Good afternoon all, hope this Thursday finds you well, I just completed my last commission on that list! (That's not unusual, but it is unusual for me to spend 25 hours on something! So I hope you enjoy it when it get's posted!) And I'm looking at my built up emails and mssgs on here and don't know where to start.
This is just a bit of a general catch up journal, my head has been all over the place recently, and current world and UK events have really been taking their toll on my mental heath, I've dealt with depression since I was about 15, but this is the first time it's hit me hard and I've struggled to find some way to bolster my self up, 15 year old me didn't have to deal with such on-the-doorstep climate change effects and the would-be-PM of his country saying people who 'hate' the UK should be deprogrammed, while all their future goals and aspirations are taken out from under them by brexshit =_=; (shout out to 15 year old me who didn't think it could get worse).
And then on a more personal level everything is feeling very... unfocused. For a long time "get job in aerospace, get licence" was all I wanted, but last year as you know we lost our Bodmin site to a fire, the plan had been that when I got my licence I'd take over the site eventually... now, just as I was thinking about throwing in the towel and maybe going full-time-artist... my licence finally arrives and giving up now feels like a waste, but I'm so tired of the terrible way our company is run, and there are so few options in my area, which I love dearly--I wouldn't be against moving, but lets face it, I'd always wanted to try living/working in Europe, and now that's 100x more difficult, particularly when you're not actually a beacon of desirable skills.
The long and the short of it is... I don't know what I want. But this ain't it.
Currently thinking of just seeing out the year, either the calendar year or the tax year, I'm not sure yet, with recent developments at work I can honestly see the company going under from being spread too thin, too incompetently.
I still really like the idea of getting into fantasy book covers (hmu if you need someone!) and I'm enjoying my artwork a lot right now, so of COURSE I have to now spend one week a month away from home with no wifi...
I'm also having fun modelling something in blender right now, a bit of a personal challenge, and I've got back into running again cos my favourite jeans got tight and I'm mad about it.
I'm probably only going to take 1 commission at a time for the foreseeable future, if work is going to take up so much of my time I don't want anyone left hanging while I get through my list, it makes me anxious and sad. So I'll be kickstarting my wait list today (probably) to try to make that task simpler.
I super miss doing sketches for my Subscribers, so I'm thinking my time without wifi MIGHT be a good time to start doing that again, but I did find if I tried to save the art then joined wifi, it would just eat the file entirely, so maybe not digitally...
So yeah, lots I want to do, lots I'm utterly lost on, and even less time and energy than usual.
And honest to god if anyone has any experience moving abroad for work/living I'd actually be really interested in your experiences, I can be super stubborn about getting things DONE once I'm started, but very prone to giving up in the early stages. I'm increasingly looking at Norway and the Netherlands, though haven't yet had a chance to visit the places in question and actually hang out there at all (yay work, and also prioritising trips abroad to see my SO TTwTT--unfortunately my SO is in the USA which is... not at place I'm in love with honestly. Sorry. Otherwise I might be more up to considering just going there.)

New TOS and New Prices (commissions open tomorrow)

My long promised Terms of Service have finally been updated, as have my prices, and all on a swanky new website (that's still a bit under construction, but is at least up and running now.
I've been looking at other artists working at a level and in a style similar to mine and established I was seriously undercharging, but with these prices I'll be able to spend a bit more time on the artwork itself, rather than rushing to get the next one out.
As usually follows a price change for me, I'll be changing up how I take on commissions and see what feels best, so tomorrow I'll be opening commissions and it will be first come first serve.

Cool.
I have so much to do an so little time TT_TT I would love to just cramp commissions this weekend and tidy up my TOS and things but I'm actually over due getting my tax stuff into my accountant between the holiday and getting sick Just Before the holiday, so that'll be my focus this weekend rip.
For those about to have it, enjoy your bank holiday!

Two Commission Slots (SFW only)
Posted 3 years agoSo I'll be away from home next couple of weeks and drawing on my ipad, top priority is that ref sheet I just auctioned off, but I'd like a couple of other comms on the go in the background.
This is first come first serve, but safe-for-work comms only, as I'll be working around my SO's parents a lot ;P
Prices and TOS remain the same as in my Last Journal, however these will probably be some of the last comms I take using this pricing as I intend to adjust my prices in May to better reflect the additional time I'm putting into these! So be aware of that.
This was an example piece I did a while ago on the ipad, I have no reason to think quality/style will change from working at the desktop for these comms.
Payment Due:
I will be sending invoices out Today, however I do not expect payment until after I have completed the sketches are you're happy with the pose, you're welcome to pay before then, but otherwise my process in that regard hasn't changed.
Completion of art:
Intending to finish by the 24th, but any drawn out longer than that will be completed when I return home before any other comms are taken on as per usual.

Handle Change and Accounts
Posted 4 years agoSo after a long debate with myself in regard to my online handle, I'm trying out Heskynn, and it feels pretty good so far.
I don't expect FA to allow name changes any time soon, but if I'm still confident with this name after a year I will Consider starting a new account, but between how old this account is and how much I hate reuploading... I probably won't bother.
For 2022 my signature stamp will have both handles on it, but in '23 I will probably switch to just the one.
My twitter (barely used rip) is still P_Sebae, with Heskynn in the name.
But I now have a Buzzly on which I am Heskynn. That account is SFW only and will have some art only posted there, so consider checking it out if you have an account there!
P-Sebae was always a placeholder, it's just taken me a long ass time to figure out what I'd prefer.

(Art) Goals for 2022

I'm not gonna go into offline goals and aims and regrets or successes from 2021, shit's too messy, but art wise... Where do I stand...
Well before I go any further:
BIG Meur Ras/Thank You to everyone who's joined my SS this year! To everyone who has commissioned me! And to everyone who's followed me here or left me comments! You're all appreciated <3 I love doing my artwork for you and I love seeing how my work has grown as a result! Thank you for being here and liking what I do ^3^

I'm actually pretty happy with what I did this year!
I don't know how many commissions I did this year compared to last year, it's not something I've been keeping track of, though I'd like to starting from 2022!
But I was surprised at how many paintings I got done. As some of you know, I've been aiming to do at least 12 paintings a year since 2019, which I managed in '19 but I was two short in '20 and only did 10.
But I made up for that this year by managing to do 15 (!) paintings in a year. I have no idea how or when I found the time to do that.
I've also started a new series I'm really feeling, of a bunch of dragon illustrations based on my home nation of Kernow. I'd like to get a lot of photos to work from myself, but I think I'll reach out to other people too for reference photos if they're willing to share them, as I probably won't get time to get down west. But maybe it'd be better to focus on the north as it's my home area. We'll see how it develops I suppose, I have no end goal Number of illustrations I'd like to do, but it would be nice to have the bulk of them next year be part of that series -- which might mean fewer or no YCHs, which would be a shame admittedly.
There are quite a few small galleries that would probably host my work in my area, so if I can get a nice chunk of illustrations together, I'd like to work with one of them to put some work on display, maybe sell some prints offline! There's a town near me that really goes hard on the witchy/fantasy aspect of the country, so I have high hopes for them ;) this would probably be 2023 though, aiming for the summer months.
I've got CSP installed on my ipad, so being away from home for work hopefully won't slow me down too much. I've been really enjoying it compared to Procreate, which did nothing for me.
I've got myself an email manager so I can see all my emails easily and keep on top of them! (Hopefully) I'd like to go back to using that for commission stuff as it's more reliable/accessible for me. I do need to duplicate what I've done on the ipad though. I'll look into that tonight. At least I've done the messy bit of clearing out junk and unsubbing from 90% of the trash in there.
Keep track of comms, from this year on I'd like to keep an actual count/spreadsheet of commissions I've done. Technically I can go back and dig through my paypal, but it'd be cool to have it accessible. Maybe I'll keep it on my profile too.
I've Officially closed down my ancient commiss.io, which was a cool idea but didn't really work for me, so hopefully now it won't cause any confusion.
I'll probably be opening commission slots for the start of the new year shortly, but I don't expect to get started on anything until after the 4th.
I'd LIKE to set up my own website properly and tidy up my SS more, but both of these are less of a priority. If I'm ever doing this full time I'd push both those aspects more, but right now I don't have a lot of time and I'd rather be spending what I do on actually producing art--my SS right now is more of a tip jar with small benefits re: videos and wips and some unseen sketches, but if I go full time I'd probably build on it a bit more. I have no plans to go full time right now mind you, still enjoying my job ;P

Next day update
Posted 4 years agoWe went into the airfield today to see what could be salvaged, what the damage was and put the aircraft away that were taken out of 1+2 to protect them.
The fire was mainly contained to the back quarter, but our office and all the old paperwork is gone. Most of the newer stuff had digital backups, so while the PCs were lost we do have that, but with most of our aircraft averaging 30 years old or more, there were a lot of logbooks without that, some are probably salvageable.
One aircraft was damaged, my tool boxes were obliterated but thankfully not super valuable, the 3 engine blocks and the other guy's tools are fine, stores and workshop badly water damaged but escaped the fire. The steel frame of the building is twisted in the two back stations and the rear wall has a bigger crack than before and we have a new rather large skylight.
As of monday, still at work, but unsure how we're going to proceed.
Still it could have been a lot worse, if someone hadn't been sleeping on site and heard one of the fire extinguishers explode (probably) or maybe the hoist falling on one of the aircraft, we might have lost the entire site and all 15 aircraft.
It sucks, and it's sad, but it's still standing and in time will probably be back, but it's a shame to see the old building like this.
For a wee bit of history, it's an old bus depot that was torn down, moved 70 miles, and put back up at this site in the 1960s. I first worked there about 15 years ago and I love working there full time (ish) now. It's a place very dear to my heart and an extension of my home, I'm one of those weirdos who visits work on weekends just because I can...

So… that just happened
Posted 4 years agoSo about an hour ago (its 23:20 right now) the hangar I work at suffered a fire in the office.
I’m not going to go into details, but we’re a small company and I don’t see us bouncing back from this.
I knew from a while back that I wouldn’t pursue aviation outside of the dutchy, so… this might be the start of full time art for me.
I’m pretty upset by this, things were looking… odd, but up. Kinda. It was getting complicated.
There was no one there, someone staying on site spotted the fire, which is a mixed blessing.
My head is kind of shutting down right now, just had to… write something…
So yeah
We’ll see whats left in the next few days… go from there… activity maybe more sporadic than usual
Or more consistent

Actually I'd like to do a lot (all?) of these traditionally going forwards, as a way to exercise those muscles a bit. But we'll see, I'm full of traditional art promises.
Either way I went out and got myself a new sketch book that should scan nicer than that one I was using recently, so if I can get nice clear scans and/or photos that'll be encouraging.

Thinking aloud about pricing, artists, time spent...
Posted 4 years agoSo, since my full time job is a bit unstable, and also I'm increasingly valuing my time spent doing my own thing, I've been thinking a fair bit about how and if I could make my artwork pay enough, consistently enough, without hurting myself (bad joints) to survive on.
And something I don't think I see talked about enough when artists are discussing their pricing structures, is non-productive work time.
I do on average 6.5hrs of chargeable work at my job.
But a fair bit of that is spent putting tools away, taking tools out, discussing how to proceed, staring blankly at an engine until it's mysteries reveal itself... Getting interrupted by the flying club who got the doors stuck again... Work. But not necessarily something we can put down on a workpack and move onto a customer. But we're still getting paid for it. Fact of the matter is if I did 6.5hrs SOLID every day I'd probably burn out in a month. If that.
I can do about 4-5hrs of art in one day before my joints inflame too much and I have to take a longer break. But actively drawing isn't all that goes into a piece of art. There's ambient work too. Getting up to get a reference book, sitting back to consider what I've done so far, getting tools out, putting them away. Time that adds up. Normally I pause my timer when I do these things, or when I cut the footage up I loose those chunks of time, I don't know how much time I spent, or didn't spend, doing things that are relevant, but don't show up.
When I'm doing a job that involves my whole body, I can do 12hrs a day for 4 days. If I did that with art, I'd hurt myself badly, despite it being overall, less intense.
So for pricing... It's not just the minute to minute pen to paper hours I have to consider. I have to know if I spent 6.5hrs of work, that that's getting covered by the prices I've set comfortably enough that I don't have to overwork, and that I'm also not undercharging. And heck, what do I consider to add into that 6.5hrs? Is spending half an hour in the morning and evening doing physical stretches to counteract the strain part of it? Or something totally unrelated? Should I set 1hr of exercise as part of the work day, and the rest is free time I choose to do (probably).
In my ideal world I'd be making enough on the days I choose to work, that I can live without too much concern, knowing I'm not about to crash and burn with an injury, which could lead to being unable to work at all, and in addition to my work I can take art courses, refine my skills, offer better art to my commissioners, get quicker at certain things, and still be able to go out for a 3hr walk before dinner.
Of course being able to set my own hours helps there, because who cares if I spent the afternoon walking, if I'm going to work til 10pm afterwards?
Anyway.
Just brain farting while I drink some tea, because sometimes the work day is very slow, but my wages still get paid, and that's something people don't always consider as something artists lack, especially if they use flat rates.
