My 2017 resolution, aside from trying to draw more, is to work on backgrounds and scenery in my paintings.

So I have been lurking around FA for a while but not really posting and tbh I miss probably 9/10 of everything I follow. I can hardly keep up with my own friend's art so I just check their profiles once in a while to see what's up.
I have a lot of stuff I still need to do, although mostly for friends, and I am VERY VERY grateful for their patience with me.

Right now, I am probably not going to be able to get back into being active for a while. Now the personal stuff...

Truth is, my dad lost his job and I know this happens to people a lot but it's a HUGE loss of money for us because he is an engineer. So I am picking up more hours and helping my family pay bills as well as going to school every day. I get home around 10 most nights and I never have a free weekend because I work.

I have some amazing supportive friends though who have already offered to help me out in some ways and I just love love love them to bits. I really appreciate everything everyone has done for me here and in other places.

Er I don't know what else to say except I'm still alive and kicking but I probably won't be around much. Also if push comes to shove, I may start reselling some of my adopts.

Draw-Your-Own-Character Art Contest

What is it?

Hey guys, so I was thinking of ways to tie the community together because I love seeing positive energy and social relations, and I thought: why not an art contest? I’m not quite sure how well this will work out, but I wanted to make it something like one of those draw to adopts, except you are drawing your OWN character and the prize is free art from me! And even if you don’t win a prize, you drew your own adopt for yourself so there is no loss. This will kind of be an experiment, but if it has a good turnout I would love to try it again!

Also this is kind of a celebration for finishing this semester and a thank you to all of my followers for the long year and supporting me for my trip earlier this year!

So basically:
• This is a Draw-Your-Own-Character Contest, so you can pick a character of yours and draw it to enter the contest!
• There will be a theme that you can use as inspiration for your art piece.
• I will judge the entries based on the theme and how much effort is put into the piece.
• I am offering prizes (free art) to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners on a tier basis (so first place can chose which tier they want, and then second place, and then third place gets whatever is left over).
• The contest will be open for 2 weeks for submissions and after 2 weeks I will go through the submissions and pick the winners.

• Your character must be legit and not a stolen character! So you can draw one of your adopts as long as it is rightfully yours. You may draw your own character or you may draw a friend’s but make sure you get their permission first!
• You must fit the theme! The theme is pretty vague, and you can probably do anything as long as you reason out why you drew what you did in the comments if it isn’t as obvious.
• Your submission must be turned in before the end of the two weeks, I won’t take any late submissions no matter the excuse.
• You can literally submit ANY kind of drawing, but the more effort you put into it, the more chances you have at winning.

Also is it weird to have a male mascot but you identify as a female? I just really like my lion.......

I've been very frustrated with my art lately especially with anatomy and it's making me incapable of finishing my works without just nuking them.

So I was wondering how you guys push yourself to do commissions when you're having bad art days/weeks.
That and how you keep yourself motivated to get through an overwhelming amount without stressing out or burning out?
I finally finished my last finals and I'm home so I was working on commissions but none of them are turnin out well and I think I'm having a bad art streak and I want to get these done but I also want to make sure I like them so it's my best effort/art. Cries I'm really stuck in a rut right now if anyone has tips.
I'm mainly having troubles with getting the poses and initial sketch to look decent cause they all look horrible to me and I've tried 4 different commissions already. OTL

I’ve been thinking for a while that lately I’ve been doing too much art for ‘money’ rather than the enjoyment of it. It’s funny that I decide all this around the end of the year even though I didn’t intend for it to be like some ‘New Year’s Resolution,’ but I guess it’s good to start a new year fresh.
I have a lot to say below, so please take your time to read cause it involves both future commissions and future adoptables by me.

I’ve always been someone who draws for myself and myself alone, but this year I was in a huge push for money for my Australia school trip. I took on A LOT of commissions and did a few adopts, which gave me a lot of stress on top of all my school work. I’ve done less and less art for myself and of my own OCs than ever and I miss drawing for myself. However, I do love to draw for others and the commissions are actually a lot of fun, especially when I get really gorgeous characters to draw. And tbh commissions have helped me improve on my art a lot this year too, like I’ve come a long way from commissions I did at the beginning of the year to the ones I’ve done lately. But I have decided that I’m going to change the way I do things in the future for the sake of myself and for others who are interested in my art!

C O M M I S S I O N S

1.) I have decided that I am, firstly, closing commissions and will only be taking commissions by journal. ACTUALLY my plan is that I will only take commissions while I stream, so that the person can watch them as well as have it done the same day they pay for it. This probably means I will take less commissions, but it gives me less stress about doing commissions and I think people would appreciate how fast they would be finished. However they would probably be first come first serve unless I have preplanned commission dates where I’ll stream them…

2.) Other than in-stream commissions, I will still offer YCH auctions because they are a lot of fun to do and it’s probably the only time I’ll actually draw nsfw commissions from now on. I might have dates to stream those, but if I only do one a month I think I can finish them without a lot of stress.

I will finish all the current commissions I have, unless there are people who would like refunds cause I totally understand;; I might actually refund a few if I can’t finish most of them before Christmas. I’m terribly sorry for my slowness.

A D O P T A B L E S

This is probably the biggest change and of most interest to people, especially friends.

1. ) I am making all of my species open to close friends and those I give permission to only. This means that anyone who I give permission to can make their own characters from any/all of my species. I will make a list of people who are approved to make their own, tbh it’ll probably mainly be the people who are mutually following me on twitter. If you are not sure or just want to confirm if you are allowed to make one, you can send me a note or something.
My only rule is that if you make your own and decide you don’t want it anymore, you cannot trade it to people who are not on my list! These are free for friends to make, but if you do not want it anymore I will take it or you can offer it to other friends of mine as a gift (since we’re all pretty mutual friends).

2.) I will not be making batches to sell anymore, but instead focus on more individual designs with a lot of effort. I don’t want my adopts to be something I do for money anymore and I don’t want to do bases and stuff. I want to make adopts that are really high quality and I’m PROUD of them, so much so that I want to keep them for myself. This means that they will probably be full body, painted, and might even have a little extra art to them. I want to try different things other than auctions or flat prices, like I think draw to adopt would be a lot of fun or just free raffles when I’m in the mood. Along with this, I am going to rework an adoptable policy that will reflect what I’m trying to accomplish (stated below).

TOO CLARIFY THIS, my adopts are now closed to everyone but my friends. Any of my adopts that are already out there are free to roam around and you may do whatever you please with them. They are yours to keep! But future ones will not be open to public as often, if at all.

Why have I decided this?
To put it simply, I do not have the confidence in my designs or the motivation to do many, especially in batches. I want to work on improving my art over making money from adopts. What I want from my adopts is for people to see the ART of it and the design second and be like , WOW that is a really nice adopt, rather than for the species or for the brand name. I’m not interested in the money or the name behind adopts, I just want people to get a design I’m proud of.

Another reason is that I really do like the world of adoptables, but there are a few things in the community that really turn me off from adopts. I don’t want my adopt to be used as trade fodder or bought on a whim only to be sold the next day. I know a lot of people don’t like this and find it frustrating, but I am going to try my hardest to actually avoid it and find a solution for myself. People may or may not agree with my methods, but I’m going to do what I feel most comfortable with.

Toyhou.se is new website in alpha that is rapidly growing in popularity, which is really great, especially for the creators!
However, the website is in alpha and the only way to join is by getting an invite code, which premium users have.
Lately people have been trading or selling the invite codes to people, especially on DA, and I want to share my personal opinions about it.

I do not think that trading or buying an invite code from someone is the best idea.
Premium users get 2 invite codes every week. To become a premium user for one month is $5, 3 months is $10, and so on....
I have no idea how much people are paying for these invite codes, but I personally do not think it is worth it.

It is probably best to just wait until invites travel around by friends or wait until it opens up for people to join.
You do not make a profit from joining this website, unless of course you turn around and sell off invite codes yourself and that's another story.... ):

The site is really cool and I totally support the creators, but the way it's starting is kind of iffy to me and I don't want this to ruin a lot of people's experience with this site.
At least if anything please be smart about what you are purchasing!! If you are okay with buying it then you have the right to do so.

Appearance & Physiology
General
↘ Mantas have human characteristics, but their bodies are covered in very thin, fine fur, excluding their tails, horns, and wings. They have two barbs on each limb; two on each forearm and two on the back of each calf.
↘ There are two areas where the fur is thicker and fluffier than the rest of the body; along the shoulders, curving around the back of the neck, and around the lower back region, surrounding the tail. The fluff can be shaved off, usually for those that wish to look more threatening. Some, although not as common, do not grow fluff at all.
↘ Each have two horns on their heads. There is no set size or length, but the color of the horns always matches the color of the tail.
↘ Mantas reach maturity at about 10 years old and live up to their fifties.

Tails
↘ Manta tails are shaped like scorpion tails and contain venom, making the tails their main weapon and defense mechanism.
Their tails can curl up and tuck into the fluff at the base of the tail. This is usually done to seem less threatening or as a passive behavior.
↘ Each tail has various barbs on them along the tail. The barbs are extra storage sacs for their venom, although they can’t be used to inject the venom. The more barbs present, the more venom the tail can contain. This also usually directly correlates with how lethal their stings are.

Venom
↘ Each Manta has a unique venom, but unless they exert a decent amount, it can be cured with regular remedies. Otherwise a large dose of the venom can be lethal unless cured using part of the venom to create an antidote.
↘ Some venoms are similar enough that a different manta can use their venoms to make a remedy, but the effects are much slower and the person will stay sick longer.
↘ Mantas are typically resistant to other Manta venom, unless injected with a very large dose or stung by a winged Manta.
There are two types of venom: Paralysis or Lethal. Paralysis will only paralyze an opponent, for how long varies depending on the amount injected. Lethal is venom that makes people sick and can have different effects like nausea, allergic reactions, hallucinations, heightened senses, or death.

Wings
↘ Wings are rare traits for Mantas and because of this, winged Mantas are seen as almost royalty and they fall under the elite or top class of the hierarchy. Wings also typically resemble a stronger venom.
↘ Wings vary in size, but most are too small to allow flight. Wings that are large enough to allow flight can have negative effects while or after flight. The bodies are not made for flight and thus flying can put strain on their backs and cause immense pain if used too often.

Mutations
↘ Some Mantas produce an excess amount of venom and the tails cannot contain it all or do not have enough barbs for extra storage. This causes negative effects on the body and the venom starts to escape the tail and run through their bodies. Typically they are immune to their own venom, but constant venom in the body will cause unease and irritation as well as a dark or “blood shot” sclera. This mutation is most typically known as “blood shot” for the eyes.
↘ Mutations in horns can cause Mantas to have an extra set of horns or have no horns at all. This mutation is not harmful and is a little more common than the other mutations.
↘ Albinism is a rare mutation that is carried on from birth where color never starts to appear after being a year old. Albinism is defined by all white hair (body and head) and a white tail.
↘ The rarest of mutations are mutations dealing with the tail. Sometimes a tail mutation can cause for a “nub” Manta, which is what a Manta lacking a stinger is called. Another form of a “nub” is that a stinger is present, but the tail does not produce venom and therefore is harmless. Having an extra tail is extremely rare, where those born with them usually die at birth from the large amount of venom produced.

Gender Dimorphism
↘ Female Mantas may have breasts but they are typically not very large. The same applies for their hips. Male Mantas can be as slim as females or they can also be bulkier, but they are typically built proportionately to their height.
↘ Genders are generally defined by their heights. Female Mantas are much shorter in comparison to the males, averaging at about 4’10” and very rarely exceeding 5’4”. Male Mantas have a much larger range for heights, the shortest being a female’s height and the tallest can reach up to 7 feet.

Habitat
Diet
↘ Mantas are omnivores, but they generally lean more towards carnivores. They like to eat meat of any kind, but some prefer certain types of meat over others. For food that isn’t meat, they typically eat any kind of vegetation; even poisonous plants are edible and will not harm them.
↘ They digest food very slowly, so meat fills them up easily. Also, they typically do not eat large portions and can go for an entire week on one meal. Vegetation isn’t as filling as meat, so they may eat it a few times a week just to feel full if they prefer not to eat meat.
↘ Mantas drink water regularly to stay hydrated and to dilute any venom in their veins. They typically do not drink things other than water but may dabble in some wines or juices; most hate milk.

Climate
↘ Mantas live in hot climates and do not fare well in cold climates. Their fur is too thin to withstand extreme cold for long periods of time and they could possibly die. Moderate climates are bearable, but not something sought out for.
↘ Water is a necessity and they typically like to live or travel near bodies of waters. If they travel in areas with little water, they must make sure to bring water with them.

Behavior & Culture
Social Life
↘ The Manta society is predominantly male, where the male to female ratio is 3:1. Due to this, the females are highly respected and sought out for. They are neither patriarchal nor matriarchal, but decisions are usually left to the females, when present, as a way to get on good graces.
↘ They are proud creatures by nature, taking pride in whatever occupation or hobbies they have. They may not personally like another Manta, but in the presence of a non-Mantazahr species, they will be respectful and get along. They are very cooperative with each other for almost patriotic reasons.
↘ Mantas get along with one another fairly well and are never seen disputing by outside parties. They tend to live or travel with at least one of their kind, but it is not uncommon for strays. More often than not, they will live in villages inhabited with multiple Mantas for social interactions and breeding.
↘ They also typically get along well with other land species, especially mammals and arachnids—although they sometimes like to prey on them. However, Mantas are not very fond of avian species, which is caused by envy and sometimes just rivalry.
They are most found in the wild and free roaming and are rarely ever house pets or slaves. If one has been enslaved, it is most likely their venom has been removed for less resistance.

Hierarchy
↘ Size has no relevance to rank. Although size may be an intimidation factor towards other species, within their own species, Mantas do not pay much attention to size.
↘ There are only two ranks within the society; commoners and elite. The only difference between the two are that the elite are winged Mantas and are seen as more prestige and blessed. Elite tend to be more potent in their venom and can affect other commoners with it as well.
↘ The very top of the ranks, even within the elite, are winged females and Mantas that have large enough wings for flight. Those that can fly are usually leaders of a pack of Mantas and breed with multiple others.

Courtship
↘ The most important aspect of courtship for Mantas is dancing; they display their interest in another individual by asking for a dance or permission to dance for them. A dance is the best way to impress a potential mate.
↘ Dancing is seen as one of the most sensual displays of affection for Mantas and asking for a dance is the same as directly telling someone they wish to mate with them. Although sensual, there is not much contact within the actual dance.
↘ Dancing for Mantas are very cultural and passed down their lineage. The dances involve light and decisive movements, either rapid or slow, with many arm motions and body twirling. (Examples (each link is a different type of dance): yip, yip, hooray, festivals)
↘ Dancing can also be recreational, but those that dance without a particular “target” are seen as promiscuous and lack fidelity.
↘ The only time dancing is socially accepted for non-mating intentions, is for celebrations, where Mantas can enjoy dancing with multiple parties. Although, most like to primarily dance with their mate or potential mate.

Mating
↘ Manta females typically mate with at least three different individuals in their lifetime to produce more—and diverse—offspring for species preservation. However, this does not always mean they are promiscuous, but rather they have one “soul mate” but the soul mate allows for them to mate with others.
↘ Manta offspring come in litters of two. They may be twins, but more often than not they are just siblings and not twins. The normal pregnancy period is 4-5 months; the babies (about the size of two hands) are born albino and do not start to show color until about a year old.
↘ Females are rarer and sought out for preservation of the species, but otherwise genders do not play large roles in mating. In other words, sexual orientation does not matter, especially since most will mate with either sex.
↘ It is actually more common for males to be life partners since there are more males than females. Even if a male has another male soul mate, they may still breed with a female manta.
↘ Crossbreeding is possible, but not very common, but offspring produced from crossbreeding have a higher chance for mutations and NONE of the offspring produce venom.
