I'm dropping south on Friday, well ahead of the Malaysian contingent, and am playing it by ear based on the itinerary/schedule. (Does this count as crashing the party? I mean, a couple of them know me~)

Gravity (2013, Alfonso Cuarón)

I'm a decent fan of Alfonso Cuarón, and after coming out of this film yesterday, he has not yet faltered for me. Gravity was very satisfying, even though I viewed it on vanilla 2D digital projection. I'd been looking forward to it since I saw the single-shot trailer. (Quarter of the way in, I was all "OH MY GOD is he making the entire movie a single tracking shot" and then I saw a quick cut. Aw.)
Essentially the story boils down to a woman trying to survive (if not return to earth) after a catastrophe descends upon an outer space mission. Despite the cast bill, it's a single-character internally-focused survival drama. The notion of a movie where Sandra Bullock floats in space for an hour-and-a-half is unfounded, and Gravity moves between its set pieces at a good pace. I'm so glad the film lasts for a lean and mean 90 minutes, showing a good sense of timing with scenes of soundless terror, foreboding silence, and calm character moments.
Also, Sandra Bullock's character is a mutant and her power is supernatural luck.
Space buffs do take notice, 'cause it's much better when you are familiar enough with the things that go into this film. E.g. EVA, details and specs of RL space stations, cosmophysiology, basic Newtonian dynamics. They've "Shown Their Work", though Cuarón is on record saying that some artistic license was taken with a few things, details of which is endlessly repeated by other people by now. (Including people who genuinely enjoyed the thing.) It shouldn't bug you, considering how emotionally/aesthetically massive everything else is.
Gravity also has an unofficial tie-in story in the form of a short film: Aningaaq (spoiler warning) by Jonás Cuarón, Alfonso's son and co-writer of Gravity.
Anyway: I was holding back tears after this film for some very odd reasons. One of them being, despite space being fucking hazardous to squishy organic life, there is a hole in me left unfilled because a physically-unfit person like me will never get to spacewalk. All experience of that is gonna have to be proxy.

Famitsu has some major Atlus news this week. The magazine reveals that development has started on Shin Megami Tensei IV. The target for this latest numbered entry in the Megaten franchise is 3DS.
According to Sinobi, who gets Famitsu in advance, Atlus will open an official site for the game at megaten4.jp tomorrow.

Observing a minor cleave now: Purseowners in the Sony zone, Megatenuts huddling up under Nintendo’s brolly. I’d be lying if I wasn’t disappointed it’s not on a gloriously-graphical home console. (Starting to look like Persona 5 will get it.)
Though it makes sense to have these things on portables, at least to me. You can hardly imagine the likes of Pokemon benefiting all that much from being developed for tethered-at-home consoles.
Shut your whore mouth, PRODUCTION VALUES HD POKEMON WOULD RULE SO HARD.

Famitsu has some major Atlus news this week. The magazine reveals that development has started on Shin Megami Tensei IV. The target for this latest numbered entry in the Megaten franchise is 3DS.
According to Sinobi, who gets Famitsu in advance, Atlus will open an official site for the game at megaten4.jp tomorrow.

Observing a minor cleave now: Purseowners in the Sony zone, Megatenuts huddling up under Nintendo’s brolly. I’d be lying if I wasn’t disappointed it’s not on a gloriously-graphical home console. (Starting to look like Persona 5 will get it.)
Though it makes sense to have these things on portables, at least to me. You can hardly imagine the likes of Pokemon benefiting all that much from being developed for tethered-at-home consoles.

Were you guys really looking forward to my art book?
Posted 13 years ago'Cause there's been a cascade of printing/shipping problems with my prototype copies, and I can't get it out (not to satisfaction, anyway) before March.
I'm starting to resent this project-baby, but I need to know if anyone's still interested.

Most of the stress has been from considering things from the POV of a complete stranger trying to get a copy of my book.
So, HEY I actually needs words from you, who've graced my gallery with a Watch based on what you've seen.
Blurb might require registration of an account for purchase. There are snazzier, shop-like options, but none of the self-pub outfits do 100+ page art-quality books that don't break bank.
The other option is buying from me via Cons, but quantities will be limited. Discussing that matter's gonna have to wait, too.

Y'know, it's not really about the actual date itself, as much as having an excuse to do something new.
Wish y'all a good, sexy year ahead, everyone.
PART II
I'm self-publishing an artbook soon! It's a pretty big deal, collecting 90+ pieces of original material from 2004 to 2011 (you can see them here at FA or my DeviantART gallery). Naturally, I'm super-excited about it, 'cause I've been wanting to do this for a long, long time.
