Comic in the works... also, Commissions are - Open!
General | Posted 15 years agoSo, for those of you who don't look at my art blog, which is most of you, I've been working on a smutty, 13-page comic for a few weeks. I haven't revealed too much about it yet, but here are some of the salient details for you to look forward to:
• It is male/male and male/FtM, and it's multi-species
• The art is done traditionally, with markers, in greyscale
• There is explicit sex (or other dirty stuff) on EVERY PAGE except the last one
• It has something vaguely resembling a plot
• The entire comic will be available for free, right here
• It will debut within the next week!
The title? "Somnium Lupus"... the wolf's dream.
Between getting unintentionally high on marker fumes for the comic, I'd like to take on a few commissions to clear my head and keep my digital skills limber. To whit, I'm opening up for 5 regular Iron Artist (discount) slots, as well as 2 soft-shaded color commissions.
SOFT SHADED
$55 for one character, full body, inked and digitally colored, with a simple background. Example.
+$20 per additional character.
+$13 per character with extra limbs (taur, wings, etc)
Regular sketch approval policy stands (revisions welcome for rough sketch and clean sketch).
Turnaround: approx. 2-4 weeks.
IRON ARTIST
$15 for a full-body pencil sketch + digital texture. Example.
$25 for flat colors. Example.
+$10 per additional character.
+$5 per taur/wings/etc.
No extra charge for adult/mature content!
No approval sketches shown.
Turnaround: approx. 1 week.
Shipping of original (optional): $5 North America; $10 everywhere else.
Can be requested and paid for after completion.
PayPal or AlertPay. USD. In advance.
US money orders also accepted. Work will not begin until payment is received.
High-rez (400dpi) and web-sized versions will be sent to your PayPal email! Please tell me in advance if you'd prefer I use a different email.
NO-FLY LIST
"Private" commissions I'm never ever allowed to post; cub porn; rape (though power play is welcomed and encouraged!); "internal" shots; vomit; death; gore (though blood is ok); mech; complicated costumes/clothes (I'm just bad at it); copyrighted characters you don't own; obvious doppelgangrs of copyrighted characters; rude behavior toward the artist; haggling.
Please read my Terms of Service before requesting a commission.

RIP Brian Jacques
General | Posted 15 years agoIf you haven't heard the news that I just heard, Brian Jacques, the creator of the Redwall book series, died a couple of days ago.
I'm... not even sure what to make of this. Intellectually, of course, I know that everyone dies, and presumably most of the older people I know (of) will die while I am still alive. But some people miraculously fool us into believing they are immortal. Brian Jacques was one of those people for me.
I definitely wasn't the most rabid Redwall fan - I sort of got tired of the stories somewhere around book 11 or 12, as the overall plots were often repetitive - but a good number of years of my life were marked by the creations of this man. I was a member of the official fan club. One of the first anthros I ever drew was Martin. When we fostered a black-and-white puppy with badger-like head markings, I wanted to name her Constance. I'd lapse into mole speech while answering questions in class or talking with my friends. Stashed somewhere in my parents' house is an entire box full of just Redwall books - and funny, I was just thinking of asking them to ship the box to me so I could re-read them.
Mr. "Jakes" is dead. I just... this is just weird, like when Michael Jackson died. I'm... I don't know.
This really sucks.
Eulalia.

General | Posted 15 years agoI just wanted to say a big, grandiose THANK YOU to everyone who comments on my art, faves it, watches me, notes me, commissions me, pimps me on their userpage, and generally gives me any kind of appreciation. I appreciate YOU!
I know I don't respond to everyone who takes the time to give me some love; frankly, those generic "Thanks for watching me" shouts kind of annoy me. Responding to every picture comment with "Thank you" is tedious for me, and for you it would amount to receiving a form letter, no matter how much I meant it when I typed it. Plus, my internet connection is veeery spotty, so if I were even to make the attempt of responding to everyone, every time, I'd spend 6 hours a day just waiting for pages to load.
A journal post like this is pretty generic, too, but given the circumstances, it's the best I've got right now. And I'm giving it to you. THANK YOU!

General | Posted 15 years agoMoney is so tight for me right now I can't even say, but this just broke my heart.
Sporty Pup needs heart surgery, and to get it, he needs money. Without the surgery, he'll die. He has a 3-year-old son.
If you were about to commission me, give the money to him instead. If you were about to renew your WoW account, give the money to him instead. Donate straight up or bid on one of the charity auctions.
If you're as broke as I am, at least spread the word.

EDIT - I did some finagling and found a few bucks I can manage without. If I could scrounge it up, SO CAN YOU (presuming you're not literally homeless).

How do you find new artists to watch?
General | Posted 15 years agoThis is one of those "just curious" questions I've been wondering for a while.
Me, I usually find new artists through the favorites lists of artists I already watch. Sometimes, also, when I see someone post a comment somewhere, if their icon stands out to me, I'll frequently click on over and give their gallery a go-through. This is phenomenally shallow, of course, and unreliable, since many incredible artists have derpy or goofy icons (case in point:
birds), and many people have fantastic icons who don't even upload art, thanks to the magical phenomenon of icon commissions. But sometimes I'll happen on a really great artist that way.
I'm also likely to watch someone if I see them leaving especially intelligent or poignant comments somewhere, and their user page or journals contain evidence of a brilliant/interesting mind that I'd like to know more about.
How about you?
Do you browse? Search? Do automatic watch-backs when someone watches you?

Badges - Question for artists
General | Posted 15 years agoSo I want to start offering traditional-media badges, and I'm shopping around for a good, cheap supplier of holders and clips.
Where do you get yours from? Do you hit up a brick-and-mortar supply store or order online? How are their prices & service?
Thanks a ton for any and all input!
Terms of Service

My dog is such a dork XD
General | Posted 15 years agoI just had to share this. My dog found his lost kong toy buried in the couch, and when I threw it for him, it bounced and landed in his water dish. Now it's sitting there, only halfway submerged (it's a very small dish, sized for a cat), and my dog finds this extremely distressing. He keeps whining and giving me big, guilt-inducing "help me" eyes. I tried sitting next to the bowl and encouraging him to get the kong himself, but he acted like I was trying to drown him and wouldn't get within a foot of it. I don't know what his damage is. But I'm refusing on principle to get it out for him.
This is a dog, mind you, who has enthusiastically dived into Lake Superior (and Lake Michigan, and several different ponds and smaller lakes) to fetch sticks and balls.
What a goof.
(Also, commissions are still open!)

I'm back
General | Posted 15 years ago...OK, I've actually been back for a couple of days. I've been working on commissions, though not as hard as I should've been. I've been distracted by a sudden large change in my plans for the future, but... Really, I have no excuse. Please accept my apologies.
Commissioners, expect your pictures within the next 3 days or less. (EDIT - make that 4 days... ie, Wednesday.)
...If Gmail will actually upload the file attachments before the next ice age. *pokes the internet* X(
_________
ETA: Commissioners: Please contact me when you receive your pictures, even if you don't need any corrections! I just want to make sure you actually *got* them. This internet connection has been getting seriously senile, and it's got me concerned.

Slight change of plans
General | Posted 15 years ago...So. To make a very long and convoluted story much shorter, the car rental place shafted us at (literally) the last minute, and although I should've been at my parents' by now, I'm still at home, and won't be able to see them at all this year. This sucks major salty balls, because the only time I've been able to see my family in the past two years was for a funeral this past Fourth of July. The reason I haven't mentioned this sooner is because I've been moping around the apartment since Monday being depressed over this.
However, I will still be going out of town. I'm heading back to my old town to stay with friends, so my partner and I don't have to spend Xmas in a vacuum. This town is MUCH closer than my parents' place, so our senile old car will actually be able to survive the trip.
This means a couple of things for people waiting on commissions from me:
1. The dates I will be away from home will be different. We're leaving either tomorrow or the next day, and won't be getting back until AFTER New Year's. So you probably won't see anything until Jan. 2 or 3 at the earliest. I'm sorry.
2. Since we'll be staying with some bawdy, somewhat messy friends instead of the serene, isolated mountain house my parents have, I may not be able to get as much art done over holiday as I'd originally hoped. This shouldn't mean much more than a couple of extra days tacked on to the wait; if it does end up meaning more than that, I'll let ya'll know as soon as I know.

Commissions FULL + out of contact
General | Posted 15 years agoIron Artist slots are all filled up. Please refrain from asking me about commissions until I open up more slots. It won't be too long, I promise.
I'm skipping town bright 'n' early tomorrow, and will be out of contact for a couple of days, or however long it takes to drive to my folks' house.
RE: Hacker drama
I didn't really have anyone's intimate details in my notes beyond email addresses, but in case it makes anyone feel better, I've deleted all but the most recent/innocuous ones.
Personally, I am utterly unconcerned about the whole hacking/leaking affair. There are reasons for this, but I'm in such a state of *unconcerned yawn* that I can't be bothered to put them into words right now.
I'm sorry if this sounds cold. It's my default reaction whenever I'm surrounded by hordes of screaming, stampeding people (IRL or metaphorically) who can't seem to conceive of someone NOT getting up in arms. It's how I keep my balance.
It works.

Out of Town
General | Posted 15 years agoHey ya'll,
I'm heading to my parents' for Decemberween. I'm leaving the 20th and getting back on the 29th. There's also a possibility I'll be gone again over New Year's, though that's not set in stone.
I'm bringing along my sketchbook and associated paraphernalia, as well as my computer and tablet, and I do plan on working on some art while I'm there. I'm leaving my scanner at home, though - I'm not THAT crazy! - so if you want to commission me before next year, be aware that I won't be able to scan it until the 30th. I'll be poking my head in here from time to time.
Commissions will be closing on Sunday the 19th toward the evening, and won't be reopening until January. Commission info is here.

Wishlist!
General | Posted 15 years agoStep 1
Make a post in your journal containing your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple to really big. The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
If you wish for real-life things, make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where folks could get in touch with you.
Step 2
Surf around other lists to see who has posted their list. If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream for free--do it. You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special
Step 3: The List
In no particular order, numbered only for convenience.
1. Commission me! (link) Art is the only source of income I've got right now that isn't a) welfare, gifts from relatives, or other charity, or b) plasma donations, which are somewhat degrading after a while. If you can't/won't commission me (or already have), then please consider passing on the word! I know there are tons of artists out there right now clamoring for commissioners' attention, but I'm still just starting to build up a reputation, and for that I need your help!
2. Donations of money, items, time, positive publicity, or whatever else you can think of to Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary. I volunteered there for years and can give you my personal guarantee that 100% of donation money benefits the animals *directly.* It's not funded by government or grants; it runs completely off of donations and volunteerism. (Donations are tax-deductible in the US.)
3. Pez dispensers, new or used. Nothing collectible, because I'm going to drill holes in it. (To make a humidifier to put inside my ukulele case.) For some reason, I can't find them anywhere! I'm partial to the ones with Timon & Pumbaa. :P
4. Gift art! I don't really expect this, since I haven't done a whole heck of a lot with Tris, and my other characters have yet to see the light of day on FA, but if you should feel inspired. I'm also a fan of corgis, having a red-and-white Pembroke myself, and would love any art of this breed.
5. Don't expect this either, but: A bicycle trailer! By which I mean a trailer used to haul cargo with a bike, *not* something used for transporting the bike itself. Because my dog loves to go to the park, but it's too far for him to walk all the way there and back. And because my attempts to build a trailer myself have not gone well so far.
6. One of those little dishes that sits on the stove and holds the head of the big mixing spoon up off of the stove's surface. Whatsit? A spoon rest. Because food bakes onto the surface really fast with a gas-powered stove.
7. Two large, square Tidy Cats buckets with creased lids, like this. These make the BEST bicycle panniers. I don't want to buy the litter because I don't have any cats; I just want the empty buckets and lids.
8. A Kermit Clein poster. I've always wanted one and they're out of print.
9. Lasik eye surgery. So that I don't have to worry about how I'll survive the zombie apocalypse if one of the undead breaks my glasses during battle.
10. For the UN to reverse its recent vote, which essentially declared it internationally legal to arbitrarily execute people for being queer.
Also! Link me to your wish lists (I'm always short on money but if I can find some other way to be generous, I'd like that), and PM me if you need shipping info. :D

I guess I'm back... also, *price change*
General | Posted 15 years agoYeah. So after all that hype about taking weeks to fix my computer... I took it in to the shop yesterday, where they informed me they do all their repairs on-site, so shipping my laptop was unnecessary. They estimated 1-3 days for turnaround.
Well, I got back home, and about an hour and a half later they called me to say my laptop was all fixed up and ready for pickup.
...The repair went from two weeks to two hours. Granted, it had to spend the night there because I couldn't get back down to pick it up until today, but. Wow. I <3 Apple's service sometimes.
Not reopening commissions quite yet, though. I still have a few things to take care of first.
NOTICE for future commissioners:
Effective immediately, one taur-type character counts as 1.5 characters and will cost an additional $5.
Similarly, any other extra limbs (wings, etc) will also be another $5.
(A taur with wings, then, will be $10 above base price.)
I'm sorry to change this in the middle of the Iron Artist challenge, but if I'd known at the outset that I'd suddenly become a taur artist, I would've specified this surcharge from the beginning. It simply didn't occur to me at the time.
And, lest someone complain (though in all honesty, I have more faith in my watchers than that!), consider the following:
It turns out that I enjoy drawing taurs, and would like to continue doing so, but they're not exactly simple. Aside from the extra effort of physically drawing more, the planning stage is pretty involved. I have to find/invent a pose that looks good for a bipedal figure, AND a pose that looks good for a quadruped, AND a pose that looks good for both (which is another thing entirely). All told, we're looking at 2-6 hours of extra work - about as much time as it takes for a second character altogether.
Five bucks doesn't begin to cover this extra time/effort, but I ask it as a gesture of courtesy to myself. Understand.
Look for re-opening in about a week!

General | Posted 15 years agoMy computer is going to the doctor on Monday the 22nd. They have to ship it back to the factory for repairs. Tech support said that the whole process might take a couple of weeks, so... yep.
If you have anything to say to me, say it this weekend!
Otherwise, I'll see you guys in December with a new commission round opening up.
Ciao!

Status for November
General | Posted 15 years agoHere's my game plan for the next few weeks, as it pertains to arting:
1. Finish current Iron Artist commissions. Should take about a week, give or take a couple days.
2. Get my computer to the computer doctor. There's nothing wrong with its essential functions, but the disc drive is shot. Not only does this mean annoying little things like not being able to add my CDs to my iTunes, but also that I can't make backup CDs to help clear space off my hard drive. More direly, if something does go wrong with the OS or if, Dog forbid, I need a new hard drive again (an increasing probability as my computer ages) I won't be able to boot from the OS CD. My extended warranty expires around Thanksgiving (late this month), so I need to get this done ASAP.
3. I desperately need to see a dentist, and I'll probably need root canal. I'm going to try to take the opportunity to do so while my computer is out to lunch so that I can recover without the pressure of commissions. (This is assuming that I can get an appointment when I need to.)
4. Reunite with my computer and (hopefully) newly functional disc drive. Maybe take another few days off, maybe not, depending on how close we are to the annual turkey slaughter. Maybe do some personal art.
5. Reopen for Iron Artist round 2, ten slots. These will be done with plenty of time for Yule and Christmas (probably not for Chanukah, though, which is pretty early this year), so if you're contemplating holiday gift art (or holiday art for yourself), this will be the round to do it. Keep an eye on this journal for announcements.

General | Posted 15 years agoAgainst all better judgment, I'm going to make an attempt at NaNoWriMo this year. I have no idea what I'm going to write about, either. Probably werewolves. Or a road trip. It always comes back to road-tripping werewolves. But then, so does everything else in life.
If you want to be my writing buddy and loudly gloat over how much higher your word count is than mine, my user page is here.
ALSO!
I have two slots left open for this round of the Iron Artist challenge! Sketch for $15, flat colors for $25, and a smile on your face for free.

I'm in trouble... Commissions OPEN
General | Posted 15 years agoDon't ever think for a second that the universe isn't paying attention.
My only sources of income for the past... oh, all of 2010... are as follows:
• $45 a week from the unemployment office
• $25-$60 a week from selling - ahem, excuse me, donating plasma
• occasional, sporadic gifts of $20 or $100 from my way-too-generous-for-her-own-good grandmother
My expenses include $634 in rent, plus electricity ($25-35), dog food and vet care, student loan payments, health care premiums (for my state-sponsored welfare health insurance)... plus, of course, all the little things: dish soap, paper towels, band-aids, trash bags, that kind of thing.
For some strange reason (ok, mostly due to my mate having worked for the Census Bureau for several months) we haven't been evicted, had our electricity shut off, or been harassed by collectors. Somehow, we've always scraped the necessary money together in the nick of time. We're pretty resourceful. And VERY, VERY lucky so far.
With the Iron Artist commissions trickling slowly in, I thought I could look forward to enjoying a bit of security (or something like it) for a while.
The universe did not agree. I got a call this morning from the plasma donation center: the blood sample that they sent to the lab for testing (they do it every few months) came back with a weird protein count. I have to wait anywhere from a few days to a few weeks (at their discretion) to go back in and get re-tested. THEN I have to wait ANOTHER few days/weeks for the lab work to finish up... and hopefully come back with a better protein count this time.
I know that if I improve my diet a bit my bloodwork will come back fine. (There's nothing wrong with my health.) The problem is the wait time. Rent is due in a week and I'm short that $60 that I was going to get from plasma... and, depending on how long the lab takes with my blood, this could end up affecting my ability to make expenses the next month.
I don't want pity. I want COMMISSIONS. The universe seems to think that I can make enough money with the Iron Artist thing to make up for the temporary loss of plasma income. I'd like to prove it right, but I need your help to do so. MAKE ME WORK!

Egad! Iron Artist slots OPEN!
General | Posted 15 years agoNOTE: This is coming from a person who pretty much never, ever does commissions. This is your chance!
After months of deliberation, I'm jumping on the Iron Artist bandwagon. Partly because I'm desperately unemployed, yes, and don't want to switch my dog to shitty, carcinogenic, grocery-store kibble in order to make rent. Also partly because I'm desperately unemployed and need a way to achieve a sense of accomplishment and a sense of goddamn satisfaction in my daily life.
You, my beloved FA, can give me that satisfaction which I so desperately crave.
Help me out, my dear Affinity. I've got 100 slots open and I need you to fill them ALL.
You can do it. I know you can. I've seen you pull through before, and it's time to do it again. Your generosity will not go unrewarded.
Here's what I've got for you: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4668659/ <- EXAMPLE
(NOTE: Your background won't necessarily be tan/brown.)
Details you need:
• $15 for a full-body traditional pencil sketch with a digital background texture.
• $25 for the above, plus flat digital colors.
• $10 per extra character. Three-character limit.
• I will ship you the original sketch for $5 worldwide, in a USPS Priority Mail flat-rate envelope.
• PayPal or AlertPay. USD.
• Full payment in advance, no exceptions. (Shipping can be paid after completion.)
• You can reserve a slot now and pay later, but if weeks go by and you haven't paid, I may give your slot to someone else.
• Reference and/or description required.
• No commission limit per person!
• They'll be completed loosely in order of slot reservation, but I won't start a slot until I receive payment for it. Estimated turnaround time from the date the payment clears is three days to a week, but life is unpredictable, so I can't guarantee this.
• No sketch approval is given, since these are, after all, sketch commissions. It's a surprise! However, if you need me to, I will happily make mild to moderate corrections after completion for no charge. (And I'm the one who gets to decide what counts as "moderate".)
Details you want:
• Sketches done traditionally on thick white acid-free paper approx. 7.5x11". Background color/texture and colors done digitally.
• Your email inbox will be graced with a high-rez (400dpi), full-size JPG file. (Shipping of original is optional and costs $5.)
• I will draw porny things for no extra charge!
• I will draw FEMALES! I want to practice correct proportions for female characters, and I need you and your characters to help me!
• You're more than welcome to request one of my characters if you need an extra.
Limitations:
NO: cub; rape (though power play is welcomed and encouraged!); "internal" shots; vomit; death; gore (though blood is ok); mech; complicated costumes/clothes (I'm just bad at it); copyrighted characters you don't own; obvious doppelgangrs of copyrighted characters; rude behavior toward the artist; haggling.
I reserve the right to refuse any commission at my discretion, and I expect you to respect my personal boundaries and be OK with that if it happens.
Note me with your ref when you're ready to reserve a slot or two!
I'm taking 'em 10 at a time.

This time, though, it wasn't because of any fault with me; it was because I don't have my own car and, since the bus doesn't run to that area, that amounts to unreliable transportation. But they wanted to hire me. That's more of a bone than anyone's thrown at me in ages.
Back to the good ol' plasma donation center. Again.
The worst thing about being poor is the monotony.

Egad, some good news for once!
General | Posted 15 years agoI have an interview tomorrow morning! After almost a year of unemployment and few-and-far-between interviews, this is making my head a-splode with squee.
I'm not giving details, for fear of jinxing it, but I had to share, because I can't turn down the chance of potentially having a few more good thoughts/prayers/vibes/crossed fingers/magic/reiki/mojo/whatever sent my way.
