Whoa
Posted 15 years agoToday I was sorting through all the .doc files on my compy and discovered an unfinished story I totally forgot I'd been working on. :o
So as not to tease anyone (and because it might fall by the wayside again), I'll refrain from quoting any specifics, but I certainly like it. Oh all right, the title is "Extracurricular Activities." There, that's a tidbit of information.
I'm currently finishing up a story I'm writing for a friend, and after that I should probably write a follow-up to Milo's Turn lest impatient fans lynch me, but I'm definitely gonna get on on this one soon. Remembering the concept I had in mind, it's probably the most vanilla story I'll have written to date, it's good old fashioned M/F, nobody's related, nobody is secretly some kind of shapeshifter, it's just a boy-type person and a girl-type person doing what comes naturally when nobody else is around. n_n
>_> In retrospect this journal almost reads like an episode of Random Thoughts from Green's Head. Ah well, I've written it up, may as well post it.
JOURNAL OVER.

At Long Last! (also: pears!)
Posted 15 years agoSo! For a very, very long time, I have been amusing myself on instant messengers with a fairly silly game.
Basically, during a lull in conversation, I send "Gesundheit." to the other person.
The idea is that if the planets aligned and I just so happened to send this just after that person sneezed, it would be freaky and awesome. It's essentially the same idea as the 1 in 100 mind reading thing from XKCD.
I have been playing this silly little joke for years, and the timing has never quite been right.
Until now.
I would like to thank
Nogard for sneezing with perfect timing to finally fulfil my ridiculous game and think I was some kind of creepy psychic voyeur. n_n
In other news, I would also like to thank
SnowRoseRivenstar for this delightful new icon (press F5), which expresses my love of pears, the perfect fruit. Mmmmm. P:
Tydskrif oor.

Hmmm
Posted 15 years agoTried jumping on the realism meme bandwagon. Decided to take a blob of meat and put a smile on it, a la Good Company.
Googled "blob of flesh". Got lots of anti-abortion propaganda. No dice.
Googled "blob of meat". Got... well, just don't go Googling that. Apart from the random screenshots of A Boy and His Blob, no good came of that.
Thought about finding a white fox, remembered I don't actually have any photoshop skills.
Should probably start writing in complete sentences again. <_<;

Happy Birthday to me! :D
Posted 15 years agoI just wanted to let you all know that today was my birthday and boy howdy was it awesome!
>_> Apparently I became a cowboy today as well. Curious.
Yes, the Kiefer Sutherland year has come to a close, but so far I'm enjoying being 25.
Delicious omelette for breakfast, Dad gave me a snazzy bluetooth headset dealie for my cell phone, I managed to pick up the perfect Mother's Day gift for tomorrow, went to see Iron Man 2 with my brothers (short version: ohmygoditwassoawesome), super-delicious homemade tacos for dinner, mmmm P:
And to top things off, I did the final grammar/spell check on my latest story, Milo's Turn, and got it posted!
Yessir, today was pretty good.
And I'd like to say a special thanks to everyone watching me, you guys make me feel warm and fuzzy inside and good about myself as a writer. You don't really have anything to do with my birthday, but I'm in a damn good mood and wanted to share it. XD

This is a Journal
Posted 15 years agoI put up that journal about Giant Bomb forever ago, so I should probably push it off the page, but for once I don't really have anything to say. Better resort to random thoughts. <_<
Hmmm... I downloaded the Halo: Reach beta today, it's been fun so far. I like the new Stockpile more, and the Jetpacks are fun. And yet it's still Halo, the assault rifle feels familiar and the gravity hammer is as satisfying as ever. Nice to see.
I also find myself constantly getting my ass handed to me, so I guess I'm still me and it's still an online multiplayer game. *awesomeface*
(Anyone else in the Beta wanna chill with me, my gamer tag is "Johnny Weird".)
What else, what else...
I'm working on an Eric and Milo story, I know for certain what I'm writing after that, and I have an idea for a short piece about Dave and Kelly. After that, I'm not sure where I'll go. I still need to do a sequel to A Blue's Embrace, and I've had an idea forever about a male tentacle story, and I have a basic outline for a one-off sibcest story involving the Interblag, so it's not like I'm lacking for concepts. Admittedly not sure what I'm gonna do for the next 'proper' Dave and Kelly. Maybe they'll go to the beach and do it in the dunes, I dunno. :P
House tonight was about a guy who used to have a boyfriend who is now getting married to a woman. Naturally, every single character on the show assumes he's gay and in denial, which reinforces the unusual rule of thumb that there are no bisexuals on television. This is especially odd for House, since they're constantly going out of their way to remind you that 13 is bi.
Uh...
Actually, that seems long enough. I'ma put the brain-keyboard filter back up and stop writing whatever random thoughts occur to me. Cool. :B
EDIT: Oh hey, my birthday is on Saturday, I guess that's important to mention as well.

Ryan Davis Loves Mondays
Posted 15 years agoI'm writing this journal because I haven't updated in a while, and because I wanted to share something with you. :3
One of my favourite non-furry sites on the whole Interweb is a gaming community known as Giant Bomb.
They have a delicious mixture of serious gaming journalism and total rampant silliness.
For example, I'm especially fond of their Quick Looks, live-recorded videos where one of the editors just sits down and plays a game while answering questions about it and showing off the various features. (One of the guys, Brad Shoemaker, has such an unfortunate history with Quick Looks that in the Giant Bomb community, the act of dying while recording live footage of a game is called "Pulling a Brad")
They also have a Bombcast every Tuesday where they mainly talk about games, but get sidetracked by topics as varied as energy drinks, helicopters, and movies (in one glorious example, they spent fifteen whole minutes arguing about which Die Hard movie was the best).
But the reason I talk about it now is that every week, they release a video called I Love Mondays where they do a quick summary of what they hope to accomplish on the site in the coming week, and this week's instalment sums up more or less everything I love about Giant Bomb. You can find it right here.
(My personal favourite example of Giant Bomb's silliness, however, is this clip from the Bombcast, in which they discuss Nintendo's press conference at E3 2009)
Yessir, it's sites like Giant Bomb that are the reason I love the Internet. n_n
TL;DR Version: If you like video games, go check out Giant Bomb dot com. It's kick-awesome.

Book Meme!
Posted 15 years agoYou know I love a meme that involves my beloved Words.
Stolen from
cheery314.
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! just pick up whatever is closest.
I ended up with Halo: The Fall of Reach.
;>_> Don't judge me.
<begin sentences>
John's velocity now almost matched that of the ship. He eased toward the hull - twenty meters, ten, five... and then the Covenant ship started to pull away from him. It was travelling too fast. He tapped his attitude thrusters and pointed himself perpendicular to the hull. The Covenant hull accelerated under him... but he was dropping closer.
<end sentences>
"John", incidentally, is the Master Chief. The novels freely discuss his real name, and have extended sequences where he does stuff with his helmet off, just to rub it in.
Nothing in here about tagging dudes, so anybody who wants to do it can go ahead, I guess. :P

Just a Quick Note
Posted 15 years agoFirst, I'm done with the contest story, so I'm able to get back to furry stuff now, and second, it was brought to my attention that I haven't done a story about the Parrishes in half a year, so I'll get to work on their next story before I finish the new Eric and Milo chapter.
I'll do my best to make it worth the wait.
I'll do my best to make it worth the wait.
Delays, Delays, Delays
Posted 15 years agoSo you might have noticed that I haven't posted anything in a while. Well, the plan was to work on the next Eric and Milo story, but I've had to put that on the back burner. See, I'm working on an entry for a short-story contest the Toronto Star is running. It won't be furry, and it certainly won't be porn, but if anyone's interested, I might post it up... eventually.
Y'see, one of the rules of the contest is that this submission must not have been previously published anywhere, including the Internet (There goes my plan to just submit Dave's Birthday), so I won't be able to put it up for anyone to see until the judging is over in April. Sorry guys.
If you'll bear with me, I'll go back to our regularly scheduled programming as soon as possible.
-Green.
P.S. Thanks to
Nogard for reminding me that I hadn't explained my inactivity before now. :B

Posted 16 years agoSo I can't help but notice that this here is my 100th journal, and that's really cool to me because I really like large round numbers.
I thought I would use this journal to point out that My Weekend with Sharon is my 50th submission to the site, and I'm tickled pink to have made it to that point.
>_> Tickled pink is a lame expression, but I'm going with it anyway.
I know it only says 50 now, after I posted that thought-provoking piece about the dragon and the Eiffel Tower, but I deleted something from scraps a while ago, so the Sharon story is still the 50th thing I submitted to FA.
...And I just realized that since I deleted a bunch of journals a while ago, that this isn't the 100th journal either. It would actually have been somewhere between the one about the Olympic torch and the one with the Writer's Meme.
Don't I feel brilliant! n_n;
Okay then, forget all that stuff and just watch this video about beards instead.

2009, Year in Review...?
Posted 16 years agoSo there's this meme going all around the site where artists post little thumbnails of a picture they did in each month of the last year, as a sort of progress report or something, kay?
I wanted to do it myself, but a picture of a bunch of story thumbnails that I didn't even draw would be fairly stupid. So I figured I'd make it a journal instead, since all my stuff is text-based anyway. Without further ado...
January
Shave and a Haircut: Vinnie goes out to get a trim, and has hot sex with a stranger instead. Fans of red-bordered material rejoice.
February
Dave and Kelly: Bad Dreams: After Dave dreams that he and Kelly get caught in flagrante delicto by their parents, he says some things that upset his lover.
March
Good Neighbours: A frustrated Vinnie meets a woman named Michelle who just moved into the building and discovers in short order that she's in heat and has him in her sights.
April
Eric and Milo: A Learning Experience: The first dude-on-dude story I ever wrote, this one depicts Eric finding his younger brother Milo getting in touch with himself on Eric's bed, and instead of getting mad, Eric offers to lend him a hand.
>_> That sounded much cheesier than the actual story, somehow.
May
A Blue's Embrace: One of my favourite stories, this one's about a human farmer who discovers an alluring blue dragoness on a trip to the big city. Joyful things ensue.
June
Dave and Kelly: First Date: In the second blue-bordered story in the series, Dave and Kelly go on a day trip far from their home so they can actually act like a couple in public without blowing their cover.
July
Good Company: A sequel to March's Good Neighbours, this one has Vinnie revealing his secret to help a distraught Michelle through a personal crisis. Emotional bonding ensues, as does hot, hot red-bordered action.
August
Dave and Kelly: While You Were Sleeping: While Dave sleeps off a night on the town with the boys, mischievous Kelly takes the opportunity to have some fun with his slumbering body.
September
Helpless: In a bit of a departure for me, this story is about a guy named Jamie who gets invited into a wizard's tower, with both the sorcerer and Jamie himself having ulterior motives.
October
Room Service: Written as a birthday present for a huge Elder Scrolls fan, this one's about an Argonian serving girl and an Orcish sword-for-hire who find something new and exciting in each other when their paths cross.
November
Eric and Milo: Rude Awakenings: Milo wakes up in the middle of the night to discover his brother with a problem. And a hard-on. Naturally, these two things are related, but fortunately, he thinks Milo can help him with both of them.
December
A Winter's Night: This one went in scraps, but it's the only thing I finished last month, so what the hell. It's about Vinnie describing his family and explaining some facets of Mokaji society to Michelle, who he's grown closer to since last we saw them.
So there's that. That was kind of fun. I'll have to do it again next year. n_n
EDIT: I did do it again the next year! Click here for 2010's version.

Hey, how about that
Posted 16 years agoI delayed putting up a new journal to replace the obligatory Christmas entry for so long that I can now replace it with the obligatory New Year's entry. :D
So Happy New Year, unless you live in Australia or something, in which case you're already living in the future, and have probably evolved to some kind of awesome energy being of the type seen in about five or six episodes of Star Trek.
<_< What was I talking about again?
Oh right.
So usually I make a silly resolution that is ridiculously easy to follow, such as not causing the Earth to fall into the sun (07), not setting myself on fire (05), or not directly causing the extinction of the Human race (this last year).
But I think for 2010 (which I'll be pronouncing "twenty-ten", by the way, since it sounds more future-y), I'll make an actual resolution for a change.
I resolve to be more positive in the new year. I always try to keep up a lighthearted appearance on FA, but I've actually been feeling fairly down for a while now. It's been affecting my writing, my sleeping patterns, and my interactions with other people. I found myself mouthing off to a few people I cared about last night, and when one of them called me on it, I realized I was letting myself wallow in these feelings. I'm going to shake off this apathy and feel good for a change. u_u
Hey, if nothing else, my writing will surely benefit from it.
So have a Happy New Year, FA, and here's hoping 2010 goes better than 2009 for all of us. I'm already looking forward to my flying car and robot butler. n_n

Fire on a stick
Posted 16 years agoGot up at 6:30 this morning to go watch the Olympic torch get relayed through my town. Good stuff. Almost like a miniature parade with police cars and sponsor-branded vehicles and the dude actually holding the thing, running along. Flame was bigger than I thought it would be, looks gas-fuelled.
Cold as fuck though. My hands and feet went numb while I was waiting. :P

Random Thoughts from Green's Head
Posted 16 years agoHey guys, I'm gonna make up a journal as I go along! This will be stupid fun!
1. The purpose of this journal is to push the oh-so-relevant American Thanksgiving journal off my front page.
2. Hey, Fur Affinity's back. Hooray! 8D
3. The outage meant that I missed my third FAnniversary, which was last Thursday, but that's okay, since I was really just a lurker until sometime in Spring 2008.
4. Truly random thought: It just occurred to me, three years in, that it is odd that FA doesn't have furry emoticons in the comment boxes. You know, with whiskers or pointy ears or something.
5. I posted a bunch of my stories over on YiffStar during the outage, and I'm way surprised at how popular they are over there. I guess that's a story archive that also has pictures, while FA is an art gallery that also has stories. Or something.
Anyway, I still prefer FA, but it's neat over there, you can separate stories into series and put links to the other chapters on the story pages, it's kinda cool. Apart from the updates where it helpfully tells you which users masturbated to which stories. <_<
I think I'm flattered, but I'll keep you updated.
This has been Random Thoughts from Green's Head. I'm your host, TastesLikeGreen. u_u

Posted 16 years agoI normally try to space out my journals, but when I wrote that one about the dude and the video game I had forgotten that my friends to the south have their Thanksgiving a month later than we do.
So happy Thanksgiving to all you
AmericanFurs out there. I hope you all have something to be thankful for. Even if you can't spend the day surrounded by family enjoying a huge meal, I hope you find yourselves happy.

Posted 16 years agoSo I stumbled across this the other day. http://tinyurl.com/yjpef7r
In summary: This (anonymous) guy had such strong feelings for Nene Anegasaki, a fictional character from Love Plus, a DS game I've never heard of, that he went to Guam and had an official pronounce them married. I have no idea why he chose Guam, maybe they'll marry anything to anything.
To be fair, I've seen stranger things, like the lady who claims she is married to the Berlin Wall, and changed her last name to "Berliner-Mauer", which is 'Berlin Wall' in German, naturally enough.
Now, I'm not exactly a riotous success when it comes to the ladies, but I'd like to think that I've got enough skill to not have to marry a video game. >_>
Thoughts? Witty comments? Any fictional characters you guys wouldn't mind waking up next to every morning?
UPDATE: This video http://tinyurl.com/y8bbtww includes clips from the actual wedding ceremony. I'm not sure why random letters and words are constantly scrolling over it. I'm also not sure why the nice lady doing the voiceover pronounces "Nene" as "neh neh".

Blood
Posted 16 years agoSo tonight, as I do every few months, I went and donated blood. Apparently my blood type is rare or especially useful or something, so they always make a point of phoning to remind me that the clinics are coming up, or sending me form letters thanking me for my selfless donations or whatever.
Hey, doesn't cost anything, and it's probably good karma, so why not?
The thing is, there's one part of it that always gives me pause. You go into a little booth with a nurse and she asks you a bunch of questions to make sure your blood is okay to donate, ranging from the obvious (Do you have AIDS/ever tested positive for HIV or AIDS) to the understandable (In the last year have you received a blood transfusion in Africa) to the amusing (In your job or any previous jobs have you handled monkeys or their bodily fluids).
But every time, they also ask me the following question.
"Have you had sex with another man, even one time, since 1977?"
A glance at the paper they read from reveals that if you are female, they are supposed to ask if you have had sex with a man who has had sex with a man since 1977. No, I don't know why they're so specific with the year.
Now, this isn't an issue with me personally, I just say no and we move on, but every single time I find myself wondering what they would do if someone said yes. I'm pretty sure it would be illegal to just kick someone out because they were gay. Would they slap a little 'GAY' sticker on the blood bag? I get the gay-AIDS connection, but isn't asking every single male donor if they've done the horizontal mambo with a dude excessive? I can see where someone would be openly offended by that, actually.
Anyone out there have any thoughts on the subject?

Quick question for my watchers
Posted 16 years agoHaven't done a journal in a while, thought I'd ask.
I found myself wondering this afternoon: does it bug you guys that I post my stories in .doc format that you have to download to read?
I mean, I'm not fond of .txt format since you can't do too much by way of emphasis (I loves my italics ) other than surrounding words with *asterisks*. Not to mention that my stories range from medium length to really really long, so it would probably be annoying to have a huge story stretching out the page and requiring much scrolling to get to the description and comments.
But one of the major problems with being a writer is that people often don't want to take the time to read a story, and I can't help but wonder if there's anyone who skips my work because they don't want to take the extra time to download them and read them in Word or Works Word Processor or whatever. I got a note once from a person who requested the text from a story since he was way into the subject matter but apparently didn't have a program that could read .doc files. (That's not quite the same thing, but it would be a bummer if there were people who wanted to read my stuff but couldn't, and then didn't bother asking me for an alternate format, eh?)
On an unrelated note, it's kind of annoying how Word 2007's default formatting is .docx, whatever that means, which FA does not support. I have to make a point of saving stories in "Word 97-2003" format to get .doc's.
Anyway, now that I've asked, I'll finish this journal, since I appear to be going off on tangents again.
Xornal máis.

Happy Turkey Day
Posted 16 years agoHey guys, I'm feeling a little off today, I didn't get any sleep last night and then because I was tired I ended up sleeping from 10am - 3pm. (I'm hoping I'll be able to sleep tonight, or this could turn into one of them cycles :P) Add to that that my stomach has been touchy this weekend, and I'm not exactly rainbows and sunshine right now.
But today is a holiday after all, at least if you're one of us
CanadianFurs, so I'd like to wish all my canuck brethren a happy thanksgiving. Here's hoping you all have something to be thankful for. If I may be sappy for a moment, one of the things I'm thankful for is that I have a growing audience who enjoys reading my stories. Awwww. n_n

Posted 16 years agoFinally, a meme specifically for writers. Kick-ass.
Stolen from
Scystorm, who stole it from
Renohidaka
~ How often do you get writer's block?
I get it every now and then, usually for a couple weeks at a time. It's not really the kind of thing that runs on a schedule, you know?
~ How do you fix it?
Eh, nothing really *fixes* it. I find the best thing to do is stop trying to write so I don't drive myself crazy.
~ Do you type or write by hand?
Typing, absolutely and always. My handwriting is garbage, and while I'm not the fastest typist in the world, I'm quite comfortable with a keyboard.
~ Do you save everything you write?
Yeah, pretty much. I've probably got stories that go back for years on my old computer in the basement.
~ Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
At least once, actually. The original idea behind While You Were Sleeping was one of the first concepts I came up with for stories about Dave and Kelly once I had finished the first three stories. The first section, talking about how Kelly was all alone in the house with her brother, I wrote probably in late '08, and remained pretty much unaltered in the final version I released at the ass end of this August.
~ Do you have a constructive critic?
Well, I don't really have any critics who just baselessly bash everything I create, if that's what you mean. Most of the people who comment on my stuff are constructive, or at least friendly.
~ Did you ever write a novel?
I tried to, once, but had a minor breakdown part of the way through. I'd like to go back to it someday, though.
~ What genre would you love to write but haven't?
You know, I can't really think of any genres that appeal to me that I haven't written something in yet, even if it wasn't posted to this site.
~ What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
I'd have to go with mystery. I have the basic plot of my stories worked out in my head ahead of time, along with the dialogue for specific sequences, but a lot of the actual writing, the descriptions, the inconsequential dialogue, etc., is made up and altered as I go. With a mystery story, you have to know everything about the entire story, forwards and backwards, before you even start writing, so you can drop hints here and there so a smart reader can figure out the solution before your characters do. It just sounds incredibly difficult to me. :P
~ How many writing projects are you working on right now?
Let me think. There's the story about the two ladies in the fantasy setting who have a good time together, the story where Vinnie ends up the plaything of someone else's character, a story I'm working on as we speak where Milo hangs out in a whole new way with his best friend, and a story about a pair of rabbits stuck in a hotel. So four. I suppose you could also include the long-delayed story about the PCA, but that's on hiatus until I figure out where I want to go with it.
~ Do you write for a living? Do you want to?
No, and oh God yes. I would love to write for a living, it's something that brings me joy, so if I could support myself on it, I might just be able to find this 'happiness' thing people are always talking about.
~ Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
Unfortunately, no.
~ Have you ever won an award for your writing?
Well, I won the school writing contest ("Write Now!") two years in a row back in high school, but no 'real' awards.
~ What are your five favourite words?
This is an interesting one, let's see...
In no particular order:
Ejaculated - It's dirty, it's fun to say, and it conjures up a very vivid image of the act of orgasm. I use it a lot in my stories, you might have noticed.
Wretched - This one comes from a movie I saw long ago where a nearly-defeated villain spat this word out at his enemies like it was the foulest insult imaginable instead of a mild-at-best curse.
Spoon - Pretty much entirely based on how much fun it is to say.
Indeed - This is one of those words where you can say an awful lot in very few syllables. It gets a lot of use from Christopher Judge on Stargate SG-1, for example. Also because of an inside joke between a friend and I involving a boss from Chrono Trigger who had a strange-looking attack called 'Yes, Indeed!'.
Love - Yes, yes, I'm a huge sap, I know. Even the word makes me smile, it just sounds wonderful.
~ Do you ever write based on your dreams?
Oh sure. Specific scenes from the various Dave and Kelly or Eric and Milo stories are lifted pretty much verbatim from dreams I've had, and Never Say Quit was based almost entirely on a dream I had once.
~ Do you favour happy endings, sad endings, or cliffhangers?
Happy endings. Hands down. What can I say, I get fairly emotionally invested in my characters, so I dislike being a dick to them. You'll notice that even the few stories where bad things happen (I've got another one in the works, incidentally) always end nicely for all involved.
~ Have you ever written based on an artwork you’ve seen?
Now that I think about it, I've done it twice, and both stories are here. Shave and a Haircut was written for a story contest that I wasn't really motivated to enter until I saw this picture of the girl the contest was centred around. Secondly, This picture by Narse, along with other factors I shall not mention (;>_>) inspired me to write a story involving a blue dragoness, and the result was A Blue's Embrace. My dragoness isn't exactly like Narse's, of course, that would be a Dick Move. They're just both blue humanoid dragon females. But it was definitely that pic that got the idea in my head in the first place.
So that's the meme, mercifully this one doesn't ask you to tag anyone, which is good since I'm not sure I know that many other writers, but if you want to give it a try, by all means, go ahead.
I hope that if this wasn't exactly a peek into the thought processes in my brain, it was at least entertaining for you.
MEME OVER.

Thanks, plus a silly link
Posted 16 years agoHey guys.
When I wrote that journal about Kelly's Birthday, I wasn't really expecting anyone to reply with actual answers, but lo and behold, I received quite a few very thought-provoking suggestions, ranging from just deleting the story to totally rewriting every Dave and Kelly story.
I certainly had a lot to think about. Now I'm not certain, but I believe what I'm going to do is rewrite Kelly's Birthday so that the general events that transpire are the same, but they'll be carried out in a way that fits in better with the characters involved. I'll probably just make it a new submission ("Kelly's Birthday Director's Cut" or something equally silly) and move the old one to scraps so that people who really liked that version can still access it.
Now this wouldn't be happening for a while, mind you, I'm currently juggling three or four stories as it is, and for whatever reason I'm having trouble finding the motivation to write. It's not writer's block, I've got ideas, I'm just finding it difficult to actually sit down and make words happen. :P
But I wanted to say thanks to you guys for the responses, I really appreciated them. They helped me consider a problem from several different angles and ultimately helped in making a decision.
So,
Thank you.
...
Now then, here's a silly link for anyone who's read this whole thing.

Retrospect (long one)
Posted 16 years agoSo I've been looking at my older stories recently.
And I've found one really, really big regret.
I mean I know everybody looks at their old stuff and automatically sees the errors and the flaws and thinks about how they would do it differently today...
But this one's different.
I'm talking about "Kelly's Birthday".
The more I look at it these days, the less I actually like it. The biggest problem is that Kelly acts way, way out of character, doing awful things to Dave, who is both her brother and the man she loves... for no particular reason. Even at the time I found her explanation of "getting carried away" lacking. After all, the concept was originally meant to be retaliation for something Dave did to her. Not to mention that really, the only reason Dave forgives her at the end of the story is that I didn't want the series to end, much less with a downer ending. :P
Later on, I started to write a story with the opposite concept, where Dave carries out my original idea as revenge from what was meant to be Kelly's revenge (if that sentence made any sense). But I dropped the idea.
Because Dave wouldn't go that far. And it got me thinking: neither would Kelly.
So I was thinking of either moving it to scraps and making it non-canon, or deleting it.
But there's a problem. As was pointed out to me recently, I make reference to the fairly traumatic events of that story in almost every Dave and Kelly story that's come since. Going back and removing all those references would require medium-to-heavy rewriting of all those stories.
So I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Right now I think I might remove the story and just leave the references as what they are: allusions to an unfortunate incident that the Parrishes would rather not get into.
Thoughts?
