Posted 11 years agoOkay, just wanted to make it official, on here. I've already updated on Facebook, but I know there are SOME folks here who don't read the "book of faces".
As of the VERY start of this year, I am now in a happily committed, monogamous relationship with
Lung Ma (Dragon Mamma). We've known each other for a little over two years, first meeting at Oklacon 9 (2011). Since then, we'd really only seen each other at cons, but eventually started chatting online. At Oklacon 11 (2013), we finally got a bit closer, but were still "just" friends. Then we started chatting online, a lot more...conversations led to ideas, ideas led to plans, plans led to visits, and now we're officially "an item".
I don't want this to become a "gush fest", so I'll keep this bit brief. If you don't already know her, Lung Ma is an amazing dragon, kind and gentle, but unafraid to share her opinion. At the same time, she's open to opposing viewpoints, if said views are based on solid fact and/or principles. She's packed a lot of living into her __ years, has been through a lot of hard times, yet still holds onto the wonder and playfulness of youth. She's probably one of the most mature-yet-joyful friends I've ever met. I can only hope I continue to be worthy of her love, for as long as I breathe.
To paraphrase:
"I'm not a smart 'coon...but I know what love is."

Oklacon Journal. ...and you thought YOURS was late!
Posted 12 years agoOkay, finally getting around to this. Those who pay attention know that I don't post journals often, and tend to be "late to the party", both figuratively AND literally. I'm actually gonna try to keep this short, as I have a habit of typing WAY too much in these journals. Got to catch up with some old friends, and make a few new ones. All in all, it was a VERY fun Oklacon for me. I'm not gonna go into the drama of dealing with work. If you have to ask, you REALLY don't wanna know, and if you don't have to ask, you already know more than you wanted to.
I basically treat cons almost like giant, weekend-long furmeets, typically socializing with fellow furs, rather than going to panels and the like. And I know I'm gonna miss several folks when I do this, but if I hung out with you, and don't mention you here, I apologize in advance.
I got the chance to spend a LOT of time with my very good friends,
Kimmy/Mitsy,
Nardi, and their new-ish friend, the cuteness-overloaded, adorable
Kitsy. There was another newly-attending fur, who didn't really even have a fursona as yet, camping right next to them...she didn't even have a name, but was christened
the~burrito~named~refried over the weekend. She's some sort of kitty, but wrapped up in blankets, vaguely resembles a burrito...lol
I also got to spend a good bit of time with other friends, like the "old soul" who still manages to be adorable in her own way,
Lung Ma (Dragon Mamma)...my best friend, almost from the time I first moved to Oklahoma,
serenachaotica (didn't spend as much time with her as I probably should've, but things happen. *hugz to Serena*) ...and being entertained by the vocal effects of
Blu, inspired by backrubs and scritches.
And speaking of entertainment, that was provided in spades (or maybe clubs?) by the Bard of Oklacon,
corsi...and the always amusing/hilarious
skylorforscythe, of "Uncle Skylor's Story Time" fame.
Finally, there were many other friends there, with whom I didn't get to spend nearly as much time as I'd have liked.
Crys the Hybrid was quite busy most of the weekend, but got a couple hugz...
nateday was likewise holed up in the Artist's Alley through most of the con, but got SOME fresh air...chatted a little with
seagullprophet, though I see her at local meets, occasionally...most likely, I got into some philosophical chat or other at some point, with
Alby, as usual...briefly watched
salty chase down some poor prey as Fire, during Predator/Prey...
Kylantha was only there one night, due to her new baby, but I got to say hi & give hugz, anyway...saw
miss.anthro briefly...REALLY should've hung out with
misora at least a bit more...joked a little with
keefur about his age, as usual...saw the always silly
kitblufox at least for a few moments...saw
drazil and
Dobie in passing (though the latter, I'm sure I HEARD more often than saw) ...and of course, I saw
Baral, at some point.
And then there was the drinking. Oh, the drinking! Even at past cons, I don't think I've ever had THAT much to drink. I didn't throw up, but Friday morning, my stomach was a bit queasy, and I had either a horribly annoying hangover, or a vicious sinus headache. Or some combination of milder versions of both.
Apparently I was more drunk than I wanted to admit, adamantly claiming that I was merely "heavily buzzed". It seems that, when buzzed, I get mellow, and get a case of the giggles. But as my throat would attest, for a day or two after getting back, I gather that I can be a rather loud drunk.
I was told by at least one individual that I got a bit obnoxious, so to those who may have been annoyed by my volume, I sincerely apologize. I'm not saying I won't drink as much, next time, though I'll likely try to pace myself. First, to avoid getting THAT sloshed, and second, to make the booze last a bit longer.
All in all, I had a very fun Oklacon, and certainly plan on going back for as long as I can afford the gas and food. Next up: Wild Nights! April can't POSSIBLY get here fast enough!

Job search. Yes, for real. Finally.
Posted 12 years agoOkay, those of you who know me pretty well, know that I rarely ask for help. I still have my job at the casino, but I absolutely HATE it. I'm not desperate to take just ANY job, but don't have a degree to let me be TOO choosy. I'm not limited to any particular field, but it'd most likely have to be entry-level, or close to it. I've got PLENTY of customer service experience, mostly at the retail end, but some other stuff. I'm VERY comfortable working with electronics, but I'm open to MOST anything, at this point.
I'm not looking for offers here (I know better, but won't ignore serious ones). I'm looking for leads, plain and simple. I need something south of Oklahoma City (Blanchard/Newcastle/Norman/parts of Moore). And I need to make $10/hr, 34 or more hours per week. I'd like something where I could start after Oklacon, (like Nov. 1) or somewhere that they'd work around it.
If you've seen something posted in these areas, or if you have a (serious) suggestion, or even know someone to ask, please let me know. Thanks, everyone!
[edit]
And after looking at a map, I'd also consider something in Chickasha, Purcell, or Lindsay, as well.

ATTENTION STAR WARS FANS! Comics available!
Posted 12 years agoHey, y'all! Looking to get some money together, so that I'm not scraping bottom until Wild Nights. And since my art skill level equals "fail", my best remaining option is to sell some of my stuff.
I have quite a few trade paperback collections that - eventually - I plan to replace with the newer Omnibus volumes. But in the meantime, I've read almost all the ones I have, and could REALLY use the cash in these next few weeks. Anything that I'm willing to let go, I'll only be ask roughly what a given collection is going for on ebay or Amazon. Almost all my TPB's are either in like new condition or VERY close to it, no marks, no page creases, and fairly light to almost no edge/corner wear.
I have most or all of the "Star Wars" / "Star Wars: Republic" collections (including every "Clone Wars" volume from that run), Most or all of the "Star Wars: Empire" collections, the original 7-volume set "A Long Time Ago..." that first reprinted the entire Marvel run, and MANY more.
Now, there ARE quite a few collections that I don't have, but I may even have a couple that are not-so-common. If you're even curious, just message me, and I can get you a full list of what I'm willing to part with. Even if you're not interested, but know someone who is, let me know. I'd offer these on ebay or Amazon myself, but I'm really not crazy about dealing with their listing fees and such. Plus this way, if you're local, you don't have to worry about shipping!

History, Politics, and Peaceful Revolution
Posted 13 years agoThe founding fathers set up the constitution so that, when any part of it is affected through the amendment process, such that a portion of the text is rendered inactive, said text does not get actually removed from copies of the document. Rather, the original text is preserved, but is noted as no longer being in effect. Such is the case with the "3/5 rule" where, for the purpose of representation, slaves would only count as 3/5 of a person each. With the abolition of slavery, any such passages are no longer in effect, but the original text remains, to remind us that such WAS the case at the start. In other words, the text is left intact in order to remind us of mistakes that have been corrected, and of how impasses were resolved through various compromises.
I feel that the founders intended our Constitution to be the framework and foundation of a republic, that would be "of the people, by the people, and for the people". That it was to serve as a template for the states, that they couldn't override it, but that it allowed states to experiment with their own legislative solutions to more localized problems, socially or economically. Further, it was supposed to guide the states in how to allow local communities much the same freedom to come up with their own solutions, and in turn that local governments would leave as much as possible up to neighborhoods, families, and ultimately the individual. In short, the intent was to create a situation where, if this Constitution were followed both in letter AND in spirit, essentially, the government would "get out of my way!"
During its first 140 years or so, while not always followed strictly, the Constitution was at least respected by most legislators, and other political folks. As a result, we survived many wars, abolished slavery (eventually), and had many decades of great prosperity. While the individual was allowed to prosper, more often than not, he (or she) DID. And those that failed, most often got back up, dusted themselves off, and tried again, usually applying whatever lessons they learned from their failure. Was there poverty? Sure. Discrimination? You bet! But was there opportunity for nearly anyone who wanted to try? Absolutely!
So what happened? Did we go so terribly wrong because some people were lucky enough to have skills beyond those of their fellow man, and created vast, corporate empires? Did we go wrong when we didn't tax these massive, multinational corporations enough, giving to the poor, downtrodden souls who were unable to work through no fault of their own? Or was it those terrible miserly rich folks who inherited multiple millions of dollars, and wouldn't share with those who deserved it more than they?
Or was it that we did TOO much of that? Did we perhaps prolong the Great Depression, by creating a whole new class of people who depended on government for their next meal, their clothing, or even their very lives? Did we do too much, expanding those programs beyond the essentials of food, clothing and shelter, providing comforts and luxuries such as electricity, hot and cold running water, and eventually telephone service? And all just for being "unable" to work? Did we, perhaps, actually create a situation where 47% of people in this country actually ARE dependent on government programs of one kind or another, just to make it through life?
Now...am I denying that there ARE people who are actually unable to earn a "living wage", pay for their own food, clothing, shelter, and anything else that may keep them going? No. I'm also not denying that there are people who are unable to physically, mentally, or emotionally care for themselves, and DO need the help of other people. What I AM denying is that the government HAS to be the one to provide it, and that they HAVE to acquire the means to provide it through coercion in the form of the Income Tax.
There have been numerous solutions presented for many of these problems and inequalities that would actually include making government smaller and less involved in our daily lives. Not the least of these is a plan called the FairTax, which would replace the ridiculously bloated federal income tax code with a consumption-based, point-of-sale tax. This alone would save both corporations and individuals enormous amounts, just in eliminating almost any compliance issues. There have also been solutions that involve giving people more options in how they purchase insurance, reduce frivolous lawsuits (loser pays), or force more transparency in government.
What any of these things lack, however, is enough people with enough conviction to elect people who will actually enact these kinds of policies, laws, and reforms. And those elected have to have the conviction to actually stand by their principles, in the face of lobbyists, and in the face of opponents with lesser conviction, but lesser scruples. When enough voters gain enough conviction to elect leaders (and not just politicians) with these qualities, that will result in a most peaceful, yet most effective revolution.

AEROSMITH!!! Super excited!
Posted 13 years agoHey everyone! I'm gonna be going to see Aerosmith in Dallas, on July 28th! I MAY have someone lined up to go with me, but if not, I don't really want to go entirely on my own. If anyone I know wants to go with me, and can get me money for their ticket ($62 and some change for the cheap seats) within the next week or so, please let me know.
I'd LIKE to split the cost of parking & gas, but that's not a big sticking point. But I MUST insist on taking only someone who can pay for at least their own ticket. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Aerosmith live, as I've missed out on their shows TWICE now. Also, Cheap Trick will be opening for them, so it's not like they're bringing along some no-name band. They're not one of my favorites, but I DO like their stuff.
So, if you wanna rock out, and maybe get to hear 2 or more NEW Aerosmith tunes, hit me up!

Nuking stuff here
Posted 13 years agoJust in case anyone pays much attention to what I comment on and such...I've had such a time keeping up with journals and submissions, that I pretty much gave up figuring out what to read and what to skip. So instead, I'm just gonna go ahead and nuke all the "new journal" and "new submission" alerts I've gotten, since the last time I cleared everything out (a few THOUSAND of each). So if I don't comment on something you've posted recently, I'm not ignoring you...I just missed it.
Peter & Company ANIMATED - Help make it happen!
Posted 13 years agoWhat if your childhood imaginary friend were actually your guardian angel?
Such is the concept behind the Peter & Company ( peterandcompany.com ) comic, by the very talented Jonathan Ponikvar.
peterandcompany is his FA account, with all but the earliest strips in the series posted here. To read the strip from the start, go here: http://www.peterandcompany.com/2005/01/01/strip-1/
Anyway, Jon has been working with an animation studio to iron out details for putting together a pilot for an animated series, based on the comic. This pilot could then be shopped around to the various cable networks that might pick up such a series, like Cartoon Network and the like. As I understand it, he now has everything lined up except funding, which will be covered in the form of donations. Rather than do the typical FA post asking for donations (which typically gets mixed results, at best), he's created a donation campaign, on a site designed just for this sort of thing.
I'm a big fan of this series, and would LOVE to see it make the jump to animation. So please, go read the comic, and if it doesn't capture your imagination, you're a heartless...(ahem)... Er...and if it captures your imagination, please go here - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects.....animated-pilot - and donate. Any amount will help, and starting with a mere $10 donation, you get ARTZ!
Personally, I'd love to be able to donate $100, to get an autographed, sketch-added copy of the actual book. Hell, I WISH I could afford $1500 to be made a permanent character in the comic, but...*sigh* Anyway, there are PLENTY of other levels in between there, or you can just donate out of the kindness of your heart, and excess of your wallet. If nothing else, at least check out the comic. I think it's a really great story, anyway...

Aerosmith - "Amazing" (selected lyrics, to avoid stupid DMCA/copyright issues)
...
There were times in my life
When I was goin insane
Tryin' to walk through the pain
When I lost my grip / And I hit the floor
I thought I could leave / but I couldn't get out the door
I was so sick and tired / Of livin' a lie
I was wishin' that I would die
...
That one last shots a permanent vacation
And how high can you fly with broken wings
Life's a journey, not a destination
And I just can't tell just what tomorrow brings
You have to learn to crawl / Before you learn to walk
But I just couldn't listen / To all that rightous talk
...
Its amazing
With the blink of an eye
I finally saw the light
Its amazing
That when the moment arrives
You know you'll be alright
...
I know this will come as a shock to some on here, but not everyone is cut out to be an artist. When I say that, I don't mean that not everyone has artistic skill, or that some should just "keep it to themselves". What I mean is this: not even everyone who even has a HIGH DEGREE of artistic skill can do everything it takes to be FINANCIALLY successful as an artist.
True, it takes that skill, but it also takes a keen business sense, the ability to generate demand, the ability to meet that demand with a quality and quantity of supply (art), the discipline to not "give away the shop". Also it takes an incredible sense of balance to post JUST the right amount of free examples of work to generates greater demand, without at the same time meeting that generated demand with the same free supply. It also takes balancing expenses with income from commissions and the like. At the same time, you have to find that "sweet spot" where your art is neither undervalued and folks come to expect bargains all the time, but neither have you priced yourself out of the market, where folks just go, "yeah, but I could get something from _____ for half that."
Okay, you may be asking, "Wait...this was supposed to be encouraging, right?" Yes. So far, I'm simply recognizing that, to be a professional artist, it takes QUITE a lot, especially if you want to do so as your sole source of income. That said, there is PLENTY of room in the fandom for those who wish to create art, simply for art's sake, as a hobby that will hopefully pay for itself, or even just to make a little extra cash for luxuries, going to cons, etc. I've noticed several furs over the past few months writing about how they were going to just quit drawing, painting, or whatever else, because it couldn't pay the bills, or whatever else.
DON'T DO THAT!!!
Many on here can't make a living with art. Is that REALLY so surprising? Many on here (myself included) are lucky to be able to draw any better than stick figures. Even if one can't make a living on art, it doesn't mean that art has no place in their lives. While some CAN make a living - and even good money - on art, most work a full-time "day job", and do art simply for recognition from friends. The way I look at it, if you're good enough that your art pays for your supplies and covers your expenses in getting to cons, you're already ahead of the game. And if you can make an extra couple hundred bucks every few months AT a con, you're doing better than most furs!

Posted 14 years agoDrama: ignored! (READ or don't be surprised)
Posted 14 years agoYes, there was a particular journal that set me off, though it is but one of many, so the journal in question isn't particularly remarkable, aside from the fact that it was YET ANOTHER drama journal. So please understand that this is NOT about any one fur, or any one journal. This is about how I will respond to drama of any kind, from here on out.
Effective immediately, anyone I'm watching who posts a journal that tears down another fur, I'm going to un-watch them. I'm not going to block them, and I'm not going to call anyone out, either by name OR implication. I will have a FEW exceptions to my un-watching rule, mainly those who I consider close friends. Even with those, however, I will likely send them a note, discouraging these kind of posts. I may overlook posts where there's an insignificant bit of drama, or if it comes off as simply joking sarcasm or somesuch. Blatant name-calling or similar derogatory comments will be unlikely to be skipped, however.
I've finally realized that there's no way I can get anyone to stop talking about anyone else, because drama is a lot like fire. But like fire, take away the oxygen, and it ends pretty quick. So I'm simply going to stop paying attention to those who talk bad about those I care about, and focus instead on my friends, and things I'm interested in.
My basic policy from here on out is,
1) "If you're badmouthing my friends, I don't want to hear it." and
2) "If you're a friend of mine, badmouthing anyone else, don't ask my opinion. You don't want it."
Depending on who you are, I MAY give warnings before un-watching. But don't count on it. I can't STOP the drama, but I can dam well stop LISTENING to it!

Oklacon "Critter Caravan"
Posted 14 years agoWell...due to the underwhelming response to my previous "Critter Caravan" journal, I've decided that I'll just be leaving from the Oklahoma City area on Wednesday, October 19, at 4 PM. If I actually get any response to this journal, I'll show up at the Denny's off I-240 at the Pennsylvania Ave. exit. (note me for directions) If I get no response to this, I'll just drive straight from home, picking up my passengers, without stopping at Denny's. So if you want to meet up beforehand, reply to this. If not, see ya at Oklacon!
Oklacon - "Critter Caravan" launch time options: your plan?
Posted 14 years agohttp://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2807043/
I'm planning a "Critter Caravan" for Oklacon, much like we did for Wild Nights. This time, though,I need a little input on the best time to leave. it looks like no one is interested, so I've decided to scrap the caravan, unless I hear from anyone that they want to join up.
I heard directly from BlueOtter that he plans to open registration until around 7PM on Wednesday (October 19th), and A-Frames will be available to those who preregistered, starting that afternoon. Also, he said that if we arrive after reg closes, and we need to stay in the A-Frames that night & just hit registration first thing in the morning, he'd be okay with that.
Basically, I'venarrowed the options down to decided on:
1) Wednesday early launch: leave around 4 PM, arrive around 6 PM in time for registration.
2) Wednesday late launch: leave between 6-7 PM, arrive between 8-9 PM, and hit reg in the morning.
3) Thursday morning launch: leave between 7-8 AM, arriving between 9-10 AM, catching the early registration rush.
Please postwhich option would work best for you, and whether you'll be driving or need a ride. We'll be meeting up at the Oklahoma City south side Denny's {if anyone shows interest} an hour or so before launch, so everyone has a chance to chow down before we leave.

Politics! (Now that I have your attention...)
Posted 14 years agoActually, this IS about politics, but probably not what most on here would expect.
Over the past several years, I have heard some VERY disparaging terms directed toward those, both groups and individuals, who favor limited government and maximum liberty. "Teabagger", "right winger", "wing nuts", "religious right", etc. etc. etc. In contrast, terms lobbed at those wanting larger government and more regulation of EVERYTHING (including your childrens' diets), have USUALLY been assigned labels in accordance with their political beliefs, such as "Socialist", "Progressive", and (as I've discovered, the strangely ironic) "Liberal".
I can't speak for others, but I know that I, for one, support the goals (in general) of the Tea Party movement. By and large, they DO line up with my own opinions. Unfortunately, most folks not familiar with these opinions have their own ideas of what these opinions are. Until recently, I would have considered myself a conservative, but I have come to see that most political labels are highly inadequate to describe someone's true values. The closest I have found to a term that describes my political views is "libertarian", intentionally leaving the "L" lowercase. I have come to the realization that I can embrace no political party fully, but that the general ideals of libertarianism are those that I am closest to.
VERY broadly stated, it is this:
"Government, stay out of my wallet and my home!"
I do NOT believe in violent revolution. I believe in a peaceful, honest revolution of ideas, the essence of which is contained in two documents and one collection of letters: The Constitution of the United States (including all amendments, though with a select 2 or 3 repealed), The Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers.
And before anyone decides to be a smartass, I'm not talking about reinstating slavery or repealing voting privileges for anyone. I'm talking, most specifically about the 16th and 17th amendments, the 16th (Income Tax) being replaced by the FairTax ( http://www.fairtax.org/ ), and the repealing the 17th to restore the Senate as a body to represent the STATES, leaving just the House to represent the people directly.
Basically, the US Federal Government, over the last century or so, has greatly exceeded its bounds as laid out in the Constitution. So much so, that if the Founding Fathers could see us today, THEY might very well understand why some folks (again, not including myself) DO favor violent revolution.
I, on the other hand, believe we need someone of the mindset of a MLK Jr. Someone who believes in nonviolent resistance, and can express the Tea Party's vision of smaller government eloquently enough, yet insistently enough, to make Washington PAY ATTENTION.
And finally, I think the biggest problem our gargantuan government poses, is the kinds of people it attracts to run for office. Even the most libertarian-minded individual who runs, STILL forms his (or her) platform around "what will get me the most votes", rather than "where are the SOLUTIONS to our problems". SOMEONE needs to stand up and present a plan to move as much of what are currently government, entitlement programs to privately-funded, privately-run charities.
For the biggest part of the last century, it can be said that "charity begins with the IRS". When are we going to get back to "charity begins at home"?
*waits patiently for the flaming to start*

Tanooki needs a hat!
Posted 14 years agoOkay, so I'm working on a mental redo of my fursuit, but I definitely need to get the ears taken care of first. And I've finally decided that I need a hat to put my new ears on. Now there's two things I need to decide:
1) what kind of hat...and
2) ears attached or poking through?
I'd REALLY like some input on this, as I've already got some ideas for hats, but don't want to bias anyone. So, what kind of hat should Tanooki wear?

As details are finalized, they will be posted in the "Ride Share Board" at http://wildnights.org/forum

Introducing Tanooki: furry and mundane
Posted 14 years ago(The following entry is pasted over from my original account, k1darkknight )
(Journal Entry: February 18th, 2011 04:21 AM)
Hello fellow furs! Well, I guess this is where I'm introducing myself, finally...
As a furry: I'm a raccoon (biped/anthro), grey with black markings, curious but skittish (the latter rarely showing through in person), and always looking for a snack (much more obvious aspect of my fursona and rl self). As a "hooman": I'm a 35 year old ( *breaks out his walker* ) straight male (yes, we exist in the fandom), who has played online as a furry for at least 5 years, but probably quite a bit longer.
I honestly don't remember a particular moment when I "became" a furry or "realized" I was one. I think it was actually a kind of gradual exposure to the fandom. Early on, I had no idea people dressed up as their characters, or even met offline. I think I just saw it as sort of a particular genre of roleplay (or more to the point, "cyber" as mundanes call online yiff).
Fast forward to October 2010, and I'm attending my first furry convention (Oklacon 8), wearing my first ears (actually, a mass-produced raccoon-character hat. The morning after I arrive, I pick up my first (and so far only) commissioned fursuit/accessory pieces - raccoon ears and tail, purchased in advance from
As for my mundane self...actually, not so 'mundane', but very 'eclectic'? Or maybe that's AD...(oooh, shiny...)
...
Hmm, what? Oh yeah, mundane self... Let's see...I'm a big Star Wars fan, I like anime (really? a furry who likes anime??), I like most music, but mainly rock (classic, modern, 80's...), and I'm a semi-casual gamer (PC and Xbox 360). I LOVE computers, 'gadgets', and just technology in general (usually), I work retail (ugh), and I'm politically libertarian. You'll notice I didn't say "A" libertarian, nor did I use a capital "L". Suffice it to say I'm not talking about the Party.
Anyway, I'll expand on that in my next post, as well as why I'm going to be talking about things both furry AND mundane in my journals here.
But I'm off. In case you couldn't tell.
