To the [D]early De[P]arted
Posted a year agoThe first thing I posted to FurAffinity was...
...a porn thing (but of course).
The next one was this.
Many of us were clinging on to FA as a queer-and-adult-artwork-safe life raft, after being unceremoniously thrown out of both SheezyArt and Y!Gallery, one of which have since turned to dust (sadly along with all the history they once had).
It's too recent an invented term, but... as Anchor Beings go, he was one of those who kept the timeline going.
R.I.P. Dragoneer/Preyfar.
also,
one would think that if the US healthcare system is so borked it took out (more than) One Of Us there'd be tooth and claw and hell to pay

36 years around the star, today. Hm.
Posted 4 years agoAll of that, for what? Seems like a mound of woefully squandered opportunities, now.
Every time it feels safe to come back, something sharply reminds me why I left.
The past year and more has taken nearly everything out of me, and even if life "returns to normal" for the major lot of you, it will never be fine again for me.

Tulpa Coven Witching Hours
Posted 8 years agoInterviewed by media outlet:
"Prim, what is the furry fandom?"
A bunch of witches and sorcerers, wearing the flayed skins of their tulpas.
"Um, you mean fursuits?"
Who's the furry one here again?
Anyway:
I started "work" work last year, a few months after completing my doctorate degree, and have had to make sure I succeeded in confirming the post before I'm a full-fledged college mathematics lecturer. Thing are still a little rickety, but the money and situation has gotten better, and I may be able to attend a few conventions of an animal-anthropomorphic nature.
In close temporal range would be Furry Migration, where I intend to have a few pieces up for the Art Show, and a spend week in the Twin States. After MWFF, a non-snowy-food-desert (just a personal opinion) visit to the US would be a welcome change. I do wonder about any... emergent issues with regards to someone like me entering and departing the borders of a seemingly-altered America. I definitely go for a clean face shave before I do this thing.
A bit later on, I'm doing the FURUM thing again, and staying at the convention's own hotel following the shift in venue. (The previous one had... history. And connections. To a lost ursine.) FURUM 2017 being the third round for this lovely Malaysian/regional furry convention. Come around, we're tastier and cheaper than Little Australia next door. (I live at this area's equivalent of Tijuana, myself.)
Not sure about merch, probably have a handful of my portable books and definitely a lot of art cards (some new).
Also:
Hi stranger
I love you

Aftermath of Midwest FurFest 2016
Posted 9 years agoRight now, I am in Amsterdam, waiting for my connecting 19-hour flight back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Halfway through halfway around the world. My time in Rosemont, IL was short, and chilly, basically my first winter, but all small regrets will fall away and only the tree of life, possibility and art remain.
Biggest surprise of this endeavour was the check for $158 from auction sales at the Art Show. (Y'all *really* wanted that hazard sign.)
As an artist who craves a break into some recognition, I thought this exact first time doing any furry convention art show was a success. This slightly outweighs my social goals, which didn't quite meet my expectations, but what can one do with this very strange modern issue, that having so many people means you can't find anyone (or rather, the transforming granules of social islands).
Thanks to those I've talked to and had a good time with. Special mentions to Daddo Furbucks, Artdecade, Fabercastel, Rhumba...ram, and Rrowdybeast for a big sloppy world-ending lick.
Onward to a weekend in Kuala Lumpur for Furum, an excellently-run SEAsian Furry Con.

So, ZOOTOPIA
Posted 9 years agoFrom my Twitter, the day after a bunch of Malaysian furries got together, privately rented out a posh theater, and saw the movie* on opening weekend in Malaysia:
"What's Zootopia?
A buddy cop funny animal movie, sure,
but indirectly it's a tale of any utopian pluralism as a constant work-in-progress. (8.5/10)
-and of openness for some really whacked-out Sci-Fi backstory, dear lord.
I do NOT want sequels to explain anything, the fanfics're just going to be better."
That score was mostly for it being constrained by having to be a Disney family film. I knew there was a lot more going on and that could go on (especially after reading stuff about early concepts), but I thought: hey, that's gonna be our job, with really good fanfics. XD;;; The Zootopian world can take it, and leaves enough questions open where the answers which aren't hand-waving are usually far more interesting. If I wanted to I can write my own story in that world, with it's defined properties and themes, except e.g. with a touch of my favourite Blacksad-esque noir.**
I saw it again on my own, in my home roost, and I'm upgrading it to a 9/10.
(Stingy because no birds, scalies. Deal with it, nyah.)
I have a lot (A LOT JFC my Twitter is #furrytrash) of musings and future work to do thanks to this piece of moving art for the whole family (kids movie? it's an everyone movie) and I am so glad it exists and makes so many people happy and thoughtful.
* Okay, I don't have a suit, but I wore something like stripes and did a half-assed version of the tigers' little "biceps, sideways glance" heart-melter. I look more like a Clawhauser, though. I'm even a civil servant, hahaha.
** Totally hot for Red Soul, obviously. (OWL SINS) Intense headcanon: Gazelle's Glitter Tigers are Siberian, with hot Central Asian accents (and features), and one of them is a Pred Scare refugee nuclear/particle physicist and that's really fucking hot to me okay alright

(Especially from the European set nervy about refugees.)
So, Islam is the new terror of memetic miscegenation come from the fringes of the civilized world to corrupt upstanding, decent society?
“How dare you? They are doing actual real-world harm!”
Yes, the proof has been in the violent pudding, hasn’t it?
I feel like I wear the squid-monster form because the world seems all too ready to consider me the monster I will become by extension of my horrific cult.
Let’s welcome the revival of a magnificent horror theme for the 2010s.

Yay, Ant-Man on Thursdayyy
Posted 10 years agoAnother reason I’m giddy for Ant-Man (outside the legacy elements from Edgar Wright) is, like Guardians Of The Galaxy, it’s a movie doing weird things after Marvel’s got all the “big” movies out of the way.
Like, Peyton Reed even let slip that they’d go sub-atomic. XD
From day one, I was already like, hey, Kinetic Energy = ½ ∙ mass ∙ velocity² so a shift in mass does make you gain velocity bla bla bla. Like, I’d be disappoint an Ant-Man video game doesn’t make this thing into a Portal-style game gimmick.
Anyway…

Terminator? More like TerminDADor.
Posted 10 years agoJust got back from seeing Terminator: Genisys.
It’s… actually sorta fun, like a dumb winking goodbye letter to the series which reads suspiciously like a fix-fanfic. (Except apparently it’s not a goodbye at all, yikes.)
I honestly can’t imagine people who don’t have Terminator nostalgia getting quite as much out of it.

If you dont understand how this sets a precedent for the empowerment and equality of LGBT people, then I dont know what to tell you.
This establishes the equal protection of LGBT folks under the 14th amendment.
And eliminates the idea of such discrimination as a "states rights" issue. THAT'S why this is important.
And that protection will be applicable to other cases in the future. THAT is what a precedent is.
So maybe take a moment and think before you decide there's nothing important about this decision today."

YES. In still-many countries LGBTs don't even exist as people in the code of law beyond criminalized sex.

Sometimes it's not the triumph of technique and elegance, but the triumph of the outrageous and memorable.
Even being a punchline to thousands of jokes may be better than being completely obscure / forgotten.
I don't know if my input's worth that much. Even if I'd been in this thing since 1998, I'm still halfway around the planet away from where the actual furry stuff happened.
"I knew about that!"
"Well I was actually there."
"Oh, okay."

Singapore’s Pink Dot became a Pink Patch of Love!
Posted 10 years agoFinally back home from a weekend in Singapore, where I was invited by friends to Pink Dot 2015. Possibly the first time I’m involved in a mass LGBTQ rights event.
Had my mexican-pink shirt on, snagged a pink-light torch for myself, overwhelmed by the emotions of a large turnout (and eye candy I’m sorry gomen), destroyed my chub boy legs on a giant trampoline. Stuff like that. All in all, a pretty smooth running as a carnival day. I was noted the lack of evangelist crashers this time.
Best moment?
Overheard in elevator lobby about
furious/Snares’ suit: “Tina Turner lion?”

With the jellyfish, tentacle balloons, I was wondering if they were going for a “sotong” thing (older Malay slang, for a soft effeminate “squid”).

(Party don’t end just ‘cause the pink torches are off!)
Also went with / spotted for Snares while he had the suit on and graced everyone with a moment of just-go-with-it surreality, since His Pinkness Steven’s Lion couldn’t come. (Man that should be a thing next year.)

Technically a legalized demonstration gathering, so as a Malaysian I’m not actually allowed to be part of the patch of pink light on the Singaporean map. (I see Tweets reporting a few people pulled for questioning by the authorities afterwards.)

Heads up: I'mma doing EuroFurence 2015
Posted 10 years agoWhat the title said. Very likely doing Malaysia -> Amsterdam -> Dublin -> Berlin thing with
goldenboiblaze.
I haven't locked down on lodging, though, so I'm looking for spots in the Estrel hotel to room with, or otherwise roomies who want to stay with me. Holler at me here and we'll talk?
Also, in particular, should I print up a few full-color nice-glossy 2013-2014 'Zines if anyone's interested? (Somewhere like 10 Euros each.)

A more personal talk about The Vimana Incident and "I"
Posted 10 years agoRight, up to now, I've gone with putting up the author's thoughts and others' reviews, but I've never quite sat down and talked about how The Vimana Incident's story relates to me, especially after reading a draft and beginning to draw for it.
*puts on Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack for Mulholland Drive*
Here's a drawing I made back in 2011: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6174309/
I'll give you some time to look at it for a bit. The accompanying commentary, too.
When I finished The Vimana Incident, this is the picture I thought about for a long time.
The drawing's title, Fanaa fil Haqq, is a Sufi Islamic term meaning "Truth through Annihilation". In layman's terms, one of the ways you can totally embrace God (in a decidedly different flavour from Western Gnosticism) is to destroy all trace of ego so that the natural truth, all-is-already-God-and-that-means-you-too, can be experienced.
The poor bird in the center, with his eyes pulled out to see through other owls' eyes, is very likely me. I say this cognizant that, perhaps, just because I thought about the lives of these owl-men I put through the motions of enlightenment, doesn't mean I'm not another one being put through similar motions.
Turtles all the way down. Turtles all the way up, too.
I started with Adam Primaeros, himself an alchemical life made from lessons learned from four other lives. Through him I access other lives of his pattern: Kadamon Theofonias, Terosa Bayutama, Not Palmer Eldritch and even the recently-born (-discovered?) Beithanne.
They are all recovering from a great loss of a significant other, driving them to various paths of gnosis, assuming they survive the fearful knife of Kadamon.
So you see how I approach the furry fandom. Not quite an obsession with cartoons, not the wonderful dress-up, but something closer to a modern shamanism.
I am a rational creature, but I have been touched by the uncanny, half by accident of company and half by tragedy. I am amongst those people who may spend the rest of their lives trying to make sense of the little shown outside the sadness and difficulty of life as it is, but what a magnificently bewildering little it is. Other spirits are suffering, and if we know something that redeems every ugly aspect of this world, there is a responsibility to bring it out, to fashion it in a way that can help others into the same state, well gosh darn, we'll keep at it.
Well, I hope you enjoy the book, and perhaps gain some nugget of new wisdom after it's given a chance to percolate in your head for a while.

The Vimana Incident now available as an e-book!
Posted 10 years agoIf shipping takes too long / too much money (sure feels like that to me here in Malaysia!) The Vimana Incident is also available as an e-book from Bad Dog Books!

Also some horn-tootin' time.
Alice Dryden, review of The Vimana Incident for Claw & Quill (2015) http://clawandquill.net/2015/03/the.....mana-incident/
The cover by NightPhaser is rich in tiny details and psychedelic in design, recalling the more out-there covers of science fiction from the 1960s. But where those fanciful images often bore no resemblance to the contents of the book, everything pictured on the front of The Vimana Incident is imbued with significance.
Other than those: don't people sort of chat on journal entries? Todex was on about it recently and I thought: isn't there something you wanted to ask me about my work on Vimana, or just anything?

The Vimana Incident by Rose LaCroix is now available!

Synopsis: The year is 1939. The nations of the world have given up on war, and now compete in a race to build the first permanent lunar colony.
Edward "Red Ned" Arrowsmith, a British aerospace engineer, finds himself caught up in a cosmic level of intrigue when a secret lunar mission sends him on an unwilling journey six and a half centuries into a bizarre future. But what does this frightening future have to do with Godric of Hereford, a canon who died of ergot poisoning in 1153?
Rose LaCroix is proud to present her most anticipated novel, where psychedelic science fiction, historical fiction, and alternate timelines come together in a suspenseful, mind-bending masterpiece.
I did the front and back cover art, of course, but it wouldn't have been what it is if I hadn't loved the story.
Some insight from the author:
For those who are just stumbling on this for the first time, I should explain why this particular book is so special.
For this one, I decided to throw caution to the wind and do an honest-to-God Philip K. Dick tribute. I had previously spoken to Phil's last wife, Tessa Dick, and to Johnathan Lethem (one of the editors of the Exegesis) on another matter but their insights proved valuable when I set out to write this novel last spring. "The Vimana Incident" draws heavily on "Ubik," "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch," and "A Maze of Death" thematically, but stylistically it is entirely my own.
The story begins in England in an alternate 1939 in which the Second World War has been averted by a space race. It transports the reader to an off-world colony around the year 2606, Laon France in 1153, Post-WW2 England in 1946, and finally to Humboldt County, CA in 2039, with the US coping with the effects of climate change and civil war. A strong theme of reincarnation runs through the story, but this is ain't Cloud Atlas! Psychedelics, neurochemistry, the Bardo Thodol, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and a dominant thread of Gnosticism make this book the sort of thing very few writers are doing any more. The addition of anthropomorphic animal characters also turns the book into something of a postmodern Reynard story.
This is more adventurous than anything I've ever done by leaps and bounds. I sincerely hope it wins the hearts of readers.
