Moosey Stuff
Posted 8 months agoHey y'all! I've been silent for a while, so I figured new year's day was a good time to poke my head up with a few bits of news.
A few people have contacted me about my personal site being down.. Because I had to be clever and get "nanimoo.se", which is technically a Swedish domain, it's subject to the laws of Sweden.. which now stipulate that for all .se domains, the WHOIS info must now be accurate and valid for the domain to be valid. That means putting my real name, phone number, address, etc, into easily-accessible public record, essentially doxxing myself. No. (There is a stipulation allowed for "individual sites" -- whatever that means, not sure if my site qualifies -- where they don't absolutely need to have this info in WHOIS, but do still need to have this info registered with the Swedish government somewhere; Again, NO.)
So I'm simultaneously pleased and annoyed to relaunch my personal art site at MOOSEY.ART! I don't actually have any new art there, of course, but at least my domain being gone can no longer be an excuse for not getting art done. While I was at it, I also got nanimoose.com, which for now will just forward over to moosey.art. But it's good to have a backup, I fucking suppose!
Also I've been seeing an unexpected flood of new watches over the past couple days, both here on FA and over on Bluesky. Hey! Welcome! I'll post new art eventually!
Other than that? Cats are good. Work is good. Mostly healthy. Scared for '25. How's by you?

Tiny update
Posted a year agoSince I've been very silent, I figured I should at least give a little journal update on stuff here.
But yeah, I should address the inactivity first, I guess. Certainly it hasn't been unusual for me to take breaks of a month or two in the past. Typically this would happen when I felt my art was getting stale or repetitive, but after a healthy break I'd return with some fresh new perspective. This doesn't seem to be happening this time, and I'm increasingly disappointed with what comes out when I do try to draw. Dunno what to do about that. I probably need to force myself to practice doodling, even just quick rough things, every day.
In better news, my cat Twix (one of the two adoptees I mentioned in my last journal, nearly a year ago) has finally overcome a long battle with a disease called FIP. This is a fairly new disease, a coronavirus that attacks the feline nervous system, and is nearly always fatal if left untreated. On top of that, while there are treatments, none of them have been approved by the FDA in the US, so to get them you have to go to weird gray (and less-than-gray) markets. But! After two long, LONG rounds of treatments, she is finally clear of all symptoms and does not appear to be relapsing.
One last bit of news (and I'm going to be very vague about this) is positive. Job good! It's been exciting to be part of the foundation of a new small company, especially one that's starting to look like it could have a bright future.

Moose Status
Posted 2 years agoHey y'all! I've been dark here for a while, so I thought I would chime in.
No, I didn't silently leave during the recent rule-change debacle. I did set up an Itaku profile out of curiosity, but that's been silent too. While these rules don't seem to affect me too directly, I am quite disappointed in FA for pretty deeply cutting a bunch of artists I care about, who absolutely don't draw anything that could reasonably be considered underage. But that's a whole other topic.
So there have been a number of things going on that's been keeping me from drawing recently:
#1: Job. I'm in a kind of long transition from an old job to a new job. The new job is a brand new company, so there's lots of paperwork and weird legal stuff happening.
#2: Computer. My old rig was getting unstable, so I put together a new one. This does mean I'm on Windows 11, which.. is Windows 11.
#3: Software. Since I'm on a new computer, I decided it would be a good time to upgrade from Clip Studio 1.x to 2.x, but I haven't quite got the hang of it yet. It doesn't seem to have the same "feel" as 1.x, which is throwing me off. Most specifically, it seems a bit laggy in input, which is death to good sketching. I don't know if this is a CSP2 problem or a Windows 11 problem (or both).
#4: KITTENS! Me and my household adopted some hyperactive chaos nuggets, and I already love them more than anything.

Two Weird Experiments!
Posted 5 years agoHere are two quick experimental web-app things I made recently:
https://nanimoo.se/squiggledraw/
SquiggleDraw: A dead-simple drawing app that squiggles up your lines like a Dr. Katz cartoon as you're trying to draw 'em. Should work with mouse, touch, or stylus.
https://nanimoo.se/munger/
Image Munger: This shows how generational quality loss affects a digital image. It starts with a digital picture (Moose Butts, in this case) and sends it through JPG compression, and feeds the output through that process again and again recursively. There are some controls for quality settings, and you can also see how differently the new WebP format behaves, compared to old JPG.
Some technical dork notes:
Both these things are written in pure JS, and use the HTML5 canvas to do their graphics. Some browsers (most notably ones made by Apple) may not have WebP support.

NANIMOO.SE Site Launch!!
Posted 6 years agoI've been working pretty hard on this, and now it's finally ready.. The re-launch of my personal website!!
► ► https://nanimoo.se/ ◀ ◀
This is a complete redesign, new URL, new hosting situation, new everything! What has been maintained is a full archive of my art, going all the way back to the early 'aughts. A bunch of the more recent art is available there at much higher resolutions than what I can deliver here at FA.
This site hasn't undergone any rigorous QA, so let me know if anything's broken. Except yes, I know it doesn't work in old Internet Explorer. Other than that, I've tried to make it work for all major browsers, both desktop and mobile, although my access to Apple-type hardware is limited.
Also, I am of course going to continue posting here on FA! But since I am a web developer as my day job, it's a pretty big point of pride to have a good personal site.
Let me know what you think!!

Transitions
Posted 6 years agoHey, how's it goin'? I haven't been drawing much lately, but I wanted to make a little noise here and let y'all know I'm still alive and stuff, although a great number of things are in transition.
First and foremost, and I mentioned this in the last pic I posted, I have a new job! It's another web-development gig, and I'm very happy with it, but it's the first job I've had in a LONG long time where I have to actually... show up. My previous job (which I held for the better part of a decade) allowed me to work from home most days, and I guess I got pretty used to that. So even though my commute is relatively short, I haven't found that balance yet where I can come home and have any creative energy left over to draw smut with.
And because I'm employed again, I figured it's a good time to finally upgrade the monitor on my drawing rig. I had an old UXGA monitor that had been slowly developing a dark spot that I've been itching to replace, so I made the jump to a 4K monitor. It's bigger and has a slightly different aspect ratio, so I haven't yet fully adjusted to how the ol' Wacom maps to it. More practice is needed!
The jump to 4K is also putting the last nail in Photoshop's coffin for me. The old version I have (CS5) was made before high-density displays were a thing, so now the buttons are microscopic and it's pretty much unusable. Plus, there is just no way I'm gonna buy a Photoshop subscription, and no fucking way I'm gonna let the Adobe Cloud handle my smutty art files. Anyway, since Clip Studio is so nicely handling all my drawing and design needs, the only thing I'd been regularly using Photoshop for anymore was doing the thumbnails for my website, using a batch action thingy. So yeah, the last picture I've drawn hasn't appeared yet over at the ol' Smut Emporium... which is yet another thing that's in transition!
Which means yes, I've been working on updating my personal site again. I know personal web galleries for furry artists aren't really so much of a thing anymore, but as a professional web developer it remains a point of pride for me. At first this was going to be a pretty simple facelift, but it's turned into a full redesign, and getting all the details right is taking a while. But I have bought a very nice actual domain name (nanimoo.se, but don't bother looking, there's nothing there yet) and continue to put in work on the redesign when I can. I'll let y'all know when it's done!
Well, that's what's going on with me these days. Love and filthy thoughts to all watchers out there!

Declaration of Conference Attendance [382/J]
Posted 6 years agoTo whom it may concern:
This document stands as an official notification that the semi-prominent amatory etcher and noted onanist that goes by the pseudonym "NaniMoose" (heretofore referred to as "The Attendee") plans to attend the upcoming conference on anthropomorphism entitled Biggest Little Fur Con (heretofore referred to as "The Convention") in Reno, Nevada, on the dates of the 16th of May, 2019 until the 19th of the same month. Let it also be known that The Attendee will be seeking his peers in the field of cervine eroticism at The Convention for exchanges of original works. Interested parties may indicate their availability by submitting a standard Request for Bound Sketch Exchange form [382/M], per usual.
Furthermore, The Attendee wishes it to be known that interested third parties at The Convention may recognize The Attendee by the unique appearance of his vinyl badge (see Attachment A), which will be about his person at all times during his occupancy. Failing that, The Attendee may also be reached through the communication protocol known as Telegram under the username "NaniMoose", unless restricted by a lack of wireless data connection at The Convention.
This concludes the Declaration of Conference Attendance. Further inquiry may be submitted by filling out a Conference Attendance Clarification Request [382/Q] below. Any nonofficial communication shall be ignored.

A.I. Nani is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing
Posted 6 years agoOnce again, I fed every description for every smutty pic I've ever posted into a predictive-text algorithm, and it sure did spit out some words:
Here's some smutty moose smut with Nani, because I think it works for me!
No, Jaz, that doesn't mean I've magically figured out how to sex better! Heh, so this is canon.
Sometimes I like the result of selective breeding or genetic engineering. But that's the sort of backstory I don't know about.
Every now and then, leave out the toys for GirlNani.
I've rejiggered my drawing hand. Both are better now!
Sex tip from Peggy: If you're kinky enough, it doesn't feel nearly as pudgy as I drew it.
It's a bit rough, but I kinda like the love child between a Brontosaurus and a bigger, juicier cock. Hooray!
Guppy asked me to turn down a gerbil?
Hey, did you know that there's a large squishy dildo in his tail I don't know if I've ever drawn.
He's just trying to get to the end of Episode 1.
Learning how to do a bunch of other familiar butts. These were of course originally intended as a furry stereotype that skunk girls like it in the lake.
Egads, a moose with his right hand!

Moosey Plans for 2019 (also FC & BLFC)
Posted 6 years agoHey, it's another new year, filled with the same sort of shit! ...Or is it? I'm considering just getting weird with it this year, and leaning more heavily into my kinks and raunchiness in the art I put out. It seems every year we loose more and more Internet ground to the safe, sanitized, kid-friendly, general-audience mentality. The implosion of Tumblr porn is sending out ripples, and I expect other corporate-backed platforms (lookin' at you, Twitter) to follow suit sooner rather than later. If we won't fight for our filth, who will?
Also, I've been unemployed for a while now, and it's getting old. I've had my feelers out in more traditional ways to no avail, so I may as well put one out here. Soooo if anyone's looking for a full-stack node/js/general web developer sort of guy in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area, drop me a private message or something!
So yeah, Further Confusion is just a couple weeks away, and I'll be there. As usual, I'll be lurking around public tables (probably the ones on the lower floor of the convention hall annex between the two hotels), and if I'm not busy I'd be happy to doodle porn in sketchbooks.
BLFC is a few months out, and I'll be there too, although I haven't had any luck in that hotel room-block lottery they have going this year. Other BLFC-goers, how has your experience been with that system? From what little anecdotal evidence I've seen, it seems like not a lot of people have gotten "in" yet. I'm not sure if this is better or worse than the first-come-first-serve system they've had in the past.. This system seems a little fairer, but I worry that it may be open to abuse. Are people getting as many friends as they can to all go in on the lottery in hopes of getting better rooms? Is there going to be an organized conglomerate of con-room scalpers or something? Though given that the GSR only has 2000 rooms (and not all of them are given to the con block, probably not by a long shot) , and the con has about 6000 attendees, the scarcity of rooms does seem like a big problem with no easy solution.

How To Be A Moose At BLFC

39.523464 N, 119.778846 W (or thereabouts)
But seriously, the non-conblock rooms at the GSR are getting more expensive every year. I'm considering next year getting a cheapo room at the Peppermill or somewheres and shuttling back and forth. Even if you have to pay for a few Lyfts every day, it's way way cheaper.
What day are you getting there?
Thursday, at some point? I'm driving in, so I don't know exactly when I'll get there.
Who will you hang out with during the con?
Porn-drawers and poker-players!
Do you do free art?
I usually do! If you can catch me sitting at one of the hangout tables and I don't already a pile of stuff to do, I'll gladly draw you something.
What is your gender?
Antlered
How tall are you?
Middlin'
Are you looking for a 'mate'?
Crikey! I'm always on the lookout for bogans to be me mates!
Oh right, furries are involved, not Australians. That's very different.
Did.. Did I seriously just get propositioned by a questionnaire?
Can I talk to you?
No.
Can I touch you? Can I hug/snuggle you?
Yes, but I must reiterate, no talking. Don't ruin this for me.
How can I find you?
I've been seeing people putting Twitter handles and such here.. My experience is that there's usually very little cel/net access in the con area, so good luck with that. I should be pretty easy to spot tho, I got this Big Ol' Vinyl Badge I'll be wearing.
Can I visit your room?
You'll have to find it first, coppers!
Can I buy you drinks?
I like drink! Drink me get lovely person all the time.
Are you nice?
Of course I'm nice! I'm easily the 3rd or 4th nicest moose you'll ever meet.
But again, no talking to me.
Do you have an artist table?
No dealer room/artist alley table for me. But there will be art, and I will sit at tables. Learn to ask less vague questions, prewritten questionnaire!
Will you be going to parties?
Art parties maybe, if I can find any. Video game parties too, maybe. I'm not much for the loud drinky parties tho.
What/where will you be eating?
I will be going to various establishments where I can exchange currency for prepared plant and animal matter, which I will then chew into a mushy paste, and then process that via a series of dedicated organs to extract nourishment. It's a complicated and frankly disgusting process, but I encourage everyone to try it at least once!
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
Yes, if you can draw. Don't waste my pages with stick figures please.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Yes, if you are fun. Or if you are food.
Can I take your picture?
I wasn't going to bring it with me to the con. It's not yours, anyway. It's mine.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
This year, I am going to do my best to attend BLFC!

2018 Con Schedule and End-of-Raffle Stuff
Posted 7 years agoLet's start 2018 off right: With statistics! The 2017 Holiday Raffle (which is now closed) had 84 entrants. I produced 8 art posts using 14 of those entrants' characters. That's a win-rate of 17%, which isn't too shabby! I didn't quite get to do all the pieces I wanted, but I gotta start concentrating on real-life again. These raffles are always a fun way to push myself into drawing characters and situations that I normally wouldn't do, and give back to my watchers in the process. So I want to thank everybody who entered for offering themselves up, and especially for being level-headed and understanding about the process; So much so that I can say this raffle was totally, 100% drama-free!
My usual two conventions are a lock for this year, namely Further Confusion in January in San Jose, and Biggest Little FurCon in May in Reno. This leaves my year pretty front-loaded with cons, so I'm on the lookout for another one to go to, ideally in late summer or autumn. I'm not really keen to try to go to AnthroCon (getting good hotel and flights seems like an impossible task). Anybody got some options for me to consider?

Holiday Freebies!!
Posted 8 years agoTHIS RAFFLE IS CLOSED. Original journal preserved below.
The days get shorter, the temperature drops, and a moose draws weird smut for strangers on the Internet. Yes, it's holiday art raffle time again! Just as in the past couple years, I'll be doing a few free arts featuring characters pulled from people who respond to this journal. But this time I'm just looking for characters to draw, and I'll be making up situations and pairings for 'em! Pairings may involve my own characters, and/or other raffle entrants.
To enter, simply reply below with these few bits of information:
1: The character's Name (if different from your FA account name)
2: Some sort of Reference (model sheets or existing art or even just a text description, whatever best represents that character's design. Be sure to note species and gender if not clear in the reference!)
3: The character's Sexuality (Be sure to indicate character's interest not only for M/F but nonbinary genders as well. This helps me decide who can go with who!)
4: Which of Santa's lists is the character on, Naughty or Nice? (All art from this raffle will be NSFW, but your choice here drives the context in which your character may appear.)
And a few rules to keep this thing from going off the rails:
A. By replying to this journal, you're granting me permission to draw your character in a sexual situation of my choosing within the next month or so. In return, I'll try to not be purposefully trollish or dickish with this privilege.
B. Don't stuff the ballot box. One entry per person. If I find you've been using multiple accounts to enter multiple times, you will be removed from this and all future raffles.
C. If your character is not picked, don't wine about it. Seriously, DON'T. I will bring out the banhammer over this.

FC's Pan-Gender Bathroom Nightmare!
Posted 8 years agoI don't mean that in like a metaphorical bigoted way, of course. I fully support the idea, and it's especially important to have options like this for our fandom, where so many are not at the usual ends of the gender spectrum. It's just that it literally gave me a bad dream.
So many of the public bathrooms at FC were open to any gender. They did this by slapping up paper "Unisex Bathroom" signs over the existing usual "Men" and "Women" placards, and everyone was free to use whichever one they wanted. The equipment inside was still the same; One of the pairs of bathrooms had urinals, and the other had tampon receptacles (that's what those weird slot things in the stalls are, guys; don't poke your fingers around in there).
So here's the dream I had: I'm at the con, and I really gotta go, so I run into one of these bathrooms. Two ladies are in there, and they're giving me this cold stare like I interrupted a really private conversation or something. I awkwardly try to break the ice, "Hey there! This is weird, right?" Nothing but silence. So then it turns out that instead of stalls (like in reality) this bathroom only has those little fold-out potty seats in the wall that are just out in the open for everyone to see -- you know the ones! So I slip my pants down and hop on this thing, trying not to expose my junk to these two strangers who keep shooting me dirty looks back over their shoulders. And for a good 30 seconds or so, I try to make myself pee, but of course I just can't do it. Eventually I just have to hike my pants up and shuffle out of there as fast as my shameful cis-male legs can take me.

High Quality Word Salad (plus FC and stuff)
Posted 8 years agoFor shits n' giggles, I fed every art description I've written through a predictive text algorithm. Here's what came out:
Here's a quick doodle of my characters on those Japanese body pillows for perverts! Usually, I'm not careful.
Beaver! Dik-dik! I mean, I don't know about any of my personal relationships with them! So this is the girl.
This stripey orange cat hermaphrodite pops up in 2-3 hours tonight, which is pretty fast for me.
Is it too late to submit a Canada Day picture? Because I drew myself drawing myself. Drawn on the foot thing. Enjoy it, or don't!
Fans of moob-nipples should be familiar. This here is very similar to mine. More color nerdery: The background and lighting are done in a dark room!
Drawn on the topic of pegging, and other forms of girl-on-guy assplay. I've done so at a con.
Don't forget to wish your friend's hot mom a happy Life Day.
Whaaat! It's time for your shit today.
So FC was kinda fun! We're primarily in the new annex nub of the convention center between the hotels now, and that seems to work out well. There were two large well-lit areas (upstairs and downstairs) with big tables where artists gathered and drew, and these seemed to be a big hit with everybody.. but neither of these were actually the proper Creators Lounge. That was tucked away in the 3rd floor of the far hotel, behind some panel rooms and the Quiet Space, completely unmarked save for on maps. That room did provide a nice haven when me and a few artist friends wanted a quiet, private place to draw for a while that was away from the main crowd! So I think it all worked out pretty well. New dealer and art show spaces were nice too, no drama with getting enough light or airflow or anything.
I'm also quitting my day job after a number of rather drastic downturns there. I put in my two weeks notice yesterday. I know it's the right thing for me to do for my career, but it still feels like I'm kicking puppies or something. :[

Moar Pixels!
Posted 8 years agoHey, let's talk about these newfangled high resolution monitors and how they may change how we send cartoon animal smut around on the web!
My current desktop monitor (a fairly old UXGA, 1920x1200) has been developing a dark spot, which is making it less than ideal for doing digital coloring work, so I'm looking at replacements. I also sometimes use my Surface Pro 4 for drawing, which has a much higher resolution (2736 x 1824).
Also, I've recently been drawing in resolutions much higher than my desktop monitor displays, and shrinking them down significantly for release. So for pretty much any art I've posted in the past half year or so, I've got versions that are higher resolution and often not as tightly cropped sitting around on my HD.
Most newer devices (especially portable devices like phones and tablets) are getting an incredible pixel density that was unthinkable a few years ago. It's not uncommon to see phones with screens as small as 5 or 6 inches pushing a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. Much of the web wasn't really designed with these higher density displays in mind, and often leave images to get pretty mangled by upscaling. This includes most furry art sites, including FA and my own personal gallery. FA in particular still has a "limit" (although it's easily breakable) of 1280 pixels in either dimension for uploaded artwork, and I scale down most of my work to fit within that limit.
So this raises a couple big questions:
How should higher-resolution furry art be distributed?
Naturally, file size increases with resolution (unless of course you're also dropping compression quality). A complication here is that since images have two dimensions, an image that looks only "twice" as big actually has 4 times the pixels. One of my larger images in its natural resolution in lossless PNG form ends up in the 4 or 5 megabyte range, which is large enough that it'd probably load too slowly for a lot of people.
What's the answer here? Upload it in 1200px "display" resolution, and offer a full-rez download link? Upload different versions or maybe an alt account for high-rez releases? Wait for FA to get some sort of high-rez-friendly feature set? Or just keep hoarding all the good stuff to myself? >_>;; Are higher-rez releases actually desired at all out there?
What sort of monitor is right for high-resolution drawing?
There's a lot of weird options in monitors these days. You've got these super-wide curved monitors that try to do the job of two side-by-side monitors; You've got competing adaptive refresh rate techs like G-SYNC and FreeSync; You've got competing expanded color spectrum techs like Adobe RGB and HP DreamColor. It's all pretty confusing, and I don't think any of that would actually help with drawing. Well, the expanded color spectrum might.. but I don't think Clip Stuido would even know how to use it.
I think I'm leaning towards a fairly vanilla 4K monitor (3840 x 2160), but I'd probably also have to upgrade my graphics card to push that many pixels. Dell has a good one that's relatively affordable and has IPS (which has better color reproduction than your usual TN type display).

Doing some freebies! (closed)
Posted 9 years agoIt's becoming a tradition of sorts for me to do a few art freebies around holiday time.. So let's do this!
Pitch me some ideas! Is there some character pairing or fetish you'd like to see me take on? Maybe an OC or Rule 34 you'd like to see in my style? Just leave a comment here in the journal, or send me a private message. I'll be picking a few that sound like fun things to draw... and drawing them! :O
[This raffle is closed! Journal still exists for reference.]

Secret Santa for Artists
Posted 9 years agoJuindalo is running a Secret Santa for artists, and I'm participating! It's basically a big random art trade, and you can choose if you want to trade clean, suggestive, or filthy filthy porn. It's a mystery which way I went for!
It seems like fun and a break from all the political bickering that's been going on, and the guy running it has done these very successfully in years past.. so I encourage all artists out there to sign up too!
Rules and sign-up are over here:

BLFC, Gratitude, Hackers, and Social Media
Posted 9 years agoWell okay! I guess a lot of stuff has happened in the past week or so.
First of all, BLFC was an absolute blast! I had my new portable drawing rig with me, which is a brand-spankin' new Surface Pro 4 connected to an ancient Wacom Bamboo Fun. Yeah, that's an odd combination, but for whatever reason using the on-screen drawing sinks my skill level down to like "dumb 5-year-old with a crayon" level. I'm comfortable with an external wacom, and I can draw reasonable well on paper, but any on-scree drawing device I've ever tried to use is just disaster. I've tried the Surface, the iPad Pro, the Cintiq Companion... None of them work for me. So I guess I'll just stick to using an external Wacom.
This also meant that I was able to do some digital drawing there at the con (see my recent Moose Bros pic), and also upload sketchbook sketches directly from the con (these got bulldozed by the rollback here, but can still be found on my personal site).
I was also kind of bowled over by how many people were coming up to me with a "hey, I love your art", which makes me feel all super-squishy inside.. There's usually one or two, but at this BLFC there were a good half-dozen or so (and even one delivered by Nintendo DS Street-Pass). I can't thank people enough for this! It warms the cockles of my cold, perverted heart.
The recent hacker kerfuffle here has finally pushed me past my breaking point on resistance to social media. Yep, I've signed up for a Twitter account:
https://twitter.com/NaniMoose
This is going to be a place not for (much) personal gab, but a feed that gets notices whenever I post art.. and since that's all porn, I've made it a private feed. So follow it if you want notifications of new Nani art banged directly into your twitter-holes. I also plan on signing up for Telegram soon, since a lot of my existing social circles seem to be migrating there.
And no past-FA-downtime journal would be complete without a list of where else to find me on the web...
A full archive of my art can always be found on my personal site: http://nanimoose.furryhome.com/
And the finished pieces (but not so many of the sketches and scraps) are also posted to Weasyl: https://www.weasyl.com/~nanimoose

BLFC 2016!
Posted 9 years agoHoly shit people, it's almost time for the.. Biannual Lenticular Fetishist Convention* next week! Who all's going?! Well I am, for one! I'll probably be most easily found at the common tables, looking for books to draw titties n' dicks in. But I also plan on competing in the BLFC charity poker tournament, and attending any art-swap parties I can find. And I'll be taking advantage of all that Reno has to offer, like for instance staying inside the GSR and avoiding downtown at all costs.

Big update to MOOSEBOUND!
Posted 9 years agoI've made a big update to my Starbound mod that adds the Nani race to the game! This makes it fully compatible with the latest version of the game (Beta v. Glad Giraffe - Update 3).
http://nanimoose.furryhome.com/mb
So it's been about a year since my last update, and I'd had a few people contact me about how it no longer worked.. and there's lots of new game features to take advantage of! This time around, we have:
- New custom pet species, comes with ship
- 8 tiers of custom spaceships (slightly phallic)
- Added naughty posters as rare treasure drop
- Removed Nani spawner in favor of new Tenant system
- All Nani armor items can be dyed in all 12 colors
- Replaced some hair styles and body color options
A note about pets:
Until I made my own pet species for this mod, I didn't really understand how pets worked in the game. They always seemed to be grumpy no matter what I did. There's a reason for this: The regular pet is designed to eat food very often, like every couple of minutes, and without it they get grumpy. On top of this, the pet starts out locked in your cockpit for the first huge part of the game, so by the time you get him freed, he's always really grumpy from hunger. Even once you feed him, the pet might remain grumpy if he decides he doesn't like the food he's been given, which is random for your specific pet, and for every type of food in the game. I didn't want the Nani's pet to be so needy, so it hardly requires any food at all. Besides, it would be hard to eat with that ball gag on.
A note about tenants:
You can attract tenants by setting up rooms that are sealed with at least 1 door and contain a bed. There's a Nani version of the regular tenant that acts just like any other species of regular tenant, and has the same random chance of showing up as any other regular tenant in a plain room. But throw in one or more furry porn posters in the room (these are now a random but rare treasure drop) and you'll get a special class of Nani tenant that gives interesting items as rent. Tenants will also offer you dumb little random quests and such. Also, it's perfectly OK to set up rooms inside your spaceship and rent them out to tenants! This is especially handy late in the game, once you've expanded your ship quite a few times.
Enjoy!

FC, Con Crud, Surface Drawing
Posted 9 years agoWell, FC has come and gone once again. I ended up catching the crud fairly early on this year and missing a pretty sizable chunk of the con, so I apologize people I'd promised to meet up or draw with, and it just didn't happen. I also want to thank
aquacoon and
argonvile for some super fun times, and trying valiantly to match my meal schedule.
I had bought a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 just before the con, with the idea I'd try it out as a drawing device, and then I have 30 days to return it if I don't like it. I have some thoughts on it.
What I like: The screen is fantastic. Really good color reproduction under most conditions, and an insane pixel density. Portability is excellent too, this is the first laptop I've had where I can just have it with me in my bag all day and not have it break my back. I'm impressed with how much power this mid-range i5 model packs -- enough for casual games, easily.
What I don't like: There's a bug where sometimes it won't wake up the screen when coming back from hibernation; This seems to happen especially often if I've closed it with Clip Studio open -- which, of course, is more often than not. Hopefully there's a fix for this coming soon.
More importantly, I just can't get the hang of this style of drawing. I'm really good with a Wacom detached from the screen; I'm not too shabby with pen and paper; But for whatever reason, give me one of these draw-on-the-screen devices and I may as well be a 5-year-old with a crayon. I can't draw with any precision or symmetry.
Additionally, the Surface doesn't fully deactivate touch sensitivity when you're drawing with the pen. This is especially irksome with all of Windows 10's touch actions on the edges of the screen. You'll be trying to draw, and suddenly you'll be looking at your desktop or the notification area instead of the canvas.
Clip Studio seems badly suited to a physical interface as well. I haven't found a way to move the all-important Undo button away from the top-left of the canvas, so if I'm trying to undo some recent strokes, I have to put my arm physically across the whole canvas, and I can't see what I'm undoing.
Despite all this, I'm still thinking about keeping the Surface. It's just so handy to have a full computer that's so portable, and a similarly light computer without the pen stuff really doesn't cost any less these days. And there's no reason I couldn't hook up my old Wacom to the Surface to draw, except I'd look like a dork doing so.
Oh yeah, and FC still continues to botch the Creators Lounge area. They had two rows of rectangular tables instead of a few round ones, which made more seating... but their idea of night lighting was, no joke, little USB-powered reading lights.
