art + life updates (tl;dr: I'm alive & well!)
Posted 8 years agoSo, first of all: I'm alive and well! Sorry to have worried people with my silence... the last couple months have just been pretty crazy-busy for me, and I just reached a cognitive & emotional breaking point, thanks to a bunch of life transitions:
-I had to put down my 16yo cat (adopted him from a shelter 10yrs ago) due to progressive kidney failure... not unexpected at his agem he was loved and lived a long life, but it still hit me really hard. :(
-I moved for the first time in 8 years... to a different state... to a house that's getting a ton of renovations done (both by us, and by contractors), so things have been, to put it lightly, a bit unsettled!
-Internet here was spotty at first, and it took awhile to resolve wireless issues... leaving me to try and do everything I needed on my phone (which is a pain)!
-I got some kind of sickness (probably viral) a few weeks ago that gave me horrible vertigo for up to a minite whenever I'd move my head position. I also got cold symptoms along with it, so did the eat-soup-and-sleep-for-a-week thing, and it stopped and I felt fine after roughly a week and a half, but WOW that wasn't fun. Reminded once again be thankful I'm [mostly] healthy, and to never to take that good health for granted!
-Did I mention the moving I did was during a 106 degree heat wave... while basically the entire Pacific Northwest was also on fire? c.c; Yeah, breathing that may have actually contributed to be getting sick, as I didn't take breathing precautions and it was not long after I was exposed to all of that. If that level of smoke happens here again, it's respirator time for sure.
-I also disappeared into the forest several times, interwoven with all the other goings-on; this was much needed, and very important for my mental well-being. Nature is the best therapy, bar-none. <3
Things are finally (finally!) settling down and getting back to normal for me... but I'm very sorry to everyone who was worried about me! :/ And I'm sorry that pretty much all my commissions got stalled in the process of moving, and everything else. I'm working on getting back to each of you who contacted me - I think I'm about halfway there, so look for updates by email from me soon if you haven't seen one yet! Also, expect a ton of new art in the coming days/weeks...!
Update about the Beach Bonfire YCH specifically: lines are basically done, and the ink WIP is going out by email shortly. Thanks everyone for your patience!! I am also hoping to get the last few additional slots, to fill for flat prices first-come-first-serve, hopefully ready to be claimed tomrrow, around 6pm PST. :3 If not, I'll still make an update then about when to expect the last slots to open... bit it's in the final stretch, at long last.

Happy 4th! / Updates on Life, Commissions, etc.
Posted 8 years agoHi, everyone! Firstly, to my fellow Americans a happy light-exploding-stuff-on-fire day! Secondly, I thought it was time I made a more general update, since one is long overdue. Read on for notes on commission progress, as well what's been going on with me lately (I know I was pretty quiet there for a few months, I'm sorry if my absense worried anybody - tl;dr: I'm fine, was just massively stressed out for awhile):
Life updates:
-Had some life shake-ups this spring; nothing too drastic, and thankfully my health is okay, but still the sort of stuff that can leave one terribly exhausted and off-balance. I'd managed to resolve most of it by May, but then just needed to decompress in June, thus a major reason why I ended up missing BLFC (I was just too burnt out!). Instead I spent some time in the woods with friends, which helped immensely, and I'm feeling refreshed and able to make art again.
-Incoming life shake-up: I'm moving at the end of July! While it'll be a lot of short-term stress for the actual physical moving, an old friend recently bought a house in a small coastal town in WA, and has offered me uber-cheap rent to go and live there. This will be a HUGE relief for me; a large part of why I've been so stressed out for last couple of years has honestly been because of steep rent hikes, which is happening all across the Portland, OR metro area where I've been living (and now my rent is literally going to be dropping 80% with this move... unreal)! After the move is done I should *finally* have the time and energy again to catch up on a bunch of older things I owe once and for all, as well as have more time for my own personal work again(!) which I am very much looking forwards to. :) Not to mention, living close to the beach again... I've missed the beach. <3
Commission updates:
-YCH Beach Bonfire: the ink linework is about 3/4 finished; I'm making progress and will be emailing everyone the last WIP as soon as it's done (should be within the next several weeks). I also have a couple of slots that ended up empty (were never paid for) that I'll be offering up at a flat price via my journal, at the same time as I post the final inks. Then it's onto coloring, but this is the fun part for me, so it will go fairly quick in comparison! Current estimate for the final color version is sometime in September, but I'll update as the situation warrants.
-Other commissions: I'm trying to get back to everybody who emailed me over the last several months; I have a lot of things that are verrrry close to being done, including most of the retro pulp pinups and color sketches, which I'll be finishing/posting more of these in the coming days/weeks. I've started sketching the halfbody slots as well, hoping to get initial sketches out to people in July. Again, after I've moved in August it'll be full speed ahead to clear my backlog, but if you're curious about the status of a commission in the mean time, you can email me at electricgecko[at]gmail.com and I will get back to you ASAP!

Color & Monochrome Sketch Commissions OPEN!
Posted 8 years agoHi everyone! I'm OPEN now for a new round Sketch Commission slots! Please read on for more details if you're interested in a slot, as I am making a few changes for this round!
What's different:
1) I'm offering both monochrome and full color as options now, and
2) I've raised the prices to better reflect how much time these typically take: $40 for monochrome, $60 for full color.
What's the same: pretty much everything else! These are still fullbody (or mostly, depending on framing) 1-character drawings, with sketchy lineart, shaded/colored digitally in ArtRage. You choose the character, rating (G-X) and general mood or theme, I'll decide the specifics like colors and pose, and email you the piece when it's finished. What's different:
1) I'm offering both monochrome and full color as options now, and
2) I've raised the prices to better reflect how much time these typically take: $40 for monochrome, $60 for full color.
What's the same: pretty much everything else! These are still fullbody (or mostly, depending on framing) 1-character drawings, with sketchy lineart, shaded/colored digitally in ArtRage. You choose the character, rating (G-X) and general mood or theme, I'll decide the specifics like colors and pose, and email you the piece when it's finished. No previews (sorry!) but you can always request changes to the final image if I've missed any important details.

Here "style" refers to the sketchy-but-bold digital inks, muted/earthy flat colors, sorta going for a blend of pulp comic and woodcut! Theme is flexible; I'm pretty open to anything that fits the style, steampunk, mad max, eastern/western fantasy/mythology, etc. Feel free to make suggestions or let me pick!
Like with my colored sketches, you can choose a rating G-X (or a range, like PG13-R) and suggest general ideas for theme and dress. Recovering From Surgery, & Upcoming ART SALE!

I figure it's about time I posted another 2-part update: the first part's about my health, since some big things have happened on that front recently, and the second part is to announce that I'll be holding an online Art Sale in the near future, just in time for the holidays. :)
Part I: HEALTH
For once, some good news here (of a sort!): the persistent, painful medical problem I'd been battling since spring of this year - gallstones - has hopefully, finally, once and for all been resolved, because I underwent emergency surgery to remove my stone-riddled gallbladder (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) just a little bit under two weeks ago.
It was sudden, although not entirely unexpected: after getting an initial diagnosis in April, for few months I'd been trying to avoid (or at least delay) surgery by making some drastic dietary and lifestyle changes, which had actually been working pretty well to keep the attacks at bay... until out of nowhere, I suffered an EXTREMELY severe attack that wasn't resolving on its own, and in fact seemed to be getting worse as the hours wore on. :( Finally I caved and went to the ER, where they discovered multiple stones had lodged in and blocked the common duct (translation: This Is Bad) so they sent me in to surgery that same day.
Even though I was utterly terrified (I am pretty much phobic of the entire concept of surgery... x_x;;) I was in so much pain I'd probably have let them amputate my leg if they said it would help! And honestly, it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. The first few days were expectedly unpleasant, but I got through it with the help of friends and family (and pain meds XD). After the initial healing period, I also began to notice I felt MUCH better than I did before the surgery (even considering the post-op nausea and sore incisions and everything) which was a HUGE relief! Most of all I'm just glad it's OVER, and that I'm finally on the road to regaining full health. :)
Part II: ART SALE!
So, on a somewhat-related note, I've decided it's time for me to soon hold a big online [b]Art Sale! What with the holidays just around the corner, and with me needing some extra help to offset all the costs and debts that inevitably piled up while I was sick, now seems like the perfect time for one. :)
I will be offering the following things for sale:
- ORIGINALS: Starting on a specific day/time (TBA), I will be offering for sale a number of original drawings and paintings - including some old and familiar wors, some old but never-before-seen work, as well as some brand new work!

- MISC. STUFF: Lastly, over the coming days/weeks I will be offering a number of special things - including YCH slots, character designs and other assorted goodies - a few at a time, through FA submissions/journals as usual.

It was sudden, although not entirely unexpected: after getting an initial diagnosis in April, for few months I'd been trying to avoid (or at least delay) surgery by making some drastic dietary and lifestyle changes, which had actually been working pretty well to keep the attacks at bay... until out of nowhere, I suffered an EXTREMELY severe attack that wasn't resolving on its own, and in fact seemed to be getting worse as the hours wore on. :( Finally I caved and went to the ER, where they discovered multiple stones had lodged in and blocked the common duct (translation: This Is Bad) so they sent me in to surgery that same day.
Even though I was utterly terrified (I am pretty much phobic of the entire concept of surgery... x_x;;) I was in so much pain I'd probably have let them amputate my leg if they said it would help! And honestly, it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. The first few days were expectedly unpleasant, but I got through it with the help of friends and family (and pain meds XD). After the initial healing period, I also began to notice I felt MUCH better than I did before the surgery (even considering the post-op nausea and sore incisions and everything) which was a HUGE relief! Most of all I'm just glad it's OVER, and that I'm finally on the road to regaining full health. :)
Part II: ART SALE!
So, on a somewhat-related note, I've decided it's time for me to soon hold a big online [b]Art Sale! What with the holidays just around the corner, and with me needing some extra help to offset all the costs and debts that inevitably piled up while I was sick, now seems like the perfect time for one. :)
I will be offering the following things for sale:
- ORIGINALS: Starting on a specific day/time (TBA), I will be offering for sale a number of original drawings and paintings - including some old and familiar wors, some old but never-before-seen work, as well as some brand new work!

$35 Sketch Commissions to help with medical bills - OPEN!
Posted 9 years agoHi, everyone! So I’ve been dealing with some new/unexpected health problems lately, and along with that goes the inevitable medical costs to pay. :/ So in order to help me cover my medical bills, I have decided to open now for a Spring round of Color Sketch Commissions!
I am going to “guarantee” 15 main slots this round and take payment for those 15 up front. If I fill the first 15 and there is still more interest, I will create an “overflow” list - those on the overflow WON’T pay for their slots immediately, I will contact them individually later for payment (if and when I am able to start their sketches)!

Seems I have either the flu, or "flu-like illness" - started feeling unwell several days ago, and now it's progressed to a 100.1 fever, sinus congestion, cough, sore throat, and head/body aches. Ugh!! Not fun, but not much to do about it now except rest/blankets/tea/movies and let my body fight it off and recover.
What this means of course, is: work on the Beach Bonfire YCH, 2 Elements busts, and everything else is temporarily on hold until I start to feel better. I'm sorry to everybody in advance for the further delays! I'll get back to work as soon as I'm able, thank you for your patience and understanding until then! <3

NEW COMPUTER + YCH Bonfire News!
Posted 9 years agoI GOT A NEW COMPUTER! FINALLY!!!!! It’s a mid-2012 13” Macbook Pro - first laptop I’ve ever owned, actually. :D (And while technically not NEW new, just an excellent-condition refurb, it is new to me, so whatev... NEW!)
Got it to replace my aging late-2006 17” Intel iMac, which incredibly enough still works - even 3 hard drives, 2 power supplies and 9+ years of daily [ab]use later! It'd just become insufferably slow, and too obsolete to handle ... basically anything involving the modern internet. u_u Nothing says “time to upgrade” like being locked out of Google Docs!
So, even though its specs aren't the FASTEST EVAR or anything, the laptop is easily twice as fast as my old machine, if not faster. :) Meaning once everything is transitioned over, I should be able to work on digital art MUCH faster and more easily! Plus do a few things I wasn’t able to do before, like streaming*!
(*Not immediately, there’s a learning curve involved, but I'll be sure to make announcements here and/or twitter about new developments as they happen.)
And now, onto...
YCH BEACH BONFIRE NEWS:
Here's what's up with the YCH Beach Bonfire commission! For all of my lovely participants who have been waiting so patiently:
-The first draft (sketch stage) is ALMOST FINISHED - only about a dozen characters left to add (out of 52+)!
-Once the sketch is ready (within the next week, most likely) I will be emailing a copy to each participant for review.
-Participants may request minor changes to their character(s) for up to 10 days (from the date the email is sent - don’t worry, I haven’t sent it yet!)
-Afterward I will be posting the sketch here, with a few crowd-filler/cameo type “LAST CHANCE” slots for sale, for flat prices, first-come first-serve.
Again, I have NOT sent out the sketch/first draft yet! So don’t worry that you haven’t received anything, it’s coming very soon! I will also post a followup journal once it’s been sent, for those who want a backup/reminder about when to check for the email. :)

They are $35 each for a simple-to-medium detail character. More complex characters may cost extra ($45) if I pick them, but this is less likely (I'll be favoring the more simple/striking character designs for this)

Animated Jack-O-Lantern Icons: OPEN!
Posted 10 years agoYay, it's finally Halloween season again! Would anyone like a jack-o-lantern icon this year? :3
Now Open: Animated Jack-O-Lantern Icons!
-Price: $35 USD each (or $65 for two!)
-Payment: via PayPal invoice
-Includes a 500x500 full-size version (static) and two 100x100 icon versions (animated and static)
-Please be ready to send info & payment ASAP after I confirm your slot; I will keep slots on reserve for up to 24 hours, but after that I may open them back up or offer to others.
-The first 6 will be finished on (or before) October 16, so you'll have them well before Halloween!
-Lots o' samples: Kytheraen . Zemdar . QuietFire . Sal . Shadow . Dokuga&Vel (profile couple)
... or you can plug 'oce pumpkin icon' into the search bar to see most of the ones I've done!
My goal is to make them look as much as possible like real carved pumpkins! What this means:
-Simple characters with bold/distinctive shapes work best!
-They're basically only two colors: orange and black. Yellow gradients mimic candles, and I can make some areas "half brightness" as if they're removed pumkin skin, but NO other colors!
-Small details like spots/stripes or fine lines *might* need to be inverted (light on dark) in order to work correctly.
...the upside to the limitations? IF you have the patience and the right tools, you should be able to carve a *real* pumpkin using your design! At least one person (that I know of) has done this so far: QuietFire's REAL jack-o-lantern!
HOW TO GET ONE:
1. Please read my commission ToS - the link is in the header of this journal.
