I've been through... a lot... this past year.

Posted 8 years agoBack in 2009 a rag tag group o furs got together and thought "why don't WE throw a con???"
I was relatively new to furry back then - my first furry event being FCN back in april 2008.
I suddenly found myself delving HEAD FIRST into the fandom then. Going to FCN, Morphicon, AC, MFF that first year! There I met some super awesome people that i'm still close with!
JUST as I'm starting to break out of my shell some of those friends (Tora and Roxas especially) got me into planning iFC2010 - the first year. I drove, or flew, down to Indianapolis several times to meet with the staff and contribute. But I refused to staff. Not because i didn't WANT to - but because i wouldn't commit to something i didn't know i would be able to follow through on. After all I was still living in Canada at the time so "staff a convention" wasn't something i thought i COULD do.
Then iFC year 1 happened. And while I didn't officially "volunteer" I helped where i could. Contributed in whatever way i was able to. The staff TREATED me as staff even though i felt i didn't deserve it. And I was hooked. The satisfaction of putting on an event where hundreds of people could come together and enjoy themselves was addictive.
Year 2 I was JOAT (jack of all trades) staff member. "Put me where you need me!"
Year 3 I was put on the board of directors. I did a year in Sponsors/Hospitality. Year 4 when Roxas took over as chair I took over programming - which i didn't mind. But the following year is when I hit my stride. Year 5 Alkali swapped with me and took over programming and I took over social media. That year was SO much fun communicating with everyone on twitter/facebook/etc.
At the end of year 5 Roxas had to step down a year early from his chairing due to family circumstances. He nominated me as chair - and not a single person in the room objected to his choice. It was one of THE most memorable moments of my entire life.
The past 3 years, serving my term as chair, the convention grew significantly in both attendance AND - importantly to me - charitable donations.
Our last year at the sheraton, before I took over we were at mid 500's attendance with about 6k raised for charity.
This past year -third at the marriott and third with me at the helm - we had 1214 ppl and raised about $14,500 for charity.
The overwhelming amount of feedback that has been POSITIVE about the convention BOGGLES my mind.
This was 100% a TEAM effort. It would not have been possible without every single amazing and wonderful staff member and volunteer and the generosity of SOOOOOO many of our attendees (a few of them ESPECIALLY so). But the fact I got to serve as leader during this time is overwhelming.
I knew getting into the role that it would be for just a few years. That summer 2017 would be wonderful and sad for me, stepping down. But it's ok.
Because i'm not going anywhere. I know that I still have a roll (rolls?) to play.
I won't know exactly what those roles are for another month or so.... but there is one thing i do know. With Nikki at the helm as chair for 2018-2020, with the hard working staff and volunteers that we have (and more to join?!?) with the AMAZING attendees of iFC, and with our slow but steady expansion into the 2 overflow hotels and staying/expanding at the marriott indy east, that iFC is going to continue to be - pardon my language - FUCKING AMAZING!
Also - to my Board and Staff who, even though *I* was not telling anyone until closing ceremonies - secretly TOLD A BUNCH OF ATTENDEES that it was my last year and proceeded to get "Thank you notes" from them. I LOVE/HATE YOU GUYS :) Having to wait til the wrap up meeting in September before i am allowed to read any is going to be so hard.
I won't deny - part of me is glad I can ease off of iFC a tad and concentrate on other projects a bit now....
But as I said - I'm not going anywhere. iFC is part of me. Now, and forever.
Thank you for 8 fantastic years iFC. Thank you for being a convention i can unequivocally say i am FUCKING PROUD to have been chair of. And thank you in advance for putting up with my tomfoolery to come.

Twisted - a story
Posted 9 years agoI've never posted a story here. At least - pretty sure i haven't. But i've been in a creative mood. This one has been rattling around in my brain for a few months or so. I finally decided to put "pen to paper" as it were and type this one out. Let me know what you think.
Note if there are people out there named Chaz and/or Scorch this isn't about you >.> I literally came up with those names on a whim the other night. kthanx

Chaz looked down at the clock. 12:27pm
‘Alright’ he thought ‘a tad behind schedule but not super late.’
The group picnic was from noon til 4 today. Perfect weather for it. Warm, but not super hot. Slightly overcast, so the fuzzier members wouldn’t have to deal with direct sunlight too much. Chaz saw the group over at their assigned area. Tables were laden with pop and snacks. Off to one side Shawn was fiddling with the barbecue.
‘heh… for a guy who usually is known for cooking really well you’d think he’d know his way around a grill’.
Chaz meandered over to the group. He got several waves and shouts of “CHAAAAAZ” from those in attendance. He was, by no means, popular, but Chaz was known in the local community for helping these group outings get up and going. He was happy to do it – it gave him a sense of purpose beyond the daily grind of work.
“Hey Shawn, whatcha grillin today?” Chaz said as he approached the weasel.
“Oh HEY Chaz glad you could make it!” said Shawn. “We’ve got all kinds of goodies today. Burgers, Italian sausages, hot dogs for the kids… and all kinds of condiments over on the table! People really did the picnic justice with their donations this time!”
“Awesome. Glad to hear it. And hey save one of those dogs for me. I may not be a kid but damn those ones are tasty”
“A dog eh? I thought you’d be more for one of the sausages passing over those lips eh eh” and the weasel winked at him.
Chaz giggled and winked back. “Oh maaaaaybe you can talk me into it later – AFTER the picnic”. It was their game. Neither were serious, it was all in good fun. But then again, maybe they should have a chat about that some time. Depending on how things went later.
As Chaz turned, hearing the sizzling of meat being added to the grill, he glanced over at the locals in attendance. And that’s when he saw the red dragon. Scorch. His heart skipped a beat. ‘Scorch is here. He’s actually here.’
Chaz closed his eyes and took a deep breath. ‘Today…. Today is the day’ he thought. No more hiding. No more sideways glances. No more simple casual ‘around the watercooler’ type conversation. He was going to go up and talk to him face to face. His heart started beating warning rhythms in his chest – like a weird S.O.S. from his own body. But his brain had already decided. No turning back now.
“Hey Billy. Hey Scorch.”
Billy, a tabby cat nodded and smiled in acknowledgement. The dragon turned and gave him that look that always made his heart stop.
“Oh hey Panda” the dragon said. His tone was exceedingly neutral.
“Uh Scorch do you maybe have a second I’d like to ask you something in private … uh .. if that’s ok?”
Without missing a beat Scorch yelled “Yo Shawn – how long on those burgers?”
“Uh maybe about 5 minutes… I think”
Scorch said blankly “You’ve got about 4 and half minutes. Then its burger time.”
Billy glanced over at the weasel over at the grill – a plume of smoke wafting off of it. “I… think I’ll go see if Shawn needs help. Later guys”
Chaz stood there, gazing at the dragon. His muscly chest visible through the not-quite too tight shirt he was wearing. He finally had the dragon alone. This is it. This is my chance. Time to do this.
“Hey dragon. So. We… haven’t talked much before. I mean we’ve both been to the meets and stuff and hang out with some of the same crowd, but, well, um…. We’ve never really talked… alone”
The dragon was starting to glare. Not blatantly so, but obvious enough to Chaz.
“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you for some time now. I … I haven’t had the courage to do it until today. I….. I just….” The words were getting harder and harder to speak. He could feel his emotional ‘shields’ breaking down. ‘Oh please if there’s a God in this universe please… let me get thought this’.
The dragon opened his mouth, about to speak. Chaz couldn’t let that happen. He HAD to get through this conversation. If not today it might NEVER happen. And he said those 3 words he’d been working up the courage to tell Scorch for months…
“Please” his voice quavering, tears being held in with so much effort “block me”.
Scorch stood there with his mouth open, a look on his face that was completely unreadable.
“You… what?” the dragon asked.
“I want you to block me. On every piece of social media you can. Please.”
The dragon was perplexed, and starting to get a tiny bit perturbed by this turn of events. It was quite clear he didn’t see this coming.
“What the fuck dude. Just…. Fucking unfollow me”
Chaz looked longingly into the eyes of the dragon and said in slightly more than a whisper “… I can’t.”
About 10 seconds went by of the dragon starting at Chaz, and Chaz staring down at the ground.
“Panda… I…. What the hell WHY I don’t…” The dragon was starting to waft smoke from his nostrils. He was clearly agitated at this point.
“You KNOW why” the panda said. Chaz looked up into the face of the dragon. “I LIKE you. I’ve liked you for so long” Tears were streaming down his face “and we both know … you will never like me back”
The dragon’s gruff expression softened slightly. His eyes glaring at the panda in a way Chaz couldn’t interpret.
“I message you online and every time it’s with one intention. To make you smile. The thought of you smiling at something I did means something to me that I don’t…. even have words to explain properly.” Chaz was struggling to get through the words. He had rehearsed this speech a dozen times… maybe a hundred… but having it occur in real time was nothing like what he thought it would feel like.
As the dragon continued to soften his glare, Chaz grabbed whatever inner strength was left inside and continued…
“I fell for you Scorch. I fell for you like nobody I’ve ever fell for before. I imagine curling up beside you while you play video games. I imagine being in the stands cheering you on while you play softball. I imagine taking you out to your favorite restaurant – which serves food I can’t STAND – all because I know eating there would make YOU happy” Tears were openly streaming from Chaz’s face now. He was glad that he was facing away from the picnic area so others wouldn’t see the display.
“The very act of doing something… ANYTHING… which could bring a smile to your face… makes me feel like I could float away into the sky… and knowing that … knowing…” He struggled to get the words out that cut him like a dagger. “knowing … that I could never make you smile.. no matter how hard I try…. It hurts like getting hit by a truck”
Scorch was starting to waiver. Chaz could see it.
“I feel so ... twisted. I wish I could just unfollow you. God knows how many nights I’ve cried myself to sleep staring at the phone… finger above the unfollow button. FUCK … but… I can’t do it. I’m not strong enough. And I want… I NEED... to ..”. Chaz looked Scorch right in the eyes and tried to convey as much emotion as he was capable of in these words “I .. NEED to move on. I can’t keep feeling like I’m.. an irritant. A Bug that needs to be squashed.. just because I want to somehow… some way, bring a smile to that face. So this is me, standing here in front of you… BEGGING you… please block me. ……… please. If you care about me in even the TINIEST amount… please… do this for me.”
For what seemed like an eternity Scorch stood staring at the panda. He blinked and looked like he was about to take a hesitant step towards Chaz.
“YO SCORCH CHAZ BURGERS ARE UUUPPP” Came the yell from the grill area.
Scorch blinked. He stared at the panda, expression wavering from annoyance, to a hint of… compassion? “Be right there” the dragon yelled back. He reached slowly into his pocket and pulled out his phone. A few taps on the screen … the last one somewhat hesitantly. But the final ‘tap’ came and Scorch looked up at Chaz. “Burger time. Cya round pandabear.”
Chaz looked down at his phone. Sure enough he’d been blocked on every social media site the two were on together. He let out an audible sob. Shaking he put his phone away and told himself ‘time to move on. Right? …… right.’ He would have a real sob fest later when he got home, but for now, it was time to make his rounds at the picnic. Shields back up. ‘Mask’ back in place. Happy go lucky Chaz would stick around for a little bit until he simply had to leave. But .. in the mean time…
“Yo Stuart … I think… I think I will take one of those sausages you offered” he called, as he made his way over to the grilling area.

Busy Month!

Just got back from my friends' wedding in Canada this weekend. .... I realized driving home i'm the last "single" of my group of high school friends. All of em are married or "shacked up for a decade and have a kid or two but never got actually married" which is still married as far as I'm concerned :p But yeah - it's... a weird feeling >.>
Up next My dad's 75th birthday in a week and half! (meaning another trip to canada!)
Then GLFC memorial day weekend. Going to go run some panels with Alkali - entertain the crowd ^_^
And jeeeebus iFC is only 3 & 1/2 months away WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE???

The "Ghosting" dilemma - how/should furry cons evolve?
Posted 9 years agoSo we're probably going to see a lot of journals regarding ghosting and con attendance and whatnot over the next few days after the comments made at FWA closing ceremonies. Now firstly let me say I wasn't there so I won't quote them or reference it other than I heard they say they lost out on a significant income amount due to ghosting.
Now before we get into detail I guess we have to split ghosting into two types. One is "mild" ghosting. One is "major" ghosting.
Mild ghosting - you can't get the time off or don't really want to come hang out ALL weekend so you come visit your friends after work at the con hotel, have some drinks, maybe even hang out in their room.
Major ghosting - utilizing convention resources (CON space, headless lounge, etc) without paying for a badge.
Now mild ghosting I get - I totally understand. Why would you register if you're not really there to participate as part of the con only to visit friends. MAJOR ghosting is just blatantly disrespectful to the organization runners. The people that spend literally HUNDREDS of hours (sometimes more) every year planning and running the event.
Let's be perfectly blunt here. Cons cost money. Registration equipment. Liability insurance. Conbooks. Headless lounge equipment. Convention space (depending on contracts and whatnot). tshirts. Most cons charge as little as possible to be able to supply these things for the con, fly out guests, pay for con space etc etc. A lot of the guests rooms get comped by the hotel per our contracts but the staff for the most part pay for their rooms just like ya'll! Sure - we could just have giant bbq's in the park where it's only $100 to rent a pavilion for the day and everyone pays $5/10 to attend and cover hot dogs and pop. But if you like having a medium/large sized con - 500, 2500, 5000 people around to hang out and interact with - it simply can't be done without renting space. That means hotel contracts. We the convention organizers are entering into a legal agreement with hotels / convention centers so that we can provide a place for people to hang out - socialize - dance - attend panels etc.
So let's talk. I'm interested in some active discussion in the comments below. And I'll even edit in items in here afterwards that are good points! What do we do about it?
Would you pay a $10 "I'm not attending the actual convention for programming but I want to help out with the con existing so I can chill with everyone" fee?
Is that actually a god-awful idea and how dare I suggest it?
Are there items you feel furry cons provide that DONT need to be provided - should we cut them to help minimize pricing?
Are there things you'd like to see MORE of that you're willing to pay higher attending fees for?
And I realize this is going to be different for every single furry - depending on your financial circumstances, whether you've only attended vs actually staffed conventions, how many cons you attend / want to attend per year - SO MANY VARIABLES are going to affect your thoughts. And that's awesome. Cause we're all so varied and different in this fandom. But we need to come together and figure this out to keep conventions going. Over the last decade I've seen so many new conventions pop up, as well as so many close up shop. We need to talk together as an active community. So.
Let's do this - I look forward to your comments below.

Coming early friday morning (best i could do this year) will be there til either late sunday or monday morning.
Make sure to come out to Three Headed Monster on Sat evening. Alkali, Xander and myself will be doing some standup and I have been working on ALL NEW MATERIAL :D
Also Dragget Show and Whose Lion and MST3K too I should be partaking in (if Xander and Alkali let me).
Looking forward to meeting our GOH for iFC2016 there too - Ms Orlando Fox (and Momlando as well!!).
This weekend will be short, but fun - kindof like me!

EDIT -iFC Block full / how to upgrade
Posted 10 years agoThe hotel cannot extend the con block any more however if you call their main number 317 352 1231 you might be able to get a room outside the block (not at con rate)

There is also the Laquinta hotel next door that may have rooms available!

Also - if you have a room reserved already but want to upgrade to a suite - the 6th floor has suites that all connect along one side of the hallway - for an additional fee they can upgrade you to these rooms. You need to call the hotel to get the upgraded rooms - and if you have someone else who is upgrading you want to be "beside" on the 6th floor make sure to mention the name of the other booker so they can note that when assigning rooms.

Also - if you have a room reserved already but want to upgrade to a suite - the 6th floor has suites that all connect along one side of the hallway - for an additional fee they can upgrade you to these rooms. You need to call the hotel to get the upgraded rooms - and if you have someone else who is upgrading you want to be "beside" on the 6th floor make sure to mention the name of the other booker so they can note that when assigning rooms.

MCFC - stepping down
Posted 10 years agoHey everyone so i know i posted my little wrap up journal but I wanted to make this a separate one.
So for those of you who may not be aware I was elected to Chairman of iFC this year. With this being my first year as chair (hopefully with more to come) I've been wanting to devote myself as much as possible to the role.
Now I have been with MCFC for two amazing years and, were I younger and had more energy, I may very well have stayed on board with both cons. But I've come the conclusion that I can't devote THAT much energy to two cons. At the post con wrapup meeting tonight I officially stepped down from MCFC board of directors.
NOW - DON'T GET ME WRONG!! I'm still staying with the organization. Two years ago I was approached by a bunch of people that wanted to keep that FCN spirit alive with MCFC, and I feel they truly have grown in these past two years into a group that has KEPT that feel while still branching out and being their own unique and amazing group - bringing a different flavor to the con as it were :)
But as chairman of iFC I *HAVE* to do whats best for that con first. I will be conferring with MCFC board to see what staff position they can best utilize me in for 2016 - and hey maybe someday i WILL be back on board there - you never know!
But for now - for MCFC, iFC's and my own SANITY'S best interest - I feel the need to step back into a lesser role.
I wish the MCFC 2016 board the best of luck, and am ALWAYS around for advice/help in whatever capacity I can for the con.

MWFF2014 aka the "All the Feels" report
Posted 11 years agoSo here it is 10pm on Monday and I'm home from MWFF and I'm about to type my con report. I'm going to forewarn you this is probably going to be one of the longest con journals you will have seen me written EVER...
Firstly let me say - to those of you who I've only known on FA or Twitter that I finally got to meet in person and say hi to and hug OMG it was great to finally turn you from 2D to 3D!! Meeting people who I've known but never MET is always one of the fun experiences of conventions for me. Of course I got the occasional "OMG I love your pics with *insert random celebrity here* but honestly not that much! Mostly it was "OMG it's so great to finally put a face to the person i've tweeted back and forth with so many times". I look forward to continuing those tweet-friendships to the best of my ability even though you know what my ugly mug looks like IRL now.
Secondly. PANELS. OMG PANLES. So Saturday evening I had panel after panel after PANEL! Some were my own, some I was a guest on! To be asked to sit in on Alkalibismuth and xandertheblue 's Dragget Podcast once again and then furmedia 's panels was fantastic. I mean - I'm sorry I'm just like - this guy. Who am *I* to be sitting in on these panels!?! But they asked and there I was! CONGRATS TO FURMEDIA!!! your panel was so amazing they had to pull the tables out MID PANEL (not kidding - i have the pictures on twitter to prove it!) I fully expect your show to gain viewers from this event! AND DESERVEDLY SO! Both the dragget show and furmedia are amazing shows and you should tune into them FYI :D
After the podcast panels Xander and Alkali and I did our "Three Headed Monster" panel where the three of us each do 20 minutes of standup. So I'm gonna say this. This was the BEST Three Headed Monster the three of us have done. Xander NAILED IT. Alkali NAILED IT. I... well I'm gonna say I did pretty well cause when I looked at my phone and was like "oh hey looks like i'm about 2 minutes over Alkali waved at me and said "no dude keep going" and when I tried to call him up kagemushi shouted "KEEP GOING DAMMIT" .... so when Kage tells you to keep going on stage you ****ing DO IT! >< Everyone seemed quite pleased with the hour (cough and 15 minutes cough) we did of standup between the three of us. Then aside from going 1/4 (i think they said i went 2/4 but i dunno.... it was kindof like ENNNG we'll say it was 2/4) in the dating game, Whose Lion went really well too! People had a blast and we had OODLES of fun right til 12:30 in the morning! Then we got together for a congratulatory drink before each heading out to bed or off to parties or whatever...... OR SO WE HAD PLANNED...
THIRDLY - The Chlorine incident.
So for those of you who didn't know - the hotel was evacuated due to a chlorine smell.
There are multiple stories online - including CNN NBC FOX - The Onion - Multiple Overseas news sites - yup international news people

Meanwhile police (and possibly FBI) were investigating it as a "possible/probable crime scene"... Furries were scurrying about outside trying to keep warm. Some with little to no clothing on. This was at like 1:30/2am at this point... and vehicle after vehicle after vehicle poured in from rosemont, chicago and all the surrounding areas (EMT/Fire/Police) trying to come help handle the situation.
Now let me tell you what I *SAW* that night.
I saw fursuiters run up to half-clothed people they didn't even know and start cuddling them to help keep them warm.
I saw people take to social media on their phones or laptops
"HEY HAS ANYONE SEEN ____ ARE THEY OK? - YEAH they're with us they don't have their phone so they can't reply!"
" FRED BARNEY and WILMA are at the doubletree if anyone is looking please pass the word!"
"Does anyone know where there is water or food?" "There is a water fountain at the second floor of the ____ hotel come to the lobby i'll show you where it is"
"The Hilton has opened up the ballroom to anyone needing shelter come over if you need it!"
I saw the staff of MWFF handling an unprecedented incident with dignity and efficiency.
I saw staff members of OTHER conventions go up and offer to help the MWFF staff and say "what can I do?" even though it wasn't their responsibility.
I was - TBH - drunk - and KNEW it - so the best thing I could do was get OUT of the staff's way and help with the social media. Tweet and RT and tell people where there was shelter and water and vending machines and etc etc.
I had "teralble" (from twitter - i don't know your FA name!!) offer to give me phone charge so i could keep going once my phone got to 5% and was about to die :(
While I did not see it at the time I heard of furs heading over and buying cases of water from nearby outlets (gas stations/ drug stores??) and bringing them back to hand out - no not SELL - HAND OUT to their fellow furs in this time of need.
I saw the city of Rosemont come and open the Convention center to the shivering people of the Hyatt and give them shelter even though there was a Convention going on there
I saw the Hilton and Doubletree let people from a "rival" hotel in during a crisis and HELP them.
For HOURS it COULD have been a giant whine and complain fest but NO we as a group came together and proved that we are not *just* a fandom as we purport to be. we are a Family. We came together in a time of crisis and proved that we are furry brothers and sisters and we supported one another in a way that I truly feel NO OTHER FANDOM WOULD HAVE in other circumstances.
I will not name names in this journal - simply because there is not enough TIME to name everyone. So i will say to every single person - on security - on MWFF staff - on the Hyatt staff - attendees in rooms at other hotels, the rosemont convention center, in the lobbies of various other hotels who all kept CALM and didn't panic and did everything they could to make sure THEY and their fellow furries were taken care of that night - My heartfelt thanks to each and every SINGLE one of you for doing exactly what needed to be done that night. You made me prouder than ever to be a part of the fandom that night - and someone who has made MWFF a con on my "must attend" list since 2008 (my first year IN this fandom).
Not that I could EVER compare MCFC/iFC to the 4600 people of MWFF - but God Forbid we ever have any event we need to handle at either of the conventions I work for - I hope with all my heart we can handle it with the grace and professionalism that you good folks did this weekend - and if you EVER need me ..... .... (and i HAVEN'T been drinking post 6 hours of paneling *cough*) I am there in any way I can be!
Finally I want to specifically thank perro for being a fantastic chair at MWFF these past 3 years, and I wish woody all the best in his years as new chairman!

So i will say to every single person - on security - on MWFF staff - on the Hyatt staff - attendees in rooms at other hotels, the rosemont convention center, in the lobbies of various other hotels who all kept CALM and didn't panic and did everything they could to make sure THEY and their fellow furries were taken care of that night - My heartfelt thanks to each and every SINGLE one of you for doing exactly what needed to be done that night. You made me prouder than ever to be a part of the fandom that night - and someone who has made MWFF a con on my "must attend" list since 2008 (my first year IN this fandom).
Not that I could EVER compare MCFC/iFC to the 4600 people of MWFF - but God Forbid we ever have any event we need to handle at either of the conventions I work for - I hope with all my heart we can handle it with the grace and professionalism that you good folks did this weekend - and if you EVER need me ..... .... (and i HAVEN'T been drinking post 6 hours of paneling *cough*) I am there in any way I can be!
Finally I want to specifically thank perro for being a fantastic chair at MWFF these past 3 years, and I wish woody all the best in his years as new chairman!
It's 11pm - Not sure what else to say. MWFF was amazing. This fandom is amazing. I'm about to cry if I try to write any more so... Peace out everyone.
