General | Posted 16 years agoFor those who've been following this little saga...
I could have done without the last two weeks. My whole immediate family could've done without the last two weeks. Mum had deteriorated somewhat rapidly from the effects of the breast cancer she's been battling for 2 1/2 years. She was gravely ill in the local hospital when my older brother and I arrived. A few days later, in the early morning of the 2nd of May, she passed away in my father's arms.
I miss her already. She was a kind, sweet, loving person, and she didn't in the slightest deserve what she had to go through. She deserved better than that.
Most of the last week has involved my elder brother, my father, and myself going through photos and doing other things to organise her memorial service. And occasionally crying, of course, but we're all manly men so I won't mention that.
Not many people get to perform at their own memorials. My mother did. Mum was a talented classical soprano, and though she never got around to getting professionally recorded, in the days after her death we were very fortunate to find a few cassette tapes of a few public performances she gave in the 90's. Not exactly high-fidelity recordings, but it's her, and after I did my best to remove the tape hiss noise and make it as presentable as possible, we decided to make her singing a major feature of the memorial. She loved her music. It seemed to have gone down well; after her final piece, the end of the service, the audience spontaneously applauded.
The local town art esteadford is planning on introducing a vocal section. Touchingly, they're planning to name it in her honour.
It's going to take a while to get used to her being gone. I was at dinner a couple of nights ago with some relatives of my sister-in-law and, for a split second, found myself looking around wondering where Mum had gotten to. Each time it happens the realisation that follows will always be a little depressing. I feel for Dad. He's strong, but it's surely tough after having been together for just over 40 years.
Thanks to all who've shown interest and given sympathy, I appreciate it. As for art, don't worry. It'll be back soon enough. If you still can, go show your mum some love. It is the appropriate day, after all.

Mum's in hospital
General | Posted 16 years agoNot looking good at all. I'm about to head 100km south to be with her, and family. Please forgive any unresponsiveness.
I hate to see Mum like that
General | Posted 16 years agoI've just returned from spending the Easter long weekend with my family. This is the first time I've seen Mum since she was paralysed from the cancer. It... really sucks to see her like that. The rumpus room has become her "bedroom" as it has easy access and space to fit her motorised bed (bed goes up, bed goes down) and assorted mobility and medical items (and the big TV, of course).
She has no control over anything below her belly-button. It's pretty disconcerting to have to clear out the room on a regular basis so that Dad can change Mum's nappy. It ain't right. Such a thing should never be typed. And yet... there it is.
Regardless, she's in good spirits, and Dad's taking good care of her. He's not a spring-chicken himself (60-something), and had his own medical dramas to worry about (titanium cage where some vertebrae used to be), but that's not slowing him down. And to be perfectly honest, I'm sure he's having great fun designing and building wheelchair ramps of various sizes for all about the house, and various hoists and contraptions to lift Mum in and out of places like the car, for example. He's always been keen at that sort of building stuff. And it's good that, with all that, Mum still has that much mobility. It takes quite a while to get sorted to go anywhere, but they get there eventually. She's really not independent, though, and Dad has greatly reduced his work to take care of Mum. For him, and he's said as much, he's getting his head around the idea that taking care of Mum is a full-time job.
Mum doesn't have a whole lot of energy, although as long as I've known her she's never been very energetic. Some days she'll spend mostly in bed, but others she'll be up and about (after Dad helps her into her motorised wheelchair, with which she's been bulldozing furniture), working on her hobbies (like embroidery, a table full of which Dad had to clear off to allow the family, us 3 brothers and a brother's wife, space to use).
It's hard to tell. She could be with us a good while longer yet. Or not. We just don't really know. We're all doing our best to keep up spirits. We're certainly not a sad family. We get along well, and don't dwell on anything. ... But... you know... It still sucks.
Why am I typing this? Fishing for sympathy? Well I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a small element of that, but I'm not kidding myself. ... I try to keep a reasonably upbeat profile here, but sometimes... you just have to put something out there. Venting? I don't know. I just wanted to.
...Donate to cancer research or something. If you can spare it.

Things
General | Posted 16 years agoJust a few things I'd like to say:
1) All my work, unless stated otherwise, is given to you as Creative Commons By-NC-ND. And the ND is negotiable. I'm a fan of free culture, as well as open source.
2) All things being equal, I aim to put any money I make on commissions back into the furry artscape. Exactly how is up to me, but I don't plan on ever relying on it as an income. I know how to manage my finances.
3) To the peeps that hit my +watch button: Thanks! And hello! I don't really do the thank-shout thing anymore, too copy/pasta and impersonal for my taste, but I do check out all your userpages.
4) And to all the peeps that hit the -watch button... well I never really liked them, anyway. :P

Happy π Day!
General | Posted 17 years agoIt's March the 14th. Yep, 3.14. π day!
π is the ratio between a circle's circumference and its diameter. It's an irrational number, which means its digits go on forever with no repeating pattern. So if you were to look hard enough, you can find the complete works of Shakespeare encoded in the digits. (Of course, that would be a long way in. And since the digits are infinte, you'll find an infinte number of copies of Shakespeare hidden in there, at unpredicatable locations! (Infinites are fun!))
This handy little number can be found in all sorts of equations. From simple things like relating areas and volumes of circles and spheres and other curved objects to their thickness (like A=πr2), to big things like gravitation (Einstein's field equations for general relativity: Gμν = 8πGTμν/c4), to tiny things like quantum mechanics (Heisenberg's uncertainty principle: ΔxΔp >= h/4π).
It's also a part of one of the most beautiful equations ever discovered, Euler's identity: eiπ + 1 = 0. I call this equation beautiful because it non-trivially relates 8 of the most fundamental components of mathematics:
Addition
0, the additive identity
Multiplication
1, the multiplicative identity
Exponentiation
e, the exponential differentiation identity
i, the imaginary unit
and π.
How could something that relates all these things so elegantly not be beautiful?
These days we know far, far more digits of π than are practically necessary. You need less than 40 digits to be able to compute the size of a circle as big as the observable universe to the precision of a hydrogen atom. And yet we know π up to 1.2 trillion digits. At this point, it's just for the fun!
So, with that in mind I hope you have a fun π Day!

The cast
General | Posted 17 years agoThe Cast
I'm using this post to describe my characters and keep track of some examples of art featuring them, some of my own and some work of others (most recent first). I'll update this (semi-) regularly.
If you came here hoping for detailed and precise ref-sheets, my apologies (I suck). Hopefully the descriptions and examples are sufficient.
Legend:
My own work / Others' work
General / Mature / Adult
The Girls
Eva
Basics: Rabbit in her mid twenties.
Appearance: 5'5" (6'2" including ears). Athletic build. Completely white fur except for three small brown spots on top her right bum cheek (roughly 1/2" diameter at 12 o'clock, 1" at 1 o'clock, and 3/4" at 2 o'clock - see here). Hazel eyes. Pink nose. Very fine whiskers. Blonde hair just past her shoulders, often braided. C-cup breasts.
Personality: Active, always doing something, or poking her head in someplace. A sweet but funny/naughty girl. Bright but a bit forgetful. Frequently playing some team sport, and usually getting very carried away in the moment. Also likes gaming. Loves to give anything and everything a go. Takes exception to the assumption/stereotype that because she's a "bunny" she must love eating carrots, even though it's completely true.
Sexuality: Usually prefers men (but, like everything else, curious). A romantic. But she's a rabbit, so she's a horny romantic. Likes to be a bit silly in bed. Loves to give oral - she's a little bit of a cockslut.

Holly
Basics: Mouse in her early twenties.
Appearance: 4'11". Brown fur, cream ventral. Blue eyes. White hair to her upper-back. B-cup breasts.
Personality: Small and cute. Tail never sits still. Nerd and bookworm. Quite smart. Loves toying with broken gadgets (sometimes even succeeds in fixing them). Typically skips around the house in white singlet and undies, otherwise t-shirt and shorts. Inquisitive. Can also be subversive - she has fun stirring people. Practical joker.
Sexuality: Prefers men. Likes it rough - push her up against a wall and she'll love you for it.

Candice (aka Candi)
Basics: Skunk, perpetually 29 years old (so she claims; actually in her thirties).
Appearance: 5'7". Floofy grey fur. White ventral fur, hands, and feet. White stripe runs down her back, up the over-side of her tail, ending in a point. White inner thighs, a smaller stripe of white runs a short way along the under-side of her tail, narrowing to a point. Big fluffy tail (usually found raised or swaying). Light-purple/violet eyes. Long venetian-red hair, length to her lower back. Red pubic fur (carpet matches drapes). D-cup breasts.
Personality: Very sensual. Loves being sexy, posing. Loves lingerie, both the wearing and removing of. Prone to hold a grudge.
Sexuality: Prefers men. Enjoys light bondage and breath play. Loves anal.
Backstory: Used to be a model, but getting work became harder as she got older (a fact she's bitter about).

Rebecca (aka Becs)
Basics: Kangaroo (macropus rufus) in her mid twenties.
Appearance: 5'10". Strong hips and tail. Short (i.e. not "floofy") red-brown fur. Light-brown/cream ventral fur, lower limbs and tail. Green eyes. Brown hair to mid-back, sometimes in a ponytail or braided. D-cup breasts.
Personality: Introverted/reserved, some might say she's aloof. Likes being by herself, doing her own thing. She's at home in water. Enjoys boogie-boarding, but also just lying on the beach. Likes being lazy. Also likes lying in bed in the morning. Has a beautiful singing voice, and sings to herself often, but only if she thinks no-one can hear her (she's shy about it).
Sexuality: Bisexual without preference. Likes to be on the receiving end of oral.
Backstory: She was teased as a youngster for her unusually red coat (most Red Kangaroo females actually have a bluer coat than the males), and often mistaken for a young boy. Boobs have mostly solved that problem, now.

Light pink ventral fur, which also covers her bum and goes in a thin spiked strip up her back to between her shoulder blades. Maroon/dark purple lower limbs. Pink-tipped tail separated from the main fur colour by a wide maroon ring. Light blue eyes. Blonde shoulder-length hair. Small blonde pubic patch. C-cup breasts.
Personality: Bongo-playing, tree-hugging, free-loving hippie. Into aura and crystals and other new-agey stuff. Open-minded to a fault.
Sexuality: Bisexual without preference. Likes group sex, particularly if she's the centre of attention.

Nikki
Basics: Grey-headed flying fox (fruit bat) in her late teens.
Appearance: 5'2". Black fur, except for floofy orange fur around her neck and chest, and grey fur on her head. Lavender hair. Her arms are her wings. Three fingers (plus thumb) on each hand, elongated, with membrane connected between them and to her ankles. This makes dressing somewhat difficult; she tends not to bother.
Personality: Fun-loving, but quite flighty; prone to disappear on a whim, and reappear at her leisure. Happy to be around people, or out on her own. Fun to be around, but unreliable. Underestimates danger.
Sexuality: Bisexual. Kinky. Loves trying new things, as well as new people.

Wide white stripe on his back, running partway down his legs, around and to a point on his abdomen. Thin white stripe along his nose. Brown eyes. Short blonde hair.
Personality: To do...
Sexuality: Bisexual, but some female preference...

Tachyon
Basics: Jaguar in his early thirties.
Appearance: 6'0". Toned build. Vibrant green fur. White ventral fur and lower limbs. Black rosettes patterns on back, legs, arms, neck, and head. Black diamond-shape-tipped ears. Black hexagonal pattern on tail, with a black "cap" at the tip. Orange eyes. Whiskers.
Personality: Curious, pedantic, affectionate, introverted, with nerdy/sciencey interests. Enjoys floofy things and Monty Python. Don't call his rosettes "spots", or he'll eat you (and not in the good way).
Sexuality: Prefers women. 7" black cock. Likes creampies (giving) and orgasm control (giving or receiving; not orgasm denial). Has a voyeuristic streak, and a thing for red-heads.
Backstory: ...Pretty much just a thinly veiled avatar of myself.

Who wants ice cream?!
General | Posted 17 years agoBumping the old journal off since I think it best to not be on my user page anymore.
So, ice cream? What flavour? I like porn flavoured ice cream. Cheesecake ice cream is good, too. How about you?

Mum has cancer
General | Posted 17 years ago(Thanks to all my new watchers, and apologies that this should be the first journal of mine you read. I had to do it.)
For the past few years Mum has been fighting cancer. It started in the breast, and was treated, but was later found in her spine, and was treated. Two days ago it was found in her spinal cord. It will be treated again.
The way Dad talks is not encouraging that she's ever going to beat it. By the way, he's a GP (medical doctor). The best we can do is treat it wherever it pops up.
You'd probably call me a Mummy's Boy. I'm the youngest of 3 boys by about 8 years. I was a little spoiled. I could always count on her for a hug. I always had Mum looking out for me.
Which is why I'm finding it hard to accept that she might die from this. At the beginning my thoughts were that she would beat it, that we should only think about the worst case if it ever came to that. But it's not working. And now my optimism is running down.
She has slowed down some, mostly from the treatments she's had---those chemicals are nasty. She's still reasonably active, though. I don't know how the future will pan out.
Hopefully my next journal will be brighter. Thanks for reading.

Merry X, and LittleCookieComics guest strip by me
General | Posted 17 years agoNot that anyone cares, but I'm seeing folks over Xmas, so I may be somewhat out of the loop for a week or so. Anyhows, wishing you and yours a merry one. Here's a present: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/1816024/.
Bart Simpson is a person; Man convicted of child porn
General | Posted 17 years agoSometimes I hate this country. I wish I was making this shit up.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/1.....supreme_court/
Let me just emphasise: No child was ever involved. And yet this poor bastard now has a child porn conviction on his record. What a wank.
I've said before that it's likely some of the images on this site are technically "Child Porn" in this country. Australia's censorship laws are so draconian and stupid, and only poised to get worse under the current government.

Levelling-up
General | Posted 17 years ago25 today. I've noticed there are a few of us with birthdays around this time, which is cool. Nothing much special planned for me today - for a while now, birthdays are basically just another day.
Looking back, I guess 24 was an eventful year for me:
* I was published in Nature magazine
* I was a groomsman for an old school friend, gave a speech and all
* I visited Melbourne for the first time (a work conference)
* My PhD candidature was confirmed
* TV news showed a story about my work (and I made a brief cameo)
* I went on my first international trip, to Canada: presented a poster at a conference in Calgary, then briefly visited Waterloo and Niagara Falls (and bought a cute little howling husky plush while I was there)
* Dealt with calling emergency for my grandfather, who passed away in hospital (this a day after I came back from a week and a half long holiday)
Not the best note to end my year on, but that can't be helped. And, on top of all that, all the usual: setup and ran some physics experiments, drafted some papers for future publication, hacked on some open-source software, and drew some pretty pictures along the way.
And thanks. It wouldn't be nearly as fun if I didn't know there were people out there who appreciate the stuff I submit here. Thanks you all for the encouragement.
As one entry in my diary says, "Things were said. Objects were thrown. Not really."

Grandpa died last night
General | Posted 17 years agoI was the last relative to see him alive as he was driven away in an ambulance. He passed away at the hospital after several attempts to revive him. Taken by a massive heart attack at 89.
You might say I was close to him in the last few years. It's certainly true in a geographical sense: I live in a flat adjoining my grandparents house, so I saw him fairly frequently. We'd chat about various little things like weather, and his latest physical complaint (but you get those when you get to his age, even though he was still reasonably mobile and capable). He was a really nice old guy, always looking to the bright side.
My nana called me on my phone last night about an hour or so after I got home from work, and I went in soon after. Grandpa had fallen off his couch and onto the floor, breaking his nose and bleeding onto a small patch on the rug. He was having trouble getting up off the floor, struggling, seemingly confused, and unable to respond to us. I called 000 (Australia's 911). The paramedics came and took him away, though that all seemed to take quite an anxious while.
I tried calling what next of kin I could (rally the troops, as it were; Nana is certainly not in a state of health to be handling all this herself). What sucks is that I can't get a hold of my own mother, their daughter. Mum and Dad are traveling (and I was with them until I came home only two days ago), and their mobile phone must have been switched off.
I drove to the hospital with Nana, and met up with an uncle there, where we were given the news. The doctor said that even a young and healthy man wouldn't have survived a heart attack of that magnitude. I guess it took something pretty severe to finally bring Grandpa down.
There's no nice way to put this: Dead bodies are fucking creepy. And sadness and creepiness is a weird combination of feelings.
Their children, other than my mum, are all around today as things are being organised. The best I can do is to keep trying to contact Mum. Hopefully they turn their damn phone on soon.
*sigh* Furry porn might be put on hold for a while.

Ask me
General | Posted 17 years agoGo on. Ask me something. I'll answer honestly and accurately as I can. Anything. Me. My drawings. Science (I am a physicist, in case you didn't know). Your mum's cooking. Give me something to sink my teeth into.
Huh. That pun was unintentional. :-/
Let's see how long it takes before someone asks something that thoroughly squicks me. (Now that's just going to give you ideas, isn't it?)

Things I learned during my trip to Canada
General | Posted 17 years ago19 hours on planes (5 + 14, with 2.5 hours at LAX inbetween) is not really a whole lot of fun.
TSA guys are a bit... nuts. I got padded down and my bags swabbed; welcome to America!
Canada is nice. Actually, what I saw of Canada seemed quite similar to what I envisaged the U.S. to be (probably moreso than Canadians may like to admit) only a bit further north.
The mountains are big. Also, pretty. I managed a peek around Banff and Lake Louise. Also, cool. I don't dare imagine what winter is like.
The cars are big, too. Most of the utes you see around are freaking huge, though they frequently carry (next to) nothing in the tray. The roads are pretty expansive, too.
And speaking of things big, the splash-zone of North American toilets is huge. No hope of getting away with a silent rim-shot when there's no rim left to hit.
Niagara Falls is also big. It's hard to get an idea of how big the falls are, how wide the feed river is, and how deep the outflow river is without seeing it personally. And it's pretty. Except for all the kitsch crap people have built around it. That shit is fugly.
You can stay in Canada for nearly two weeks and somehow not try maple syrup. :-/
Lemonade is typically not carbonated. Lame. I love lemon soft-drink (as it's called back home), and carbonated lemonade can be hard to find. (I did find some eventually, at 99c/2L. Bargain!)
Sprite contains "natural lemon-lime flavours". Apparently. ...Maybe if you squint real hard and believe it does. See, they don't say that back home, because they'd get the ACCC on their arses for misleading advertising.
Salt and vinegar chip packets are aqua coloured, not purple.
Working out how much tip to leave is a really annoying use of time that could be better spent.
I probably learned something about quantum mechanics, too, I suppose. Or, at least, I should have. This was meant to be a work conference trip, after all.
You can get used to hearing the local accent, but it's great to hear a familiar drawl on the way home.
I'm back, by the way. Hi.
EDIT: Argh! How could I forget this one: The squirrels are really immensely stupidly cute! I just wish I could've gotten some more decent photos of them.

Visiting Canada, eh
General | Posted 17 years agoHey. Nice to see you again.
So... I'm flying to Canada in a week's time, attending a work conference for a week in Calgary, then heading over to the Toronto region to visit a lab there. The last day I plan to take some time out to check out Niagara Falls (see what all the fuss is about...). Should be pretty cool.
Now, at this point, some have probably figured out that I'm Australian. So, with that in mind, I'm sure you can imagine that I'm not exactly looking forward to the double-digit hour flight times to and from basically the opposite side of the planet, nor the brain-melting timezone differences. But apart from that...
And it's awesome to have a job that can take you to various parts of the world. Not that I generally enjoy traveling (my fursona is a cat for a reason), and I've never been outside Aus before, but still...
Anyway, all this means I'll be (mostly) gone for the last half of this month. Chances are I won't have caught up with all the submissions already posted just in the last few days by then (I like going through submissions in chronological order), so I'll probably have a good lot of catching up to do when I get back.
In other news, I'm currently battling the worst cold I can remember. Ugh. Usually it's just an annoyance and I can struggle on regardless. But this one has sent me back to bed a couple of times. Well, at least I didn't catch it a week later. That would suck exceptionally.

Characters forthcoming. No, really.
General | Posted 17 years agoI've come to a decision about my characters (or more correctly, my lack of them). Well, actually I came to this decision a couple of weeks ago, but now I'm ready to announce it. Not that any of you are worried about what I do, I'm sure. But, anyway...
I've decided that from now on I'll draw fewer random furs and more recurring characters. I'll try to not get too involved in backstories or explorations of their personality - I expect these things may evolve as I draw, and basic outlines will give me plenty to work with. I reckon a half-dozen or so furs should be a reasonable number, give or take. We'll see how things go. And the occasional random here or there won't hurt, either.
I've got a few characters in mind, already. I'll be uploading sketches starting soon(ish), beginning with Candi. It's possible that I've already uploaded her by the time you read this.
...I've just noticed that I've started each paragraph so far with "I've"...
Anyway...
So why am I doing this? Because I want to. To some extent it's an "ownership" thing (for lack of a better word) - you don't get to feel much affection for your creation if they're just another random fur. Also, I hope it'll help develop some consistency in my drawing. I'll just have to be careful to make a few characters that I'll actually be interested in drawing a few times.
So far it seems to be working. You (and I) will see in due course.
...
...So now I'm starting paragraphs with "So"? I think something's broken with my thing that I use to keep words with in my brain. My big brain word-bucket. What's that thing called, again?

Big Buck Bunny
General | Posted 17 years agoHere:
http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/
It's an animated short film, intended to showcase the capabilities of open source software, released under creative commons license, and it's about furry characters.
What's not to love?
Seriously, go watch it! It's awesome! If you can, grab the HD version off BitTorrent (linked at the site above). It really is quite beautiful.

Creating characters
General | Posted 17 years agoOriginally, this was just going to be a journal entry, but I decided to post it in the FA forums (here) to get a bit more of a general response. But in case you guys don't see it there, I'm posting here, aswell. I'm interested in what you have to say about it.
TL;DR summary: How, and for what reasons, did you create your characters?
Some backstory: I'm currently somewhat lamenting the fact that I can't seem to create for myself any characters that interest or excite me enough to draw more than once. It seems so many people in this fandom have their own characters, or at the least a fursona, which they can play with, draw, commission for, etc. All this is really cool. Yet in my (limited) experience as a mediocre artist (for want of a better word), I haven't managed to do this, myself.
Almost all of my work so far have been of random furs. I suspect part of the reason is that I simply get bored, and want to try something as different as I can by the time I'm working on the next picture (although, frequently, I'll start the next one long before I finish the last one). I'd like to have a few personal characters, though. I'd like to be able to draw a character MORE THAN ONCE for a change, and to also enjoy myself doing it. (I'd like to be able to cause drama when someone STEALS MY CHARACTER! Okay, not really...)
I have a few ideas in mind, some based on random furs I've drawn in the past. Though I'm concerned about whether I'll still be interested in them after I start drawing them more often. Or whether I'll come up with backstories for them that end up going against the situations I have in mind drawing for them. (That might not be an issue for some people, but even though it's fiction, it makes me feel guilty.)
Though I draw, I don't like calling myself an "artist", because I don't really have the artist mindset. (I have the scientist mindset---which is somewhat removed.) Characters typically don't just come to me. On the odd occasion that they do, they don't stick around for long (there's probably something anti-feng-shui about the furniture in my brain).
So I'm asking the question to get views from mindsets different to mine: how, and for what reasons, did you come up with your characters? Do you have a whole cast of characters, or just a fursona? Or not even that? Are your characters a part of your soul? Did they come out of nowhere and refuse to leave you alone? Did you think long and hard about an elaborate backstory? Do they originate from a role in a larger story? Did you just want to draw species X a few times? Are they based on people you know?
...Are they purely porn fodder?
Besides the fact that your answers may (or may not) help me, I'm genuinely curious about how other people approach the process of assembling their cast of furry characters. Where do your characters come from?

A rant on censorship/morality/TV/gaming in Australia
General | Posted 18 years agoSome background: This came about in a conversation with
Dereck_Dingo on his journal entry entitled "Cuntastic rant", regarding an apparent controversy on his side of the planet when Jane Fonda said "cunt" on breakfast TV.
It started when I posted this link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yyPHkJMlD0Q. Dereck suggested that people must be much more relaxed about this stuff where I am compared to the US.
Then the following was said. By me. And it was too long to leave it just buried in a comment.
You might need to see this one aswell: http://youtube.com/watch?v=olbNwSVutT8
If it happened, I'd wager lots of people here would bat eyelids, and also write complaints. The station would probably get away with calling it a "freak accident" or whatever spin they usually put on those things, and then go about their business. Depending on who and where it was, there could be controversy and news items and shit. It mostly depends on how much traction rival stations think they could get. I doubt it'd get anything near the attention of what 'cunt' would, though.
I'm reminded of an incident a couple of years ago when a lame Aussie version of the trashy "reality" TV show Big Brother got itself into strife. Some bogan dangled his balls on the face of one of the female housemates. http://youtube.com/watch?v=O8I5luYyKrw (I can't believe I'm using a story by A Current Affair as a reference. Ugh. I feel dirty.) That sure made some classy TV.
So for the next few weeks we're hearing all over the news about how this show is appalling trash (which is true, but that should be obvious) and should be canned or banned. News items and "controversy" and all sorts of crazy shit going on about how it was sexual assault (maybe true, but not the point I'm making) and how we can't allow this kind of filth on television. Even our damned prime minister (now ex, thank christ) was calling for the show to be canned because of it.
So much media attention about it. But then, I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that rival networks had a vested interest in bringing the show down. Or that the channel that was running the show was getting some major publicity. Nope. Nothing. Nothing at all.
Oh, and how's this for censorship: Here in Aus we have a thing called the OFLC, Office of Film and Literature Classification. Now, this is the mob that decides what ratings to give to movies and games and stuff. Fair enough, I'm all for classification: It allows people to be aware and make informed choices. But the OFLC does censorship, too. Of course, they don't call it censorship, their name is "Refused Classification" (RC), which translates to "We don't take kindly to your types around here."
RC classified material can't be sold, and it's illegal to possess. I'm uncomfortable with the premise of that, but I'm not going to be the first to protest about it because it's typically the worst of the worst. The next rating up the kid-friendliness ladder is X, typical porn. Can't be sold to minors and, in most states, is illegal to sell at all. Yep, in most states of Aus, prick-in-vag porn is illegal to sell. (Actually, technically it's all states of Aus, since the only two places you can buy that stuff legally are the ACT and NT territories.) Above that is R: Also illegal for under 18's, yada yada, but legally sellable in all states. Soft-core porn, high-violence (but certainly not at the same time), that sort of thing. Above that is MA15+, restricted to those 15+ or those accompanied by someone 15+. Above that it's all pretty lenient.
Right, now that I've set up the scene, consider this: There is no rating below MA for computer games. Any game that doesn't get an MA15+ or above gets RC. Banned. No R-rated game for j00!
Australia almost banned Duke Nuken 3D for this. No shit. The developers had to self-censor to get it through, but it was a soft censor that eventually got cracked. Big kerfuffle for the OFLC, but eventually they just re-rated the uncensored version up to MA.
The Grand Theft Auto series has consistently been an annoyance for the classification militants. Self-censorship to avoid RC in most of the sequels. Oh, and then there was "Hot Coffee". San Andreas got pulled from shelves so that the HIDDEN CONTENT THAT PEOPLE HAD TO ACTUALLY HACK THE GAME SO THEY COULD SEE THE POORLY CHOREOGRAPHED SIMU-SEX could be removed.
Then one of our dumb-fuck government ministers goes and makes a complaint about Manhunt, after it had been out for a year, and the OFLC reclassifies it from MA to RC. Banned!
And the inherent irony of banning a game about fighting a world where self-expression is denied was apparently lost on the OFLC regulators. (Contents Under Pressure.)
The kicker is, that in order to get ourselves a consistent set of ratings for games as for films, we have to get the Attorney Generals from each state to come together and agree. All of them. Maybe a half-dozen guys, right? They had a meeting a few weeks back, and we almost had it. We almost had consensus that the classifications should be consistent. Weren't for this one puritan fuck-knuckle South Australian luddite, apparently of the belief that only children play computer games, who just refused to go along outright. Thanks for that, arsewipe.
*sigh* I could probably go on.
Don't you worry. We have our fair share of indignant ignorant shitbags.
Dereck_Dingo on his journal entry entitled "Cuntastic rant", regarding an apparent controversy on his side of the planet when Jane Fonda said "cunt" on breakfast TV.It started when I posted this link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yyPHkJMlD0Q.
Ugh. I feel dirty.) That sure made some classy TV.

uncyclopedia.org verses encyclopediadramatica.com
General | Posted 18 years agoSo, whilst I should be doing something wholly more productive, I got to thinking about the fact that there are two faux-encyclopedia parody sites: uncyclopedia.org and encyclopediadramatica.com. Obviously, as is the case for all things, one must be better than the other. I decided that it was my duty to test the two sites to determine which. But how exactly should I go about it?
I perform the test in the most scientific and objective way possible by reading each site's entry on the other site, giving each a rating (pulled directly from my arse) out of ten, declaring the winner the site with the higher rating, and then getting shitfaced on champagne. Unfortunately, I don't have any champagne, so I'll have to settle for turps, instead.
Anyway...
Uncyclopedia: Written in the supposed style of an ED article, and, unfortunately, all the funniness that goes with it. I give it a 2.
ED: Written in... the style of ED, I guess. Not funny, just... this... bunch of stuff. *sigh* I give it a 2.
Oh wait, that means they are the same. Shit. Well this was a fucking waste of time.
At least Uncyclopeida had this to say: "One Uncyclopedia user even suggested a contest to see which is funnier. Here's a better idea: Let's compare cow shit with horse shit and see which is the best fragrance."
Fuck it, I'm giving Uncyclopedia partial credit for the self-reference. Therefore, Uncyclopedia is better than ED.
They're both still epic fail.
