Eurovision 2016 first thoughts
General | Posted 10 years agoHere are my opinions on this year's Eurovision entries. Feel free to add your own thoughts down below.
Semi Final 11. Finland. Funky and catchy. Sounds like Dar Um Jeito, but likely to be forgotten.
2. Greece. O.o, that is all. Chorus stretches the definition of 'rhyme' a lot [sun/land].
3. Moldova. Classic Eurovision beat, though sounds like Steps. As much as I like it, it's kinda clichéd.
4. Hungary. Not overly exciting, and it's kinda hard to understand him. Meh, really.
5. Croatia. I think she's trying to be Ellie Goulding, and though it's Eurovisiony, isn't quite pulled off.
6. Netherlands. I like it. Funky and fresh. Nice guitar solo.
7. Armenia. Reminds me of Latvia's disaterous song last year, but it's alright, I guess.
8. San Marino. I like this one, as creepy as it is. Chorus is catchy.
9. Russia. Very 00's Europop. Catchy, fun and I hope they can carry the visuals to the live show from the video.
10. Czech Republic. It's alright. Standard ballard that doesn't really go anywhere but picks up as it goes on.
11. Cyprus. Strong entry. Catchy and up tempo, it stands out well and could go far. Bonus points for dog.
12. Austria. Boring and airy-fairy. Not a lot going on.
13. Estonia. Slightly better than Austria, but still a bit meh.
14. Azerbaijan. Forgettable, if somewhat catchy. Not looking great for them.
15. Montengro. Not pulling the rock off as well as the Cypriots, but an alright song. Sick wubs might save them.
16. Iceland. A combination of Euphoria, Only Teardrops and Heroes. Decent song, kinda catchy.
17. Bosnia & Herzegovina. Again, another flat song that doesn't really go anywhere. The rap/chello bridge is interesting though
18. Malta. Has a modern chart vibe, with a Eurovisiony chorus, which kinda lets it down as the pre-chorus is good.
Semi Final 21. Latvia. Only really picks up halfway through, but kinda meh.
2. Poland. Alright ballad, some classic tropes throughout.
3. Switzerland. Better than the last two, but still missing something. Otherwise, a decent song.
4. Israel. A nice little song that builds well and has some nice lines. Bonus points for being semi-scientifically accurate.
5. Belarus. Classicly Eurovision in composure and form. Kinda funky, but not a winner.
6. Serbia. Another Rise Like A Phoenix-esque song, but not as good. Wil be interesting to see how the whole orchestra will fit on stage with a 6 person limit.
7. Ireland. Slightly biased from my love for Nicky, but good song! Chorus needs a little extra oomph though with the pre-chorus like that.
8. F. Y. R. Macedonia. It started off a little rocky, but picked up well by the chorus. I'm a sucker for instrumental build ups and orchestral rock (like in musicals. Y'know, having a guy on electric guitar and some strings and drums and stuff?)
9. Lithuania. Excellent chorus, verse beat is a little too clicky for me. Overall, good song. Should make LHS of board.
10. Australia. Oh, Australia. It's only your second year and you've already got too-many-syllables-in-one-line syndrome. Alright song, though Tonight Again was better.
11. Slovenia. Nice song with a good chorus, though the banjo wasn't really necessary. The singer has also never heard of purple.
12. Bulgaria. Another modern chart beat with Eurovisiony undertones. Decent song, not really a winner.
13. Denmark. Good boy band song; enjoyable. I like it. Will capture the audience, but might not retain.
14. Ukraine. Bland, boring, doesn't do a lot. Mostly throat singing.
15. Norway. Has Euphoria undertones in the verses, and the changes in tempo and pace threw me off slightly. Decent song, but the verses are better than the chorus here.
16. Georgia. Sounds like Oasis crossed with Muse. The bridge I enjoyed as it took me by surprise and gives an interesting break.
17. Albania. Alright song. A bit like an uptempo (Everything I Do) I Do It For You.
18. Belgium. Funky, the 70's disco and the 80's bass hook work well, and it's catchy. Sounds like that song with the trumpets.
Grand Final1. France. Catchy, though the verses remind me of the disaster that was 2014. Good chorus.
2. Germany. Kinda bland, wouldn't be surprised with a RHS finish. Singer's outfit really doesn't fit. If they're going for kookiness (á la Conchita), it just looks tacky.
3. Italy. It's alright; not gonna be as good as last year, but might do alright.
4. Spain. Again, another big 5 song that isn't spectacular. Chorus lets this one down, though the verses/pre-chorus are okay.
5. Sweden. Not too bad. A little down, but quite nice. The semi-sung, semi-spoken lyrics makes me think of the mid-00's
6. United Kingdom. Even though I'm biased to the home crowd, I still think it's one of the best of the auto-qualifiers. Sounds a bit like a One Direction song. Not likely to win though.
Semi Final 11. Finland. Funky and catchy. Sounds like Dar Um Jeito, but likely to be forgotten.
