As an aside, some people have asked why I've been doing a bunch of YCH auctions rather than "real" commissions. Simple answer! My health issues have interefered with my ability to do a lot of things, including working on art - and the YCH allow me to better pace myself and give offerings I know I can get done in a timely manner. That said, I will be offering a couple of "real" commission slots in the near future too - and check for a journal offering Hallowe'en icons VERY soon!

A few folks have been asking so I felt I should put up a short journal post. Unfortunately I will not be attending Eurofurence this year! I do wish I was, but a combination of events led to it not happening. I don't have any further cons planned, but maybe CFz next year. Hope to catch up with people at a later date anyway!

- My health has been treating me unkindly lately, pain from my condition is bad, migraines are troublesome. Left knee isn't dislocating as often but I am having issues with my hips (which are "very hypermobile" so I guess they are always gonna flare up) and to add derp to that, I fell a few weeks ago and injured my good knee (my right) and that's giving me crap till it heals. Still refused pain relief from doctors here so it's wearing me out.
- I will try to be upbeat at CFz but if I look grumpy, I'm probably really tired and just need a little understanding! Continue bugging me as usual because I do look forward to the company as a break from all this. :)
- I will be taking less work at CFz this year because of the above. Please preorder if you want to avoid disappointment at the con (and I want to avoid disappointing anyone who would like to get art from me <3)

This has been doing the rounds on my friends list and seemed fun. :D I'm not sure how unpopular most of these opinions are, but whatever.

1. A selection of television programs you do not care for.
Most TV, but My Little Pony: FiM, Glee, shit like Jersey Shore, Jerry Springer, Dr Phil and all of their ilk, Dexter (because what I did see was horribly awful compared to the books), pretty much all US sitcoms...ugh I could go on and on.

2. A selection of musical artists you do not care for.
I'll go for unpopular opinions here rather than "Justin Beiber lols" because seriously, who above the age of 14 DOES like that shit? So: pretty much all rap artists, Nickleback, Foo Fighters, Daft Punk, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Taylor Swift. Most screamy-howly-vomit-vocals metal. A BUNCH of classic rock, e.g. Iron Maiden and their modern day pretenders. Owl City especially that fucking GOOD TIME song.

3. A selection of celebrities you couldn't care less about.
Pretty much all of them. There are celebrities I kinda like but I have no interest in what they're doing. They're just people.

4. A hobby you “don’t get”.
Hunting. I think you need to be a pretty shitty person (this is me being VERY polite about it) to gain enjoyment from killing and hurting other living things. I know it's ohsonormal in the US and stuff, but thankfully in the UK it's very much NOT.

5. A habit you find disgusting.
Smoking.

6. Something in school you really liked doing that everyone else bitched over.
French class and history class at high school. Pretty much everyone hated the teachers for those two but I got along really well with them.

I suffer from migraines, as most people who know me well will be all too well aware of. Migraines are a particular type of headache with their own symptoms and difficulties - for example nausea and vomiting, severe light sensitivity - and they can be pretty debilitating or require special consideration. If you didn't know this, it's probably because of what pisses me off - people who call any nasty headache a migraine. No, the severity or nastiness of a headache is NOT what makes it a migraine. There is no shame in having a really bad tension headache. But claiming migraine makes it harder for people to understand the real migraine condition. So if you're one of the people who is prone to colloquially refer to their bad headaches as migraines, STOPIT. :|

Just a quick note to say that I'm moving home tomorrow - still in Holland, from Utrecht to Capelle aan den IJssel. Unfortunately our net won't be hooked up till the 20th, so I won't be around to answer email or notes during that time.

Hi guys!

This post is for my custom nail polish commissioners, past and future, to offer some advice on getting the best out of your polish!

Commissions are always available and cost approx $20 including worldwide shipping. Please contact me to discuss your ideas. :)

NAIL POLISH APPLICATION TIPS:

- Give the bottle a little shake or roll between your palms before use to disperse glitters.

- Always use a base coat and top coat for maximum wear. For top coat I recommend getting a bottle of Seche Vite, which dries your polish super fast and to a brilliant shine, as well as preventing chips. Seche Vite should be used over wet nail polish, so put it on as soon as you've done your nails, don't wait for them to dry out any. Put on a nice thick layer.

- Glitter nail polishes always require multiple coats. Allow coats a couple of minutes to dry a little in between.

- To conserve polish, you can layer the glitter polish over a coat of a plain base colour of your choice. A matching colour will always work well but using contrasting or complementing shades can create fun new looks!

- If you don't like the bumpy feel of glitter on your nails, use multiple layers of top coat, allowing each one to dry before applying the next. Repeat until it feels the way you like it! The product "Gelous" (available from Sally's Beauty in the USA) can be used as a super thick topcoat to smooth everything out - just apply a fast dry topcoat over the top of it.

- You could also apply a matte topcoat to change up your look.

- Removing glitter nail polish can be a pain! But there are tricks to make it easier. Be sure to use an acetone based nail polish remover or pure acetone, not one of the "gentle" removers (which will irritate your skin due to the prolonged exposure it gets, since removal with this type is MUCH slower).

- Advanced removal trick - get some felt, cotton pads or balls and some foil. Cut 10 pieces of the foil, enough to easily wrap your fingertips. Working on one hand at a time, soak small bits of your cotton/felt in acetone, place it on the nail and wrap it on using the foil - repeat for all 5 fingers so that you look like an original series Star Trek alien. Watch TV or YouTube or whatever for 5 minutes. Pressing down on the nail and maybe rubbing side to side a little, slide the foil and cotton off...and voila! All the polish should have come with it. - Advanced glitter trick 2 - get some PVA ("Elmers") glue - the type you used in preschool and one of your classmates undoubtedly ate. Instead of a basecoat, paint all your nails with a thin coat of this - thin it with a little water if required. Wait until the PVA glue has dried clear and apply your glitter polish as normal. Don't submerge your hands in water for a couple of hours. Now when it comes to removing your nail polish, forget the fuss - just peel it right off. The next part is a little harder for me to talk about. It's something I've been avoiding sharing online, but I guess it's worth putting out an explanation to all the people who know me in real life and have met me at conventions in the past couple of years - or who read my previous journals about severe back problems.

Particularly at Eurofurence this year a lot of people saw that I had points where I had difficulty getting around and walking properly, and had been complaining of severe pain. For a while this had been unexplained, but we now know that the culprit behind my difficulties is that I have Hypermobility Syndrome.

It'd been pointed out to me some time ago, but in a crappy haze of misunderstandings on whatever side, I wasn't told about the extent of this disease or how it was affecting my life, or how it may affect my life in years to come. In particular in the past few weeks (since the cold weather set in, whether it's related or not I have no idea) I've really struggled with all of my joints grinding, popping and subluxating more than normal, as well as the back pain. I can't do so many of the normal things I'm used to, like yesterday lifting and washing out a pot from the stove resulted in severe pain and me being unable to lift my arms above my head for over an hour.

The whole thing has caused me a lot of frustration and confusion. Frustration in that in mid 2009 I was a perfectly normal lady in my mid-20s with no issues except some migraines, then by early 2010 I couldn't walk for 10 minutes without being in agony. Confusion in that I have read that some people take years trying to have their HMS diagnosed. Mine was diagnosed within 10 minutes of walking into the physiotherapist's office, with a casual "so I see you have hypermobility" and I didn't even know what it meant at the time - I assumed he just meant my weird foot mobility/foot joints (which are a part of it) so just replied "oh uh is that what it's called". Nothing else explained to me, but then he barely spoke English either. Heh...lately I pleaded with my boyfriend Simon to help me DISprove the notion I had HMS. To go through the symptoms and tell me I didn't meet them. But I do. And you know, I don't even know how that physio diagnosed it after looking at me for 10 minutes, really just STANDING there. :/

I don't think it's sunk in yet that this problem isn't just an injury that will heal up and go away and everything will go back to normal. That this pain is here to stay and if I'm unlucky, it'll get worse. The reason I've not written about it publicly is that I don't know what to say, I don't know how to deal with it and I don't have anyone to really talk to about it. How am I handling it? Just..pretty much drifting through.

It might help explain why you're not seeing a whole lot of art from me lately, but I'm trying to motivate myself to be creative. I am finally ready to give another batch of commissions a go though, hence the Black Friday sale.

I know this is a bit of a downer and all, but do understand I'm not wallowing in self-pity about this. I don't really feel like that will help. Mostly I'm just feeling "well, this is shitty...I don't know what the hell to do about this so I'm going to do other things". And there are many other things to do! Life is very busy with my 28th birthday on Monday, Sinterklaas [Dutch Yuletime celebration] in less than 2 weeks, my driving test, moving into our new house right after, then Christmas...December will be the best time to forget about everything. :)

Well, I actually got back from EF on Sunday night but I was knackered and took some time to recover. ;P

Had a lovely con despite my pain issues, and it was great to see folks again (or meet you for the first time!). I got to meet some folks I've known online for quite a while and it was great to finally put faces to the names and to chat with you guys. I know at times I was very busy but I tried to balance it up with some social time too when possible. - Yep, I will have one panel.

- Probably not. I'm not an eventsy person.

How can I find you at the con?
- Dealer's Den. I'm shackled to a table in there most of the time. If you want to find me outwith those times, come into the Dealer's Den and ask about meeting up or whatever.

Can we go out for a dinner?
- Maybe - just ask!

Are you buying art?
- Depends if I see something I really like. My budget is going to be very tight though.

What do I have to watch out for, when I am meeting you?
- I can be quiet and shy. I do have anxiety issues and there's a chance you'll meet me at a low point and I'll seem very weird, darty eyed, twitchy, short of breath, wringing hands, even on the verge of tears. IF that should happen (let's hope it doesn't this year!) please don't take it as representative of me "as a whole". If you met me last year and found me like this, that's not what I'm like all the time. Hopefully you'll find me this year in a more relaxed and talkative state! Regardless don't treat me like I'm seriously sick or whatever if I am having a difficult time. I'll be fine, and the best thing is just to try and be friendly and normal with me.

What is the best way to contact you?
- Come up and talk to me. If you want, you can email me before the con to establish some communication before meeting up. During the con, if we get along well, I will give you my mobile phone number for meeting up or whatever.

May I kidnap you to my room?
- If we're having fun and getting along well, yeah sure.

You look pretty tired, are you ok?
- I always look kinda tired, some people say. Just expect that I will and that I'm fine. :P

Last time/last con/last meet/last chat we talked so much and now you forgot my name? Why???
- I suck at names, especially if I'm in the dealer's den behind a table.

Can I look in your sketchbook?
- Sure.

Can I draw in your sketchbook?
- Sure.

Will you tell me your room-number and can I surprise visit you?
- Not a good idea. :P If I'm in my room it's to freshen up or take a break from the busy and de-stress/recover. That means quiet relaxing time. So good friends only. :P We might invite you up to the room though!

Obviously I can't guarantee I'll take up on your idea, but I very much appreciate it all the same! Whether it's an animal species, a theme, a pose, a certain type of media - I'm happy to hear it. :D

I've had a fair few enquiries as to whether I'll be attending FWA this year (being I've been there 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011...) but unfortunately the answer is no. I couldn't plan a US trip for this time of this year. I am considering attending an autumn US convention though!

Where I will be is FWH - Furry Weekend Holland! That takes place at the end of this month. I really hope to get to know some of the Dutch furs better and overcome my shyness with people. I really could use some local friends and some of the people I know online seem awesome - I've just not managed (or been too nervous to ask about) meeting up irl yet. So FWH will be the perfect opportunity I reckon. :) If you're going there I hope to meet you!
