New Badger Group Available
Posted 12 years agoChanges in management
Posted 12 years agoAs this group hasn't seen any regular updates since summer 2011, this won't come as a surprise. I'm not sure what to do with the group anymore, I don't care enough to think about it, and even if I did, I don't have the time or energy to maintain it anyway. I'd actually been trying to give up the group since March but was unable to reach the founder.
Effective immediately, I'm stepping down as administrator, and the current moderator,
illogical, will be taking my place. Direct your questions to him.
It was a lot of fun to help build this group, and to take it from a few dozen members up to almost 400, which is bigger than even the largest otter group! You can still find me maintaining
stoats-n-weasels for now, where I can embarrass myself in front of a much smaller crowd.

Weasyl thread!
Posted 13 years agoSince all the cool kids are making Weasyl journals, and the site was practically named after us... why not?
Usergroups are still in beta (more beta-y than the rest of the site, even), but if you're there, you might want to join one or more of these groups:
12/20/12 edit: Weasyl groups appear to be disabled now.
https://www.weasyl.com/groupprofile/mustelids
https://www.weasyl.com/groupprofile/otters
https://www.weasyl.com/groupprofile.....ndothermusteli
In the comments section here... feel free to link us to your Weasyl account, let others know if you have invites to give out, or if you need an invite, or just talk about whatever. This is mostly so we can find each other. What do you love/hate about Weasyl so far?

Other mustelid groups; FA categories; changes ahead!
Posted 14 years agoWe felt like there was a weasel-shaped hole (the jokes write themselves, don't they?) in the land of FA groups, so we've created Stoats-N-Weasels for your cavorting and profile-adding pleasure!
Here's a complete list, as far as we know, of all the mustelid species groups:
Badgers:
badgers
Ferrets:
ferretfurs
Martens:
mad23
Minks:
minksarebetterthanyou
Otters:
otters and
Lutrinae-OTTAH
Stoats and Weasels:
stoats-n-weasels
Everybody:
mustelids and
familymustelidae
As promised, FurAffinity has added to its selection of species categories. When you submit art, make sure it goes in the right place! The options now include:
• Ferret
• Mustelid - Badger
• Mustelid - Ferret
• Mustelid - Otter
• Mustelid - Mink
• Mustelid - Weasel
• Mustelid - Wolverine
• Mustelid (Other)
I'm not sure why there are two ferret categories. I've tried to inform the staff but haven't heard anything back. Good luck with that, I guess!
Meanwhile, back in the land of mustelids... this group hasn't had regular submissions or journals in a long time. That's going to change in the next few weeks, as the Link(s) of the Weeks will return. We're also looking for more art to add... perhaps a contest of some sort is the answer?
None of these plans are too solid yet, so if you'd like to see a certain type of content, say something in the comments! Keep in mind that we'd like to avoid stepping on familymustelidae's toes... mustelid sightings on TV, mustelid zoo listings, and species data sheets have already been done (quite well) over there.

FurAffinity is taking requests for new species categories!
Posted 14 years agoIf any of you have a Twitter account, furaffinity has posted the following:
We're making changes to the species list. What should we add? We're already dropping in Bovines, Citra, Sergals and several others.
Currently the only mustelid species available are badger, ferret, mink, and otter.
Please reply and retweet, and let FA know that weasels, martens, wolverines, stoats, and the rest of us count too!
Update update update!
FA has released a proposed species list and it includes the following:
• Mustelid - Weasel
• Mustelid - Ferret
• Mustelid - Badger
• Mustelid - Other
• Mustelid - Otter
• Mustelid - Mink
• Mustelid - Skunk
For those of you who have left feedback, thanks! The changes should be made later this week.

Mustelid con panel?
Posted 14 years agoHypothetically, if there were to a be a mustelid meet-and-greet type affair at Midwest Furfest this November, who'd be interested in attending it?
Link of the Week: Badger Edition
Posted 14 years agoTo all those with badger fursonas: there is finally a group for you!
badgers desperately needs your love.
And to everyone, badger or not, the most popular nature video of 2011 with its own t-shirt is still worth watching:

Link(s) of the Week: Pet Ownership Edition
Posted 14 years agoFirst off,
kuntos found a news article about the ongoing battle to legalize pet ferrets in California. Thank you! And note the misspelling of "weasel" in the URL.
Next, it's Pet Otters – Ferrets on Crack! I always thought that ferrets were like cats on crack, so we're talking exponential crack here.
If you have a link or video to share, let us know!

Link of the Week: Mongoose Madness
Posted 14 years agoNo, mongooses (mongeese?) aren't mustelids...that's the point. SpicyWeasel on LiveJournal explores why people confuse herpestids (mongoose, meerkat, etc.) with mustelids, and the anatomical differences between them. Lots of entertaining drawings to go along. Lots of martens, too!
Thanks to
treeweasel for passing this along a couple weeks ago. If you have a link to share, let us know!
