The Star Trek teleporter problem.
Posted a year agoI'm sure we're all familiar with the Star Trek teleporters by now. They scan you, turn you into energy, beam that energy somewhere else, then rebuild that energy into you.
I'm pretty sure we're all also familiar with the arguments that the teleported person is no longer "you". It's a copy of you, and the original has been destroyed.
Is that right, though? One of the main points in the argument is that you're turned into energy, so you must be dead. But consider fantasy for a moment, and look at people being turned to stone. Be it by curse or the gaze of some monster, people can be turned to stone. Later, magic (or sometimes slaying the monster) can change them back to flesh and blood. Nobody questions that it's still "them", because what they got turned into is easy to see and track. But if you turned someone to stone, shipped the stone form across the country, then changed them back? That's a crappy teleport, but it's still basically how the Star Trek teleporters work. Right? The stone form isn't alive or dead, it's in stasis because stone doesn't live or die. The same holds true for energy. You're not "torn apart" when you're converted, you're just converted back and forth.
The other problem is that the teleporters in Star Trek have been known to copy people. The implications of that are creepy, but again I don't think that means that the person dies during transit. Being able to make a clone of someone doesn't actually affect the original, no matter if it's done by cloning or powerful magic that just wishes them into existence. The Star Trek teleporters can make a copy by scanning in the original while transporting them, then using that information to shape more energy into the correct patterns. Someone turned into stone could be copied, though, with a new one carved from matching stone, then turned to flesh with magic. Creepy, but with the right magic, totally acceptable without "killing" the original.
Anyway, that's just a thought that's been bugging me lately. It's late, and I should be getting to sleep a few hours ago.

Valor, Mystic, or Instinct?

CoH news: Good and bad
Posted 12 years agoThis may not be of any interest to those of my watchers that did not play City of Heroes, but for those that did...
The Good: Check these people out ( http://valiance.shogn.net/ ) and give them some love. They're making decent progress in making a game inspired by the spirit of City of Heroes.
The Bad: Many City players will remember hearing of Ascendant (with an 'A', D A N T). While a nice player all around, he became famous for his one sided phone conversations he'd have while standing in the train stations. They were so funny and popular that the game devs eventually put him into the game canon. Sadly, Ascendant's player passed away recently. Having interacted with him a few times, I can only say that any game that replaces City of Heroes will be a bit less awesome because he won't be there. http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.....msg121568.html

What's the line on Rule 34?
Posted 12 years agoSimple question: Where do you draw the line on what is and isn't acceptable in the furry fandom for Rule 34?
And a more complex question: Why is that the line?
I know that someone's personal character is NOT open to Rule 34 use (without their permission). Something like the characters from the Lion King are often used for Rule 34, and nobody bats an eye. So, somewhere between those two sides is the line between acceptable and not acceptable.
Is it that the character was used to make money? Some artists have comics they produce for money, and many artists have put their own characters into commissions for money, but I don't think many of us would think it would be acceptable to use their characters without permission.
Is it that the character was made by a corporation, such as Disney? There's still people pouring a lot of time, effort, and emotion into bringing some of these characters to life, even if it is Disney signing the paychecks at the end of the day. What happens to their desire to put forth the effort next time when they see their previous efforts misused? If one of the artists here was offered a chance to have their stories turned into a motion picture, would they be forced to decide between fame and wealth versus seeing their ideas warped and debased by their fellows here?
Note please, that I'm not saying I want to see an end to Rule 34. I just want to see what people think about where the lines on acceptable/unacceptable are drawn, and why.

Farewell, City of Heroes. (Or can we save it?)

And then, go here:

This game has been a large part of my life for the past 8 years. I've made lots of friends there, and had tons of great RP. And yes, I've had quite a few "furry" characters there, too.
Little Mousie, Graceful Serval, Hurii, Grahm Ashland, Stalking, Timid, Poison Love...
Maybe it's silly to be upset by this, but I'm upset anyway. There's friendships and RP there that just won't be the same without it. Storylines that will never be finished. Characters I'll never get to interact with again. And friends that, no matter how hard we try to keep in touch, will go their own way while I go mine, and we'll lose each other.
There's more to say, but... yeah. This hurts.

Valentine's Day
Posted 13 years agoWhen I woke up this morning, my cat was on my bed and let me know just how much she loves me. Then I gave her a special most cat food as a treat. Now that she's full, she's in love with a sunbeam, and wants nothing to do with me.
Oddly, I find that waking up with anyone in your bed and offering them a Valentine's Day breakfast of canned cat food almost always has the effect of them not wanting anything to do with you. There's a moral to this story, but I'm not sure it's a good one.
Happy Valentine's Day.

So, a guy walks into a mall...
Posted 16 years agoI live within walking distance of our local mall. Tuesday, I decided to walk down, get some lunch, and buy a few things before walking home. It looked like it was going to rain, so I took an umbrella with me.
Then, this happened: http://www.ketv.com/news/19442622/detail.html
Needless to say, my new umbrella is NOT solid black.

Fursona Meme

TheMaskedLion
Just to clarify before I begin, my "Fursona" (or as close to one as I have) is not something many have seen or heard about. But I have it worked out in my head.
Name: Palador
Race: Dragon (non-anthro). One alternate form (anthro feline)
1 – Do you and your "fursona" look alike?
No. The anthro form is based on what I thought I'd grow up to look like/be built like when I was young. Nature, being the cruel bitch that it is, had other plans.
2 – Do you and your "fursona" share attires?
No. The dragon form doesn't wear anything, which would be a bad idea for me. The anthro form wears mostly hooded robes, usually tattered and old ones. Hand and foot wraps optional.
3 – Do you share the same sexuality as your fursona?
Yes. We both think about it from time to time, and we both don't get any. :p
I think I think about it more than he does, though.
4 – If you hadn’t already made your fursona look like you, if you would to change how he/she looked like to make him/her look more like you, how would you think he/she would look like?
In both forms, Palador is skinny. Too skinny. No matter how much he eats (and he can eat alot), he's skinny. (I was like that as a kid.) If he was to look more like me, he'd have to be somewhat overweight.
5 – Did you work hard to develop your fursona? What is the (brief) history of your fursona?
The base idea came from a UBU (You Be You: You play a character based off of yourself) DnD game I was in. Through some bizzare rules abuse, I managed to re-incarnate my dying character into an egg, which hatched into one of the small dragon-like creatures the GM had in her world. He had my base personality, but not my memories to back them up. It was interesting to play, and made me crawl around inside my own head quite a bit as I/he kept asking "Why am I doing this?"
The game ended, but the character idea stuck with me. Over time, I've made some big changes to him, shifted his attitudes a bit and his appearance a lot. The feline form started as a nod to something else from that DnD game, but it made the character more functional in more situations.
I can't say it was a lot of work, most of it "just happened". There was some work, though. Some thought and planning to get it to a point that I like.
6 – Do you and your fursona share relationship status?
See question 3.
7 – Do you find yourself jealous or upset if you get paired with someone you don’t like or your partner does?
If I don't like someone, I won't enjoy being paired up with them. Ditto goes for my fursona. Palador's supposed to represent me somewhat, after all.
8 – How would you like your character not to be used?
Anyway at all, really. He's not really a sexual character, so just about any sexual situation would be out of character for him, unless it's someone hitting on him and him recoiling.
As for "used" in a non-sexual way? He spends most of his time being far too solitary and grumpy for his own good, so anything too happy or outgoing would be a bad match. Anything showing him to be unusually cruel would also be bad.
9 – What’s your fursona’s specialty?
Healing. His breath "weapon" heals, and prolonged contact with him causes regeneration. He's also older than dirt, his body maintained by his healing powers.
In anthro form, his healing power fades quite a bit, but his psychic abilites grow. If he needs to use what telekinesis he has, or talk to someone more than a couple of towns away, he needs to be in this form. His specialty in this form is a sort of psychic "conference call", where he links several people through his mind so they can all talk to each other. He's not very good at mentally attacking, though.
10 – At a score of 1-10 how much are you and your fursona alike?
Mentally: 7/10 I think I'm getting more like him as I get older.
Physically: Dragon: -50/10 He's a dragon, and when he curls up he's the size of a large SUV. Nothing similar there at all.
Feline anthro: 3/10 He's tall and very thin. I'm about average for height, and I need to find a diet I can stick with.
And I tag... whoever wants to do this. I hate tagging people with stuff like this.

Just to clarify before I begin, my "Fursona" (or as close to one as I have) is not something many have seen or heard about. But I have it worked out in my head.

Submissions Question
Posted 16 years agoOkay, here's a small question, or rather a few related questions.
I've had 4 sketches done, and I have the artist's permission to post them on my page. I know how to do that (I think). My question is, what else do I do, and how do I do it.
Do I change the file name, or leave it as it is?
How do I do the little icon thing, so that it shows the icon and name of whoever did the artwork?
Anything else I should do or say?

Religion and MMOs
Posted 16 years agoI've been thinking about two things lately. Seperate issues, but I'll bring them both up here.
First, is about religion. Everyone in the fur fandom knows about Anubis, and more than likely most of them know several of the other Ancient Egyptian gods, too. They're good for the Furry crowd.
But what about other religions? Who do they offer us?
My current icon is an old picture of Saint Christopher, of the Catholic faith. Yes, that's a dog's head on him, and yes that's how that portrat was really made. Translation errors turned an insult for barbarians into him being thought of as having the head of a dog. He's also described as unusually strong, large, and perhaps may have eaten people before his conversion. One book I read suggested him as "The Patron Saint of Werewolves". I liked that. And yet, when's the last time you saw someone draw the guy?
I know there are some other religions out there with animalistic deities and spirits in them. More than I can recall, I'm sure. Are there any someone else cares to mention?
******************
Now, let's talk about MMOs. I know that the Fur crowd is said to mostly hang out in Second Life when it comes to such things, but I'm looking for MMOs that are more game, and less sand(litter?)box.
Someone told me the other day that EQ2 was "Very good" to Furries. Cat people, rat people, Iksar, and even a magic item or two to make you look like a Gnoll. Not bad.
I know alot of people play WoW. But there's really only one good race there as far as anthros go, right? Is that enough?
Myself, I play City of Heroes/City of Villains. I happen to know of some furs that play there, mostly on the Virtue server (The unofficial RP server for CoH/V). Lions, tigers, bears, cheetahs, werewolves, dragons, pigs, rats, and even the occasional giant chicken; I've seen them all on there. And yet, I get the feeling that this game is off of most fur's radar when it comes to MMOs. Sure, it's not perfect, and some of the more interesting costumes take alot of work and you don't want to look at them too close, but it still strikes me as odd that I hear so little about this game.
So my question is: What MMOs do other furs play, and why?

Okay, that's it. Sleepy time now.

VG Meme
Posted 16 years agoI was indirectly tagged for this. I might as well do it, though.
1) What was your FIRST video game console?
It was one of the consoles with a couple of paddles on it, that only played three variations of Pong. The Atari 2600 came later.
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
Pong. More Pong. Single player Pong.
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
Right now? Two. PS2 and Gamecube.
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
I liked it, but wasn't nuts for it. Used mostly Chun-Li.
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with great character design?
They're not bad, but not outstanding.
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
I'd ask them to wash their hands first. I don't like replacing controllers. Nor do I want to find my cat licking my controllers once we're done playing.
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG? I will allow a second and third fave if you insist.
Chrono Trigger. Breath of Fire 3. Castlevania: SotN. But several Final Fantasy games were in close running for this.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
Depends on the game, but if it's a 3D version of a 2D game, I usually hate it.
9) Are you an SNK fan?
Nope.
9) Are you good at DDR?
Not at all. Only tried it once.
10) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
Everyone. Why isn't there furry art of that dog or an anthro version of that dog getting the treatment it deserves?
11) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
No. A few unimportant events maybe, but nothing important. At least, not important to me.
12) Do you listen to video game music?
Yes. Alot, in fact.
13) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
Nope.
14) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
Any kid can kick my ass on those, usually. Not only do I tend to suck against a human opponent, but I feel bad if I beat a kid, so I don't try as hard.
15) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
Final Fantasy 7. Most of the other games I can think of have had remakes and such done, so I might have to let it go at one.
16) Mario or Sonic?
Mario.
17) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
Nope. Most of the time, the game and movie have little to do with each other, so enjoying one doesn't mean I'll enjoy the other.
18) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
Sports.
19) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
American McGee's (sp?) Alice. It was here, it was big news for a bit, then everyone forgot about it. And while I suck at FPS games and could never finish it, I have to wonder why nobody took the ideas there and ran with them.
20) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
Only a little. It's far more common for me to just express frustration in general without aiming it at the game itself.
21) Do you own any VG apparel?
Nope.
22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
I think I'm glad I've never seen it, just short clips.
23) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
Sad and bad, but in a funny way.
24) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
I can't recall any of them, off the top of my head.
25) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
Very very rarely. My "old-school" is usually older than theirs.
26) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
Nope. Not many I'd lend my games to, and they know how to care for them. The one time there was a problem, they replaced the game.
27) Do you own any imported games?
Nope.
28) Are you ready for this meme to be over, or could you keep going?
I have no life, it can keep going.
29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where? This can be simple or elaborate.
A small, 1-up mushroom on my ass, I think.
30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
After I beat a game? No, not really, though I found the ending of Secret of Mana to be sad. But I'm usually in a good mood at the end of a game. Now, I did cry during FF7. And no, not when Aeris died. I cried at the scene where Red XIII finds out the truth about his father. And then, the stone remains of his father start to cry, and all Red can do is howl in sorrow. That still gets to me.
Tagging nobody wiith this, as that stuff can kind of annoy me.

Fursona: Round 2
Posted 17 years agoSo, I've decided that if I have a fursona, it would be a mouse. I'm still not sure where the line between fursona and character is, but I can say that the character I thought up was very inspired my myself and my attitudes.
I'll admit to toning down some flaws of mine in him, or writing them totally out. But I played up a couple of others and some quirks, so it all works out. Right?
Anyway... It's a mouse. Looking at alot of the other characters I see out there, I decided to make him actually mouse sized. He's all of 4 inches tall. I thought it would make for an interesting change of pace where most of the characters seem to be on the large side. He's not buff, he has no mighty spells or weapons. I tried to make sure that even the outstanding things about him are very not-outstanding (like his size).
Except for the fact that he's toxic. Do not ingest unless you like projectile vomiting. Alot. Playing around is okay, but I don't want anyone eating my character. Heh.
I'm going to see if I can't get at least one drawing of him done by someone.

Fursona vs Character
Posted 17 years agoWelcome to the journal nobody reads. Why should they, after all?
Anyway... I've been thinking of what kind of "Fursona" I would have. And what I've come up with to represent myself isn't me at all. It's more of a character that I can roleplay, should I wish to have something to use as a voice.
But is that what a Fursona is? Do people say that their Fursona is them in fur, or is it just a character that they too use as a voice when they need one? What I've seen confuses me, it appears as if different people will give different answers.
I have no desire to use a Fursona that isn't me, and have people think that I'm just like that character. Or have them get upset when I point out that knowing that character isn't the same as knowing me. Maybe "Fursona" isn't the right word for this, but what would I call such a character then?
Maybe I should just refer to it as my Stand-In character, or something similar. Any of you chirping crickets out there have any suggestions?
