[MalaysiaLGBT] 'Missing’ student found in gay wedding
Posted 14 years agoDaily Chilli:
In the photos - taken at a chapel - Ariff is seen wearing a black baju Melayu with kain samping with headgear embroidered with gold thread, while his spouse is in a tuxedo with a green tie.
New Straits Times:
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said an investigation would be made over the claim of a same-sex marriage abroad allegedly involving a Malay man.
A newspaper yesterday reported that a website had published a report of the same-sex marriage of a man pictured in Malay attire, complete with headgear, to a Caucasian, in a church abroad.
This came to light after his family’s plight was highlighted recently. Petronas had issued a summons to his family demanding repayment of the student’s education loan amounting to RM890,000 (S$364,000).
The 28-year-old began studying medicine at UCD in 2003, but extended his studies for a few more semesters in 2008. He was suspended for failing to pay his academic fees that year when Petronas refused to sponsor the additional expenses of over RM160,000 a year.
The student’s father had advised his son to continue his studies in Malaysia, but the latter refused and returned to Dublin, cutting off all contact.
Having survived a near-breach of contract with government sponsors for my doctorate, I’m halfway between “Yay, gay marriage!” and “Saddling your family with student loans? Not cool, man.”

Most of them appear to be "remixed" from Kazuma Kaneko designs.
It's good if, like me, you needed a Kaneko "fix".Since our supplier's been... indisposed.

Persona 4 Vita, Persona 5, Persona fighting game
Posted 14 years agoAtlus Announces Persona 4 Vita, Persona 4 Fighter, and Teases Persona 5
A bit more surprising is Persona 4 The Ultimate In Mayonaka Arena. Atlus is teaming up with Arc System Works for a 2D fighter that will be released first for arcades in Spring 2012, then for PS3 and Xbox 360 in Summer 2012.
Developed by the team behind Arc's BlazBlue fighting series, the Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena has a new story that takes place two yeas after the events of Persona 4. Characters from Persona 4 and Persona 3 will feature in the game.
Megaten 2D fighter game? YES.
Only Persona 3, 4? FUCKING RETARDS. x_x
Shin Megami Tensei is really dead.
Kazuma Kaneko is hiding out at a vineyard, free from the shackles of drawing cool shit.

Mish-mash of Eastern (like, Middle Eastern) and Western (like, Wild Western) with veneer of modern electric guitar, synth and orchestral strings.
Bloody good.
On a side-note, this sort of music is very much evocative of Shuraim's reboot 'verse. Put me in the mood to revisit.

Not someone else's brain vomit, nor a product meant to separate you from your cash. You may skin a few cartoons, but these are ultimately your clothes.
It is my hope that y'all continue to surprise, bicker, amuse, disgust, impress, and most of all, continue to simply Create.
I thank you.

KL on foot, drunk on art
Posted 14 years agoOn Saturday late afternoon, I was at the weekend flea market at Amcorp Mall. Jeff and I went there only once before, and it was a genuinely happy time for me. Glad to know it still has the same effect now. Great stuff here, inspiring. If you're in K.L., it's just off the Taman Jaya LRT station, on weekends only.
Owlstack
Cameras
Old man and cock
Mused a bit on something lost in transition to CDs/digital: lush, big art on vinyl album covers.
AmCorp Mall was also home to a lovely place for Padang food.
Sunday, I visited an exhibition based around the use of watercolours, Figure In Paint at Galeri Petronas, Suria KLCC. It runs till August, with activites like drawing lessons and paper-making interspersed, and admission is free.
Thumbnail'd preview from back of programme
Notable pieces include:
“Otak Merajuk” True to the title, there’s a tiny brain trying to climb its way out of the painting’s room.
“Tembak Keliling” A bunch of cops are firing their guns at the Fourth Wall. (Upon closer inspection, all the bullets point backwards.)
“Mindscreen” 100 pieces of 2”x3” canvas, and 9 pieces of 4”x5” arranged on three black walls in a special room. Each one with a gorgeous tiny surreal painting on it. Lots of bird motifs, too.
“All Of A Sudden I Missed Everyone” Sorta Dave McKean Lite painted directly onto the wall, plus some hanging paintings and a sculpture piece. At least one giant slinky fuzzy black wolf took up half the wall.
By the time I was in Central Market on Monday, I realised a theme to my wanderings: an experience of the lowbrow crafts-as-commodity, and the highbrow of artwork-displayed. Perhaps the idea where common or handicraft subjects mounted, interpreted or arranged in a gallery is a statement that art is indeed everywhere, on ground-level, well within eyeball reach. I don't mean it in the "rusty trashcan I picked up earlier" sense, either. There is a shortage of awe, an eye for seeing marvels in things we take for granted, both contemporary (the nasty, living sprawl of the city) and traditional (structures and patterns which withstood time and wear).
At the Annexe section of Market, was a cute and small, privately-curated exhibition: American Pop Art vs. Chinese Pop Art.
Didn't have time to visit the National Art Gallery before dinner with a cousin who's finally back from medical school in Russia, and some other galleries I hit were a bit blah so they're not getting airtime. =P
I'll be back in Kuala Lumpur for certain (as opposed to this terribly-short-notice trip) in early November, for an academic conference.

US/AnthroCon 2011 rundown and jottings
Posted 14 years ago>> Pretty much everyone's back? Getting back into the daily grind? Slogging through the P-C-D? Still in phantom pain from overdancing?
Still working on how to approach one of these dang "reports", because this was a pretty huge deal for me. This one is a simple point-by-point log, and a couple of you have already seen my set of pictures and videos. (Nothing too wild, mostly stuff during my roadtrip before AC even started.)
June 18th (Malaysia)
- After sunset, at KLIA, boarded flight to Schiphol, Amsterdam via Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM)
- Single-serving friend: inexplicably met a local doctor/radiologist on the way to Edinburgh.
- Will never get over how awe-inspiring it is we can get this much metal up in the air this fast.
June 19th (Netherlands)
- Lovely desserts on these flights.
- Six hour layover in Amsterdam before flight to Chicago. Lunch was delicious Dutch orange Fanta and cold salad with roast eggplant, bell pepper, mushrooms.
- Single-serving friend: Riaz, a Saudi-Canadian MBA student headed to Chicago. Busied himself with poring over books and printouts, marking things with a yellow highlighter.
- Flew over part of Greenland. Rocks and ice, utterly manless.
June 19th (Chicago)
- First picture taken by
(my host, guide, liaison and so on for the week) was of me whizzing past, knowing absolutely nobody in a place I knew near nothing about. I seemed happy enough.
- Checked into a local hotel so GBB could rest up before the drive up to Minneapolis. Dinner was Italian pasta.
- Did a Great Chicago Drive-Around: passenger-seat tour of spots like Halsted Street (also Boystown?), Chicago Theater, the gold coast (since that huge watery fucker is so not a lake), going along the L-train tracks. Whole thing somewhat hampered by my jetlag, but nevertheless I tried to hold on to every captured glance. (Not with the camera, though. Hatin' myself a bit about that.)
June 20th (Chicago)
- Started on the trip out by morning.
- Went up through Wisconsin. Lower Narrows' "ribs of the earth"; Cascade Mountain ski spot (sans snow); wetland reserves; Baraboo (Ringling country? Only passed by the Circus World Museum.); Dells (with that upside-down White House); Carr Valley Cheese Chalet (Had my first bite of cheese curds. Oh dear, the squeaking.); llamas.
- Stopped by a spot beside a wide section of the Mississipi river with small islands for a couple snaps.
- Went through Rochester. By this time, one session of The Smiths Appreciation Course started in the car. Passed by the infamous Mayo Clinic.
June 21st (Minneapolis)
- Contributed a RM1 bill, emblazoned with the first Agong's face, to a humble collection of worldwide notes under the glass countertop of a coffeeshop across the street, in the morning.
- Spent much of the day at the Walker Art Center with Casey LaLonde (
) and GBB. Notable exhibits: John Waters' Absentee Landlord, especially Flooded McDonalds (15 minutes of gorgeous.); Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance, and the Camera Since 1870.
June 22nd (Minneapolis)
- Rained out on the way to the airport. Flew domestic to Pittsburgh.
- Quick tour of the main city. Caught stuff like Transformer Pittsburgh (bridges and all, gotta get a closeup next time).
June 23rd (AnthroCon)
- FURRIES
- Met
fabercastel first at the Westin's lobby. Took quite a while to get to the suite.
- A Venezuelan sent GBB and I mysterious items.
- Full crew by late afternoon / evening.

On top of GBB and I, of course.
- I didn't catch the identity of the dude who was only with us for only one night? =U
- Picked up my tag. Almost didn't need a badge, hah.
- Dinner at the pricey seafood dig in the hotel.
June 24th
- First entry into the Dealer's Den. MAELSTROM OF FANDOM CAPITALISM.
- Latter half of the day, GBB took me out for a drive around Pittsburgh. Went all the way up to Mount Washington for an overlook view, the Cathedral of Learning, August Wilson's birthplace, Quaker Steak & Lube.
- In a bit of a surprise find, Indian dinner at Namaste, Banksville. I had no idea rose milk (a la sirap bandung) was such a foreign idea here. Briyani knocked me out for the rest of the night, though.
June 25th
- Felt uneasy. Like a fursuiter did things to me in my sleep.
- Also, beer. (I just had soda, all the way.)
- I think
thatoneguy97 popped in today? And, uh, Jeff? Cheeses and crackers.
- Recorded about 17 minutes of the Fursuit Parade before the camera went all "Please god stop I don't want to end up like Mister Creosote". Forgot to pack in extra memory cards. Lessons for later.
- DANCE. PARTY. GET DOWN. Thanks for the encouragement, Jello, mucho muahs.
June 26th
- Brunch at Eleven with half the crew. Crabcake burger. Made of actual crab flesh, not any floury fauxcrabio shit. God.
- Said goodbyes. Con was over. Already slightly dying. Etc.
June 27th (Chicago)
- Flew in on domestic. (By. A. Shave?)
- Plan for seeing Chicago on foot kinda fell through. Said goodbye to Eagleland.
June 28th (Netherlands)
- At Schiphol again, this time for half a day. Didn't go very far around due to bad weather. Missed out on visit to Escher Museum at the Hague.
- Oooooooh the dance is catching up to my bodyyyyyyy ow ow ow
- The flight (shared with passengers onward to Jakarta) was spent with a small, Javanese-looking woman who needed some help with the entertainment system, and I obliged. When immigration forms were being handed out, she looked at one of them, summoned the stewardess and asked for an English copy. Completely Dutch lady did not understand a single word of Indonesian. (Honestly, her Dutch didn't sound Dutch at all...?)
June 29th (Malaysia)
- It's amazing how much of a grafted sprawl Kuala Lumpur looks like from above compared to the cities I've seen so far, Stateside. Definitely reminded me of why I wrote the Extends the way it is in some stories.
The haul:
Three prints by Diana X. Sprinkle.
Three prints by Arphalia + one original won in auction.
Original ofOse Leopard Warrior by Myenia, also from auction.
Artdecade porno comic, which I honestly mistook for Small Stories and later forgot about but uhurrrrr.

Staying and moving around with a sweet host dude for a bit, before popping into Pittsburgh proper.
I'll be bringing my ridiculous accent and bird-like behaviour.

Edit:
Console games are getting expensive to make, and this takes a hit on developers like ATLUS JP. I'm usually pretty cool with developers growing and moving up to big, more profitable projects, but this is one of the few times I've been sad about it. Each game has to scale up to the big HD blockbuster boys and becomes a huge risk, and when your budget's tight, you go for games which (you think) the most people will buy.
Catherine looks like a fine piece of gaming booty, but there's something about this direction which clouds me with doubt that SMT5 will ever get the green light.
I heard the tap of a death knell when ATLUS JP decided opted to have SMT: Strange Journey (pretty much supposed to be SMT4) on the DS. It sank in while I was watching the E3 updates that there is not going to be a mainline Shin Megami Tensei (and if there was, who would actually buy it outside of Japan?) just more of the spinoffs which themselves barely have the qualities I've associated with the label "真・女神転生" ever since I picked up that hard-searched copy of Nocturne. (In a way, PS2-run Nocturne's moderate sales was already a warning. It was just too long a time between it and SMTII, and SMT:Nine's failure on the XBox compounded the issue.)
You'll always have Pokemon, I guess. Have fun.

Candleflames floating in their small boats,
up till they touch the invisible roof of the world,
or likely, till their fuel burns out.
Inside, here, a similar storm.
Will we sit together in peace,
by the dawn's welcome light?
Rabbit is due for dinner.

Oh, and if you've been wondering what the person-formerly-known-as-PearBear has been up to: http://youtu.be/eOpTRBtmZoU (1:14)
I know that freaking forehead with unrivalled intimacy.

(I could do with just the song, as well. I can cut together a serviceable video using existing footage myself.)
Oh gods, somebody, anybody. This dinky thing is the only copy I have. It’s been driving me nuts.
Keywords: MAD/AMV, Shin Megami Tensei, Nocturne, Chiaki Tachibana/Hayasaka

Happy Nude Year, FA
Posted 15 years agoSome people think it's a bit arbitrary, but I think there is some sense in having milestones, even if they're just there.
"Every day above ground is a beautiful day." As it goes.
Anyway, I like putting this up for the occasion:

Ask me questions on my art pieces...
Posted 15 years ago...because that's why I do them.
Really disappointed almost nobody asks anything about my art. Meanings, comparisons, places where I stole the ideas, etc. I'm not fishing for compliments, I made a lot of them to initiate conversations.
I appreciate the compliments and witty banter whenever they do pop up, it's just...
*sigh*
At least it's not like DevianTART, WHY!Gallery or even Twinkbunny. All eyeballing, no lip. Is this some kind of visu-art community thing? I don't know, I'm not a liberal arts major or whatever.
(Need to take up "don't give a fuck, don't intend to explain" lessons from David Lynch.)

Wikipedia fundraiser 2010 (You use it, do not lie.)
Posted 15 years agohttp://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki.....edia_Kicks_Off
Today, I’m pleased to announce the launch of our 2010 annual fundraising drive, which we are referring to as a ”contribution campaign”. This year marks a major milestone for Wikipedia. Ten years of revolutionizing access to knowledge. Ten years of our joint commitment to deliver the sum of human knowledge to every human being on the planet. For free.
Wikipedia and its sister sites champion a mission of effectively disseminating knowledge, free for use, free of copyright, and free of external advertising. Since its founding in 2001, the site has grown to 17 million articles in over 270 languages, and for many of those languages, Wikipedia is the only encyclopedia ever written. Wikipedia, and all the Wikimedia projects, are always there when we need them; for students, educators, professionals and curious minds worldwide, these projects are simply the most convenient and readily accessible sources of information.
This year’s fundraising goal is an ambitious one – $16 million over two months. Wikimedia sites are the 5th most visited web properties worldwide (visited by about 400 million people each month), and Wikimedia is the only non-profit organization in the top 10. Since 2007 our readership has doubled, with this past September seeing our highest traffic yet. With this incredible feat comes an enormous duty: to maintain the infrastructure necessary to keep these sites free, stable, and running smoothly, while also continually improving the systems and architecture behind them.
