MAKE MICHELLE CRY CON: A Post-FA:U report
Posted 12 years agoOh thank goodness con season is over. I gotta get work done.
So yeah, FA:U was HELLA FUN. And in case you guys don't get the title of this journal, FA:U does a charity auction for the NJSPCA (New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, look 'em up and help em out!) and this wonderful lady named Michelle is the NJSPCA's liason to the con. We make it a point to make her cry at least once every year (good tears, though, not being mean). We did just that by raising over $10,000 for them. We made her cry I think 7 times. Hell, we made her captain cry, and that dude was a scary-looking crew-cut military-lookin' guy.
I gotta admit, I really dug this con. Got plenty of business, chat with some really awesome peeps. The con put my art on the conbook and the labcoats they were sellin, and I came home with a couple posters (one for my wall cuz I was proud as hell of that pic and I want it above my monitor, and another for my mom cuz she loves me). I even hit up gideon's panel and found out he's a fan of my work, which was a bit of a perk-up. My own panel went off pretty well, and the create-a-character with missmab was a hilarious failure of democracy as expected (not a bad thing, just hilarious) and I may well be doodling up the monster that came of that sometime in the near future.
Really, the only things I could possibly bitch about are the things outside of the convention's control. Namely, the mayhem spread by that wedding party, and how stupidly far I had to travel to get there. Btw, fourteen hour train rides SUCK. But I might yet go back next year, regardless of the distance, though I think next year I'mma fly there instead. But all in all, silverautomatic and dragoneer run a pretty awesome convention, and I strongly recommend you check it out next year.
Anyways, I'm gonna get back to work and get posting again in the next couple days once I've had a chance to rest. I've been busy as hell the last month and a half, and I've got a little backlog to clear up.

AS IF THE CONSTANT ADS FOR THE CON HAVEN'T ALREADY TOLD YOU! I'm gonna be one of the GoH's at FA:U next weekend. Gonna be comin' in by train with cooper and missmab, cuz Coop doesnt do air travel and I've never been on a train before (I only just realized that).
I'm busy gettin materials together for my panel on tech stuff, were I'll be talkin about and giving tips for drawing and designing robots, power armor, cybernetics, and general sci-fi goodness. I figure there's a LOT of peeps I talk to who are like "I can't draw tech stuff!" and I wanna be like "YES YOU CAN!" cuz, I'm, like, enthusiastic about this kinda thing.
So yeah, good times ahead.
Also, hiatus is going to continue til after the con, where I'll then be playin catch-up like a mofo so I can have money to pay bills and buy food and all that. Thankfully, rent is covered til October (thanks in no small part to the amazing generosity of the peeps that donated to help Coop and I get this new apartment, we're still utterly blown away by that), so I hopefully can get more of the main queue taken care of as well, cuz I planned on getting that queue cleared before the year's out.
And that should wrap it up, more or less. I'll hopefully see a lot of you guys at the con!

AFTER THE BOMB: A Post-Condition Report
Posted 12 years agoI'm not exaggerating when I say my bud, cajunfox and his crew know how to put on a helluva con.
Condition is a small, young convention, this weekend having been the fourth such con. Normally, pretty under the radar, except that it is literally in my hometown, and run by my local gang of friends that I've known for like, a decade (damn, it's been that long?), so naturally, I've got nothing to lose when it comes to attending. I could literally take a city bus to it.
So, I dropped in this year again, having missed most of the fun last year due to work and my health problems. This year they were doin this post-apoc theme. The guys have this running storyline (I LOVE cons with a story behind the theme) that recently involved a nuclear-powered still (few people love booze quite as much as Cajun) that had gone critical and blew up. This tied into the ever-popular assassin game and nerf wars they have every year, as well as the guys distributing canteens to the super-sponsors (they've always got something awesome for them) and even having rewards for collecting faction bottlecaps from the faction leaders for various deeds and whatnot. Basically, they're a LOT more engaging and fun than, like, every other con I've gone to. And a LOT of peeps were walkin around in post-apoc costumes, which was also awesome as hell.
Now, as for little ol' me, I spent a good chunk of the con either workin' my ass off in the dealer's room (with a LOT of other artists, like GoH caltroplay, missmab, maxblackrabbit and other GoH eevachu, to name a few) or chillin in the pool. It was the first time in like, ten years I'd gone swimming, mostly because I actually remembered my swim trunks this time. I managed to arrange a few trades and commissions (yes, I occasionally commission peeps I REALLY dig, it's just not very often. Gotta reward yerself sometimes, y'know?). I actually got pretty much exclusively work done of my new character, Pond, whom I'm slowly working on a proper reference for before I start posting her on here (peeps on twitter probably remember seeing the rough ref I did a while back, the blue squirrel chick). I'm VERY satisfied with what I managed to get thus far. Once again, thanks maxblackrabbit, sererena and goin back to Anthrocon, gunmouth, you guys are awesome.
Next year's theme for Condition is Monsters!, which, if you ask me, is pretty freakin' sweet. I totally recommend peeps get their butts to the next Condition. I dare you to find a more alcohol-fueled con, it's kinda completely awesome
I'll be posting in a couple days about my plans for FA:U in detail. Well, as much detail as I can muster, seeing as I don't have a ton of details about it yet, except that I've done some SWEET ASS ART for them (just a little preview) and I just realized I've got less than ten days to finish up my material for my panel on tech stuff, so my little hiatus is probably going to continue til at least after FA:U

A Very Minor Moving-Related Hiatus/Slowdown-Thing
Posted 12 years agoOnly for like, a week or two, really. We found out yesterday, finally, that we were approved for the new apartment, so the next couple weeks are gonna be focused on packing and preparing to get out of this shithole and into a better apartment with air conditioning (we're in the middle of a deadly heatwave here. It's so hella hot that it's been nearly impossible to do anything at all this week, including packing. With humidity it's 45C out right now) and an exercise room (because I -NEED- to get my ass in shape now)
On the plus side, with the exception of going to Condition and FA:U, I've got a fair bit of free time ahead of me after the move to complete as much of this workload as possible. I figured I'd let you guys know so you're not noting me wondering where your commissions are at. I've got everything listed down, and still have everyone's paperwork from AC, they WILL get done.
Also, once again, I wanna thank everyone who donated and commissioned Cooper to help us out of that financial pothole we hit last week. Without you guys we'd be SO BONED. We really can't thank you enough.
Anyways, just keepin you guys in the loop. stay cool, everyone.

We have the BEST FANS
Posted 12 years agoOkay, so they're cheap-ass walmart fans, but it's cool enough in here that we're not sweating like pigs, so they're doin their job.
But we've also got THE BEST FANS, ie; you guys! In the last couple days you guys have completely saved our asses and then some. The new medical expenses, and surprise costs from the con and the new apartment had me in particular on the ropes. But cooper had the courage to say something and ask for help from you guys, and the amount of support we've gotten is simply mindboggling. At this point I'm actually fairly certain we're gonna be okay.
And people wonder why I'd never, EVER give up on the fandom. You guys may be weird, even a little creepy at times, but there's so many good people here, there's no group I'd rather be part of.
(Also, if you wanna continue to support Coop and myself, I've still got a crapload of shirts I gotta sell. CLICK HERE. They're comfy as hell, but I can't wear them all myself (wearing a hundred shirts all at once gets a little warm))

Posted 12 years agoSo, I'm sure many of you saw Coop's journal here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4826950/ about the whole apartment situation. We found out yesterday, much to our surprise, that they also expected the first month's rent on top of the deposit I had to pay. At this point in time we're almost out of the woods (THANK YOU to everyone who signal boosted the journal and provided donation and commissions her way) but every little bit helps. This apartment is pretty much falling apart around us thanks to poor management and this being a pretty old, falling-apart building, so we gotta get out, both for our minds as well as our bodies (pests and mold, man, don't breathe that)
Aaaaand speaking of bodily health, the second chunk of bad news that hit yesterday: I am diabetic. Runs in the family and I made a LOT of stupid dietary choices involving retarded amounts of sugar and carbs (remember that one year at Anthrocon when I drank a few giant pixie sticks mixed into cans of pepsi? yeah, don't do that kids, that's stupid). So, unless there's some kind of miracle breakthrough in diabetic medicine, I get to live with this for the rest of my life. Little bit of a bummer, but I'll adapt, and I've got a fairly large number of diabetic friends and family to help me. I'll be fine.
I'd open up publicly for more commissions, but I've got a fairly large chunk on my plate already that I gotta clear up, thus why cooper is taking on commissions. Donations are welcomed, but I'm not the kind to go begging. Note me if you want my paypal addy, or donate through Coop (which is probably easier), since the money's going to the same place in the end anyways. Another great way to support us without going away empty-handed would be to BUY MY SHIRTS HERE They're $20 each, and super-comfy. Admittedly not stuff you'd wear out in public unless surrounded by a mob of your fellows, but they're awesome for cons and nightwear (no, seriously, they're comfy as hell)

BONER SQUAD: A Post AC report
Posted 12 years agoSo, this year was the first year I had a dealer's table, as well as the first year I worked all the way through it. And I am exhausted as fuck.
Thankfully, it was a pretty drama-free con for me. Had a lot of fun if sometimes labor-intensive commissions (sketches they may have been, but there's a lot of effort involved in drawing shitloads of power armor) and even had some homework to do, plus a pile of other busts and whatnot I had to take before the con to pay for stuff, PLUS I'm moving in a couple weeks, so needless to say I'm gonna be BUSY AS HELL for a little bit. I might even have to take on a little more work to make up for the fact that my shirt sales didnt go that great and I had to pay out of pocket for the shirts. On the plus side, I can sell them (go here http://www.cobaltpulsar.com/store/i.....amp;cPath=5_12 ) and I don't have to pay for them again. I just really wish I was able to come home with a bit more money for the move. So who knows, maybe I'll open up for a few busts in the coming days.
So, that's business. Now the pleasure. I had a lot of fun. Lots of new peeps, but seemingly less and less of the old faces. I was a little bummed about all the peeps that didn't make it out this year. On the upside, there were a few unexpected faces (I'm lookin at you [koh] ) that I was glad to see, and even better many magical room moments (cooper, caltroplay, fluffkevlar and acehusky ) and that unforgettable graffiti on the concrete barrier between the Omni and the Westin (if you were there, you probably know what I'm talkin about). I was actually really excited to contribute to roxicat's sketchbook and get some work done by gunmouth and my local friend sererena (whom NEEDS TO POST MORE SHIT IN HER GALLERY DAMMIT ESPECIALLY THOSE BADGES YOU WERE DOING YOU AWESOME ARTISTLADY! (seriously, beautiful work, skilled, and cute as hell)). I even ended up makin a few new friends as well, and I guess my fires of imagination have been stoked a bit. But that last part might need to wait a little bit while I get all this work done.
Overall, pretty good con. And now if you don't mind, I'mma go pass the fuck out cuz I'm tired as hell and have a lotta stuff to do in the coming days.

On the upside, there were a few unexpected faces (I'm lookin at you [koh] ) that I was glad to see, and even better many magical room moments (cooper, caltroplay, fluffkevlar and acehusky ) and that unforgettable graffiti on the concrete barrier between the Omni and the Westin (if you were there, you probably know what I'm talkin about). I was actually really excited to contribute to roxicat's sketchbook and get some work done by gunmouth and my local friend sererena (whom NEEDS TO POST MORE SHIT IN HER GALLERY DAMMIT ESPECIALLY THOSE BADGES YOU WERE DOING YOU AWESOME ARTISTLADY! (seriously, beautiful work, skilled, and cute as hell)). I even ended up makin a few new friends as well, and I guess my fires of imagination have been stoked a bit. But that last part might need to wait a little bit while I get all this work done.
Overall, pretty good con. And now if you don't mind, I'mma go pass the fuck out cuz I'm tired as hell and have a lotta stuff to do in the coming days.

July3-8, I'mma be at Anthrocon, cuz I always go. I'm stayin at the Omni, cuz it's simply the best hotel, hands down. I love those guys. I've got a dealer's table this time, too! I'll be at the Illuminated Rivets table with a buncha cool peeps, where I'll be selling t-shirts and doing sketches for around $50 (might be more for more detail-intensive pieces).
After AC, I'm packin'! Moving to an apartment across the street from my current location in the last week of July, cuz my current apartment building is kind of a shithole and the new place is in a new building, with a little less space but with better facilities and central air! WOO!
Then, August 2-4 I'm gonna be doing more sketch work at Condition Wasteland, in my hometown of London, Ontario. I hope I'll have a few bucks left over from moving to get some kind of costume together, cuz they're doin this kickass post-apoc theme this year, and I wouldn't mind dressin up a bit.
And after all that, The BIG ONE. As you've inevitably seen from the banner ad at the bottom of your inboxes for the last like, month, I'm gonna be Guest of Honor at FA: UNITED! Aug16-18. This is my first time going, but something tells me it's gonna be a kickass time. I'm gonna be running a panel on cybernetics and tech stuff in general (for all you peeps that say they can't draw it), but I've got a little problem. They want me to do two panels, and I can't think of a second idea. Anyone wanna help me out with suggestions here?

Posted 12 years agoGuess who has two thumbs and just quit his crappy call center job. This guy, right here.
I didn't do it impulsively, I gave it a lot of thought. I weighed my options, sorted my finances, sorted out what I'd need to do, all that jazz. It took me a while, and it was even more difficult with a stress-addled brain. But thanks to some doctor-ordered time off I managed to clear my head enough to really take stock of things, and sort out how and where I'm going in life. A lot of my friends were seeing how much that place was slowly killing me (and noticed how much happier and healthier I looked during that break after I'd made my decision).
Really, it came down to having enough faith in myself to let go of that safety net. I mean, it was steady employment, a smidge above minimum wage, and it'd always be there regardless of how I was doing artistically, and I was also remarkably good at it (I have a kickass phone voice, by the way, I often got confused for the automated system). It was safe. But I'm an artist, to the core. And I gotta chase my dreams. I just turned thirty, and I was wasting my heartbeats there, answering phone calls for no other reason than a pretty lousy paycheck, and coming home exhausted and brain-fried. And besides, even if, by some horrible twist of fate this art thing goes downhill, there's always other, better jobs.
I think the proper choice here is obvious. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
So, I'm now, officially, a full-time self-employed professional artist. Fuck Yeah!
I'm gonna be spending the next couple weeks getting caught up on this backlog. I'll be noting peeps as I work to get commission details again (I'm horrifically unorganized, something I'm now taking steps to rectify). If you want to change what you wanted me to draw I am more than happy to change up the details as you like. I'm hoping to get as much of that list done and out of the way as possible.
And at the end of the month, I'm gonna be taking on some more commissions. Start saving, kids, cuz May is gonna be Fellatio Month! Just keep an eye out for the journal ^^.

I mean like, major projects, books, games, shit like that). but things are kinda starting to line up to get me out of my dayjob and having more time to work on art, and possibly start something awesome independent of my commissions. We'll see how things line up.

so, had an uneventful procedure, thankfully. they went in through the radial artery on my right wrist this time instead of the groin. Thankfully I'm a lefty, so I'm not fubar'd for the next few days. It does mean I gotta have a couple days rest and no heavy lifting, but other than that I'm fine.
Let me tell ya, though, having a balloon inflated in a major coronary artery HURTS. I was so glad when they pumped the drugs in. They had to inflate again because they spotted a second spot in one of the smaller arteries next to it, but they didn't have to put in a stent for that one, thankfully.
Anyways, I'm gonna be takin it easy for the rest of the day. Thanks for all the support, everyone. It really does wonders when you know you've got people rootin for ya

Angioplasty
Posted 13 years agoHey guys, figured I'd toss up a post before I head into the hospital at 9am uh... today. Goin in for angioplasty. For those of you who haven't heard, I've got a blockage in my heart, and this procedure is basically that they're gonna run a tube with an uninflated balloon on the end of it into the blockage, inflate it to smash it up, and then install a stent to keep it open. Pretty routine procedure, very low chance of complications. I'm willing to do furries or humans with this set (in case you're a marine "purist" lol) but let's keep it loyalist for now (I'll do a batch of chaos guys at a later date). $150 each. Health Update, Mood and Musings
Posted 13 years agoSo I've got an angioplasty lined up for Oct. 18th. Last week the doctors did the angiogram and found the exact spot I'm having trouble; one of the major arteries on the top-front of my heart has a nice buildup of plaque blocking it to the point of near-uselessness. Apparently the placement of it right before a bifurcation made the situation a little more complex, so they put me on some blood thinners instead of taking care of the blockage right then and there. Should be a relatively easy procedure, and my relatively young age limits the number of possible complications. Things are lookin up.
As for my mental state, things were lookin pretty bleak. I was already in rough shape, and Cooper left for a few days to Toronto to hang with friends, leaving me alone, frustrated, depressed and in general a complete wreck (She'd had it planned for a while, I just happened to be in a shitty place when she left). But strangely, I perked up a bit after she left. My muse started rollin again on a couple things. And when I actually start having ideas, I tend to snap out of depression. Without creativity I tend to feel like I lack purpose, get frustrated, and the frustration tends to make it worse.
One of the things my brain started working on again was my little sci fi setting (if you haven't already read them, look back through my journals to my "Mindbaby" series of journals. I'm told I have a gift). While I'd already made a setting, full of neato cultures and groovy tech stuff, I hadn't really given the setting much of a flavor. One could be forgiven for taking it as "yet another dry, bland sci-fi setting", because it more or less is, to a degree (except with the transhumanism ramped up and use of synthetic ecology, i.e. robot steaks made from robot cows that graze dumps and landfills full of robot parts). I was lacking that certain something, y'know? that draw, that thing that appeals to an observer, that draws them in, gets them fantasizing. A decent hook.
So, I got to thinking (after taking in some DCAU material, and spending a fair chunk of time at TVTropes) that the ideal hook would be characters that are elevated above the common man. Star Wars has their Jedi, 40K has their Space Marines, Girl Genius has their Sparks, y'know, stuff like that. so, what kind of person could occur in my setting? Well, I used the stuff I'd developed for my backstory for my own fursona; ex-military, runs his own little company that builds ships and power armor for individual customers, and goes out from time to time to fight in battles where believes in the cause. Hm. he wouldnt be the only guy doing that, would he? Fuck no.
Well, let's roll with that idea. Maybe with the advances in communication and transportation technologies, individuals or small groups might weigh in on the battlefields of the far future with increasing regularity. Motivations vary. Some are genuine heroes who go in because they feel it's the right thing to do. Some might be PMC's going in to make some money. I imagine a lot of people would come in to provide refugee support and evacuation, guys with their own little frigates and cargo vessels. Hell, there would probably be a fair number of pirates swooping in to scavenge, and sadistic monsters who just go in for the thrill of the kill. Some would be heavily augmented cyborgs or even sentient vehicles, some would be minimally augmented but strongly heroic or malevolent. But they'd all be far from normal, and in a sense, elevated above the common man.
I honestly can't think of a suitable name for these individuals. I'll have to do some research, and flesh it out a bit more. They wouldn't be too far separate in organization and metafictional importance to superheroes, just without the weird superpowers and tights. They'd be hero-level characters. It'd be the position you'd want to put yourself in when you're fantasizing about being in the setting.
Flavor, man.

Heart Update: Worse than expected
Posted 13 years agoSo, the doctor at the hospital who's been overseeing my heart problems got back from vacation on monday, saw the results of the CT test I had, and called me in a barely-contained panic. You know this is goin fun places...
I apparently have a blockage, brought on by years of poor dietary choices. Cholesterol's super-high (I love me sum fried foods!), blood sugar was high (possible diabetes), liver proteins in the blood (possible fatty liver) and apparently, I really could have had a heart attack at any moment in the last month, so the doc called my buttery ass into the hospital that day. got some xrays, more blood samples, got some prescritptions, and I've got an angiogram (dyes in the blood to see the problem better) and a possible angioplasty (inflate a balloon in the problem area and install a stent) lined up for Monday.
Nobody was really expecting me to be in such bad shape, as far as I know. Not even the doctor. I guess I'm startlingly young for this kinda thing, but given my family's history with heart problems (everyone on my dad's side died of heart problems. EVERYONE), I shoulda seen this comin'. And laid off the baconators. Don't do baconators, kids.
Honestly, I'm a little afraid. Not even really of the procedure itself, I can handle a little pain. There's that little one-in-a-thousand chance of complications, though. I know the human mind ain't exactly the best at realistically measuring risk, and stuff like that feels more like a 50/50 instead of a 0.1%, but my mind hasn't been in the best of places as of late. It's probably just ye olde chemical depression talking but I don't really feel like I've got much to live for. I mean, I get fixed up, then what? I feel like I'm at a dead end, that this is the best I'm gonna get, just now I get to watch my diet, and keep working in the call center, and hammering out commissions til I drop dead. I'm already gettin white hairs. My creativity is shot. I'm burned the fuck out.
