TFF SHOW!!! (thoughts on con music)
Posted 10 years agoWoah! I am like... NEVER on FA anymore it seems.
I'm here to leave a journal telling you and all of your TFF attendee friends that I'll be having a show at 6:30pm Friday in the main ballroom. There will be special guests and tons of fun for everyone. This will genuinely be the best show I've ever attempted, and I would love to have someone to play for. Bring a friend and help me fill that giant room.
I'll have a dealer's table, AND hey I'll even be in the big huge enormous band concert that happens at 8pm in the very same ballroom!
If you have ever had any interest in furry music, this is your con. There are 6 different concerts happening and every single one of them is worth attending. Here's a page with full listings: https://furryfiesta2015.sched.org/o.....t#.VOQGh8bArsN
These shows will be effing awesome, but I have another reason I need you to attend at least one, and it's a pretty selfish one.
Concerts like these are a relatively rare things for furcons. Ever con I've talked to has some horror story of a musician either being unreasonably demanding, not delivering on a show, or some other curfuffle that turned the con off from live music pretty much entirely.
You need to go to these shows so they KEEP HAPPENING. I would LOVE for the "concert" to become a huge deal at a con. Alright, hit up the dance comp, fursuit parade, concert, dealer's den... THAT is how I want people to think at cons in the future. There are so many talented people in our little club and I want to see each and every one of them get the chance to play for a packed room.
If you like me or ANY musician in the fandom, go to the shows. Don't miss them because you were at dinner, or because you "don't do panels" or whatever else. Get yourself a water bottle full of vodka, park your ass in a chair, and have a great time. I promise you, you won't regret it.
We're all counting on you.

I read a furry-written book. Did I like it? (review)
Posted 11 years agoLook, I'm not one of these pin head, liberal, pro literacy, left-wing queers or nothin' but... I have to admit:
I read a book last week.
I can't even lie. It was a big one. Like... there were more words than PICTURES. THAT kind of book.
But enough pre-ramble.
I read "Save the Day" by D.J. Fahl, also known as
nuwisha55
It's a novel about furry super-heroes, and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for a good 10 days now.
This is about to get wordy, so let me preface my review with this.
I'm fine with porn. Porn is great. I do not think less of anyone for reading, drawing, viewing, or writing porn.
That being said, when I walk up to a booth at a convention, I ask one question that makes my shopping experience last about 20 seconds.
"What do you have that isn't porn, or high school-gay-romance?"
I usually get a chuckle... then an "oh, you're serious" look, then, after some rummaging and a shrug, I move on to the next stand. At the Furplanet stand however, I had Mr. Fahl jump up, and proudly present me with this book. 2 weeks later, I can't get his characters out of my head, and not just because the main guy happens to be a coyote that can control gravity.
Our story centers around the exploits of "Star Coyote", the super hero alter ego of anthropomorphic coyote, Ted Rodriguez (swoon) and while most superhero stories tend to focus on the struggles of morality, human nature, or the glamorization of vigilantism, this story takes a surprisingly fresh stance; one that I frankly can't believe hasn't been done more often. You see, Ted has been a "super" for years. He's part of a "justice league" analogue known as "The Extraordinaries" and everything is going pretty well. He's gaining respect amongst his super peers, and the nation at large is starting to fall in love with Star Coyote. The problem is that Ted's been keeping secrets from the team, namely his boyfriend. (what? a gay main character in a FURRY story?).
See, the book takes this cool angle where it knows we aren't surprised by superheroes anymore. It KNOWS that we've done the origin story arc about a thousand times. It KNOWS we've done the whole, dealing with a family that's clueless to their second life, thing. The book instead focuses on how someone would deal with not only being a being with super powers, but apparently the only GAY being with superpowers. Also, office logistics. No I'm SERIOUS. A good part of this book is dedicated to how a real-life super hero organization would have to be run. Like, you could use this thing as a friggin HR manual if you want to help superman keep track of Lois Lane.
The other viewpoint we experience is that of Jay, Ted's boyfriend. This is where the story really started digging into my brain. You see, each time Ted (Star Coyote) is out doing something dangerous, Jay's obviously at home, watching it on CNN or whatever, losing his MIND. Star isn't invincible, or anything, so one well-placed bullet could end our adventure pretty durn quickly if you know what I'm saying. Our author does a fantastic job of making the stakes in this book extremely high. The sense of danger is absolutely there, and I was holding my breath through half of the fight scenes.
I might be biased because well, I'm a furry and I like animal people walking around, making things happen, but I got SO invested in the characters in this book. We have a varied and mostly believable cast of heroes and villains. The motivations are there, they aren't one-note or two dimensional (besides the occasional throw-away character), and they DEVELOP as the book goes on. Things change. People grow and learn. It's... GOOD WRITING. In a friggin FURRY book.
UNLIKE a furry book, there isn't any porn. I'm of the opinion that I want the porn kept out of the story, and the story kept out of my porn. This book does that while still showing a genuine connection and chemistry between our two main characters. The pacing is also rather well done, once we get through the first act. Once this book gets rolling, it ends up almost episodic. We have these compact scenes with comfortable opening and closing points that would be well-suited for a comic book or TV show. It helps lend to the scope of the story. It feels big, and that's a good thing in this case.
I mean, alright, it could use some editing. You could probably pull about 20 pages out of this book and it'd be better off for it. At times it's subtle and clever, and once it left me with a genuine "oooooh WHHAAAATT!" kind of moment where I put something together, and felt involved as a reader. However, a lot of the time, the book is guilty of over-explaining things. As a reader you've known what was going on for a page and a half, yet you have to wade through 6 paragraphs paraphrasing the obvious to move on with the story. Also, every character in this book seems to speak with the same voice. Like, they all have pretty much the same mannerisms, and the same cadence to how their dialogue is written. We have characters from across the country. I was hoping for a little more variation. Maybe a dialect or something. The best I got was the guy from Texas saying "Ma" once.
My complaints are far outweighed by the amount of heart that this story has. I would recommend that everyone give it a shot. It has a bit of a slow start, but after the first few chapters, I was more than hooked. It's actually hard for me to explain why I got so into this thing. I'm such a jaded, hard to please, hipster that I find it hard to get into most things, but hey. Help support quality furry stuff. Be like me. Buy this book.

Rainfurrest News before I leave
Posted 11 years agoThis week will feature one of the biggest shows of my weird "career".
If you are going to be at RF this weekend, my show is on Friday at 7pm in the ballroom.
I also have panels Friday. At 11am in the Horizon/Glacier rooms is my "how to make an indie album" thing where I'll be playing tracks off of the new album, and talking all about the creative process.
Friday at 1pm ALSO in the Horizon/Glacier rooms will be my drum circle/ jam session panel. I'll be leading some musical activities and instruments are provided. No experience needed. Come and hang out. Bring an instrument if you have one. It'll be fun.
I'll also have a dealer's table and stuff, so buy things, say hi? party? dance? It's a con. I'll be tokyo drifting EVERYWHERE.
The show is gonna be friggin great. There will be special guests, looping, comedy, oohs and ahs.
Tell your friends and bring them along and help me make this show a big freaking deal.
Follow me on twitter for live updates at the con.

Transition funding update
Posted 11 years agowww.lookleft.us/album/transition
So week one is over and I can't freaking believe how amazing you guys are.
We hit $600 in a week and that floors me.
The thing that is the MOST ridiculous about this is that it was with only 33 orders.
That means nearly EVERYBODY was throwing $20+ at me with each order. I even had
wirez over here dunk a hundo (hundred dollar bill) into my paypal.
So here's where I'm at with the project.
To get the CDs by September 25th I need to order them... like tomorrow.
I'm waiting on a few more things on the graphics side of the project, namely the art book and finalized disc art, but as soon as I have that I need to pull the trigger.
Now is the time to throw in your support for this project.
If you value my music enough to put a dollar amount on it, go to
www.lookleft.us/album/transition
and order a copy.
Put in an extra $10 or more and I'll write you something like this:

There are a few more details here if you want to learn about this whole crazy thing I'm doing:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6076683/
Help me get closer to that $2000 goal. I will keep this number here updated if you want to check in on our progress.
53 orders $1035.95/$2000

Help "crowd" fund me. Order your copy of Transition today!

There it is.
If you want to help me pay for the printed run of my new album and don't need any more convincing, or if you like my music enough to throw a few dollars at me, you can click that and stop reading.
For everyone else, let me explain.
I'm too scared to do a kickstarter.
I can't handle the possibility of failure on a public and measurable scale like that.
It's not that I don't trust the people that support me, or the quality of the product I put out, it's just...
Look. If I put out a kickstarter or an indiegogo or a fundmydreamsorwatchthemdie.com or whatever, and it doesn't reach its goal? My ego would be GONE, dude. That would be a shadow over the rest of my LIFE and I can't handle that kind of pressure.
After seeing artists on there coming out like "Alright, we just need $40,000 to make our new album because apparently we need to buy a new car to record it in" and seeing them get funded at 200% and 300% of their goal? Phew. If I didnt' reach my $2000 benchmark I'd have to pack up and quit earth.
SO what I AM doing is opening up pre-orders for the new album.
Go here http://lookleft.us/album/transition and put down a little money, and I will use that money to pay to have the CDs made.
It's crowd funding without a central entity or a middle man to go through.
The album is recorded. It's edited. It's ready to go. The artbook is being assembled and everything is set.
What I need help with is paying the overhead of a run of CDs. I need just under $2000 to cover the CDs, the artbooks, and the shipping.
That's 200 preorders at $10 each.
if every one of my watchers threw in $2, I'd be more than covered, so if you can, help me make this happen.
SPECIALS! (like... if you give me extra money)
For every $10 EXTRA you pay for the album (it lets you choose your own price)
I will sing one of your tweets. Like, I will sit down with a guitar and write a super short song to 140 characters you wrote.
If you pay $20 extra I'll do two. $30 extra = 3 and so on.
After I get payment I'll respond with an email asking what you'd like me to sing for you.
If you don't have a twitter, we'll figure something out. An FA shout or something.
SO after all that text. Please order the new CD. It's really good.
Tell everyone you know and make this thing big. This one's for the fandom.

SUPRISE! I'm gonna be at FAU
Posted 11 years agoSo like.... less than a week ago I got a message asking if I would be able to come to FAU. To perform. 2 different shows with songs I haven't performed before. In 8 days. With Matthew Ebel and Foxamoore.
So after changing my pants I agreed and I've been practicing ever since.
Long story short, I'm going to be performing with M. E. and F. A. at FAU.
The schedule doesn't seem to be out yet but be sure to check it when you get there. i'll be part of the GOH concert and the charity concert.
It's not often I get to be on stage with such top notch musicians and I relish every second of it.
There will be cover songs, original songs from me, Fox's songs, and Matt's songs as well!
Come and see the awesome.
OH! And if you want to stay updated, follow me on twitter peppercoyote
SEE YOU SOON NEW JERSEY! YOU OWE ME ONE!
(he knows why)

Posted 11 years agoI don't really write con reports much, but this was worth it. It's also been like.... 2 weeks since the con so you've probably read everything you need to know about the con.
So now that I've given you two very good reasons NOT to read this journal, I present, the Journal.
Alright, I've gone to like... a good dozen cons or so, and one thing made this one special beyond all belief.
There was the Candy Band.
If you haven't heard,
rhubarbthebear and
cosmik are the two most talented musicians in the fandom I've ever met.
They are multi-instrumental masterminds who can friggin jam like you wouldn't believe. Visit their pages for more info. They're infinitely interesting and watchable in everything they do.
I was lucky enough to get asked to join them on stage to try and hobble along while they destroy earth musically. To be more specific, I was the backup guitarist in a band including
foxamoore , Rhubarb, Cosmik,
guitarstitch (who KILLED on electric guitar) and ... CRAP I totally forgot the drummer's name. He's the only one I didn't talk to, but he was SO prepared, and solid.
They also let me do one of my own songs "Two Headed Man" (watch with the link below)
https://www.dropbox.com/sc/cd9m0yqv.....n8FGTe-68ZuiCa
ALSO I got to sing a couple other ones including the Peppermint Twist (featuring some explicit Kage ass action)
https://www.dropbox.com/sc/3qvrlv6m.....2MTL8LWI6fpeia
It's somewhere between a bar band, a furry disaster, and pure FRICKIN MAGIC. What you can't see happening from this angle is Fox tearing it up. you can HEAR him though. Like... my little fingers can't contain how happy this show made me. I got to meet so many cool musicians.
Oh yeah, and I had my own show or whatever. It filled the room and had some of the coolest moments I've ever had on stage at a con.
Thank you so much for everyone that came out to see my show. It brought tears to my eyes.
Well I rambled for a good 10 minutes. I'm so full of happy. I love you guys. *hugs the world*
So now that I've given you two very good reasons NOT to read this journal, I present, the Journal.
Alright, I've gone to like... a good dozen cons or so, and one thing made this one special beyond all belief.
There was the Candy Band.
If you haven't heard,

Megaplex. Make this show a thing to remember.
Posted 11 years agoHey everybody. I have a show coming up at Megaplex this year.
It's on Sunday at 1:30PM, not in the main ballroom, but the CAPRI ballroom.
There's the pertinent information, now a little paragraph trying to convince you not to miss it.
I want to make this show a big deal. I've put a ton of work, rehearsal, and time into this show. I've had a few cons to try things at, tweak things, move things around, and otherwise polish the thing and I wanna share it with you good people.
If you're one of the fantastic people that never seems to miss one of my shows, i'm totally preaching to the choir and a realize that. That's where I need your help.
I need you to bring someone to my show. Tug a friend along. Get them drunk beforehand. Put a bag on their head and tell them it's a surprise.
I need people in the audience. For one thing it makes the show a heck of a lot more fun for EVERYONE and if I draw a lot of people, it impresses the con and encourages them to ask me back next year. It's one thing for me to link somebody to my website and TELL them that I know what I'm doing, but it's another thing entirely for them to walk into a room with 100+ people in it and see all of them enjoying what I do.
I can't do ANYthing without an audience. You guys have stuck by me for the last 5 years and I can't thank you enough. I think we're ready for another step forward, and that step is entirely audience based. Help me make this show as big as it possibly can be by getting as many people there as you can.
TIPS FOR GETTING PEOPLE TO MY SHOW
1. Invite them, gently, a couple of times.
2. People don't plan cons. They float around and see what happens so...
3. Gather your friends ON THE WAY to the show. Something else shiny like... chik-fil-a will distract them if you tell them to meet you somewhere at a time, so just grab em all like "hey we're going to this thing, come with us"
The show's only an hour long. That's shorter than the 3rd TMNT movie, and infinitely better written.
I hope to see every single one of you there, and if you can't make it, help me out by tweeting about it.
I'm peppercoyote on twitter and always like a follow. Don't worry, I'll follow back :3

Album update and goals (Transition)
Posted 11 years agoI need a place to put down some thoughts about the new album. My goals and ambitions with the project.
I have the songs written. There are 14 complete tracks, 3 little interlude things (they're adorable) and 1 collection of song sketches I'm gonna throw on there because... WELL I dunno maybe one or two of you want to hear me mumbling song ideas into my phone.
Transition
That's the name of the thing. It's an album of songs I wrote while trying to transition from student into teacher. Boy into man. College idiot into responsible, productive, adult.
The songs are faster, more up-tempo, and groovier than ever. They are also sadder, deeper, and more painful. It's some of everything, and just as much of a grab bag as usual, but hopefully, with more polish.
Goals
I'm not a rich man. My goal is to have the album, ALONG WITH an art/lyrics book (drawn by Scurrow) out in time for RainFurrest. That means I need EVERYTHING done and paid for before the end of the summer. The publishing costs for the thing will be around $3000 (1k mastering, 2k printing).
I'm going to see what kind of money I can get together before August, but there's a possibility that for the first time, I'm going to ask for your help to fund an album. I don't really want to do kickstarter (they keep some of the money) but at the same time I like the idea. Money up front for rewards later. Transparency in how much money I've received, and where it's being used.
The whole concept scares me. I have no idea how many people are willing to put up 20 or 30 bucks to help me out. WELL LET'S SPIN THAT WHEEL PEOPLE.
Later. We'll spin it later.
If however, you want to contribute to the music that happens on my page, head over to www.lookleft.us and buy something. It's all really good! Except for the first few albums. They kinda suck.

A video with Duke the Shep-herd and myself
Posted 11 years agoSo I got to do a very exciting thing lately.
I worked with the super amazing, multi-talented, multi-lingual, multi-gendered
dancingduke
I put up one of the songs we did together, and since then, we cut a video for the thing.
Rather than making ANOTHER submission and cluttering up everyone's life, I'm just going to put that video here:
I can't even tell you how fun this little recording session was. I hope to do more with this guy as soon as I can.

I'm in Phoenix. NOW WHAT?
Posted 11 years agoI don't know anyone here! Help!
Do you live in Phoenix? If so, I wanna hang out.
Show me the city. Watch TV near me. Show me youtube videos. I don't really care.
It's lonely in the desert and I wanna say hello.

Rainfurrest GoH selection (and Megaplex news)
Posted 11 years agoLike... Jesus I don't even know what to say here.
I got picked to be the musical guest at Rainfurrest 2014.
This is crazy exciting and I'll leave it at that.
I get to do a show, I get to run a couple of panels (tentatively, "How do I looper?" and "Karaoke Boot Camp")
and I get to be a part of some kind of furry super-group including foxamore.
This will be my first time on the West coast, and heck I'm only putting this up this early so that people reading this ON the West coast might come out and say hi! *deep breath*.
The OTHER con on my horizon at the moment is Megaplex.
I was invited to do a show there by my new musical friends Cosmik and Rhubarb and how could I say no?
I hope you guys come out and say hello. I'll have a dealer's table there as well. More specifics as soon as I have them.

MCFC Meme
Posted 11 years agoWhere are you staying?
Main Hotel
What day are you getting there?
Thursday, Early Afternoon
How are you traveling?
Helicopter
Who will you be rooming with?
A football
How is the best way to find you and what do you look like?
I'm huge, with red hair. Approach from the front.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
Yeah! The Dreamkeepers one. I really like that comic
Will you be suiting?
I prefer the term imagineering
Do you do free art?
Yeah. I put on a free show at nearly every con I'm at.
Do you do trades?
POGs only
Do you do badges?
That would lead to paper cuts
What is your gender?
Vitamin C
How tall are you?
10
THOUSAND inches
Can I talk to you?
I don't know, CAN you? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Can I touch you?
I don't know, CRAN YOU!? AH! STILL FUNNY
Can I visit your room?
*pulsates on the floor* I DON'T KNOW! CAAAAAN YOU!?!?
Can I buy you drinks?
*bleeds out of my ears*
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
Not if Mr. Clean has anything to say about it.
Are you nice?
In short bursts!
How long are you going?
All night, baby.
Do you have an artist table?
I couldn't get one! It genuinely makes me a little sad that I missed out on getting a table.
Will you be going to parties?
Yeah. It's a con that gives out fried chicken. The whole hotel is a party.
Will you be performing?
Actually *deep breath* At 4:30 Saturday afternoon I will be performing a musical show where I will sing, dance, play guitar, beatbox, play the recorder, dance some more, make dubstep wubs, and maybe strike a pose. I would really appreciate it if you came out because if you don't, who will? I'm really proud of this show and I want the chance to share it with you. I will also be DJing Saturday night at 10:30. Unts unts.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Just introduce yourself and say hi. I want to meet everyone there. That's why we go to these things.
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
I'll either be eating, suiting, or on stage. Literally my 3 favorite things.
What/where will you be eating?
The mothaflankin' sponsor lounge. This is the best place ever to be a sponsor so be like me and fork out the extra bucks. Totally worth it.
Actually don't. That will just make the line between me and my fried cheese even longer. MY cheese.
Can I take your picture?
It might steal my sole! Then I'll need a new shoe.
What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
Put on a good show and maybe sell enough CDs to pay for my hotel room.
IN REVIEW:
Live music show where I sing and stuff (looper show) is Saturday at 4:30 pm in Main Events.

DIFFERENT SHOW (March 2nd in Pittsburgh)
Posted 11 years agoMan if I keep up my work ethic, there might be even MORE of these show journals.
I'm doing another show at "Club Cafe" Just off of E Carson St
56 S 12th St, Pittsburgh, PA 15203
Doors open at 7pm, I'm on at 8pm.
Get tickets from ME if you wanna go (that way they know I got people to the show)
There will be 3 bands that night. I'm the first opener, then Paul Luc, then the headlining act: Water Liars.
If enough people come and freak out when I play, I might get... I dunno a hearty pat on the back?
Come see me do my one man Schtick. It actually kinda works somehow!

SHOW Downtown Pittsburgh Thrusday Feb 6th
Posted 11 years agoOn Thursday Feb 6th at 11pm I'll be playing at "There Ultralounge" located at 931 Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
It's just a few doors down from Furnando's. It's a very friendly bar that actually loves it when people show up in fursuit.
There are no tickets to buy or anything but you must be 21+ since this is a bar and rules are rules kids.
I'll be at the bar by 10pm and will be hanging around until all night.
The musical portion of the night will last about an hour and a half and will consist of me singing, playing guitar, beatboxing, mumbling bass lines, and various other bits of silliness. It's a one man show, but not a one man sound if that makes sense.
Come out, drink some drinks, wear your suit if you want to.
Questions?

One man show -or- wanna help me get a thing?
Posted 11 years agoI've graduated college and my band is scattered across the country.
Well that's not entirely true. I'm scattering myself to Arizona in just a few months, and it's really expensive to get 4 people to a convention.
I figured my little musical stint in the fandom was over, or at least the LIVE performances were, but then I saw Reggie Watts perform.
I'd known loopers existed for a while, but it never occured to me that I might be able to use one to come up with a satisfying solo musical act.
I've booked 2 cons so far and I'm looking to get into MCFC as well.
I bought a bunch of stuff and now I'm practicing. It's going pretty well but I'm missing one thing; an octave pedal.
I need BASS in my mix, and I've figured out that I can sing bass lines through an octave dropper. It sounds pretty neat.
This is what I need to complete my rig:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MicroPog/
If you want to help me, go to lookleft.us and pick something up.
I feel weird taking donations. I'm not a charity, but I DO have a store, so hey. Shop a bit.
If you order a physical copy of "Waiting" I will include a special gift of... some kind <_< with your package.
