Artist questionnaire
Posted 15 years agoI first saw it from
emorottie
1. What are elements of your style?
I try to vary and expand my drawing abilities through different styles, but I mostly enjoy drawing in the Franco-Belgian ligne claire comic style, which involves a single line width throughout the character and little shadow (for the most part). It's also a very basic look, similar to the illustrations seen in airline safety cards. It's the best I can do with the knowledge and abilities I have. I like the style, but I'd like to learn more advanced styles.
2. Have you had formal training? (e.g., college, personal instructor, etc.)
I took basic art classes in middle school. I had a few drawing instruction classes in my undergraduate college years in the form of figure drawing and advanced conceptual drawing, where I ventured briefly into what would become my current style.
3. Was it useful or did you find it better to learn on your own?
It was helpful to establish a foundation of realistic proportions and things like vanishing lines. My cartooning abilities were self-taught; Notable influences in sequential technique include Scott McCloud, instructional drawings (safety cards again), and the influence of video editing/cinema.
4. What are your tools of the trade?
Computer: A borrowed Wacom Intuos 3 and Gimp. I haven't explored other drawing program options.
Paper: Various sketchbooks, the occasional bristol board scrap, and technical drawing pens like Micron. For pencil, I use whatever 0.5mm mechanical pencil I have handy. Marvy's Le Pen is good for cheap color doodling.
5. Would you, or do you work on art for a living?
I hope to publish a graphic novel or comic someday, and this will happen, even if it is a self-produced zine. Whether or not I'll make money off them is another matter.
6. Do you know another artist who would fill this out?
They already have.

Inspiration/Ask me questions
Posted 15 years agoOver the course of the past week, some of my favorite artists have uploaded drawings which they have stated as being inspired by my works. Given that I have not even passed six months of existence here on FA, I'm quite humbled and honored to influence some of my longtime favorite artists:

Also, if you so wish, feel free to ask me questions about my work, either publicly or in private message. I love discussing influences and the like, and no-one should feel like I'm unapproachable. I just don't want that discussion in an anonymous place like formspring, so ask me here on FA!

Drawing for printing with GIMP
Posted 15 years agoDoes anyone have any tips for drawing with GIMP with printing in mind? I'm drawing at 300 dpi but the results remind me of watching a VHS tape with a video projector. Should I go to 600? Or perhaps you might recommend a good tutorial in drawing with GIMP? Many thanks in advance.
Birthday time- It sucks being 18
Posted 15 years agoGood thing I'm 28. :3
Seriously though, the late teens/early 20's were the most angst-ridden time in my life. But now I feel increasingly happy and balanced as I finally settle into adulthood. By 38, I should be completely happy, and by 48, I should be at the zenith of peace and contentment. I don't know if my body will be able to handle the immense cheerfulness that will dominate my retirement years.
For all you youngsters, know that life improves after university years. That is my birthday wish for you all.

Plans for the future
Posted 15 years agoI began posting drawings to this site in late June, and the response from you all in these short months has been nothing short of overwhelming. I've gone from drawing once a week or so to every day. As such, my improvement in illustration skill has greatly exceeded my expectations. My dream is coming true: You all should expect a graphic novella from me by the time Anthrocon 2011 happens!
I read about Louis Wain
Posted 15 years agoI read about him in Cabinet magazine today. In his time (Edwardian England) he made a name for himself with amusing drawings of anthropomorphic cats, which were featured in books, magazines, stationery and the like. He suffered from schizophrenia later in this life, and made drawings which were supposedly more abstract and intense as his illness progressed.
Contrary to what I read in the article, his more conventional cat drawings continued alongside the more abstract work. In any case, his wikipedia entry makes for a fascinating read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Wain

doggeHow late do you all stay up?
Posted 15 years agoI keep late hours during the summer, partly due to the legacy of my former career in the news business. When I post a drawing right before my usual bedtime of 4am EST, I always get a handful of immediate responses. This doesn't really apply to people who are living outside of the EST/GMT+5 time zone; I'm just curious about kindred spirits sharing a late-night F5 obsession.

Drawing every day works/Cow and Chicken
Posted 15 years agoI was looking through some of my earliest submissions, and good golly, I think I've advanced in drawing skill more in the past month than I have in the whole preceding year. If you wish to develop your illustration abilities, surely practice every day.
Also, I saw an episode of Cow and Chicken online a few hours ago, and I was surprised at how much I laughed. I remember watching it in the late 90's but I don't remember it being this funny. I suppose I've matured enough for all of the adult jokes, and I've been an adult long enough to be surprised at the gags that probably didn't phase me as a kid (such as Cow refilling her brother's milk carton from her own udder!)

Real life separation
Posted 15 years agoDear friends,
If I'm ever vague about my real life goings-on in comments or messages, don't fret! I just want to keep my anthro art life here on FA separate from the details of my flesh-life. I'm no celebrity by any means; We're all google-able in this age and I'd like to keep the major details of my day-to-day logistics a pleasant mystery. Rest assured that little snippets will still bleed through in journal comics, however! :3
And thank you for your continued comments and messages; I do read and appreciate them all.

Artistic influences
Posted 15 years agoI love to draw. There's a wonderful mixture of accomplishment, release, creation, and joy that I feel when drawing. So, it was with great happiness that I found an appreciative audience on FA, of which many here are artists I've admired long before I began posting my own drawings. I thought I would share some of the artists who have influenced my particular style.
When I was a young lad, I read all of Hergé's Tintin books and admired his "ligne clair" style. In my adolescence, I developed a love for flying and collected airplane safety cards, which also featured clean lines and bold, minimal styling. In my youth, I drew almost nothing but commercial airliners and occasionally building cross sections, due to the influence of Ed Emberly's Make A World drawing instruction book. Also, I enjoy the graphic design, instructional drawings and owner's manuals from the late 70's and early 80's.
The story of how I got into the furry side of things is for another day. I admire many works in modern alternative comics and graphic novels, like Jason, Lewis Trondheim, Blacksad, Cat & Girl, Achewood and others. In the furry world, there and dozens of artists that I admire and follow, but the styles of roboinu,
artdecade,
voln,
tark and
hottapwater are especially influential.

I'm deeply appreciative of your comments, watches and kind words. After years of lurking and working on bringing my drawing skill to a competent level, I'm grateful to connect with not only artists I've admired over the years, but with all of the new ones, too! Thank you, everyone.
