Toyhouse rant
Posted 6 months agoAnyone who's happened upon my profile knows I love adopts and commissions. I find immense joy in shopping and use it to cope with my depression with my current RL. But oh my god, Toyhouse is such a pain in the ass compared to Furaffinity. I think it's just because -- for some reason -- Toyhouse's userbase is mostly minors compared to Furaffinity being mostly 18+, but it's still so awful using the dedicated OC/adopt website only to be met with DNIs and TOS' that don't make sense to the point I'm sadder logging off than I was when I came online.
DNIs are either always very vague or overly specific. For example: a user may have "etc" or "basic DNI" as their DNI. "etc" is the most frustrating but "basic DNI" is also a bit useless. What is a basic DNI? I know there's a Carrd or whatever explaining it but that doesn't do it, everyones idea of what the basis of who you should not/do not want to talk to online is different. I should not have to guess what your boundaries are because you're lazy, especially as Toyhouse users can be so touchy about them (more about that in a moment).
And then there's people who's DNIs are overly specific and bazaar. I am at least grateful that they say outright what their boundaries are, even nitpick-y stuff. But I've seen such strange stuff, like for example "no fake genders". ???, what on earth is and is not a fake gender? Then there's the strange aversion to anything even slightly sensitive despite them having warnings for every horrible thing that could ever happen to a person (totallyyyy not glorified either!) but can't handle people like age regressors (who are a community who regress usually involuntarily due to childhood trauma, it is not roleplay like ABDL or Ageplay)..
And finally TOS, my worst nightmare.
If I'm not scared off by strange or lazy DNIs I'll often exit a tab due to the absolutely deranged TOS. Now while DNIs are reasonable personal boundaries I have a huge issue with TOS culture on the site. As mentioned, Toyhouse is unfortunately mostly minors, so that means 99% of users have no real idea of business ethics. This resulted in there being a culture of Ubisofting and adopt sellers having too much control and basically continuing to own the OC even after it has been sold. I've seen TOS' where you could not change the design AT ALL or the adopt would be taken back, that making adopt's profiles private would get you blacklisted and the adopt taken back, that changing sites/moving adopts off site would get the adopt taken back, that drawing NSFW of a adopt would result in a blacklist, that you have to give adopts back if you don't want them anymore.. there's also by extension a lot of "background checking" on freebies. Like, they'll go through your account or you have to write a massive paragraph about what you'll do with the adopt so they'll even consider you. This and some common weirdo TOS is often to prevent adopt hoarding or "buying adopts and then leaving them to rot in a folder". I hate this as I am a very private person who only uses Toyhouse for buying and selling, I keep my adopts and OCs themselves safe in a private Discord server for only me because it's more secure and less limiting. But all these kids see is "oh, he's adopt hoarding". Which, BTW, why is it I have to be vetted to buy freebies at all? You literally cared about the OC so little you're giving them away for NOTHING, and what is the worst possible thing that could come from selling an adopt? Half of the time it isn't even the designer's artwork, rather a base. So it's not like it's an AI issue. I genuinely have no idea what the perils of selling to an empty account are.
So yea, basically I wish Toyhouse was more mature and it's users were old enough to understand the basic concept of purchase and property because it would make Toyhouse an actually usable fucking site. Pain </3.
