Updates: AC
Posted 2 months agoHello all!
It is unfortunately easy to let consistent posting on this site slip by...I hope to post more reliably in the future.
I will be present at Anthrocon 2025. I will have new work for sale in the AC art show; a preview will be posted before I leave for Pittsburgh.
I have work in this show being held in Pittsburgh: https://room-party.com/ It is open now and will be open throughout AC, including some special events. My work in the show is a free, unlimited edition Riso print. Stop by and pick one up, and check out the amazing work collected by the talented curators.
I wish you all health and strength! Soigne ta droite!

Posted 2 years agoWill anyone be attending? Just curious.
I'm happy to be here
Posted 2 years agoIn retrospect, it is obvious that the constancy of a gallery site proved to be healthier than the frequently changing social media experiments which initially displaced it.
FA is like a house gallery show with extended friends. Contemporary social media was an anarchic mall, a mutating, endless sideshow that demanded constant engagement to stay visible, and I participated happily, for the most part. Even when it became evident that engagement methods emulated the old approach that sensational newspapers and magazines used- "sustained alarm" was the term, I think? But it seems the insane demand of endlessly growing profit wrings usability from that model of platform, to their eventual detriment.
It has been nine years since my last journal. I've posted sporadically, but I aim to share more works here. And I sincerely hope to offer more concrete records of my output, on paper, within the next year. To borrow an engagement plea from older media: Stay tuned.

Weasyl
Posted 11 years agoHello everyone,
I'm going to try to use Weasyl as my primary means of sharing imagery from now on. I'll likely still comment and post things here for a while, but Weasyl will be the main furry-specific website for me.
https://www.weasyl.com/~redacteur
I also post drawings and such on my Tumblr account: outsidewolves.tumblr.com

Furlandia!
Posted 12 years agoDue to an unexpected trip out west, I'll be able to swing by Furlandia in Portland, Oregon for Friday evening and Saturday. It's Portland's first fur con, my first "small" con, and the closest I've brought my furrydom to my former home state. Will I see some of you there? Will I see some old Portland friends there unexpectedly? We'll find out soon enough.
Travel safe and see you soon!

Special stream of F19 Stealth Fighter + Drawing stream later
Posted 13 years agoI'm not much of a gamer, but one of my favorite games since middle school has been F19 Stealth Fighter, a combat/flight simulation game from 1988 which speculated the capabilities of the then-unnamed and top secret US combat aircraft. I've yet to find someone else who played that game, and if you're into chunky 3D graphics, cold war politics, and the thrill of flying 200 feet over East Berlin, look no further! If you wish, join me at 10 EST at www.livestream.com/redacteurstream . There will be no further announcement about this particular stream.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F19_Stealth_Fighter
Later on, I'll hold the usual drawing stream at 12 EST/ -5 GMT at the same location, and the usual media barrage will precede that emission.

AC overview
Posted 13 years agoAC was amazing; I had a wonderful time and I already miss all of you dearly. Clup and I met up before the con began and walked into the lobby of the Westin on Thursday, where we found ourselves suddenly hug-pounced by the members of our shared suite and other friends from cons past. From that point forward, the con was a blur of dancing, swimming, fur, saunas, hugging, good food and drink, sletchbook-swapping, and many deep and meaningful conversations with friends old and new.
I don't where to begin with the specifics of the AC experience, and it would be a bit redundant compared to the journals of my roommates, so I'll leave it to the drawings I'll make regarding AC. And yes, this year I'll hold myself to the promise of actually making such a drawing.
Special thanks to GoldenBoiBlaze and Artdecade for gathering us all together into the coolest suite of people. I'm going to try my best to attend MFF this year. Until then, don't be afraid to keep in touch, con friends!

Never flown into Pittsburgh before? Also: Microns and flying
Posted 13 years agoThis is a partial reblog from last year: In my conversations with people about AC, more than a few have expressed dismay at the expensive cab fare from the airport to the con hotel area. If you don't know already, there is a dedicated airport to downtown express bus operated by Pittsburgh's city bus authority. It costs $3.25 each way, and runs every 30 minutes during the week. It's the only city bus that services the airport, so there is no confusion about which one to take. You'll know when you've reached downtown; the bus exits a tunnel and you're hit with a spectacular view of Pittsburgh. Get off at or right before Seventh Avenue & Smithfield (the bus starts to leave downtown at that point,) then walk northeast up Liberty and to the hotel and convention center area. When you see people with tails and fuzzy ear hats everywhere, you'll know you're going the right direction.
Link to the schedule PDF: http://www.portauthority.org/rt/28x.pdf
This might not be possible if you've got three "action packers" filled with your fursuits/snacks/whatnot, but you can take the usual suitcase and carry-on aboard the bus, no problem! Save the $30 cab fare to spend on comics instead.
Additionally, I've recently learned that you mustn't open Micron pens when flying in an airliner. I knew that Rapidograph technical drawing pens can't be opened, but Micron pens will also burst and leak if opened. EDIT: KTurtle left a kind comment below on how to avoid such a mistake: "The trick is to point the pen upwards when opening it, so that the ground-level-pressure air inside the pen can escape without taking the ink with it.
In fact, I've found it's a good idea to open pens point upward even after arriving at your destination, in case the barometric pressure is different enough from your hometown." Thanks, KTurtle!

AC questionnaire
Posted 13 years agoThis is largely directed toward people who haven't met me (see last question.)
How do you want to be addressed?
"Redacteur" is good for getting my attention (it's pronounced just like the English "redactor;" I almost chose that name but it looked too much like "Red Actor.")
Gender?
Male
Age?
29
What do you look like?
Tall bearded Caucasian man wearing a blue pilot's shirt
Where/how can I find you?
I'll be wandering around with my badge on.
How are you getting there?
Bearplane
What hotel are you staying at?
Westin
Which days will you be attending?
Thursday through Sunday, possibly Monday.
Do you do requests?
I'll gladly swap sketchbooks for a cross-doodle session.
Do you do trades?
Aside from the sketchbooks, no trades, thanks.
Do you do commissions?
Nope
Will you have prints, CDs, or merchandise?
I'm going to re-print my earlier "Nouvelles" paper comic, and even try to add a few pages if I have the time. If you want, I will give you one free, while supplies last.
Will you have Art in the Art Show?
No. I wish I had the time to make something for it, but this year was exceptionally busy. Perhaps next year?
Who will you be with?
comp5, goldenboiblaze, kilmo, htw, artdecade, clup, jason miller, wolfyama, dwudles, fabercastel (if he can come), cubetriangle, thatoneguy, atmus, mook, modestwolf, yoshinomi, and many others!
What is your main purpose for attending?
To see old friends and meet new ones.
Can I talk to you?
I'm happy to talk with people, sure!
Can I take pictures with you?
I'd really rather not, thanks. And by that, I mean "no."
Can I touch/hug/cuddle you?
Handshakes are fine, bros can hug.
Can I hang out with you?
I'll quote artdecade, the fellow from whom I copied this meme: "if we're in some kind of party scenario, heck yeah, but don't like, invite yourself to go do stuff with me, that's pretty rude, don't be rude"
Do you go to parties?
Sometimes, but I'll be hanging out with my core group of friends for the most part.
Do you fursuit/costume?
I wish I had a redacteursuit. For now, my usual body will have to suffice.
Anything else?
Yeah, this meme is really weird! At first it felt like it was directed toward people who have no sense of basic public conduct, but I realize it's probably for artists and performers who are trying to maximize their exposure and presence at the con, and to set clear boundaries (i.e., whether a fursuiter can be hugged or not.) But I'm just there to meet with friends and socialize.
Of course friends can hug me, call me by my real name, take photos with me like normal friends do, and hang out! I'm not really looking to work or promote myself at the con. If we haven't met, I'm happy to chat and doodle in your sketchbook, but my social activities are largely set for the weekend. See you there?

Thank you for your responses
Posted 13 years agoI heartily enjoyed reading the responses to my "How did you get here?" questionnaire.
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3370131/
I might clarify that the last question (7. Counting both online and offline interactions, do you spend more leisure time with furries, or with friends not involved in the fandom?) wasn't meant to imply that one group of people was better than the other, or that everyone kept their furry and non-furry friends intentionally divided. I asked because my furry and non-furry friends are separate, mainly because they're already divided by distance; the non-furs are mostly in close proximity to my physical self, and my furry friends aren't local, and are spread across North America and the world. Due to this distance, I find myself spending large amounts of time on the computer to communicate with them, and I'm concerned with neglecting my other group of friends-by-proximity. Due to the highly specific and compelling nature of this interest, it's very easy to spend more time online, and reject smoky bars or get-togethers where the company can't be curated as easily as a watch list. If I someday live in a place where the groups co-mingled, I certainly wouldn't stop them from doing so.
Thank you again for your thoughtful comments and responses.

Questionnaire: How did you get here?
Posted 13 years agoI'm always interested in hearing about how we found our way to this unusual interest. If you wish, feel free to answer here or in your own journal.
1. How did you discover this fandom?
2. Did you participate as soon as you could, or did you "lurk" for a while? If so, how long?
3. What was your first contact with another furry in person?
4. What is you level of involvement with the community? Do you do draw [edit: oops, unfinished question! I was supposed to ask "Do you draw, write, build costumes, participate in forums, etc.?]
5. Did you like anthropomorphic animals before you found out about the fandom?
6. Did you begin creative activity (drawing, painting, writing, music, etc.) or greatly increase your creative activity after finding the fandom?
7. Counting both online and offline interactions, do you spend more leisure time with furries, or with friends not involved in the fandom?
I'm tagging no one! Answer only if you feel like it. Thank you for your interest.

MFF Overview
Posted 14 years agoAgainst fears that I'd be getting tired of cons, MFF revealed itself to be the most inspiring and uplifting event of the year. I can't get over how total and open I feel with my MFF-set; even in the most bleak O'Hare glass-and-concrete hotel suburb there's never a dull moment with a crew of people who "get it," who have sought the same connections after years of self-repression and seemingly strange adolescent desires.
was the most gracious and helpful recently-ex-Chicagoan who showed us around to all the cool restaurants, arcades, music stores, and karaoke bars.
coordinated and cheered us on into attending the con in the first place, and drove many of us around (along with cube) to and fro across the suburbs and under the runways of Chicagoland.
Against my expectations and my inability to dance with any sort of cohesive style, I enjoyed the dances immensely. It's only at cons that my group of friends are the boldest and most scandalous dancers. Seriously, it seems most other furries just stand alone and shuffle side-to-side. Get out there and hump something!
It was a pleasure to get invited to a "gear party," a sort of con-within-a-con, where aficionados of all things leather, rubber and uniform gathered to hang out with their kin. Despite lurid rumors, it was just a space where like-minded folks could hang out in their favorite fetish gear, from the custom rubber body suit to the off-the-shelf football jersey: Some might find it strange, but imagine how one might feel silently carrying a connection to the feel of rubber or the design of a motorcycle uniform. How wonderful that they can connect and feel a sense of community! A friend/good dog there graciously helped me into a gag-integrated pup-play mask so that I might feel welcome among their kin. I can't say I found it especially sexy (okay, a little,) but I was grateful for the exposure to this culture.
Above all, the best moments were spent just hanging out and drawing with my friends old and new: Clup, atmus23, Madast, r-mutt, cubetriangle, birds, marcothecat, Thomas Blue, Ryou, thatoneguy297, Calvester, Fvorte, ianjay, and so many others! Sorry if I forgot anyone, rest assured that I love you all!

MFF Questionnaire
Posted 14 years agoStolen from
cubetriangle and heavily modified.
What day are you getting there and what day are you leaving?
Early Thursday evening through Monday evening.
Who will you be with?
Rooming with
r-mutt
clup
cubetriangle
birds
madast, and looking forward to hanging with a bunch of cool folks like
marcothecat,
atmus23,
thatoneguy297 and many, many others! I hope this con is a bit more relaxed that AC; AC was great but there were so many people that I wished I could have hung out with in greater depth.
How old are you?
29. One more year before I get renewed...
How tall are you?
6'2"
What do you look like?
Bearded, dark hair, tall, caucasian, fuzzy, and wearing a blue pilot's shirt at least one day of the con.
What is your badge name?
Redacteur.
What do you prefer to be called?
If you're trying to get my attention, you can just say "Ree-dack-tur;" don't worry about the French pronunciation. I never do.
Will you have any fursuits?
I might get to try out a friend's suit, and I might go anonymously in it...you'll never know who's who! I'm so excited to try 'suiting.
Can I touch you?
If you're new, a handshake is always nice! Bros can hug.
Can I talk to you?
I'll quote
cubetriangle, the fellow from whom I copied this meme: "Please do! If you know me from the internet and think "oh, he's all with his cool furry friends, he'll never talk to a nobody like me," cut that shit out! I would LOVE to meet you."
Are you nice?
People tell me that I look serious and stoic, but I have a reputation for being exceedingly kind. That is, to those who are kind in return.
Are you cliquey?
No, but at cons people usually hang out with their friends, I guess? I'm happy to meet people but inviting yourself along to parties or meals is unwelcome.
Can I stalk you?
Please don't, just say hello! I love to meet the people that I only get to see online.
Can I buy you lots of drinks?
I'm not much of a drinker, really; I can manage the few drinks I'll be consuming, thanks!
Do you do trades?
Sketchbook swaps are cool, and I'll gladly sketch a little something for anyone.
Do you do commissions?
Not at cons! This is vacation time.
What should I not do around you?
Nothing that adults wouldn't do to each other in public social settings, I suppose?

What day are you getting there and what day are you leaving?
