General update to indicate that I am alive
Posted 13 years agoI've been having a pretty rough few months. Dealing with a lot of real-world stuff right now and it is not easy. Thank you so much for being patient-- I'm doing my best to feel better and be able to work on these projects, but I can't help it when they do sometimes have to take a back-seat to legitimate obstacles in my life.
I was actually able to ink for a bit last night while
eryshefalafel was over for bacon tacos and hanging out, so that made me feel good, but I know it's not fast enough. I'm stressed out because things have been so tight financially, too, and I know I can't afford to take more projects unless I'm getting these existing ones done in a more timely manner. I'll keep updating the status list below as usual, as I have progress to show.
I'm hoping to open for 3" button badges in the near future-- I finally got my new circle cutter in the mail after the hurricane, but because things have been crazy, I didn't get to try it out right away. I finally put together the badge I'd started for myself over a year ago (which is probably the first badge I've drawn for myself since 2003) and it looks gorgeous. It does make me excited to make more buttons and get art done in general, so I'm keeping it out where I can see it and have it help motivate me (right next to my "Quit Procrastinating" Batman).

Want to know? Ask me questions :)
Posted 13 years agoI'm feeling a little too quiet. So while I'm working on arts in silence, ask me questions. About me, my art, whatever.
(If the question is too personal or weird, please understand that I won't necessarily answer)

Progress and ***FAUnited*** preorders
Posted 13 years agoI'm making steady progress on my commission queue, and will keep updating the journal footer as I go along (in addition to uploading the images as they're done!)
I will be attending
faunited August 17-19 in New Jersey.
I have a dealer table, so please come by and say hello! I plan to do pencil sketches (yes, I do sketchbooks!) and 3x4" con badges (unless I can find the circle cutter for my button maker before then). I will have some new prints to sell and hopefully some ACEOs.
I tend to fill up on commission slots quickly at conventions, so if you know you would like to get something from me at the con, please consider preordering! Preorders are not limited to sketches and 3x4" badges, but may still be limited based on what I feel I can complete in time for pickup at the convention. Please email me to discuss if you are interested!
If you haven't registered for FAU yet, what are you waiting for? It's an awesome little con. <3

Posted 13 years agoI'm doing my best to make progress on my queue. My goal is to complete as many as possible prior to FAUnited.
I can't promise what order I'm going to finish things in, but everything needs to get finished. It'll sort of go by what I'm in the mood to work on at the time. Piece by piece. Until they're all accounted for and sent off into the world.
Thank you, as always, for your patience and encouragement.

Yay new categories / also general update
Posted 14 years agoSo, not having uploaded in awhile, I am pleased with the abundance of new species that can be specified in the submission details. It's also interesting that Dinosaur got split up into Sauropods and Theropods. Now all we need is a category for Ornithischians (you know, ceratopsians, stegos, ankys, and ornithopods like parasaurolophus and such) and we'll be pretty much set.
My own updates--
Finished Nagi-o, finally, and feel good about that. I need to work on my Furfright homework, which I haven't been able to sit down long enough to touch. Crossing my fingers for this friday, since my days off are few and far between at times :(
I'll be working on a plan of attack for the rest of my commission queue as well. Thinking about refunding more things if I can afford to... when the ideas sit for too long, they lose their luster, and become more difficult to work on, inspirationally. I'll see what I can do though... badgerben definitely gave me some encouragement while I was at Furfright and it has helped.
Please be patient with me, and I'll do my best to make it worth the wait.

Back (and still recovering) from Furfright
Posted 14 years agoYeah, I mean, we got back home monday morning... but I had to work that afternoon and each day since, so I am only finally starting to recover now.
I updated my journal footer to reflect my homework from the con. I didn't intend to bring things home, and I did a decent job of realistically limiting what I took over the weekend, but I didn't get to finish everything. Luckily everyone was pretty understanding about it (I do feel bad that people I know personally tend to get lumped into the "I know you, and you're not as likely to kill me if I don't get to do this today" end of the priority spectrum... sorry, guys).
That said, I had a pretty good con! I was sleep-deprived when I arrived, due to last-minute arrangements, packing and acquisition of supplies and such (not to mention going to see Ghostbusters on the big screen the night before we left!) so I was a little cranky when I finally made it to my table. I did my best to focus because I didn't want to waste the entire first day by passing out, and it wasn't too bad. The delirium that occurred later on made for some interesting inspiration when it came to a couple of the sketches I did.
My surprising productivity, and being able to spend a little time with good influences, made it a very positive con. Thank you,
badgerben, for the pep talk and the Batman macro. He sternly watched over us all convention, and shall have a place of honor on my desk, where he will continue to hold me immediately accountable for what I should be doing (although, right now, that would be "sleeping").
I didn't get scans of everything I did, because it turned out that even though I brought my trusty 11 year old laptop, in the flurry of packing, I somehow left the power cord at home, rendering it useless. However, the dealer culture has changed a LOT in the last 9 years, and where I used to be one of the only people at a con with a laptop and scanner, it seems like nearly every other person has at least one or the other or both now.
sirfox,
auradeva,
dingoroo (I think),
red-dog, and
daigo were very kind in sharing their technology. It really made me look forward to getting a new laptop or netbook that much more (it's a reward I've planned to treat myself to once my credit cards are paid off). At any rate, I hope to post those scans as soon as I get a chance to sit still and do that. With any luck, I will be able to coerce the owners of the other pics I finished to email me photos or scans. I am very proud of the work I did! :D
I do want to thank
ozzylotte and
fluffball for putting up with Fossil and I staying in their room. We're generally very respectful of our roommates... but other indirect aspects of having us there can definitely make it overwhelming at times. Plus, we tend to come back to the room just when you've finally gotten cozy and fallen asleep. No amount of quiet will make up for the bright hall lights streaming into a pitch black room at 2 or 3am!
I made a list of things I want to remember to do/get before the next convention I attempt. I look forward to finally being "prepared". Haha! But really, I feel a lot better about it currently than I used to. I want to use whatever is left of the momentum I have to work through my queue and finally feel free to feel better about myself more completely.
Love to all I haven't mentioned that made the con special. It was truly good to get away for a couple days and feel among friends again <3

Posted 14 years agoYes. I'll be there.
Trying to get finish some of my queue before I get there, so hopefully I'll be uploading some arts... mostly looking forward to seeing people I don't get to see often.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email! I'm sorry I've been so quiet... I feel like all I do is go to work, come home and sleep, and go back to work.

FA:U is approaching!
Posted 14 years agoI can't believe it's only a week and a half away now... I'm looking forward to it, but I also feel a little of the usual stress of wanting to make sure I'm ready in time :)
I plan to be there, hopefully I will be able to get a spot in the Artist Alley because I was waitlisted for the Dealers' Den. I will be offering mostly sketches, ACEOs, and possibly standard 3x4" con badges.
I am chipping away at my existing commission list, and it's starting to get smaller, finally :) I feel pretty good about that, and hope to finish a few projects that have been in progress for far too long over the next week and a half since my hours got cut at work and I have an extra day off than usual.
I AM curious to know if anyone would be interested in preordering a badge for the con-- I know there's not much time left, so I'd only feel comfortable taking one for the time being. You'll get updates as I'm working on it, to make sure it comes out right, and it would be ready for pick-up at FA:U. You can choose from a standard 3x4" badge with a holder, or a deluxe cutout laminated badge. Examples and details are available on my pricing page. I might be able to take more than one if I finish the first quickly enough, but I'd only be willing to commit to them one at a time. Believe me, I've learned my lesson >_<
FA:U Questionnaire
Arrival and Departure: Most likely Friday morning through Sunday night.
Staying at: The hotel
Mode of Transportation: Driving
Room Share:

Major Plans at the Con: Hopefully draw for people in the Artist Alley all weekend, but I'm looking forward to hanging out with friends I don't see often too.
Artwork / commissions: Sketch, ACEO, and standard badge commissions. I'm doing my best to have some ACEOs of my own designs for sale as well. I would like to do sketch trades if I have time.
How best to find me: With any luck, I'll be in the Alley for most of the con, but if not, I'll be around. If there is a bulletin/message board at the con, I'll do my best to leave notes saying where I'll be if I want to be found.
Drink: Bottled water, Dr. Pepper, or Mr. Pibb/Pibb Xtra. Mmm, sweet hydration and caffeine.
Smoke: No
Hugs: I generally only hug people that I know well.
Talk: I'm kind of shy, and tend to be nervous at cons when I'm trying to work on things and there are lots of distractions. Please don't be offended if I spend most of my time paying attention to artwork. I can listen and draw at the same time, but I may not have much to say.

For the record...
Posted 15 years agoI have NEVER been told that my work is anything like Fossil's, so don't worry your pretty little heads about it. I've never been accused of stealing art.
I guess I appreciate the concern, but my previous journal was entirely sarcastic. I don't even want to call it an inside joke, because it's not secret and it's not funny. Granted, most of my watchers probably wouldn't understand the context because the subject isn't important or interesting, so I can't blame people for replying to it in a confused manner.
It wasn't my idea to post the journal in the first place, but it's evidently my job to be the bad cop.
IN REAL NEWS
I should be finishing up a few more things shortly, so hopefully I will be uploading a couple of pieces later, with any luck and concentration.

Commission Terms
Posted 15 years agoTo inquire about a possible commission, please fill out my Commission Request Form or email me (scullyraptor@gmail.com) with decent references (attached or linked, or a precise description if necessary).
I reserve the right to be selective about which commissions I will take, based on subject, concept, and my availability.
Elaborate characters (wings, extra body parts, detailed patterns, etc.) may cost a little more, at my discretion, mainly because that sort of thing takes longer to do, and also may use more materials.
Payment can be made once I have agreed to your project. I generally prefer to receive full payment before starting, but I am open to discussing other options, such as installments made at art progress stages. I accept Paypal, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Wallet, Amazon and Target gift cards, but I am also willing to take Western Union, MoneyGram, and postal money orders (work does not begin until payment clears). If you need the items completed and/or mailed by a certain date, please include that in the email/request.
Approval/Revisions
Unless otherwise stated, for all inked/colored pieces, I will send you a sketch for approval prior to the inking stage. Any requests to change or add details must be made at this time, because it is difficult to do significant changes to the image once it is inked.
Any changes requested AFTER the sketch has been approved by you may be subject to an added revision fee, depending on the nature of the changes and the work it will involve to satisfy your request.
Streaming/Privacy
Depending on my schedule, I may stream live video of the progress as I work on projects. Please let me know if it is okay to stream video of your commission. If it is personal/private/a surprise for someone, that's totally cool, just let me know and I'll be happy to be discreet about it.
I am willing to schedule a time when you can watch. It's fun to watch artists work on things, especially when they're for you. So it's totally cool if you want me to wait until times when you're available. My streaming availability is dependent on my schedule, however, so please understand that I will make every attempt to accommodate you, within reason.
Shipping/What happens to the originals?
For physical artwork such as real media originals and/or digital prints, please include in your email what type of shipping you want, or if you want to pick it up at a convention I'll be attending (Usually FurFright and FA:United). Please add the cost of postage to the price of your commission, and provide the name & address they should be sent to.
Postage within the US:
First Class** with delivery confirmation $4
Priority Mail with delivery confirmation $6
(Please inquire for postage to other countries, it varies)
**ACEOs and 3x4" Standard badges are free First Class shipping to anywhere in the world.
Item Completion/Refunds
Once I get started on a commission, it is a fairly smooth process and I should be done within a week if all goes well. Smaller projects are completed much faster, under ideal conditions.
However, I am human and sometimes life gets in the way. As the Queue Status in my Journal footer will attest, I am in the process of catching up on some long overdue commissions.
Should you choose to cancel your commission and get a refund, I will understand.
Once I have begun work on your piece, should you change your mind and request a refund at that time, I will only refund the money for steps I have not yet completed.

After FA:U and other stuff!
Posted 15 years agoFA:U was a lot of fun, and is still my favorite con. I didn't get to take many commissions, because I was busy a lot of the time having away-from-table adventures and also didn't have much in the way of current samples to show. But it was still good. It was great to have time to hang out with people, too. <3
After the con, we had
likeshine staying with us, and she is a very house-trained gryphon. She made us so many delicious brownies, I am sure to gain back all the weight I'd lost. But it is WORTH IT. I am also pleased that she enjoyed my baked ziti, because birds are kinda picky sometimes! She needs to visit more often. I have decided this.
In other news...
GO COMMISSION
DRAGON-CHAN.
She draws some obscenely awesome badges (and other arts too!) and I wish I could give her lots of monies! I love the ones she made for Fossil and I last year!
She is taking badge preorders (for AC?) here:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1453975/
GO COMMISSION
MITSU.
She has such a cute, clean animated style! I keep wanting to commission her myself <3 She is taking preorders for AC badges of various styles as well:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1445114/
As for my own updates...
I will be updating soon. I need to convert some scans and finish up a couple things, and then there will be new uploads :)
I want to finish stuff so badly... I can't even express how much this is so. Hopefully I'll be able to sit down and concentrate long enough to power through some things after work tomorrow.

FA:United is just days away...
Posted 15 years agoI just worked six days in a row, and finally can relax a little on my day off today, right? Maybe. I'm being kidnapped for breakfast at Denny's and then... not sure what else the jaunt holds. When I get back, I've got to clean more of the apartment for pre-con/post-con, and GET SOME ART DONE. Also, I want to do laundry tonight. I miss having a washer and dryer in the same house :(
But yeah, the important stuff that you really want to know-- is probably the art progress.
I hope to finish Anora's sketch tonight, and Draganta's. I don't need them for the con, just want them done, since they're closest to completion. I hope to get MORE done, too, but I'm trying to be realistic. If anyone on my commission list IS going to FA:U, PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP and I'll do my best to hook that up too. I'm also going to be working on a few other things, and possibly some original arts to sell at the con, to help bolster whatever commissions I manage to do there. I expect to be very motivated at the con, under the influence of a certain powerhouse of con output, but it would still be nice to have some ready-to-go merchandise that isn't just old prints. I haven't had that in forever.
fossil will be there with me, doing tattoos in the dealer's room. If you are going to the con, and interested, contact him ASAP with info and stuff. He's already got some appointments, and the process is a lot faster if he can have your design finalized and stencils made before the con.

What does my art say about me? meme

What do you, as the audience, think that my art style says about me personally?
What type of feeling do you get from it, and what kind of feeling does that give you about me?
Not sure what kind of responses this will get, but that is the point of posting it :3

Commissions (new and old)
Posted 15 years agoA number of the commissions on my list are in some stage of being worked on. I hope to have a few done, approved, and posted in the next few days. The last thing I want to do is add more to the list, but right now I do not have much choice.
I'm working "full time" at the moment, but due to financial hardships over the summer and other decreased-income issues, I have a few problems that need to be taken care of urgently. Much of it is car-related.
Please be patient with me if I am already working on something for you, I will still be working on your commissions during this time. Stay tuned to my status list and email me if you have questions.
I know it is a difficult time for everyone, but if you were thinking of commissioning me for something, and have the means to do so, I will temporarily be open for just about any commission within reason:
3x4" color con badges
With clip or lanyard, horizontal or vertical. $30
Example, Example 2,Example 3
Deluxe cutout badges
With clip or lanyard, may be a little larger than 3x4" depending on the design. $45
Chibi
Cute child-like interpretations of your characters inked, and colored in marker, or digitally cel-shaded, your choice. They're a little larger than a typical conbadge, but no background. You may include a theme (such as a holiday) or a prop, within reason. Clean images, only, please! $30
One-character sketches
Pretty self-explanatory. One character, sketched, no background, no revisions unless I miss something painfully obvious. This will be a true sketch and may be a little rough, it is not going to be a refined pencil rendering. You can request a theme or prop. $15
Regular Pinup-style commissions
Starting with a one-character, no background piece, to more complicated images (in terms of background or extra characters). These will be priced on a case-by-case basis. You can choose from sketches, inks, marker, or digital color. Please email me for a quote!
Character Model Sheets
One character, Front and Back (or front 3/4, back 3/4 views so sides are visible too) with color and accessory detail, digital flat color - $100
This would include a basic layout with name and text descriptions as necessary (but most will just be shown).
Optional Add-ons:
Add a side view - $25
Add three facial expression sketches - $30
Add three colored facial expressions - $45
Add cell shading to the color - $15
Shipping Note!
Shipping is not included in the price of a commission. For badges and regular size commissions, it may be as low as $1 or $2 within the United States for first class mail, or $5 for priority. I can ship to just about anywhere that gets mail, but I'll have to check and see what it would cost.
Please EMAIL me if you are interested, and THANK YOU for reading.
...in the event that I get enough orders to cover what I need to, I WILL take this journal down, or at least put up a new one. I'm not looking to go CRAZY, after all... just need to make ends meet. With any luck, if this stuff gets sorted out, my paycheck should cover most things and I won't be forced to take commissions to make up the difference.

Hungry for tasty art
Posted 16 years agoHow can I watch people if they delete their accounts or change names without leaving breadcrumbs? Too many delicious artists are missed because I do not know how to find them ;_;
At least it's fun trying to ink Fossil's lineart. Updates of a more useful nature will come very soon.

Fossil/Scully Collaborative Commissions!
Posted 16 years agoWe're both diligently working on the other stuff we each owe, so don't worry! We just thought it would be fun to offer a limited number of collab pictures to help us catch up on our financial situation XD
Fossil and myself are opening spots for THREE (3) commissions, full color and ink, up to 2 characters each. Fossil does the initial sketch, I'll be doing cleanup and ink, and then he'll be adding delicious digital color, courtesy of Photoshop.
The two characters and what they are doing together is entirely up to you, as long as it's within reason. It can be clean, tame, sexy or downright nasty, don't be afraid to ask!
We DO reserve the right to veto any themes that we find uncomfortable or objectionable, so if you think your idea might be of concern, please contact us as soon as possible to inquire. Things like extremely detailed characters, or multiple bodyparts, which will extend the time it takes to complete the custom image, WILL cost extra, at our discretion.
The background of the picture will be very simple and based on what we feel will work best for the image (solid color, gradient, graphic element, vague setting like bedsheets or something). IF you want to request a specific or detailed background, Please be prepared to include a fee of $50 in ADDITION to the price.
If you'd like the 11X14" inks and a print or two mailed to you, that can be arranged, and/or we can email you a full-resolution JPG of the finished image. We may be able to offer larger prints of the final image as well.
The 3 openings are $120.00 each.
IMPORTANT- If you are interested in one of the three openings, please EMAIL your description to Fossil-at-JurassicBeauties-dot-com.
Fossil will let you know if you make the list, and we'll update the journals and our status lists with the appropriate info as we have it.

There are also TWO (2) additional spots for the same, one in FurBid, and one in FurBuy, already in progress, ending on Tuesday! If you want to try your luck at an auction, they're both starting at $100.00. You might very well be the only one to bid on it. :D

Since we're going to be working together, the commissions are bound to be done faster than usual, if only because we'll have extra reasons to be checking up on each other about progress.
Thanks for looking, and have fun!

Updates, 10$ Sketches, and Badges
Posted 16 years agoCurrently, I'm working on the sketch for Stego's commission, and I plan to ink the existing sketches for Knottyjames and possibly Raptor Clawford's commissions tonight.
I have been really good about not taking new commissions for quite awhile now... but I need to take some quick sketch commissions or badges to help make ends meet.
Please be patient with me if I am already working on something for you, I will still be working on your commissions during this time. Stay tuned to my status list and email me if you have questions.

Oh Photoshop....
Posted 16 years agoI love you and can't stand you. I don't know why I go on thinking I'm okay at digital color.
Or maybe I'm just very impatient.
When I sit for hours working on coloring an image, it just makes me want to marker it and get it over with 9_9
More updates soon.

To assert their greatness
While making them out to be
As untouchable as those you'd like to dethrone
What is it you see in them?
What narrow corridor of their lives do you describe
Peeking in their open window?
How well do you really know anyone
To judge their impact
Wishes, dreams, desires.
He knows his testimony is carefully scrutinized
Letting you hang around like all the others
Polite and friendly, conversive to a fault
Philosophical discourse is appreciated;
The record is tainted.
Hear what you want to hear
Pencil idle
Pencil flying
It all means something to hungry suspicion
Eager opportunists and contemplative minds.
To not feel alone
To feel important
To feel deliciously privy
Alienate those you idolize.
As if it matters.
Ask your own questions
Speak for yourself
And don't believe everything you read.
