Gretchen is now under new ownership
Posted 9 years agoAs much as I love Gretchen the badass bitch, I just do not have the kind of time to give her the attention she deserves. At Anthrocon 2015, I lent her to
everdeer who spent the entire Sunday bopping around in her and having a great time being an asshole. Thinking on it for several months, I finally decided to approach her and ask if she were willing to adopt the skinbag that she had become fond of. She leapt at the chance, and as of the end of January, Ever now belongs to Gretchen.
Luckily, Ever lives very close by to me, and we often attend the same cons, so she has promised that any time I'd like to wear her again, I can. :3
Thanks again for giving her a loving home. <3

Last minute room fill!!
Posted 10 years agoUnfortunately one of my roomies had to back out! Thurs-Mon, Omni, $164. I must know you to some degree, or be vouched for by friends.

Posted 10 years agoWhere are you staying?
The Omni

Thursday morning, staying until Monday
How are you traveling?
Driving
Who will you be rooming with?
deovacuus
CAW-O.o
teh-oshi
Who will you be hanging with during the convention?
Anyone, really. I tend to bounce around in suit most often, so I'm not normally in one place any longer than to eat or attend a panel.
How is the best way to find you?
I'll either be suiting in any one of my five costumes (OG, Pidgey, Kos, Buster, Gretchen), or if I'm not in them, I wear a pokeball backpack which is fairly noticeable.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Mainly performances - Matthew Ebel, 2 gryphon, Uncle Kage's story hour. Haven't looked too closely at the schedule yet.
What do you look like?
Short, waify white chick with short brown hair.
Will you be suiting?
For the most part.
Do you do free art?
I can scribble a five second generic gryphon headshot.
Do you do trades?
Nah.
Do you do badges?
Nah.
If you have an Artist's Table, what will you be selling?
Nah.
What is your gender?
Female
How tall are you?
5 ft 2 in
Can I talk to you?
Please!
Can I touch you?
Hugging? Yes! Everything else? No, unless I know you. Don't be that person.
Can I visit your room?
Only if you're invited, which I doubt. Our room is for relaxation and sleep, not parties. Don't be that person.
Can I buy you drinks?
A monster would be happily accepted.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Hugs are fine, snugs if I know/trust you.
Are you nice?
Unless you give me a reason not to be.
Will you be going to parties?
Not really a partier.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Hey Ori/Gami/OG/Birdface!

Only if you're invited. Don't be that person.

I don't have one
Can I draw in your sketchbook?
See above
Can I take your picture?
Absolutely, in or out of suit :3
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To have fun, hang out, meet people, buy shit, suit until exhausted, pick on
hali.

Posted 10 years agoLooking for a final roomie for my AC room. I've already got
deovacuus and
caw-o.o joining me!
I'm going to steal
kibamals room stuff, because it matches mine :V
It's at the Omni, Thurs-Mon.
1. You must be responsible. This is not a party room. I have to know you to some degree.
2. No bringing in large groups of people unless my roomates and I are comfortable with them.
3. This is a quiet room. We come here to rest.
4. No smoking, no drugs, no kinky stuff
5. No heavy drinking -- please do all your drinking out of the room
6. We are all fursuiters so we will be keeping the room on the cool side
7. Good hygiene and follow 6-2-1 rule
Payment terms:
1. Room costs will be evenly divided among us and will be $164 which covers everything
2. Payment accepted via PayPal or in person as soon as we get there, not after the con is over.
First come is NOT first served.

Constructive Critique is a GOOD thing.
Posted 10 years agoDisclaimer: everything here is my own personal opinion
So, a couple of weeks ago, a "professional" fursuit maker posted his newly finished head to a facebook group that wholly encourages critique. I attempted, with absolute honest intentions, to recommend a small change to the head (mind, it wasn't mentioned to be a commission, so I can only assume it was a personal project). I did the whole sandwich method with them, too. I praised their work, how good it looked, how much further their work has become. I mentioned the slight change that would merely change the shape of the top of the head and ears. Then closed it off again with praise at how good their work is. Their response was to belittle my opinion, say that it's hard enough to work with human proportions (which is absolutely true, but what I recommended was an easy fix), say that most critique is negative, and ask me if I could do better, then take down the submission like a spoiled child who wasn't given the asspats they wanted.
As a professional, this is a terrible and unprofessional attitude to have. Whether or not you're a pro is moot; you do not need to be a chef to know when food tastes bad. We as observers may not know what goes on in the construction of most professionals' fursuits, but that doesn't give you the right to tear us down and tell us our critique is worthless because we don't know what's going on under the seams. You lose customers by acting this way. They were insensitive, rude, and completely off putting as a "professional" and I told them as much.
If you get angry at someone trying to HELP you, you might need to rethink what critique is. It is a way for people to HELP you, because they have a genuine interest in your work and want to see you improve. It is not a personal attack. It is not some way for anyone to "tear down" a someone to try to make themselves feel high and mighty, and the pro to look like a fool (as what this person thinks is the case). Telling someone that "their suit is crap" or "it looks funny" is NOT critique, either. Someone might legitimately think that something in the suit could look better, work better, or even be more efficient at building something, and you would dismiss them outright because they're not a "professional"?
While he did bring up some good points in further discussion (saying how someone else's commission 'may look better' because you don't like the color is not crit, but an opinion), he also stated that if he were to get the same crit from one of his colleagues (another fursuit maker with similar or more experience), he would take it without question. Any fursuit maker should take critique from ALL sources, not just the ones that have the most experience (though this is a good tactic to have, what if someone who is relatively new discovered a new method or material that may help them?).
I'm not saying to go nuts critiquing everyone and everything. There is a time and a place. You don't know what has gone on between the commissioner and the customer. So a private note asking if they would accept critique, or asking about a certain construction method, or what was agreed upon between between them, is absolutely the way to go, and not on the submission itself (which I have had at least one lapse of judgement on). If they agree, hey, go for it! Tell them what you think could be done to improve their work, but do that sandwich method (praise, critique, praise). But keep in mind, again, that you do NOT know what methods or materials they have used unless they say so in the submission, and they may have made something in a certain way for a certain reason.
The person I critiqued could have EASILY said something along the lines of "Thank you for your interest in my work! Unfortunately, due to the nature of human proportion, it was difficult to get the character to match exactly. Though I do believe I have worked to the best of my ability on this piece, I will take your critique into consideration for future projects." Instead, I got an adult child saying that my opinion doesn't matter to them and ask me if I could do better. Whether or not I can isn't the matter here. I had a photo of the creature they made to compare with what they had made, and there was a definite difference.
Another professional said that if someone does not ask for critique, to never give it, even if something is terribly wrong with their fursuit. Why would you let someone knowingly stagnate if you can help it? I understand a good tenet of learning is through first hand experience, but if they're using some dangerous or time consuming method, I would absolutely step in and tell them about it.
I would rather be narrow minded and understand that I have faults and can always improve, than to be closed minded and think I don't have faults and have no need to improve because people keep buying from me anyway.

FNAF 3 IS OUT
Posted 10 years agoKatsucon + rambling
Posted 10 years agoI was there. Roomed with cool peeps that I'm too lazy to tag on mobile! Didn't suit in pidgey as much as I wanted, but I was OG for a fair bit. I defended my pokemon game show championship for the first year, and won again. This time I got a BK pokeball with the gold plated charizard card (I have the full set lying around somewhere).
I brought this up on twitter, but I've noticed a huge change in the way anime fans treat fursuiters. There was a time not too long ago, in the 90's to early 2000's, where anyone that fursuited at an anime con were met with harassment, both verbal and physical. It made us fearful of ever going to one and being able to suit safely. However, somehow, that began to change. I remember being at Otakon 2011 and being terrified of suiting as Buster. But once I got over myself and did it, I was met with joy and squealing. I even got pulled into a LARP battle (which can be found on YouTube if you Google 2011 Otakon LARP battle, filmed by
strawbunny). The past few Katsucons, including this one, was no different. Pictures, selfies, people admiring my suit and asking questions about her, who made her. It is very relieving that I can now suit without fearing for my safety.
That's not to say that there aren't still people out there with a huge hateboner for furries. There's still scattered reports of suiters being harassed even now (MandaPanda got hit for a "smackcam" meme recently at Further Confusion [not even an anime con!], but that seemed to just be an isolated incident of 'the knockout game' rather than any real hate). But thankfully, those haters seem to spew their filth behind the safety of their computer monitors, where it can easily be ignored (or countertrolled for lulz). I am just thankful of this change in most anime fans' demeanor toward furries. As Agent Elrond said over twitter, "We may be in different boats, but we're in the same Fandom Fleet."

Help fix Freezeframe's camera!
Posted 11 years agoSo at this past FA:U,
costello took a fall from the hotel's poorly constructed stage. He was fine, however, a very expensive camera donated by
freezeframe for the con's use was not. Costello's attempt to get an insurance payout from the hotel ended up with them pretty much saying they aren't getting a cent.
That's where you come in!
Costello started an indiegogo on his own volition to try to recoup the loss (to the tune of $2,400). If you've seen any high-end con video (or remember his butt getting in the way of dance competitions on stage in Anthrocon's past, haha) you'll know that he is an excellent videographer and this is a very major blow to him and his work. Please check out the Indiegogo (and a much more detailed story) below, and consider donating! If you cannot donate, please spread the word!

Anthrocon 2014 Music Video "Compass" is OUT!
Posted 11 years agoAC journal thing
Posted 11 years agoAC is always a blur for me. It's a mess of running around and suiting.
This year was a little different. Almost every moment was spent working with
sheppymomma on the AC dance video!
It was just a little sad for me, that almost my entire con was eaten up doing this video. I am incredibly grateful to be in the video, and I know the video will be great and worth it, but a lot of the things I wanted to do were missed. I know I will be able to see them on youtube later, though!
Also my feet. They were sore and aching after only the first day, so it made filming and general walkabouts incredibly painful, so a lot of the time I wasn't in a great mood, which sucked! I still managed to see a lot of familiar faces and meet some new ones, though, so I still had loads of fun. <3
Also, that fucking toucan gryphon that
kironeem made. GodDAMN.

Military
Posted 11 years agoThe results of the Air Force Quality Force Review Board are out, and unfortunately, I did not make the cut. I will be separating on 29 September this year. I was hoping for the best, but still expecting the worst..but it doesn't make it feel any less shocking to get the news.
It's been my honor to serve these last 9 years. I hope I will continue to serve the military, on the civilian side.
