A gallery is functional though and the waterposrts gallery is in it's own site that would have it's own things too.

Agressive Drivers and Car Horns
Posted 15 years agoYou know what really pisses me off, jerks that think the car horn was made to rush people in front of them, weather they are waiting to turn on to busy highway or the very microsecond the light has just turned green. No, I don't care how late someone is or how badass they think they are on the road, I'm not going to risk getting side-swiped just for the pricks! And before one asks, no I don't drive slow, I drive at or at 5 miles above the speed limit and follow traffic rules like stop signs because I don't want a goddamn ticket! Gah, this is why I hate driving, there's too many assholes on the road!

"Human" and "Man"
Posted 15 years agoSomeone in another forum had a great idea, sometimes there's a discussion on finding a gender-neutral alternative to the English language, often followed by cries of political-correctness and double standards. But a lot of solutions for this involve making up new words or adopting ancient words that nobody uses in modern English.
But an easier fix might be to simply swap the meaning of "human" and "man." That is "human" refers to a male person and "man" is a gender-neutral term that refers to the species as a whole. This way "woman" isn't an exception where the male term is the default, both words have a prefix in front of the word "man". Maybe "manity" and "mankind" can cover all "men" regardless of gender, while "humanity" covers all males and "womanity" covers all females. And in additon "man" can cover trandgenders and internsexed. Only hurdle of course is to get used to the language change, which is probably a lot of work.

Lost Generation?
Posted 15 years agoWith an economy and job market that doesn't seem to be getting better, anywhere, sometimes I wonder if my generation is the lost generation, possibly even a dead generation. My parents keep telling me that the recession is going to end and jobs will pick up again just like it has before but are we really guaranteed that? What if things get only worse from here on out?
It's just something always in the back of my mind, I live day-to-day with this sort of dull fear that everything I do is futile and I'm just headed for failure.

The Legandary 20th Century
Posted 15 years agoFor a long, long while I've been really interested in pop-culture from various eras of the past century, and for some reason especially early-to-mid century. Recently I've been asked way, and now that I think of it, it's purely on a inspirational standpoint. You see, anything before the mid 80's I was either too young to remember or haven't been born yet, all I have to go by is hearsay and the romantic-view of the past decades that's produced by visual art, television, film, print, and music... often given with a strong nostalgia filter.
And so, because of that, the 20th century is pretty much a fantasy world now. there's reality that's given to us by history of course, but it's more fun to have a distorted look at it I think. It's become the new fantasy, along with the 1800's that thanks to steampunk has nearly joined the ranks of high fantasy that distorts medieval history.
For some reason I want to draw an idealistic element from the past and mold it into something for the now, like what if something today can be made out of the 40's and 50's that never was, full of swing and rock n' roll and cool cars, but minus the war and the racism and the sexism? How is that different from high fantasy that tells us that there were dragons and wizards in Medieval Europe when we know for a fact that things were quite a bit more mundane back then, even the epic suits of armor only came around shortly before everything went towards gunpowder right? Suits of armor are kind of like disco for the 70's, disco only had a narrow window of popularity towards the end of the 70's but people tend to define the whole decade by it right? And romanticism totally happened to the old west during the past century in a similar way the past century is being done today.
I find it interesting how that happens at least.

Art Can't Have Nice Things? (Rant)
Posted 15 years agoSo I've just got back from a critique from one of my classes, and a girl's in-progress piece is a series based on a couple finding love right? No irony or anything, it simply is what it is. The professor remarked that the theme is too cheerful and feels like a greeting-card or something, and this got me thinking.
Why can't a work of art have a simple, positive meaning to it? Does the theme have to be more negative for it to be considered "real art?" I've come to the personal conviction that an artist should have the right to express their full range of emotions, and that angst doesn't make one edgy, but in fact it itself might be cliche. I'm not saying that everything is fine and life is great all the time and everyone should put on a fake smile, just that there is a time and place for everything, and I'm sorry but life is not always shit. Even if you want to go the nihilistic route and say that happiness doesn't exist, then you must admit that depression doesn't exist either, and in fact art doesn't exist and it's all a free for all anyways. Heck, this is even coming from someone that just submitted pieces that have a very dark theme, but I also like to submit things with a little humor or camp too, it's just want I want to do at any particular time.
I know a local artist that likes to make cute sometimes, and you know what, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Art Meme
Posted 15 years agoHey what's good enough for LJ is good enough for here so:
1. Do you consider yourself an artist?
2. Who’s your favorite:
a. Visual artist? (like painter, or sculptor)
b. Musician?
c. Actor, Director. Performer?
3. What’s your favorite architectural style?
4. Do you get abstract art?
5. If you could commission any artist in history who would it be?
6. Do you think erotic art can be art or is it just porn?
7. What’s your personal favorite art medium?
8. Have any favorite art galleries or museums?
9. What’s the most unorthodox thing you consider art?
10. Now say something snobby and pretentious :D

Stuff That Doesn't Make Sense
Posted 15 years agoYou know what doesn't make any sense? Canine "accents", you know like Scooby Doo or Astro from the Jetsons. I mean, if dogs suddenly had the ability to speak English or some other human language I seriously doubt they'd go "I ruff roo Raggy!" Or would they? I mean, "barking" doesn't so much involve enunciating "woof" as just vocialising their natural call. We don't enunciate when we cough, it just happens, that's why we don't speak in cough... at least not by accident.
Anyways, why does Scooby Doo talk anyways? Throughout the cartoon's history I do not ever remember hearing some explaination as to why Scooby talks, or Astro for that matter. At least you can speculate about Astro, in the future dogs will evolve the ability to talk, or at least will try too.

Relgion/Rationalism BS at Four in the Mourning Yay Insomnia
Posted 15 years agoProbably something I've probably touched on before either here or in livejournal but...
It is entirely possible to be moderately religious yet suportive of the scientific method right? Because in the end I think I'm a pagan - particularly a wiccan and a Egpytian reconstructionist, witch some leanings twords chaos magic - that holdes a very agnostic view twords things and accepts scientific fact as the "known" while keeping a healthy interest in the "unknown". I often find myself tired of the notion that science has to be against faith, I always liked to think that without imagination there can't be any exploration. That exploration is what results in the discovery of hard fact. The problem is that if in any case we become complacent and stop asking the questions, we doom ourselves to ignorance. If there's any real reason why I can't just become an athiest I think it's that I want to hang on to inspirational fantasy stuff that makes things like creating art worth-while to me. I don't want the world to just become ordinary, I want there to be some element of "wow what just happened I can't explain it" to be out there. It's like, I hate that guy on YouTube that declares anything remotely interesting "FAKE", I mean... sure it very well may be fake, but stop ruining the fun!
It helps to when someone just realises that life is much easier when you don't take all that exisitentialism-type stuff too seriously. Any religion is going to be silly, but who said that is a bad thing? When you take a agnostic approach on things, it's like... why not a Flying Spaghetti Monster? The appearance of a god, whether or not there is a god, is wholly in the realm of human imagination anyways so you might as well make them into something that you'd be too embarrassed to... say... start wars over?
Oh and when people start those stupid creationist-vs-evolution debates (my opinion: we very-strongly-most-likely evolved, but the important thing is we're here, get over it)... please keep in mind that yes there are other belief-systems out there besides Christianity and Atheism. So when Poe's Law strikes, and some wild, crazy fundamentalist says sometihng really godawful stupid... please remember that member does not represent Christianity as a whole let alone world religion as a whole. I know I'd rather leave out of that, because that kind of stuff is just the internet anyways. It's all a great big stupid people vs stupid people fun fest.
And last but certainly not least. I have this odd love-hate relationship with kneeded erasers. They are so usefull and it's so much fun to just squish the ever living shit out of them. But it gets real annoying when pieces break off and get into the carpet man.

No Spec/ No Added Projects
Posted 15 years agoShould've done this a long time ago but I think that in future comissions I will ask for a fraction of payment upfront before any preliminary sketches or so forth. If one needs to see examples before a comission my gallery is free to look through. In addition once the finished product is done the contract will be fullfilled and I will need to move on to other clients. Doing more then one project for one person is simply not fair for the other people waiting for their comissions.
I'm slowly getting used to the business aspects of doing comission work, I'm not quite as good at doing the commisions thing as I am just simply drawing I'm afraid.

The Other Comic (Need Some Help)
Posted 15 years agoI'm of course refering to my comic idea "Stag", which trades the SciFi setting of Elysium Gate for the 1970's. The band in the comic offers a bit of challenge: presenting music in a written medium. No matter what I do, the sound of the band Stag is always going to be left of to the imagination of the reader as long as it's a comic. There's two ways I can go about this and I was wondering which one you would like to see the most:
The first is to create entirely new "songs" for Stag to play which would take the form of poetry with implied music acomponing it. This involves the reader keeping in mind they, as a band, are somewhere between a 70's glam rock band and an arena rock band, and emulate that kind of sound in most of their songs. Particularly I always imagined Stag sounding a lot like Sweet or Slade.
The second option is to have the band cover acutall songs from that era, roughly all of the 70's and a little of the 60's as far as available material. This way the reader would already be familiar with all the songs and would know exactly what they sound like. In this way Stag will follow a formula similar to The Blues Brothers or Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Thinking Elysium Gate Again
Posted 15 years agoI've now decided I don't want to reboot the comic, maybe just do an art update later on, but contenue the story as is.
Now thougn't know if I should skip ahead a chapter to something a bit more interesting where the action really starts up and use the begining exposition as flashbacks, or to start off where I left off and finish the 2nd chapter.
I also want to introduce a little bit of comic horror to the story somehow. The comic takes place on Earth in the distant future, with the abscence of humanity and the eveloution of other species to replace them. This was origionaly going to be a big reveal, but it seems a tad cliche as one and it's easy to figure out that's what's going on from the start.
But one question begs to be explored, what happened to the humans? Or more specificly, what threat to them happens to US in the future? What lies in wait to betray our belief in our own safety here on Earth?
And one final note is that I asked my friend Heartwood to help me write some for it, making the story logically advance is going to be a definate challange, I have ideas of where the characters need to go... but I have to give some pretty convincing reasons to bring them there.
Also thinking of deleting or alterating a charcter that's dangerously close to Mary Sue territory

More Film Contemplation
Posted 16 years agoThe last post was fueled mostly by studying Quentin Tarantino and his blending in of "The Western" with other movie settings. Him, Kubrick, David Lynch, and Gilliam combine as the directors I most want to imitate. I'm like "OMG I want to make a movie like that!" whenever I see one of their films.
But I don't want to copy. I'm sure Quentin uses the "western" theme a lot because it's what he grew up watching... since that's more of a thing encountered before the 80's.
Hmm, if I wanted to sneak in a naraitive style I want it to me something I grew up with. The most overwelming thing I can think of is videogames... how would a videogame-like story fit into a movie?
Also excuse the spelling, meh

Student Film Idea
Posted 16 years agoI have to do another student film this year
I just thought of something, what if there was a "spaghetti western", but modern and taking place in the "boondocks" or something similar. Something kind of ironic like... what I can only describe as a redneck western.
Maybe something that takes elements from slasher films in this setting like "The Hills Have Eyes" or "The Devil's Rejects" . But sort of made into this self-contained world something like a western can take place in... maybe.
The idea is just too out there no to attempt, from what I've seen there are already "horror westerns" out there, but they usually look tounge-and-cheek and use the "monster" aspect of horror movies, never using the "slasher", "grindhouse" or "gorn" aspect of horror movies in something like this. And since backwoods and small town locations are fequently used for those kind of movies it would be kind of fun to make a movie that explores that kind of setting-genre mix.

Time
Posted 16 years agoI wonder, is there a proper term or anything that describes the illustion of time flying or vice versa? Like sometimes a whole day can go by in a blink or seem to stand still. Dreaming appears to last longer then it acutaly does and I remember someone describing a psychedelic experience where they lived for years on some other world before coming back to reality. :p
