Marklin/Puffa/the Goods engine
Posted 8 years agoThis is a journal about my theorists on the Marklin engine from Thomas & Friends and Puffa and the goods engine from TUGS
During season 1 of Thomas and Friends an off-shelf Marklin DRG class 80 was used to haul background stock, it was never really meant to appear onscreen, but did in Thomas’ Train, Trouble in the Shed (as a tarped workshop engine) and The Flying Kipper (it is believed to have also appeared in Off the Rails, but closer inspection of said scene reveals this was actually Henry). The Marklin engine was also seen in a behind the scenes photo from Tenders and Turntables.
During season 2 the Marklin engine was presumably still used for the same job but unlike season 1; it stayed off camera.
Shortly after season 2, production of the series TUGS began and two more Marklin DRG 80s were utilized, however both were modified to look American to fit the setting (but not the 1920s time period). The first received a cowcatcher, large lamp and diamond smokestack, this class 80 became series regular Puffa. The second class 80 was more heavily altered and ultimately resembled a hybrid of a USATC S100 and EJ Lavino and Company 34 but with a half-cab, this engine was dubbed simply “the goods engine”.
Unfortunately TUGS was cancelled after one season and many of its assets moved to the T&F studios for use in the third season onwards. It was during season 3 that the fate of the Marklin engine was revealed when its scrapped front end appeared in Edward, Trevor and the Useful Party. A popular rumour is that the Marklin engine became Puffa, however the afore mentioned scrap 80 retains its original number and valve in front of the funnel, both of which Puffa lacked, additionally the Marklin engine’s chassis was used in season 5 to propel runaway trucks and when seen it clearly retained its red wheel colour as opposed to Puffa’s black.
Another rumour surrounds City of Truro, for whom a model was constructed for the season 3 episode Gordon and the Famous Visitor. The COT model had the smokebox door of class 80, which lead to the rumour that the door once belonged to the Marklin engine, however the scrapped Marklin engine still had its smokebox door attached and ETATUP came long after GATFV, even if produced in reverse order, the COT model would’ve needed to be completed in plenty of time before filming. This therefor e suggests that COT’s smokebox door is actually from the goods engine.
During season 4 more scrap pieces (sides of a cab) of a class 80 began to appear, with the general consensus being that these belonged to the Marklin engine, this however is not the case. These cab sides appeared in Rusty to the Rescue and Toad Stands By, closer inspection of the windows reveals them to be two sides to the same cab. The piece shown in Toad Stands By has a piece of roof frame still attached, the way it is cut off suggests it is from a half cab, very much like the goods engine, placing an image of these scrap cab sides next to an image of the Goods engine confirmed they are one and the same.
During season 5 even more class 80 scrap appeared, notably in Toby’s Discovery and Stepney Gets Lost (as well as Calling All Engines), this time a cab roof and another cab side, the roof is clearly black confirming it as the Marklin engine, and the cab piece is clearly from a pure class 80 (not modified like the goods engine), so again this is good ol’ Marklin.
This leaves the fate of Puffa unknown, it’s highly possible given all this above that Puffa was saved for preservation like most of the other TUGS models, and it’s just a matter of finding him.

To say 2017 was a rollercoaster is an understatement.

In April, i rode behind the Flying Scotsman and even got on the footplate.
Also around that time i had a rough move from my home of over 10 years
In the following months i began reaching out to local furs, the first of which were
