow ugc noreferrer noopener">Radiohead's official page, so they're legit. A couple of the other less-recognizable songs are B-sides.
Are you male or female?
Yes I Am
Describe yourself.
Sinking Ship*
What do people feel when they're around you?
Let Down
Describe your current relationship.
Mr. Celibate*
Where would you like to be now?
Where Bluebirds Fly
How do you feel about love?
True Love Waits
What's your life like?
In Limbo
What would you ask for if you only had one wish?
Bullet Proof..I Wish I Was
Say something wise.
Everybody Lies Through Their Teeth*
