Save a Horse, Buy A Commission (OPEN)
Posted 10 years agoCOMMISSIONS OPEN FOR THORIN
Since tumblr was being a pain in the ass, I made a proper journal here for this.
Thorin is a thoroughbred racehorse who has recently been retired from racing. Unfortunately, he suffered a good deal of neglect with his last trainer, and is in need of some real TLC (and some serious groceries) to rehab him while he lets down and learns how to be a horse again. You can follow his ongoing story and other horse racing shenanigans at http://thorinoakenhoof.tumblr.com
To that end, I am taking commissions (there’s a lot of furries on the examples but I also do humans and other stuff No weird kinky things, PG please). I VERY RARELY take commissions because of carpal tunnel and my regular job's crazy workload, but this is for a cause I am intensely passionate about and he needs all the help he can get.
SO HERE'S THE STUFF YOU CAN GET:
Color speedpaint sketches- $25
Mini phone charms (any critter, not just ponies)- $20
Palette sketch- $10 (a simple sketch using a limited color palette of your choice, from any number of color palette generator memes or websites)
B/W headshot - $10
Expression sheet- $30
I am open for 15 slots-!
(Slots and waitlist here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....it?usp=sharing )
Please request commissions at tathiburd[at]gmail.com (please don’t use tumblr or FA Notes they are too unreliable and hard to keep track of). Paypal is my only accepted form of payment.
Thanks so much for any reblogs/signal boosts!

Save a racehorse, buy a commission
Posted 10 years agoI am finally off hiatus and this is one of those rare times I open myself to commissions.
I have been working for two years to rescue this horse from the racing industry. Unfortunately, before I was able, he went through some serious neglect and now he needs a lot of help before he has a chance at a normal life or a second career. Read more about my ongoing quest to save him here :
But you want the arts, and that's how you can help me help him.
I am taking 15 slots for various types of commissions-- speed paints, sculpted phone charms, palette sketches, headshots, and the very popular expression sheets.
Commission info, prices, how to order, and slot list/wait list info can all be found
HERE---> http://paintaloosa.tumblr.com/post/.....in-thorin-is-a
PLEASE signal boost this fundraiser if you can not commission right now. Every little bit can help him!

Taking 10 sketch portrait commissions (for Cash and FR Gems)
Posted 12 years agoDoing some more SINGLE CHARACTER HEADSHOT/PORTRAIT commissions to help offset a sudden but necessary trip.
I'm going to even go one further and offer tiered pricing/quality-- and here's the other thing I'm going to try, offering Flight Rising players the chance to pay with Gems ($1 = 100 gems).
Otherwise these are standard Paypal only commissions.
$10 - Sketch portrait/headshot, sketchy line shading (examples: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11044398/ )
$15 - Sketch portrait with flat grayscale shading (example: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11045764/ and/or http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11238320/ but ONE CHARACTER only)
$20 - Sketch portrait with flat color (example: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6088267/ I actually don't have any examples of these exactly but assume it'll be really simple flat colors I mean that's pretty self explanatory right? ;-;)
$40 - waist up (or more--at my discretion-- but at least waist up) lineless 1 hour speedpaint. (example: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8052644/ and http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7710305/ and http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9246348/ )

Signal Boost for a dear friend who needs a Kidney
Posted 12 years agoPlease, if anyone is able to consider donating a little money (or a supremely generous person with A negative blood type, a kidney),
tyreenya is in a pretty desperate situation:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4980046
I'm the wrong blood type to help with the kidney, but there is a donation link in her journal, which explains what she's been going through. If anyone can spare, please help my friend in her time of great need.

'Chess' Is Back-!
Posted 12 years agoI've started working on my old Suikoden fancomic project, 'Chess.' You can read it here or at
http://chess-comic.smackjeeves.com/
Smackjeeves will get new pages first, have relevant footnotes related to the plot points referencing the games if you haven't played them, and is also a ton easier to navigate as a comic hosting site.
But I'll still post them here, too.
You can also keep up with WIPs, side-sketches, and character notes at

Going to Weasyl
Posted 12 years agohttps://www.weasyl.com/profile/tathi
Yep, I'm moving, too. I'm not necessarily leaving FA, I'm just... yeahhhh there's a lot of bullshit coming to light around the site and I've got reasons that I don't feel comfortable supporting the administration and their practices.
This gallery will stay here because I'm not reuploading the whole thing to Weasyl but I don't think I'm going to upload anything new to it until further notice.
There's shit that ain't right and there's shit that ain't right.

Tea drama >:|
Posted 12 years agoAll right this is a last ditch effort-- I just tried changing to a different browser and sending reminders for every gift certificate I've sent out, in case Adagio didn't like Chrome for some reason.
Sorry if you already got your tea and get a reminder email already, I promise I'm not trying to spam you or be a nag, I just couldn't remember from the long list who had actually gotten one and who hadn't, so I just sent reminder emails to everyone.
Good luck, everyone. <3

More Adagio Tea problems :(
Posted 12 years agoHi guys, I'm sorry this is turning into such a hassle. I've emailed Adagio about the problems with the email system, hopefully they can force a resend or something on their end. :/ if you still haven't gotten a gift certificate and you asked for one, please let me know again.
Adagio Tea $5 gift certs-- did you get yours?
Posted 12 years agoHey guys, I recently posted a journal where I asked people to send me their emails to get $5 gift certificates to Adagio teas--
--did anyone actually get theirs? I found out one friend of mine never got hers even though Adagio says it was sent (and won't let me reissue one to that same email to just resent it).
Let me know if you got your gift certificates, please. Check your spam mails, too!
EDIT: APPARENTLY something effed up concerning cookies or my internet or something, and even though Adagio says I mailed all those gift certificates, MOST NONE OF THEM WENT THROUGH. However, since it won't let me just resend it, IF YOU STILL WANT TEA, NOTE ME WITH AN ALTERNATE EMAIL.
Ugh I'm sorry, this is completely disheartening and upsetting, I'm sorry for the hassle over five little bucks. :<
Thanks <3

Do you like tea? Do you want $5 to go buy tea with?
Posted 12 years agoHi guys :3 I recently decided I needed--- NEEDED-- to play around with creating tea blends on Adagio Teas. I have a bunch of blends up right now and I want to make more--!
If you like tea, send me your email address in a note and I'll send you a $5 gift certificate! You can use it to buy anything on Adagio.com, even create your OWN tea blends! (though if you wanted to give any of my blends a try and review them, I'd also love you, but you don't have to of course!)
For every gift certificate I send out that gets redeemed, I get points towards buying tea for myself-- which I can use to taste test new blends! Self sustaining hobby is self-sustaining. Additionally, while I make no money off my blends, for every bag of my blends that is sold, I also get tea points.
So yes-- send me emails, get tea! Very easy :D
If you already are a customer at Adagio, sorry, I can't give you anything, but if you want to repost this, you're of course welcome to do that :D
4 blends I currently have:
'Forgotten Days' - green tea blend; bright and clean with a a hint of spice
'Eightfold Black' - 3 black tea blend; if you like black teas and you like chai, this might be a good tea for you.
'Calculated Risk' - rooibos blend; smooth and creamy, should be reminiscent of raspberry amaretto (raspberry should be a subtle hint, almond and creamy vanilla are the predominant notes)
'Good Morning, Mr. Jones' - Chocolate, mocha, caramel chai/mate blend.
More blends coming as I go crazy with my new hobby. <3

Breath of Life
Posted 13 years agoI am not dead. Yet.
Summer is come and gone and fall is almost gone, too-- and with it, the height of racing season is finally over for the year. Our barn represented well in the Breeder's Cup World Championship, with Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom overcoming a nightmare trip in the Mile to finish a furiously closing 2nd.
Blah blah blah TLDR;
I can finally stop bouncing around the country like a fucking pinball and sit down and do some ART.

ATTN: COMMISSIONERS, please read!
Posted 13 years agoI'm going to keep this very short as I'm paying by the minute;
Some of you know I work with racehorses. Sometimes, the boss will decide at the extreme last minute to send me to a different state for undetermined amounts of time with a group of the horses. I am and have been sent on such a "deployment" to upstate New York. For the last month I have been living in-- literally-- a tent. In the woods. With no electricity and no Internet. Yes I am serious, because I couldn't afford $150 a night to stay in a hotel or to rent a room in someone else's house for the duration of the meet on top of the rent I still have to pay on my apartment in Maryland. I shit you not, I will take photos if you need them.
Which makes it hard to do digital commissions.
I have finally come to a solution! I was able to buy some basic watercolor supplies and am offering, as apology for the suddenness of my radio silence and the long wait time for these badges,
To upgrade everyone's digital badge to a watercolor badge at no cost. Your badge will be laminated and mailed to you also at no charge. This is a $30 value (watercolor badges + shipping normally run $50 each).
If this is unacceptable and you would like a refund, please EMAIL ME (I get email on my phone easily--I do not get FA notes). TATHIBURD[at]GMAIL.COM
Otherwise, please continue to sit tight and I will do my best to honor my commitments to all of you as soon as I am actually able.
I am sorry for this unplanned absence, but I'm afraid it's the nature of my job. :/

Thank you, everyone <3
Posted 13 years agoI wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated to my partner to help him get home from China. Thanks to you, he was able to book a different hotel (due to a mess of unforeseen bullshit, he was suddenly without a room in Beijing and still had a week before his flight out of the country) and complete his scheduled visit, instead of having to find a way to come home early.
Your generosity and resourcefulness have really surprised and touched us both, and we are so grateful to you guys for all the help, both for the donations and just the kind words of support.
I want to let you know that I have been very sick for the last few days with a wicked sinus infection, and it has kept me feverish and out of commission. I did get to the doctor today for some antibiotics to kick it, and as soon as I'm feeling up to sitting up without falling over, I will start the badges. I hope to get them done over the weekend so you have plenty of time to get them printed and whatnot for those of you hoping to wear them at AC! I did say they would be done before it, so look for them by Wednesday at the latest, sick or no sick.
Thanks again, everyone. I am so glad to have such an awesome network of great people-- pay it forward, pay it forward. <3

Thanks!
IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE $20 BADGE BUT WOULD STILL LIKE TO HELP, PLEASE SEND A NOTE ANYWAY. I will be doing portrait SKETCHES for anyone that donates $5 or more! Send a note and I will send you the place to donate. Paypal only for all these things, please!

Posted 14 years agoI hate feeling like I have to preface every horse racing related piece of art I do with 'I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT' in relation to people who think it's 'cruel' or 'slavery' or that the horses are somehow -forced- into competition.
You are not only insulting my livelihood, you're insulting my own intelligence. And in addition, you're insulting the animals themselves. I dare anyone to climb aboard a thoroughbred, from greenbroke babies who have never raced to the most retired of ex-racehorses, and give them a chirp and a loose rein and see if they don't run. Turn them loose at liberty in a pasture, and watch them flip their tails up and take off at a gallop like it's the only thing they ever wanted to do. Watch them race each other in the field, pinning their ears and digging in faster if a horse dares come beside them to pass.
Running is in their blood. These horses are fighters, competitors. They want to run. If you think you have to 'force' it out of them, go ahead and try to gallop one down the backstretch--even alone, I guarantee unless you are dead fit and think you can hold back a freight train, you're going to have a handful of horse pulling your ass off to run off with you. And if you aren't dead fit, well... see you when he gets tired.
Yes, there are negative aspects of the sport-- what sport doesn't have crooked people willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. I am not so stupid and blind to ignore that. There is still the use of illegal drugs and blood doping to get that extra edge out of horses who are run too much, who are unfortunately naturally slower or not as gifted as others. Of course there are the sensationalized stories of Barbaro and Eight Bells. Yes, horses get injured and horses die on the track every -day.- It is an unfortunate fact that my industry must deal with, and there have been -numerous- calls-- not just from outside the industry, but from those of us within it-- to change, and they haven't gone unheeded.
Whip rule reform, better understanding of how and why injuries occur, safer track surfaces, smarter horse management through science and understanding of their physiology, just to name a few.
It takes a special person to be in this kind of business-- it is 7 days a week, with no vacations, no holidays, no days off, from 5 am until 5pm-- sometimes as late as midnight or 1am if you are at a track with night racing. It is a complete and total commitment and ALL OF US understand that without THE HORSES we would be begging in the gutter. You CAN'T work in the racing industry if you don't have a deep and total love of the animals.
To compare it to slavery... is completely ignorant of everything I and my fellow racetrackers are trying to do, the perception we are working hard to change.
Spend a day with a thoroughbred, and maybe you'll understand. Until then, don't you dare come around my page patronizing me for the hard work that I and these magnificent, brilliant athletes do every day.

Update On Things
Posted 14 years agoJust a heads up, things are very slow right now on the art front due to the September Yearling Sales, which are in full swing here in KY. I am working the sales and attending classes as well, so pretty much everything is on hold until after this weekend.
Thanks for your patience during this extremely busy time of year. :)
