Posted 8 years agoOh, so, I started a job as a Technical Lab Assistant (Apprentice) at a medical lab last Tuesday. 2nd shift, so not my favorite as far as hours go, but I get to call my paycheck "blood money" and technically be correct.
As much as I actually hate blood, it's surprisingly easy for me to deal with it when it's in sample tubes. The majority of the job is to check incoming samples for clots and etc, and then load it onto an automated line to go to different machines and do different tests. It can be tedious at times, but it's a job where I can feel like I'm still doing something important, even if it's not always exciting, which is something I lacked at my last couple of jobs.
The cool thing is that, even though the lab is mostly automated, there's still a lot of stuff that needs to be done manually, so there's always going to be new things to do and learn (esp for someone like me, who has 0 lab experience outside of AP chemistry in high school).
It's the same place Frag works at, so I can go bother him if I don't understand something.

BLFC Meme!
Posted 8 years agoArrival and Departure:
Arriving at some point during Thursday (likely around noon), leaving Monday evening
Staying At:
Grand Sierra Resort
How are you traveling?
We're driving there and flying back
Who are you rooming with?
LIKE 8 PEOPLE
Sophie Manx, her brother, Metric Fox (maybe, lol), Zippiner, Skitzycat, and Felvet. OH AND FRAG
Where will you be? How best to find you?
My dude, I won't know where I'll be until I'm there.
I'll have a blue backpack and a gray SAS baseball cap, and/or a black sweatshirt of some kind.
Who will you be with?
Likely around other New Mexico furs, probably with Frag most of the time
Which suit(s) will you be bringing?
N/A
Do you do free art?
Sure, but I make no guarantees about quality
What is your gender?
NB
How old are you?
Plenty old enough to drink and gamble
How tall are you?
~5'5"
Can I talk to you?
Sure, but I can take a bit to warm up to someone I don't know, so I might not be too talkative
Can I hug and/or snuggle you?
Hugs, yes; snuggles, no
Are you nice?
I try to be, unless you're an irredeemable asshole
Are you cliquey?
Unintentionally? I tend to be shy/quiet around people I don't know well, sorry
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
You'll just about have to come up and tap me on the shoulder. I tend to tune out noise and may not hear someone calling me
Are you fursuiting?
Nope
Can I ask you to dance with me during the dances?
No, that's okay
Can I buy you drinks?
Sure!
Do you attend parties?
I kinda don't, now that I think about it, unless it's in our room
Can I take your picture?
Rather you didn't, if it's all the same to you
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
Zip, Sophie, and I have a lot of "sitting around and cackling" to do

Posted 8 years agoWelp, I guess BLFC is the only out-of-state con we're going to this year. Super looking forward to it, since I've never been to Reno before. I'm guessing it's going to be a somewhat toned down version of Las Vegas.
May is going to go by fast, especially since Frag and I are going through the process of buying a house! Closing date is scheduled to be right before we leave for BLFC, so it might get a little chaotic next month. I've started packing some of the least essential things, so the moving box takeover has already begun.
I'm mildly concerned my dog will decide it's too stressful and have a heart attack (he's old, this isn't just a random concern out of the blue).
Current major knitting project involves making a pattern 100% from scratch. It's been taking a while.

RMFC 2017
Posted 8 years agoRoom block opened today, and we managed to snag one of the rooms with a balcony. I don't know if it's worth it, but having a balcony in a con room just sounds cool. Plus it might be bigger (the pics make it look a little bigger, anyway).
Oh, and if you haven't heard, the RMFC directors decided to ban the FR armbands. I'm definitely not complaining about that.

Posted 9 years agoOne day, I'll actually post the knit stuff I've been making. Because going through my gallery, I just realized that I have, like, nothing really posted here. I tend to be better about updating Ravelry and Trello, and I'm still terrible about those.
I blame it on being scatterbrained.

Posted 9 years agoTfw you point someone to your Telegram chat and the first thing they do upon entering is to announce that they're 12. Then they post a picture of themself while talking about other personal information, and as you're double checking internet privacy laws about what age children are supposed to be to typically make an account and what the laws are regarding what information you legally aren't supposed to get from children under 13, they post ANOTHER selfie, start trying to arrange meeting up with people in your chat, and post very adult jokes in the chat (which also has other minors in it).
I'm thinking we're going to kick him and wash our hands of the entire matter. And institute an age minimum of 13. I didn't think this would be an issue that would come up. Like, sorry about your sob story, kiddo, but you aren't worth the trouble (you know, like potential fines of $40k. and probably ending up on some federal watchlist).

Little update
Posted 9 years agoThings I'm currently up to:
- Making a knitting pattern 100% from scratch. It's essentially a face mask and it is one of the worst things I have ever convinced myself to do, but I'm stubborn and I'm gonna stick to it.
- Also participating in a lace shawl knit along. It uses a paid pattern that I don't have to buy if I finish before the deadline (which is the end of January; I'm not worried about finishing on time).
- Also, the NM Furs state page has been handed down to
inusnowpaw and me. Hello, to those of you checking out my page because of that! Inu already owns and runs the Telegram chat for NM furries, and I've been an admin for a while now, in addition to helping run the NM Twitter and Tumblr. I'm seeing a number of new names and faces in New Mexico, and it's refreshing to see people stepping up with new ideas for meets.
The furry community in NM has been stagnating over the last decade or so, and there's no reason that should be happening. By my count, there are well over 100 furs here; it's a large group that seems to be consistently growing. I would like to get to the point of hosting large meets and/or parties in relatively public spaces - perhaps renting a hall or a park or *something*. I'd like to see a more inclusive approach to large meets, especially compared to how some people are currently handling it (or rather, failing to). Long term goal? Who knows, maybe figuring out a bigger furry presence at local conventions. The point is, there's more than enough people here that we can call ourselves a community, and the *entire* community deserves to have a fun and safe way to socialize. And I intend to do everything I can to make that happen.

Am I the only one
Posted 9 years agowho mentally pronounces 'SJW' as 'S-Jew'? I don't know why I keep reading it that way. Probably the same reason I keep thinking that bird dating sim is called 'Hateful Boyfriend'.
Also, yes, hello, I am not dead. I've been power lurking and not being interactive on here. Mostly I've been active on Telegram and Tumblr, because I have an allergy to doing productive and/or worthwhile things.
Started playing Bioshock Remastered - apparently if you already owned the originals, you got the remastered versions for free on Steam. So that's pretty fuckin' neato. I love the setting and also Big Daddy noises. Apparently if you want to make me happy, just make low, groaning whale noises at me.

Finally back from RMFC
Posted 9 years agoWe were supposed to be back home ~48 hours ago, but our car decided that functioning properly is overrated. I don't know exactly what it is that happened (I think there's something with a piston no longer working and the rest of the engine just kinda shat all over itself and borked everything), but the end result is that we had to get towed to a tiny little town 20 miles north of the state border, only to spend two nights figuring out that we need to get the car towed the rest of the way to Albuquerque.
Our reasoning is that Little Tiny Town Mechanic was quoting us $7k for a repair, and on top of that, they're like 250 miles out of the way for us, so coming back for the car would be an awful pain in the ass. The mechanic in ABQ quoted $5k, so, AWESOME. THANKS CAR. At least it happened on our way back home instead of on our way to the con, because that would've been much worse.
We had an amazing time at RMFC, too. There was a decent number of us New Mexico furs who went. Spending time getting to know people better when I only really kinda know them from the Telegram group, that was something I enjoyed. Spent time harassing
dragoncrescent and
eaglethecheetah which was like... I don't even know how to put into words the feelings I have for getting to spend time with them. They're the extended family I never had, and that probably plays a lot into why going to RMFC, a convention I went to for the first time in a city I've never been to before, it felt more like going home than being on vacation. It felt like going to a family reunion where you actually like the members of your family. The best times I had there was having people just coming over to our room to watch the Olympics and play Cards Against Humanity. It was very laid-back and I'm okay with that.
I'm not gonna lie, there were numerous hiccups here and there at the convention, but the vast majority of them seem to be more from the fustercluck of being in a different hotel for the first time (and the hotel, I kinda get the feeling that they didn't know how to deal with a decently sized convention, even though it's part of a damn convention center). The issues that came up are kinda non-issues in the sense that RMFC's going back to their original hotel next year, so it's kinda moot to get that upset over them. We already pre-reg'd for next year, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the con will be like back in it's natural habitat (and if we end up not being able to make it, oops, I guess it's a donation or something).
So, summary, RMFC was fantastic, the trip home was decidedly much less so. OH, and I got an absolutely lovely badge from
wolf-nymph of the Jiggly Raptor. My terrible, trash-eating idiot baby doesn't deserve to look that good, but I fucking love it anyway. 300% worth it.

Posted 9 years agoYeah, Frag and I are going. We're driving up, which I'm looking forward to since I like long car rides and it'll be neat to see northern New Mexico. Also looking forward to seeing Denver, since I've never been there before (flight layovers don't count).
Still don't 100% know if I'm getting a fall outage job, SUPPOSEDLY I'll know for sure tomorrow. The recruiter I keep talking to makes it sound like I will be getting it and starting on the paperwork/security check tomorrow, unless the power plant company, at the last minute, really cuts down on the number of positions they'll have open. The plant I'm going for is in North Carolina, so being from out of state and having no experience, means that I'm not exactly high on their priority list when it comes to hiring. It's a serious test of patience and stubbornness, I stg. I really think outage work is what I want, though, since it's a lot of travelling (which I like), it's only for 4-6 weeks per outage (so there's a light at the end of the tunnel), and, idk, it sounds like it'll be more interesting after working enough to get more than an entry level position. Plus, when people ask me what I do, I can go, "oh, I work in the nuclear power industry" and that just plain sounds fancy.
But yeah, that's pretty much all I've been up to lately. Hope things are going alright for y'all.

Obligatory "alternate site list" Journal
Posted 9 years agoI mean, I don't exactly have a lot of confidence in FA's site/code security (it wouldn't surprise me if it's being held together with duct tape and wishful thinking). I don't plan on permanently leaving, but, uh, here are other places I also sporadically post things:

Posted 9 years agoSabaku Con is on Friday and I'm apparently refusing to believe that Friday is not tomorrow and that, yes, I do have one more day.
I have a whole bunch of different stuff, hopefully *something* is going to sell.
I keep getting ideas for new projects. I wish I had the energy to just make everything. Sort of related, I'm getting checked out for sleep apnea. Apparently constant sleep deprivation has similar symptoms to ADD, so.

Upcoming cons!
Posted 9 years agoSabakucon is right around the corner, being the first weekend of May. It's a local anime convention here in Albuquerque, but this year there's a good handful of furry panels. It's the closest we have so far to a furry con in New Mexico, tbh.
zippiner was going to host the panel on getting to know the local group, but she's not going to be able to make it back for that, so I'm going to take her place. I'm nervous (and excited) about it, but I feel like I'm involved with the local group and events well enough to do a good job, answer questions, etc.
gingerkatkreations is sharing a table with
spotsandpatches, and she's also going to let me put up all my knit stuff to sell. Hopefully I'll do well! I should crank out some more Pokéball and pride wristwarmers to fill out table space.
The other convention Frag and I are planning on is RMFC. I know about the whole neo-nazi debacle and I'm hoping they'll behave enough to not ruin the con. I can understand why people don't want to go if they're there, but honestly half the reason I want to go is for the drive north and to see some of Denver (long driving trips are fun for me, I've done the drive from New Mexico to North Carolina at least ten times). Idk, I hope RMFC has enough of a spine to, at the very least, keep the neo-nazis from wearing their armbands in con spaces (don't tell me that it's not a swastika so it's not nazi symbology, you are perfectly fucking aware of the similarities and the association we, as a culture, have with the defining parts of that particular design - if someone replaced the stars of the US flag with paw prints, it's still fucking clear it's a representation of the US flag).

Posted 9 years agoNot too many big life updates lately, for me anyway. Skitzy and Zip are leaving us 5ever for California, so once that sinks in (in probably a week or three) I'm probably going to be a sad panda for a while.
There's a slim chance we might be going to MFF this year, which I'm excited about just for the idea of visiting Chicago (and/or possibly Milwaukee). We might just hold out for FC, though.
I've been trying to get a job at a nuclear outage, which would give our budget some more breathing room and that's always nice. An outage job is basically going through hell for six weeks, but getting paid more in that time than I did in a year part time at the dog day care. Also, it sounds a lot more fancy than "I clean dog shit for a living".
People would be like, "whoa, that sounds like the sort of job for smart people to get" and I'd be like "yes, I am totally a smart science raptor" (but the work is really more like, 'can you walk around and watch things to make sure they're not on fire' and not 'how much do you know about nuclear physics, let's invent new radioactive isotopes') but it still sounds cool, tho
Uhhh, nothing else really going on, just been working on some socks and shawls while listening to horrifically violent murder mysteries and crime audiobooks. Pretty par for the course for me.

Posted 9 years agoAfter a not very nice fall/winter sort of period, I feel like I'm coming back to life a little bit.
I have been working on various knitting projects, but they're not furry or animal related, and I'm pretty sure people don't come here to look at lace shawls. One of my current projects has a bird on it, so that'll get posted (probably when it gets finished in June - I wanted nice gloves before the end of winter, so naturally they'll be finished in the summer).
Fun fact btw, if you ever get into knitting/crochet, make a damn gauge swatch. Then you won't have to start over three times because the size is wrong and you can't get your glove over your thumb.

So this new raptor was found in China, and the name they gave it translates into "Fluffy Feathered Poodle From Hell". I don't have words for this, other than "yes, that is the raptor type that is Jigglemeats." I love poodles and I have spent too many recesses stomping around and chasing classmates as a JP velociraptor and this, how is this not perfect? I'm gonna be a Hell poodle raptor now.

Back from Anthrocon
Posted 10 years ago(We actually got back really late Monday night, and I ended up sleeping excessively yesterday, so this is a day late, I guess)
I had a good time at the convention, though it seemed to go by crazy fast. It probably had something to do with having a relatively short stay of five days instead of seven or so. It didn't help that I was working on finishing a project Thursday and Friday to get it in the Art Show at the last minute, and I was having anxiety for most of Friday about putting myself out there for Art Show space. I feel invisible 99% of the time, and it was more nerve-wracking than I expected, doing something that puts me relatively out in the open like that. It doesn't help that nothing of mine sold, only Skitzycat's embroidered scarf.
Like, I wouldn't even be as upset about it if the guy checking bags hadn't told me that he was closing out auctions and it looked like everything of mine had a bid. And then to get to my things and see that every single bid sheet is empty, right after getting my hopes up... Yeah, I guess "upset" might be a word for that.
On the bright side, I got to spend time with cool people and Frag and I got to see some more of Pittsburgh. I always like trying new restaurants and seeing new things, and we got to fit some of that in during this trip.
Now that I'm back home, I'm going to try to figure out some new patterns to knit. I'm thinking of trying out some sort of shark glove/glitten, something loosely along the lines of this http://www.incrediblethings.com/sty.....mfy-its-scary/ The idea I have is to have it shaped kind of a sock puppet or something. If I can knit those Deathflake mittens, I can manage a simpler shark pattern. I'm thinking I'm not going to go for the FC Art Show, since it costs money to get space there and I am not very confident about anything selling. I might try AC again next year, depending on how I'm doing in the next eight or so months.

Hey, check out my AC Art Show table!
Posted 10 years agoMy table space is the one near the back of the general gallery with the knit gloves and ear hat! I also have one of Skitzycat's embroidered scarves on display as well! Go bid on things so I don't have to take them home!
AC 2015
Posted 10 years agoWhere are you staying?
The Omni
What day are you getting there?
We're getting in the middle of Wednesday night
How are you traveling?
Flying!
Who will you be rooming with?
Zippiner and Skitzycat, and Nate and Nargle. Well, and my husband too, Fragman.
How is the best way to find you?
Rainbow shoes! I may or may not wear my bright red squid hat.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Possibly!
What do you look like?
Uh, generic chubby white person with glasses and cane, I guess?
Will you be suiting?
Nope
Do you do free art?
Probably not
Do you do trades?
Sure!
Do you do badges?
Not at the convention, sorry!
If you have an Artist's Table, what will you be selling?
N/A
What is your gender?
Somewhere between "female" and "other"
How tall are you?
Average, I think
Can I talk to you?
Yeah, sure, but I can't promise I'll be an engaging conversation partner. Anxiety keeps me from being talkative around people I don't know.
Can I touch you?
I'd rather you not.
How can I find you?
I'll likely be spending a fair amount of time in the Zoo.
Can I visit your room?
No, probably not.
Can I buy you drinks?
Possibly, as long as you buy my husband one as well!
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Hugs are okay as long as you ask, snuggles, probably no.
Are you nice?
I try to be, but I think I come off as a frigid bitch, ha ha.
Will you be going to parties?
Not sure!
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
I'm going to be perfectly honest, you might have to come up to me and say hello. I just don't process people calling my name or waving at me when I'm in a crowd.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
That's going to be on a case-by-case status. Probably not.
Can I look in your sketchbook?
Yeah, alright.
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
Yes! I like other people drawing in my sketchbook!
Can I take your picture?
I strongly prefer if you didn't.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
Getting better about meeting new people and getting anxiety issues under control!

Posted 10 years agoI know I've been quiet on here, but I'm going to work on changing that.
The biggest thing going on lately is that I've created my own paw print designs and made a handful of fingerless gloves to sell at a local anime con, Sabakucon. Any leftovers I have, I'm either going to put up for sale at Anthrocon's art show, or up in my new Etsy shop - https://www.etsy.com/shop/KtbyrdKnits
Currently, the only thing I have on there are custom color fingerless gloves, made to order. I'm going to start slow on this so that I don't overwhelm myself. In the meantime, I'm planning on making more gloves to sell as "pre-mades", either on Etsy or at conventions. I'm open to take custom colored gloves outside of Etsy as well, which are subject to my TOS as outlined here. The main difference between here and Etsy, is that outside of Etsy, I will take a down payment first, and the rest of the payment after it's done, vs full payment up front on Etsy.
I also made a Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/ktbyrd.knits
I will be doing more frequent updates on there.
