Been a long time since I've posted anything here. Lack of ideas. Though I've written an awful lot, releasing it has been difficult. Well, to clarify, releasing it would be easy, but releasing it right is tough.
This year has been very dry, and a lot of disappointments have caught up to me. The internet has made it easier than ever to get yourself out there, but harder than ever to get noticed. Tired of putting so much effort into certain things and getting nothing back. (Another example, I dabbled in Grindr. That failed miserably.)
I seem to have lost interest in reading and writing, and even video games fail to give me the joy they once did. (With the exception of Night in the Woods. That was a pleasant surprise.) In short, everything I used to do that I identified as "me" doesn't seem to be working anymore, and I'm not sure what to do about it.
Maybe I'll have another tagenar story sometime. Maybe I won't. I think i've said all I wanted to say in those 3 books. My mind is not there anymore; it's in my less explicit work. Hard to be a writer in the furry world (or a writer in general) when adult work seems to be the only thing people pay attention to, and I just have nothing of that left in me. Despite that, I plan to begin releasing what I have... soonish, and hope it reaches an audience. Hope you'll follow me there when I do.
cheers!
Unreal Tournament 4
Posted 8 years agoI just found out a new Unreal Tournament is in development.
https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtournament/
I see they've changed the design of the Skaarj... again. They look like humans with tusks now. Is it really too much to ask that the Skaarj remain as sexy as they were in UT2K4?
http://gameswalls.com/unreal-tourna.....kaarj/1024x768
It's still in alpha stage, so there's hope.
I used to play UT. I was never very good at it, and it got routine way too quickly (spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, kill, die...), so I have no plans to start playing it again, but if the Skaarj were hot, that might have been a selling point!

Night in the Woods: Furries need to play this game!
Posted 8 years agoNight in the Woods. Wow... This is quite an experience in an indie game.
Mae has just dropped out of college, and she returns home to Possum Springs, an old mining town that has fallen on hard times.
Unlike most adventure games, Mae--the player--doesn't have amnesia. She knows everyone in town, and she wants to reconnect with them. She's only been away 2 years, but she discovers everything is different.
Nothing is quite as she remembers. The people are depressed, and everyone walks around with a chip on their shoulder because Possum Springs is drying up. Jobs are fleeing, people are out of work, and those who have a job can't make a decent living.
All Mae's old school friends are working crap jobs, and they seem to have grown up, and bitter. Everyone has matured except Mae. She is trapped between childhood and adulthood, and she doesn't know how to cross from one to the other.
Something strange is going on in Possum Springs. Something strange is happening to Mae...
The game is incredibly well-written. You get to know these people and their extensive histories so well you really do care about them. Even when they're doing mundane things, somehow they're interesting. Everyone has a defined personality, and their dialogue reads so fluid and natural.
Night in the Woods is pretty much an interactive cutscene. Think "To The Moon." Very little gaming to do, but the story it tells is so interesting, and the characters are so much fun to get to know, that I didn't care.
(There's always Demon Tower to satisfy the bloodlust after reading all that dialogue.)
The story thoroughly engrossed me, and I did not expect it to. It's engaging, funny, and more mature than I expected. Two of Mae's friends are openly gay! Mae was apparently a little criminal as a kid, and slipping into that role now was a strange experience. There are even political undertones in the story.
It's easy to get lost in this town for hours at a time. Not because the town is massive and interesting to explore. (It's actually quite small, and while there are some things to do apart from the current "mission," I wouldn't call it open-world. These side-tasks do affect the narrative in subtle ways though.) Rather, Mae's childhood friends are so much fun! I wanted to spend time with all of them! I even felt bad when I went with one and not the others because I wanted to get to know all of them!
My only complaints are... sprite slowdown?! Really?! More than a dozen polygons on screen at once, and the game slows down?! No excuse for that. And... loading screens... Lots of them... And some events are quicktime, but the buttons on screen do not match my controller. It told me to press button 8, or 9, or 6, but my gamepad is labeled A, B, X, Y. Never did fully memorize which was which. These are hardly game-breaking issues though.
It tells the story of this generation. Kids who aren't allowed to grow up as their parents did, and they don't know how. An economy that no longer seems to be working for anyone has made socialists out of an entire generation of young people, and even some of the older fellows. Surprising to see this in a game story, and it very clearly captures the times.
This is quite a story. Smart, nuanced, and even profound. It pulled me in and never let me go. If you can enjoy a novel disguised as a game, this is a must-play.

Spoilerless reflections on Zootopia
Posted 9 years agoZootopia was pretty good. Not a single scalie to be found, and it had the predictable betrayal/makeup in the second act, but it had a fox, and it was fun.
The reason for the breakup is pretty flimsy and kinda comes out of nowhere. She really was stating the facts of the case, so why is Nick mad? Why did Judy say it at all, not knowing why it happened?
Really, does every movie have to have the contrived breakup/makeup in the second act?? Is there a checklist of things all movies must have in order to be appealing to the largest audience? Does this list include a flowchart, too, because I think audiences are catching on to the same plot points popping up in all movies! This isn't new of course, but it seems to be more prevalent than in years past.
...and why is this <<what a twist!>> allowed to exist? Everyone knows about it and what it can do, so why isn't it an illegal substance?! Why has no one done this before?! Having the answer right in the garden the whole time was awfully convenient.
Other than that, it's a fun movie, the mystery is interesting, and the way Judy and Nick solve the case confirms... it's not what you know, it's who you know... Well, it's a lot better than Big Hero 6. The formula isn't so obvious this time. It's fun, and I loved seeing how the bunny one-ups the fox every time he puts one over on her.

NEW STORY in an anthology
Posted 10 years agoMy real name has a new story in the Claw Your Way to Victory anthology. Discus Dog is about a wolf who discovers the sport he's followed all his life is much more than a sport. Very happy with how this one turned out. There's some violence, but otherwise it's clean. You can read a sample on FA:

Fallout 4 after all!
Posted 10 years agoSo my roommate's dad got him a PS4, and now I'm able to play Fallout 4 after all! I still suck with console controls, but I got by with Bioshock Infinite so I'll be fine.
Did anyone else notice that you get the dog at the Red Rocket gas station? That had to be intentional

Can't think, but i still have ideas
Posted 10 years agoMy brain has been in a fog since I finished Garth's story ( http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=805 ), and the trilogy prior. It always happens to me after a major project. In the past, I went entire years without writing I exhausted myself so thoroughly.
I've been kicking around a few ideas though. Since I can't seem to write anything, here's a glimpse into my brain:
1
Straight guy has high sex drive. Searches for women for years who can keep up with him, goes to brothels, buys hookers. Eventually he meets another man who has a drive as high as his, and before he knows it, he's doing the gay thing.
Not much of a concept, I know. Might be a detail inside a larger story, not the story itself. Could be a more romantic take on the whole thing, instead of my usual fetishy muscle stuff. Risks being too similar to Jake's List ( http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=531 ), but it could be a new angle to explore the dynamic.
2
A novel-length expansion of the Savior concept from Jake's List. Though it's only a video game within the book, I had started to build a universe unto itself with that. I tried writing it years ago, but gave up because I couldn't figure out the logic of what was happening.
Game concepts don't always make logical sense, and trying to make a serious story around an overly-muscled lion who cuts people to bits to free their souls isn't easy to rationalize, but I do think there is a serious story in there. I haven't given up thinking I could make something good of it.
(... if "the muscular, warrior lion" wasn't already a cliche in the furry world. Come on, the male lion is one of the least warriorly animals we know--why do we have this image of him as a fighter?? It's only by virtue of his size! We think surely someone with that much muscle wouldn't have more in common with Garfield than a gladiator! Reality is so disappointing, which is why we have furry!)
I dunno if I would make this an adult story for my Tagenar name, or a serious, real-name fantasy/sci-fi story along the lines of Huvek ( http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=729 ). I tend to think the idea is too serious for a Tagenar story, but perhaps it's time Tagenar wrote something besides slice-of-life gay muscle stories.
Sometimes maintaining two names seems more trouble than it's worth.
3
Another Tagenar story idea explores the emotions of transgenderism. But instead of showing them directly, change them to being trans-species.
I'm thinking a horse never felt right about being a horse. He likes the water way too much, and he wants to be an otter. Going through the physical changes makes him happy, but also alienates a lot of his friends.
This is an idea that will require a lot of research to avoid becoming ridiculous and insulting. It involves emotions I myself have not felt, and this is always dangerous.
It's just an idea, and it may or may not be something I will pursue. There's a lot of potential in this one, but I dunno if there's enough story for a full novel. Might be a short story.
*
I can't think about these things right now. I'm in pain, and I'm still in a fog after finishing the last trilogy, plus Garth's story on top of that. Ideas are all I have right now, and until I have recharged, I am going to let them cook.

like nothing you've seen be-fur?
Posted 10 years agoSo apparently the furry world is already in love with Zootopia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9lmhBYB11U&)
...whaddya mean "like nothing you've seen be-fur???"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKYFXMzompY (Chicken Little)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boOsfs903tM (Ducktales)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2igjYFojUo (Fantastic Mr. Fox)
This is the same studio that brought us Frozen (a movie of half-done ideas and a sappy, forced message about love), and Big Hero Six was the formula for a superhero film laid bare for all to see. It should have been amazing, but it was so formulaic it sucked all the energy out of it.
I'm not excited, in light of Disney's more recent releases, but I'm still hopeful. It *does* have a fox in it, so it's bound to be good, isn't it?

Status of Coach
Posted 11 years agoThe next Tagenar book, still tentatively called Don't Call Me Coach, has ground to a halt. The first draft is written, and it is roughly 60,000 words, and that's as far as I've gotten.
It's been long enough for me to draft it, but I think I am too burned out from the big project I was also writing at the time.
I typically write a tagenar story as a means of breaking out of a story I'm writing under my real name. Stories under my real name typcially feature rigid world-building, and my tagenar stories are very loose worlds, so they're a breath of fresh air to write. I wrote Coach in a rush between drafts of the big project, not as a break-out from a rigid world.
That's exactly how the book reads. Rush, rush, rush. Now I'm braindead from the trilogy I just wrote and I'm in no shape to try to go back to fix this novel. I will eventually, but for now, foxie is drained. I don't even have a suitable short story in the works. I'd probably be a popular furry author if i were more prolific. So, head over to
jls to read about what I've been working on in the meantime.

Yeah, an actual website with actual stuff on it! Of course right now the only things there are samples of the novels, but I'm sure I'll think of something else to put there in the future.
I am working on a new story. Might turn into a novel, might just be a short story. Not sure yet, but keep an eye out and enjoy the delightfully minimal website!

New ninja turtles trailer
Posted 11 years agoSo I just saw this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCjsWpM9zFU
the new Ninja Turtles movie looks... creepy. Michael Bay's turtles are horrifyingly ugly. They're like The Next Mutation version of the turtles, but taller. And uglier. Really ugly. I've seen furry artists come up with better badass looks for them.
