If you ever happen to have to clean a popcorn machine...
Posted 13 years agomake sure you double-check that the kettle is off, lest your hand end up like this:
http://i49.tinypic.com/zycxv6.jpg
Yep, them's 2nd degree burns under those bandages.
A coworker of mine was a bit careless. Just after I came in for a third shift, in the hour before the doors get locked before I get left there by myself, he decided to take it upon himself to clean out the popcorn machine (which is a third shift job, IE one of my nightly duties). Well, he turned off the warmer light that keeps the popcorn warm, but for some reason turned on the kettle. If you're familiar with a popcorn machine, then you know the kettle should only ever be on for like, the two minutes it takes to make popcorn, and isn't something that should ever just be idly running.
A few hours into my shift, I saw the the kettle was closed and went to check to see if the inside still needed to be wiped out. I couldn't hear the machine running over the incredibly loud slushie machine kicking on. I put my hand up to open it up and, well, it was rather hot.
So yeah, I managed to burn the crap out of my hand, had to go through a ton of injury report paperwork, go see a Meijer-approved doctor, all that good stuff.
It's not too bad though. Got some kind of special burn ointment from the drug store, I've just gotta re-apply and rebandage it twice a day for a week or so and it should clear up. Might be a scar or two, but it wouldn't be the first scar I've ever had on my hand.
Speaking of third shifts, the other person who works third shifts at the gas station broke her foot, so I've been on five third shifts a week for a while and will be for the next several weeks or so. It's been wreaking havoc on my sleep cycle (not that I had much of one to begin with)

FCN! I shall be there!
Posted 13 years agoHoly hell, I haven't been very active here lately at all. I've just been so ridiculously busy between work and classes =.=
I'll be at FCN this weekend though! I'm sure it will be all kinds of fun! =D
See that picture of me on my profile ID? Well, I'll look like that, but with longer hair. Longer hair that will also be blonde. Also, I'll have bright red sunglasses (like I usually do in art). I should be pretty hard to miss if you're looking. Also also, I'll have a ton of glowsticks on Saturday night. When I say a ton, I mean like around 200.
So, if you're there, come talk to me! Hang out with me even! I like doing those things =3

Yeaaaaah, I don't care if her grasp of the English language isn't the best, I think it's pretty unlikely some woman would come across my FA account and think "I bet that's the perfect man for me."

I'm gonna be at Ohayocon in Columbus this weekend. I'll be in and out of cosplay, the two I'm gonna be taking there are Wayward Vagabond (Homestuck) and Yu Narukami (Persona 4). Let me know if any of you are gonna be there and wanna hang or something.

Settle in, 'cause this might be a long one.
November's always been a very melancholy month. I mean, I get all pumped through October for Halloween/Youmacon, and then from there, November's just kind of the road block in between that and the Holiday season proper. It's kind of funny that my birthday happens to be right smack in the middle of it (was the 16th for the curious), but when I think about it, that really kind of adds to the melancholy for reasons I won't go into.
It kicks off with Halloween gone/post-con depression from Youmacon, then there's a furry con relatively close to me that I keep wanting to go to but missing out on (usually because Youmacon sucks up all my funds, this year because I couldn't get the days off work) for the past several years, and it's also when things start to get really cold (I hate the cold) and it gets really dark early. Earlier in the month it's rainy, and then it usually starts to get snowy around the second half. The first snowfall is a depressing enough moment on it's own because I hate snow. Living in Michigan makes it even worse because through November, the whether can never decide what it wants to do. It's been at the worst I've seen it this year, going from mid-fifties one day to below freezing the next. And of course, the only consistency through the indecisive weather is that it will be cold, wet, and gray. That is almost always a constant. Eventually, winter will start to kick in around Thanksgiving (usually, it was in the forties today, so this year could be the anomaly), but without the one redeeming quality of having the holidays or the excitement of a new year to perk things up a bit.
I mostly just float through November hoping to make it past Thanksgiving and Black Friday to get to the Holiday season proper (Black Friday doesn't count, it's just a clusterfuck and I avoid it like the plague). I love Christmas, and I really just wish I could jump right to December after Youmacon, instead of having to endure November, the shitty downtime in between two things I love.
But enough of that noise, things have been generally okay for me. Still not all the way settled into the new apartment, but getting there. Work is a little taxing, not because of having to work 40 hours, but because it's divided up between three shifts of 3:30PM - 12AM and two shifts of 11PM-7AM, which messes with my sleep cycle a bit. It's not too bad though, considering my sleep schedule has always been pretty messed up though, and the job itself isn't hard, I'm just a little worn out by it. All in all though, I'm adjusting alright. I'm starting to get into a normal routine, which I never thought I'd welcome, but it feels good to have some stability for a change.
Of course, it would've been nice if my car didn't decide to die in the Meijer parking lot last night. Usually I call AAA for a jump, but turns out that AAA had expired a month earlier than I thought, so I had to have a friend come out and jump me, but it turned out he had bad cables. I bought a jump starter thing for $30, but it didn't come charged (I figured) so I had to catch a ride home and then back to work today. The battery thing gave it a bit of juice, but not enough to get it going. I did end up renewing AAA though, so they came and jumped it. The great thing is though, when I finally got it up and running, there's a "no fuse" indicator on my display, and my interior lights, remote start and lock, radio and CD player, automatic lock, and power windows all didn't work.
So now I have to have that looked at, and I'm just really hoping it'll be an easy electrical fix and I won't have to pay through the nose for it. Still though, it's such a downer, it just seems like every time I get to a level of contentness, something comes along to try and ruin it.
Oh, and since I've posted about my ear before, I may as well mention that I did get out to a specialist, seems the hearing in that ear is rapidly declining and I'll prolly need a hearing aid within the next ten years for it. That kinda sucks, but I'm trying not to make a big thing of it. Still though, I guess it could be considered a significant life event, so I guess it's worth noting.
November has been very good for one thing this year though, and that's been games. I passed on Skyrim because I didn't like Oblivion too much, but I picked up Modern Warfare 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
Modern Warfare 3 has of course already been beaten, but no one's buying that game for the single player. The plot of the campaign is as incomprehensible as ever, but I mean, it's still a fun FPS, so it's a good way to kill some time. Wish they could've made it a bit longer than MW2, but like I said, no one's buying it for the single player. I shouldn't have to tell you that the multiplayer is really good if you like that kind of thing. I shouldn't, but I will. It's very good.
ACR I haven't played too much of yet. Brotherhood was excellent both in story mode and in the multiplayer. I've only played the MP for a few hours, but it definitely seemed like they did a good job improving on it to make it even better. The new modes are cool, though I wish some more of the characters from the MP in Brotherhood returned, but that's a pretty minor gripe. The campaign has been rather fun and rather promising so far. It's weird seeing Ezio so old, but he's still as deadly as ever, so at least his age isn't hindering him any. It does get a little creepy when he starts to hit on really young women though. Anyway, one thing the series has been really good at so far is updating the gameplay. In each game, they introduce a new mechanic that allows you to overcome obstacles a little easier, which keeps the gameplay of the series from going stagnant. Of course, in order to balance it out, they must introduce new challenges and up the difficulty a bit to keep things from being a cakewalk, without seeming like they're reaching or relying on fake difficulty. Ubisoft has been really good about this so far, and though I haven't played enough of ACR to say with any kind of certainty, it seems like they've done just as good a job this time around.
Skyward Sword has had a lot of critical acclaim, but I dunno, I was really not feeling it when I played through the first few hours. There are a few things about it that really bug me. The first is that, though it's a Japanese series, it's always had this sort of European legend feeling to it. In Skyward Sword's intro, the narrative just felt incredibly Japanese. In fact, to me, it felt like it could really just be any anime or an intro to any ol' JRPG. One of the most popular conventions of Shounen series is to take the conventions and feel of a high school drama but adapt it to fit a fantasy setting, and up the action a lot. And let me tell you, right from the beginning of Skyward Sword, all those conventions are there. There's the school (the Knight Academy) the easy-going protagonist (Link), the childhood best friend who doubles as a love interest (Zelda), the bully and his cronies (Groose and co.), the well-meaning but incompetent classmate (can't remember his name), the know-it-all classmate (another name I can't remember), and they even dug straight into the cliche of having the bully have a crush on the main character's love interest. I mean, for god's sake, the plot of the entire intro revolves around this race in which Link and Groose are the top contenders, and of course Groose tries to sabotage Link and Zelda helps him recover and yadda yadda yadda we've seen this plot a million times before.
Then of course, we have the very JRPG-ish element of having to play a minigame before the game proper begins that is either un-losable, very hard to lose, and that if the main character can lose for good, it's usually meant to happen and also usually scripted after the player themselves wins or comes close to winning.
Also I'm really tired of floating continents, they're starting to get really overdone in Japanese games.
The other big thing about it that bugs me is that it seems like it can't decide how it wants to present itself. Zelda has sort of split itself into two separate ways of presenting itself (most evident in the diverging art styles). There's the more cartoony style that developed with Wind Waker, typically with cell-shaded graphics and toonier characters and environments. Then there's the more, I guess you could call it "realistic" style that I would say started with the original 3D installments and grew into how Twilight Princess looked, with more realistic-looking environments and characters (even with the less-humanoid races).
Skyward Sword kind of seems caught between the two, and it puts me off a bit. Overall, the presentation leans more toward the "realistic" side, but gets derailed by some very cartoony-looking characters and setting elements, and they just seem really out-of-place. Moreover, the cartoony elements seem to have sunk into the plot. I mean, Zelda games always have a light-hearded, silly side to them that is part of their charm, but it's not played for quite the same effect in this one, it seems to me.
There's a few other minor things here and there that nag at me too, like I don't like that Link just starts out as the chosen one, instead of sort of coming into his destiny somewhat of his own accord.
And then there's one thing I'm a bit conflicted on. I noticed that in town, you couldn't smash random pots. Also, when I tried to raid the cupboards and chests of other people's houses in the starting town, the game scolded me and I couldn't. Now, on the one hand, I guess props to Nintendo for fixing what could be considered a gameplay flaw that has plagued the series for ages, but on the other hand, some of those enduring older game cliches are a big source of charm for long-running game series, and my first reaction to the changes was "What? THIS IS NOT ZELDA."
As I said though, these are first impressions. I only played through the beginning, and I'm hoping things pick up when I really get into the swing of things. Gameplay is pretty decent, the normal movement is just a touch wonky, but the combat is pretty neat and a lot of fun. The flight controls for the loftwing were a bit difficult though.
Moving away from games though, I did mention Youmacon, and I would like to say that it was an absolute blast this year. I cosplayed WV from Homestuck, and I really like how it turned out. If anyone's interested in seeing pictures, shoot me a comment, I'll link ya some good ones.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's all. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Lots of updates!
Posted 14 years agoSO! I mentioned I had a job, and it's been going pretty well. The 8-hour shifts and irregular hours run me a little ragged, but the paychecks are nice. Plus, my manager is really good about letting you get time off, I didn't have any problem scheduling weekends off for Youmacon and MFF (yes, things are looking good for going, just gotta find a room yet).
Speaking of Youmacon, it's this weekend! I'm so pumped, you guys have no idea.
Also, today, I just signed the lease for my apartment and am all set to move in, working on moving some of my stuff in as soon as I close my computer. For a few hours at least, I gotta work at 3:30.
Wanted to get off a few quick things before I close this journal out though:
1.) The Persona 4 anime has bee debuting on AnimeNetwork.com and it's really freaking good. They've been doing such an amazing job with it, it's been handled expertly. Everything about the anime just oozes the style of the game in the best ways possible. On the flipside though, they also do a great job of transitioning the plot, characters, and setting from game to anime, so that it's still engaging to watchers who never played the game (this coming from my few friends who are watching the anime but haven't played P4). New episodes debut on the AN website every Thursday, the same day they debut in Japan, which is really nice.
2.) Mylo Xyloto is also really freaking good. I was a little worried that Coldplay wouldn't make something that would live up to Viva la Vida (in my mind anyway, since Viva is my favourite album), but holy crap did they deliver. It's both less and more adventurous than Viva, it's a bit more down-to-earth in exchange for some of the grandeur they went for in Viva's tracks, but they play around with some new style elements and experiment with a lot of lighter synths, and I think the results are just fantastic. Will it replace Viva as my favourite album? Dunno yet. I'd have to listen to it more to decide that. But it's certainly a contender. On a sad note, Chris Martin said it might be their last album, which is really god damn depressing =.=
3.) Going back to P4, if you're a fan, Never More ~Reincarnation: Persona 4~ came out not too long ago (the Persona 4 soundtrack remix album), and it's got a lot of really cool tracks on it. If you liked the P4 soundtrack, it's worth a download.
4.) Homestuck fans, HOW EPIC WAS THE END OF ACT 5? JEGUS CHRIST, IT JUST GETS BETTER THE MORE AND MORE I WATCH IT. UGH.
Sorry this was so hastily written, but now I gotta jet and move stuff! That's all for now =3

That's all for now =3
NEW COLDPLAY ALBUM TOMORROW! Also, tagged for this thing
Posted 14 years agoSo yeah, Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay's fifth studio album comes out in North America tomorrow! Also, the day after that is Homestuck's End of Act 5 flash, supposedly the biggest and best one to date. The day following that is when Atlus releases the Persona 4 Reincarnation remix album. It's gonna be a gooooood week.
Also,
Gojithefox tagged me for this question thing I guess. I'm gonna majorly break the rules by just answering and not do the rest, 'cause I'm too hyped up on excitement to think of any decent questions. That, and I'm lazy.
1) What game are you most looking forward to playing in the next few years?
If I had to pick one, Persona 5. Also up there are Persona 4 The Golden, Beyond Good & Evil 2 (if it ever gets fucking released), Modern Warfare 3, among others.
2) What would you eat for your last meal?
Something with a lot of seafood. Lobster, crab, shrimp, and oysters would be ideal.
3) Do you sleep on the left, right or center of your bed?
Well, I've always had a twin, so it's pretty hard to sleep on one area, considering one person takes up the whole bed. Plus, I roll a bit. If I'm sharing a bed with someone, I usually just pick whatever side they don't X3
4) Which messenger program do you like the best, and why?
Digsby, been using it for almost two years now. I haven't had too many problems with it, bug fixes are really quick and they respond to bug reports usually the day they're submitted. It's got lots of practical features and customization options, it can be really flashy like most of the standard messenger programs nowadays, but it can also be set to a bit more minimalist layout, like I prefer. Plus, I can link facebook, twitter, and all my email accounts into it and manage everything from one window.
5) What do you hope to do as a career?
Before college, what I wanted to do most was be a stand-up comedian. The dream is still there, but it's been mostly buried under schoolwork at this point. That actually reminds me, I should really put some more routines together and try to perform some more now and again. I would also really like to be an architect, and that's what I go to school for. I would really like to design houses more than buildings, ideally.
6) If you were in a fight, would you prefer punching or kicking your opponent?
I'm a pacifist, so neither =P
7) What's your favorite flavor of Ice Cream?
Blue Moon. I mean REAL Blue Moon. Some ice cream places/distributors sell Blue Moon ice cream that's really just vanilla with a blue colouring. Real Blue Moon is supposed to be almond flavoured, and tastes kinda like marzipan. Other favourites are Pistachio and Cake Batter.
8) What do you want for Christmas
Well, some of my friends back from the Kalamazoo area would always have a Christmas get-together that I've gone to the past several years, and I'd really like to go to that once more. Christmas Eve, I want to go out to Chinese with my dad like we do every year (it's a tradition), and spending Christmas Day with my dad and his girlfriend at their place would be really nice.
9) Can you cook, and what's your favorite dish to cook if applicable?
Yes! I have since I was fourteen! My favourite thing to cook is Dijon Chicken Parmesan. It's ludicrously simple and always comes out delicious.
10) Have you been on a date before, and did you enjoy it?
On a couple occasions, and they have always been pretty nice.
11) What's your favorite drink or soda?
I really like Iced Coffee, anything with Chai is usually good too. Also, Instant Breakfast is seriously one of the most delicious drink mixes you can get at a grocery store. As far as pop goes, Cream Soda is definitely my favourite, but I don't drink a lot of pop in general.

This guy on Twitter isn't me
Posted 14 years agoThe Twitter account ImAGayTigerRawr (I would suggest not checking his page because not only is it VERY NSFW, it's a little on the disturbing side) has been using artwork that I commissioned and paid for (without permission) and has in his bio "The sexier side of a certain gay tiger."
On the off-chance that anyone has run across his page and thought that it was me, I would like to point out that he IS NOT me. I know it's probably not very likely that there was any confusion to that end, but I would just like to make sure that I'm not misrepresented, considering the tiger character in that piece as well as the commission itself are both attributed to me in the artist's gallery and my own here on FA.
I only have one single Twitter account, and it's the one I posted in a journal not too long ago (and is also on my user page): CloudyObsession. It's relatively work-safe, aside from occasional instances of foul language, and I will always denote any posts that deviate into NSFW territory.
Thanks.

Posted 14 years agoSo hey, I got a job! I'm workin' at the Meijer in Jenison, which is in the GR area. I'll be working second and third shifts in the gas station. Not the greatest job, still minimum wage, but it's 32 hours a week, so there's that. I just got all my employment paperwork done today and I'll start training tomorrow!
So uh, I guess if any of you live near Jenison and like to buy gas late at night, come to Meijer and you might be able to say hi to me X3
Also, I'll be going to Youmacon this year again, like I have for the past three years. I'm really pumped, Youma is always a lot of fun, and I'll get to see a lot of my friends in one place over one weekend, which is an exciting prospect. Anyone else goin'? =D

Twitter thing
Posted 14 years agoBumping the last journal off my page, I totally have one of those Twitter-ma-bobs. I've had it for a while, but I mostly just used it to follow other accounts. My friends have been suggesting I tweet more often though, so I figured while I'm doin' that, I may as well drop it here, too.
CloudyObsession
Follow me! Or not! Typically anyone who follows me will get followed back, so at the very least, it's good for adding one to your follower count. Also, I hope I never have to type that many variants of the word "follow" in a single sentence ever again.

ranty rant rant
Posted 14 years agoSO! A few of you may know that roughly a week before I moved, I was having problems with my left ear and suspected I might have some hearing loss going on. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned move eating up my funds, I couldn't really afford a doctor's visit, so I decided to put off seeing a doctor until I moved to Grand Rapids, figuring that Grand Rapids is a pretty big city, there would likely be a free clinic somewhere I could go to.
Some of you may also know that for over two weeks now, I've been dealing with a lot of cold/flu-like symptoms. The symptoms themselves aren't all that bad, save the occasional coughing fit, but they've been persisting. One of my roommates suggested I see a doctor, and since I needed to see one regarding my ear, I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea and I could kill two birds with one stone.
So I decided to browse the net and the phone book to look for one of those free clinics. Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan, so there's gotta be at least one, right? Hahaha WRONG. There are none. Or at least, there are none within reasonable driving distance, especially for someone with a pretty low amount of gas in the gas tank. My roommate recommended going to the Spectrum Health Urgent Care facility in Grandville, about 15 miles from the apartment. According to their website, they'd examine and treat any patient "regardless of insurance or ability to pay." Perfect. So I decided to head out there.
They were pretty quick about getting my information and getting me registered. Only problem was, when I told the lady at the desk I was here to see a doctor for two separate things, she told me that because they were so busy (they were pretty decently packed), that if I could only see the doctor for one thing, or I'd have to pay for two visits. And yes, I did say pay. That whole "regardless of insurance or ability to pay" pretty much means that if you don't have insurance and can't pay, they'll just keep throwing bills at you until you can. I mean, I figured as much, and at least I didn't have to copay, but still, ugh. So yeah, not only could I not talk to the doctor about my ear because I could only see him for one thing, if I want to see a doctor about it, I'll have to pay for another visit. Also, the price for one of those visits is $144. Lovely.
Oh, and as it turns out, what I thought were cold/flu symptoms ended up being bronchitis. I got a prescription for a steroid inhaler and some cough suppressant, but according to the nurse, the former is gonna run me up somewhere in the neighborhood of $80. Of course, the money is coming right out of my life insurance loan money, which is supposed to be going toward finding myself a proper apartment/living space when I land myself a job, as well as my phone cards, gas, food, etc.
And while we're on the subject of landing jobs, by my count, I had to have put out 40+ job applications by now, and so far none of them have come back with anything.
Also, when I got home, I got locked out of my apartment. For the fifth time, no less, since there are five of us living here and only four keys.
So yeah, it's been an absolutely magical day.

Posted 14 years agoSo before he goes to work,
nightflurry asks me to fold his laundry and put it on his bed so he can put it away when he gets home. It's a simple, easy task which I can certainly do, no problem. Sometime during the day, I get the laundry folded for him, drop it on his bed, and resume what I was doing. He comes home, ignores the laundry until he's just about to go to bed, then finally he goes to put it away. I then learn that folding the laundry was pointless, as he just stuffs the clothing into the drawer, and I wonder why he asked me to fold it to begin with, but I digress. The first thing he goes to put away is his underwear. He opens the top drawer and proceeds to stare at it for what seems like ever. I ask him what he's doing, and he says "I have to make sure I'm doin' it right." Yes folks, he has forgotten what drawer he keeps his underwear in. Finally, he throws it in the drawer, and starts to put everything else away. When he gets to socks though, he opens that top drawer again, frowns, and exclaims "No! I got it wrong!" and tears the underwear out of there, stuffing it quickly into another drawer.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the man I live with.

Song of the Day - Day 26
Posted 14 years agoThat Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed), by Panic! at the Disco, from Pretty. Odd.
As I've mentioned before, I love Panic's second album. I mean, their first album was okay, but their second album was not only a completely different style, but I just thought it was more fun. Not just that, but I found it had a lot more memorable songs. In any case, That Green Gentleman was the second single from the album, and it's probably one of the best overall examples of their style change, along with Nine in the Afternoon (That Green Gentleman was very folky, and Nine in the Afternoon was incredibly reminiscent of earlier BritPop).

Song of the Day - Day 25
Posted 14 years agoSoul Phase, by Shuhei Kita, from the Persona 3 Portable Original Soundtrack
Ah, the Persona series, definitely some of the best RPGs out there. P3P was the PSP remake of Persona 3, and it definitely made what was a great game even greater. The original opening to Persona 3 was...weird. That's not to say I didn't at least like it...a little...but it wasn't great. In fact, the original Persona 3 soundtrack was very weird in general, but the songs ran the gamut from being really awesome (like the full moon boss theme Master of Shadow) to downright silly (BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY BABY ooooOOOAHHHHEAAAHAHAAAHH). All the additions to the soundtrack that P3P brought along were great, though. Probably the best of the bunch is new opening theme, Soul Phase. In fact, the new opening in general is just really cool, so I suggest you watch the video along with it if you so chose.
