Furries and Bronies
Posted 13 years agoI find it amusing how, in the real world beyond the Internet, people are more confused/horrified by the idea that I watch and enjoy MLP than the fact I'm a member of the furry fandom. So yes, fapping to yiff and being a member of a fandom universally known for its incessant whiny drama is more socially acceptable than watching a harmless kid's show.
Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai
Posted 13 years agoGah, why is this game so damned addictive? Though I have to question Creative Assembly's decision to have all of the Japanese units speak in hammy Engrish accents straight out of a 1930s Yellow Peril film.
Anyway, just wanted to get the last journal off the front page because it sucked.

April Fools and stuff
Posted 13 years agoWAAAAAA, leaving FA FOREVER!
Ahem, yes, every bloody year we get inundated with countless April Fool joke journals saying they're leaving the Internet forever. So high marks for originality then. ...come to think of it, isn't making a journal to complain about it just as annoying?
Anyway, on happier news, I finally have a job again doing admin work at a school and it's my birthday on the 13th, yay.

Modern Warfare 3: Thoughts
Posted 14 years agoWell, I completed this game in less than a week; it's not exactly long and unless you're very desperate to know what happened after the last game I can't think of a reason to buy this.
Anyway, I think there's a big missed opportunity for something awesome in this game. Now, be warned there's a few spoilers, but then again who really plays a Call of Duty game for the plot these days? Basically, the Russians invade Europe and there's a significant section that takes place in Berlin. Now, two of the previous games in the series also took place in Berlin playing as the Soviets seizing the Reichstag from the Germans. Just an idea here, but wouldn't it have been awesome if there was a segment where you played as soldier of the Bundeswehr re-taking the Bundestag (the new name for the Reichstag) from the invading Russians? Just seems like a massive missed opportunity to hark back to the origins of the CoD games.

Review of Space Marine (A proper one this time)
Posted 14 years agoAlright, I'd better start of by saying that I am a huge Warhammer 40,000 fanboy; I will relentlessly squee over nearly everything Games Workshop crams down my throat. I just wanted to get that out so you know I'm likely to be biased.
I'll try to evaluate the game without delving into fanboy-ism first, and then move onto how it measures up against the source material.
It seems that fears that this game would be another Gears of War clone are largely unfounded. Yes there is plenty of third-person over-the-shoulder shooting, but the focus is primarily in brutal close combat. There is nothing better than seeing your blue coloured protagonist leaping gracefully about the battlefield slaughtering gleefully with a big chainsaw. The combat is fast and visceral and thoroughly entertaining, and requires more thought than just mashing buttons; the Orks assault in large waves and the trick is in prioritising the deadlier elements of the mob, timing the health-regenerating execution moves, and being peppered at by long range weapons. Chaos Marines are less fun, however, as traitor guardsmen are more content to whittle away your shield and health from a distance and Chaos Marines require quite a bit of tedious softening up. All in all though the gameplay is entertaining enough to keep you hooked.
There is a big problem though, and it comes about when the Chaos Marines start to enter into the game. The designers wanted players to avoid using cover, and so they should; a Space Marine is encased in nearly impenetrable power armour, in the tabletop game their armour save is better than (most) cover saves (basically meaning hiding behind their armour is more effective than hiding behind a brick wall). For the most part they succeeded; there is only one way to regain health in this game and it is to use the wonderfully violent execution moves in close combat. However, for much of the last act I found it safe to hide behind a nice piece of indestructible scenery and occasionally pop out to take pot shots at the enemy. Of course, it might just be that I suck.
As for the environments, they are a little dull and grey at times, though to be fair the setting is a planet-wide factory that produces skyscraper sized mechs so we can't really expect flowers and sunshine. Still, it doesn't lapse into the monotone prevalent in many shooters and action games today; the main character is bright blue and pimped out with enough gold to buy France for starters. Despite the greyness of the surroundings they are still impressive, giving a strong sense of the sheer scale evoked in Warhammer 40,000.
Speaking of Warhammer 40,000; the game exudes the look and feel of the setting perfectly. Indeed playing it looks like the evocative artwork found in rulebooks and codices come to life. Granted there are minor flaws in its adherence to the background fluff (Khorne sorcerers, tsk), but it's certainly not on the level of Soulstorm. I feared that the fact that it featured the Smurfmarines would count against it, but it doesn't; these are not the Mary Sues featured in the glorified fanfic that is the current Space Marine Codex, but rather the Ultramarines here are a damn sight more fleshed out than what we have come to expect.
In conclusion, it's a very good game and should be readily accessible to those unfamiliar with the source material. At times it can get a little repetitive and the final boss battle is just an extended button mashing quick time event, but I think the brutal and rewarding combat system, and more personally the good adherence to the source material, more than makes up for the flaws.
Oh, and I haven't touched the multiplayer because my internet connection doesn't seem to like it much.

The Banner: A call for sanity.
Posted 14 years agoWhat the hell is wrong with everyone? It's just a banner, you see it and then you move on. The ability of some people to take the most pointless and inconsequential thing and take it so far out of proportion that the UN may have to get involved never ceases to amaze me. I mean really, if we bitch about banners so much maybe we just shouldn't have one.
Of course I realise this post will make no difference; furries will bitch and drama will still propogate, but at least I can sit here and imagine that my opinion has value!

Xenoblade Chronicles
Posted 14 years agoWell, I'm a day late but I've finally got this game. I've played through the first hour or so and here's my initial impressions of the game.
It is good, really good. For starters it's probably the most visually impressive game on the Wii I've seen thus far, granted it's not super hi-def next generation but it's undeniably pretty to see the vast expansive countryside. The combat is engaging, it's a little confusing at first but you eventually get the hang of it after a while. The story looks intriguing, though I've only seen a tiny proportion of it, and so far there aren't any characters that irritate me yet which is unique for a JRPG. The visual style is fundamentally Japanese, with the bright colours and ridiculous outfits everybody wears but at least their hairstyle is plausible.
So yes, I would recommend this game. It should appeal to both Western RPG fans and JRPG fans alike as it mixes gameplay and visual elements from both.
Oh and 'the Monado' is the most ridiculous name for a sword I've ever heard, it sounds like an exotic fruit the middle classes eat.

Family Holiday and Possible Commissions
Posted 14 years agoWell, I'm with my family on holiday in Portugal now, seven days stuck here in a foreign country and being British we don't know the language and will communicate by speaking English loudly and slowly while gesturing wildly at the bewildered locals. Should be alright, the flight was suitably boring and terrifying at the same time, but I did derive amusement by looking out of the window and seeing what the view would be like from my favourite macro sizes (1,000ft - several miles).
Homesickness is a bit of an issue though, but I'll get over it.
On a different, I'm thinking of taking commissions now for stories and pictures, I haven't decided on the prices yet but I'm thinking about $4 for a sketch and $8 for a coloured pic, and $6 for a story. The reason for these low prices is that I'm not particular good or well known yet.

Status update
Posted 14 years agoWell, I've got my final marks, meaning I am now in possession of an upper second honours degree in History and Politics. I have graduation next month where I collect the little bit of paper that says I'm a clever boy.
Also been looking for a job, which is why I haven't uploaded anything for a while. Annoyingly the graduate market is very difficult to get into, with few companies offering positions and a large number of graduates looking for these roles. But hopefully I'll get something soon.

Pokemon Black
Posted 14 years agoSo I finally got around to getting this game, and after an hour I've noticed something a little unsettling.
Team Plasma's logo is the Chi Rho symbol.
TEAM PLASMA IS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
Other than that it's pretty decent so far, the presentation and animation is okay. But I'm still prefer the oldschool Pokemon games, maybe that's just nostalgia but there's a simple purity about a game simply about a 10 year old kid given deadly animals and sent off alone in the world to take on a vast criminal organisation and become the bestest trainer ever. Or something...

Exams and stuff
Posted 14 years agoWell, it's that time of year again and I have exams looming up. The end of my university career is at hand and soon I shall hopefully be stepping into my first job, but before that comes the all important final exams. I will be studying a lot particularly in the mornings after I wake up, and while I'm perfectly happy to idly chat with people I'm afraid I really can't do any RPs or anything particularly in-depth. See, my mind will be filled with facts about the Fall of the Roman Republic, Medieval tombs and Political Science that all the yiff and fun stuff has to be crammed into a tiny little corner of my brain where it won't be free until I've finished these exams. So please respect that, but it doesn't mean you can't talk to me *at all*. I'm more than happy to just chat, just keep in mind I'm going to be distracted a lot.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Posted 14 years agoAlright, new decade here, one more year until the world ends if idiots are to be believed. I'm back home now and thus have about eight days of yiff to catch up on.
Merry Christmas
Posted 14 years agoI know this is a tad early but I'm going away on Friday to my grandparents until New Years Day with no internet (how will I ever survive?), so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hope you all have a good one.
More rants
Posted 14 years agoSo, once again our government is attempting to limit free access to the Internet, this time by proposals to block 'explicit' websites. Their justification? The age-old excuse of 'protecting children'. Here, culture minister Ed Vaizey is proposing to allow ISPs to block all pornography ever reaching our computers, and allowing an opt-in system to access such content. I fear that FurAffinity and macrophilia sites such as BigFurs (of which I am a constant regular) will come under this umbrella of pornography that shall be blocked.
Now, I'm sorry, but this seems to me to be a collossal waste of time. First, attempts to censor the Internet have always resulted in utter failure; websites will always sneak through the censors and hackers will always exploit loopholes. This is the same method they already use for dealing with child porn and guess what? Surprise! Child porn is still there, it hasn't removed the problem. Second, their justification of protecting the nation's youth is frankly stupid. The Internet is the new rock'n'roll, corrupting our children just like heavy metal and video games. This just seems to be a massive cover-up for what is essentially just poor parenting; if your kids are looking at pornography on the Internet you have only yourselves to blame. There are many parental control services available, or parents can simply supervise their children as they surf the Internet, or indeed just restrict their access altogether. Educating parents on how to effectively deal with the dangers of the Internet will be a damn sight more effective and less harmful that simply applying a sledgehammer to the problem.
It is utter arse of the highest order to do this. Yes kids accidently viewing boobies is bad, but you cannot blame the boobies for it and instead mature adults who wish to view said boobies are being unfairly punished for the poor parenting of others. This reeks of the nanny state, a nanny state which I remember the Conservatives had promised to remove. I can only hope they come to their senses, or the EU does something right for a change and blocks this on the grounds of freedom of speech.
