Team Fortress 2 Question: Commentary
Posted 14 years agoHeya everyone! I'm an avid player of TF2 and was curious if people would be interested in me doing any commentary? I've seen a few people who have done it before and seems like it can be really fun! Though I wouldn't want to bore people or anything lol.

Duke Nukem Forever: A Technical Review
Posted 14 years agoI'm sure those of you who are mildly interested in DNF have read countless reviews and have spoken with people first hand who have played it. From what I've heard/read, people don't like it. Some say that it doesn't fit the mood, the weapons are wrong, Duke's voice sucks...blah blah blah. I'm playing the game, liking it so far! I mean sure, it's not perfect no game really is, but it's enjoyable and worth the money I spent pre-ordering it with a discount.
But no, this review is going to cover some things I didn't see on other reviews: Technical information. This review will be from a PC perspective, I haven't played the Xbox/PS3 versions so I apologize to any Console players out there (maybe not).
PC Specs:
Monitor(s): Haans-G 28" @ 1920x1200 - 3 Each
Video Card: ATI Radeon 5970
Processor: Intel Sandybridge 2600k OC @ 4.5Ghz
HDD: 3 x 640GB @ RAID 0
Memory: 8GB G-Skill Ripjaw OC @ 2133Mhz
Graphics Settings
Everything set to Highest in game: Ultra
Resolutions tested: 1920x1200 and 5760x1200 (Eyefinity)
Technical Review
This game uses the Unreal 3 Engine, and for those of you who don't know it, used in Unreal Tournament 2007, Gears of War, Boarderlands, Mass Effect, etc. I've worked with the Unreal 3 UDK engine before, it's very nice to use, and can be very rewarding as far as visuals. And DNF doesn't fail to impress, the game environments look great, especially the lighting and the water effects. Some of the human characters could use a bit of work in the Lip sync department, but a minor oversight.
Now, reading other reviews, I've read that Loading times are just horrible (about 45 seconds) and yes, that is unacceptable. But, from what I know that's on the Consoles. For me, loading was literally 5 seconds, it was amazingly fast to load! I didn't even get that good of loading times in Portal 2/Half life 2 games! So even with a PC without RAIDed hard drives would probably get 5-10 seconds at most, that's completely bearable because the levels can be a little large at times. DNF also uses some Depth of Field techniques, but I find it really weird to look at. You can see a clear definition line of where it starts, and when you zoom in with your gun, almost your entire screen gets "blurry" like the DOF is set too close to the player. Not sure if this was for a "neat" visual look, or to hide lower-res backgrounds. Whatever the case, it's slightly annoying
Sometimes what games will do to "artificially" lengthen their games, is make you go back and forth through a level a couple times to "bring back" something in one form or another. This is both used to make the game seem longer, and also saves on Memory so that the designers don't have to make more levels. DNF does this a couple times from what I saw, but was different when you went back through, like different forms of destruction or shrink vs big Duke. Speaking of levels, they had a couple little physics things in there, reminded me of Half Life 2 when playing it. Not really needed, just thrown in there to make the player thing with Physics for a second lol.
As far as actual performance in the game, I was a tad worried when I played the Demo. It was a bit laggy, especially running 5760x1200 Eyefinity. But I was surprised that the game ran flawlessly, even ran great in Eyefinity. Though, a few words on Eyefinity in the game. It looks fine and I'm glad they support it, unlike MANY other Unreal3 games it doesn't work at all, the Field of View is all messed up. Though, a couple minor things that I noticed: HUD, as minmal as it is, is placed on the far corners of the screen, not centered on the middle monitor, and the Horizontal mouse movement sensitivity is based on your Resolution. So, in normal res (1920x1200) mouse works fine, but in 5760x1200, the horizontal mouse movement is much less sensitive than the vertical and can be annoying to move around and look.
Conclusion
tl;dl, sorry if this was VERY long, just wanted to state my opinions whether anybody cares or not. Depsite all the bad reviews, I think it helped me to enjoy this game even more and am still working on completing it. Favorite Duke line so far: "God Damnit Leeroy!"
EDIT: I just found out that DNF is running on Unreal Engine 2.5, not 3...no wonder it looks good but has a few hiccups!

I'm a Nerd
Posted 14 years agoWell, I've finally done it. After 5 years of being Loyal to AMD, I'm finally getting a new Motherboard/Processor: Intel Sandybridge 2600K. And no, nothing happened to my current one, I just want to be able to do a couple things:
1: Get better performance in games, Rendering, and UDK
2: Overclock greater than 400Mhz (Seriously, my Phenom II 965 didn't want to go any higher!)

Holy Snow, Batman!
Posted 15 years agoYeah it's official as of last night...we got a Record amount of snow in our area...22" in 1 day...and that's accumulation before it gets pushed around. So now, with the wind and plows pushing it around, there are mounds of snow higher than houses. A little snow is okay, but tons of it sucks, especially over the weekend :(
