I uhhh kind of had to take an unannounced hiatus for like two months due to health reasons. Apologies about that! I'll hopefully be able to start being active again here soon once I'm finally back on my feet!

I need help pricing my artwork for future commissions.
Like how do you guys price your art??

A friend suggested that I put a price sheet together to use later, but I honestly have no idea what my stuff is worth. I can't really do the hourly rate thing because I'm a slow artist, so I need to decide on some set prices.

I was thinking:

Sketch - $6
Colored Sketch - $9
Line-work - $12
Flat Color - $15

I was also going to throw in alternative options like "pay what you can" artistic liberty pieces and the ability to haggle prices for those that are strapped for cash.


Would you be willing to pay those prices for my artwork if you had the money? Are they too high? Too low? Do you have any recommendations or questions? Please let me know!

I can also toss together a tiny portfolio of what you could expect from each category if you don't feel like searching through my gallery!

I'm gonna push myself to finish the last two things I owe by the end of October. I know I said I would take a break, but I want to do something different for November to take my mind off my birthday (getting old sucks lol).

I have a number of ideas, so I wanted to ask you guys what you'd be most interested in! I was thinking about just doing them in the form of art trades with a few people if anyone's interested. (Though if there's enough interest I can make it into a contest or something???) All skill levels are welcome to participate btw!

Here's what I have so far:

Match-Maker Design Trades: We pick two of our single OCs, describe what they're like and what type of people they like, and design partners for each other's babs.

Fusion/Breeding Art Trade - We pick two of our OCs and we each draw what we think they'd look like if they fused or what their "children" woild look like!

Ship Design/Art Trades: We pick two of our single babs and draw them being all lovey dovey together! Can be canon ships, non canon ships, crack ships, etc.

Regular old art/design trades: I can just open up for regular art/design trades without any gimmicks!

Let me know which one you guys would be interested in! If this isn't really anyone's cup of tea, I may make a post with possible Adopt events or something.

Hey all! I figured I'd start posting journals with discussion topics every so often to encourage interaction with you guys (or just so people can glance through my incoherent babbling.)

Today's topic is what I look for when glancing through the gallery/profile of an artist that I'm thinking about commissioning. It's hella long, so I certainly don't blame you guys for not reading. Though I know a lot of the people that watch me take commissions, so I figured they might be interested in seeing what customers are thinking.

Just as a disclaimer I totally don't mean this is a condescending way! It's just how my mind works tbh.

Here's the main things I looks for:



1. Variety of Body Types: If I had a dollar for every time I came across an artist that only drew/posted one or two body types (namely skinny and/or toned) I'd be able to commission several of them. Anyone that takes a look through my gallery will quickly notice that I have a ton of characters that don't exactly fit that category. Many are chubby, fat, or even obese. Some are lanky, monstrous/bestial ,and/or have really abnormal anatomy.

This may sound silly to some, but I can't really trust an artist with drawing my characters if they've never demonstrated that they can draw body types outside of the standard "Thin human-like furry with standard anatomy". I know that not posting a certain body type doesn't mean they CAN'T draw it, but there have been WAY too many instances where artists like this have drawn my characters far too skinny or with the wrong proportions.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly encourage people to draw the types of characters that make them happy. However, showing that you can draw a variety of body types will more than likely draw in more customers that have characters like mine.


2. Variety of Species: This one is kind of unique to the furry fandom since it's one of the few situations where knowing how to draw a bunch of different species is relevant. Obviously many artists tend to stick with felines and canines since those are the most popular, and they're the ones a lot of people start off drawing. Though I know that myself, as well as many others, like to have a large variety of different species for their OCs/sonas. I mean my fursonas alone are two dragons, two hybrids, and an opossum.

Practicing with the unique features of each species is time consuming and difficult at times, but showing that you can draw a bunch of different species will encourage customers with less common species to commission you. (Plus you can avoid that "Dog-Face/Cat-Face on every species" syndrome that a lot of people suffer from.)


3. Personality: This one will probably get me quite a few side-eyes, but one of the major factors I look at when commissioning people is their personality. If I come across an artist that seems rude/stand-offish or uncomfortably formal, then I keep looking because they don't seem like they'd be very pleasant to work with.

If I'm EVER a repeat customer to an artist it's mainly because I like their personality. They're formal when necessary, but they're also casual/friendly enough to not make things uncomfortable/nerve-wracking. They're more than willing to put up with my nit-picking(within reason), and they always encourage communication/critique when it comes to the commission.

Obviously interacting with customers is a lot easier said than done, but the way you go about it can really make a different.

I think once I finish the last couple of things I owe people I'm just going to close down everything (trades, requests, suggestions, etc.) for a very long time.

My mental health has been deteriorating for the past year and it only seems to be getting worse. That on top of real life obligations make it impossible for me to muster up the mental stamina and/or motivation to work on artwork a lot of the time. It's one of the reasons I post so much personal stuff in between stuff for others. It's a coping mechanism.

I end up taking on way more than I can handle because I can't say no (which I recognize as no one's fault but my own.). This results in me having a pile of things I owe others that my aforementioned issues prevent me from working on. It sits around and generates constant stress which only makes it more difficult for me to work on things. People not aware of all of this that constantly give reminders or ask when I'll work on it/start on it only stress me out more which makes the problem worse (I 100% understand this one, and again I'm only blaming myself.) It all takes all of the fun out of doing the artwork which makes it kind of pointless.

Don't get me wrong, I'm honored that people enjoy my artwork enough to want something from me. But I've been doing this to myself ever since I started drawing. I just need to take time to learn how to say no and how to take on a manageable work load while keeping my unpredictable mental health in mind. This is something I have to do if I ever want to do art (aside from gift-art) for others again. It's going to take a bit of work, but I'm sure I can do it.

I only ask that people please avoid asking me for anything art-related for a long while. This extends to both friends and all others. I really hate to do this, but I just want to break this stressful cycle.

I want to get back into doing giftart for people, but I'm kind of apprehensive about it.

Are people generally okay with receiving surprise gifts or is it better to ask permission beforehand?

I mean it kind of ruins the fun/surprise of gifts if I just outright ask someone, and it also puts a bit of expectation into the mix which just makes it harder for me to enjoy working on things.

I think it should be fine as long as there's nothing outright stating that people should ask on their page but I dunno.

How do you guys feel about it?

Heeey all.

I was initially only going to post this on DA, but I figured I might have a couple of watchers here that might be interested.

I really want to draw my characters interacting with each other, but I never know what situations to have them interacting in. I think it would be a lot easier if I just draw one of my characters in random scenes and then draw in someone else's character!

I'll probably end up drawing like 5-10 sketches and post them in a journal. Participants could then comment with refs of their characters on all of my comments corresponding to each sketch they're interested in. I'll then use a random number generator to choose the winner for each drawing! You get free art and I get to use my characters more. It's a win-win.

I have pretty much every type of character out there, so there would definitely be at least 2 or three spots for one of your babs/sonas.

It won't be happening until like July or something since school is sapping all my time/motivation and I still owe a few people things, but I thought it would be a fun little thing to do so that I could give back to everyone for putting up with me for so long haha.

Please comment and let me know if you guys are interested! If I don't get any feedback on this there isn't much incentive to go through with it :T .

What's a design exchange group? Think of it as a "Secret Santa" for character designs. Each member will fill out a prompt and give details on what they want in a design. These prompts will then be randomly sorted and noted to another member that will draw up your prompt! The aim of the group is to act as a medium for fun design trades as well as encouraging artists to step out of their comfort zone.

They'll also have monthly themed-design events that members can choose to participate in such as pokemon fusions, generator prompts, three-word descriptions, and many more to shake things up.

The group is open to all skill levels and types of artist. Whether you prefer ferals, anthros, humans, or monsters, you're certainly welcome to participate in exchanges.
