I, along with plenty of friends and wonderful artists, made Furoticon into a groundbreaking game that changed what people thought was possible. While there were many stumbling blocks along the way, by the end of its run it was culturally relevant — not only in the furry fandom, but in mainstream boardgaming as well. Not only did Furoticon have the largest booth at Anthrocon, but its top-grossing convention ever was GenCon! Over 2,000,000 physical Furoticon cards were created in the game's lifetime.
For 10 years, Furoticon was an indomitable force of body positivity and sex positivity in a closed-minded world. We helped a lot of people see themselves finally represented in a game. Unexpectedly, playing a game with a bunch of naked furries on the cards is a socially disarming experience, allowing friends and strangers alike to discuss topics they'd feel repressed to bring up in any other situation. In a way, it allowed players to be themselves, dropping the performative shields they otherwise needed for protection while navigating social situations.
So, where did all the money go? Much of it was reinvested in the artists who made Furoticon possible. At its heart, Furoticon was always about supporting the artists. At its height, the budget for Furoticon artists was higher than some of the most popular card games of the time. We know this, because artists who had previously worked for large corporations mentioned that the pay for their work on Furoticon was significantly higher than what they earned elsewhere. With the prevalence of AI in boardgaming these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it were even more imbalanced today.
The rest of the money went to keeping the core team fed and housed. The remaining profits were spent on getting Furoticon Online launched. However, the developers of Furoticon Online delivered a non-functional product and encrypted it behind their proprietary software, so even with the source code in hand, there was nothing we could do to fix it into a working game.

So, what am I doing with my life now? I'm still making games. I can't stop making games. The only difference is that they're no longer adult-rated. Spending 10 years of my life and over a million dollars towards the creation of furry porn is a lot for one person, don't you think?
I'll leave you all with a few nuggets of advice:
- Making a good game takes ten times as much effort and time as you think it does. There are plenty of ways to cash in while making slop, but making something that you can take personal pride in takes dedication.
- Avoid dark patterns in your games. Your players will be much happier.
- Listen to the advice of others, especially about the decisions you vehemently oppose out of tradition or fear of change. Their advice is probably right.
- Pay people instead of mega-corporations as often as you can.

[FUROTICON] Furry Connection North was awesome!
Posted 12 years agoFurry Connection North is one of my favorite conventions, even though this year I barely got any free time. As soon as I arrived, I had to set up my dealer table ASAP, because people wanted Furoticon cards!
When the dealer room closed, I had a few hours to relax, but then it was right back up again for the first Furoticon tournament! We ran a Beginner tournament, where each player gets a starter deck, then they play against other players, and win prizes. They also get to keep the deck!

Many factors that would be expected to matter -- family line, mental prowess, size, success -- never affected the way the power was passed down. When a Shaman's power comes to fruition, they are given a simple corded necklace that is said to help shape and focus their power. These are in honor of the necklaces that the Drachin themselves are said to wear to do the same task.

We know there were a few people who weren't able to get their donation through, even with the extended collection period -- if you are one of those people, please email Seppel at seppelker [at] gmail [dot] com with your Offbeatr username and reward level information so you can find out what that means for you.
We're getting ready to start posting surveys for each of the reward levels so we can get information collection started. One big thing we would like to address are the digital accounts that everyone received as part of every reward level:

Those accounts will be integrated into Furoticon Online come release next year, and will be tied to the rewards you've pledged for. It's also the best way to make sure that you get the username you want!

Now we wait! Now that the project has reached its deadline, Offbeatr is going to go through and start processing credit cards for everyone who pledged. Cards that are successfully processed will receive a confirmation email, so keep your eyes on your Inbox!
You will also receive an email if your card has been declined -- it could be declined for several reasons, including the issue that we posted about yesterday involving an international charge. The email will tell you that you will need to input a new credit card in order to keep your pledge -- if all you needed to do is call your bank in order to approve the charge, then you can use the same credit card again.
In the event that you need to enter in a new card to keep your pledge, you will have 3 days to comply. After the third day, your pledge will be cancelled.
Dropping Total?!
The total money raised on the Campaign page has dropped due to credit cards being declined. That total will go back up as people reconfirm their pledges!
What does this mean for Furoticon?
After that 3rd day (or sooner!), all credit cards will have been processed, and we'll be sitting on our final total. Don't worry, the stretch goals have all been achieved and are good to go -- we got all the way up to Foxes!

We will be running things a little differently this year -- we will be sending out weekly invitations for players to playtest. We've noticed that the majority of playtesters burn out after three weeks, so in an effort to keep the playtesting team going strong for the full six weeks, playtesters will be invited on three dates: November 2nd, 9th, and 16th.

Posted 13 years agoAs all of you have probably heard through the grapevine, Furoticon Online has been a very real project that we have been considering and planning out over the past year or so.
Well, now is the time to really push to make it a reality. My team and I have been working hard for the past two months to get this project off the ground, and we're finally ready to get your eyes on it!

OffBeatr is like Kickstarter, but for Adult projects! We're happy to be able to take part in crowdfunding site that finally touches on a market that's near and dear to our hearts.
When it comes to Furoticon Online, should we translate a card game to an online game? Should we just create a simple playmat and make you pretend like you’re playing with real cards?
NO! We will bring EVERY character to life with animated pixel art! Sukouri, the sexy squirrel girl, will drop her robe as she enters bed! Arn, the dominant wolf, will thrust powerfully into Kanette, the lusty otter girl! And Boy Toy, the effeminate college student, will get on his hands and knees while Grizzwald, the large grizzly bear, takes him from behind! (Worried that you might see some action you’re not interested in? Hide all actions with the click of a button, and play away!)
