Skoon's Skills
General | Posted 16 years agoThis is in response to a meme post by my friend
Skoon. He was kind enough to post three of his favorites among my gallery, so I'm gladly returning the favor here.
For those of you who aren't familiar with his work, go check him out, and also take a look at his other FA account,
littlecookiecomics where he runs an online comic of his own.
1. http://www.furaffinity.net/full/1232846/ -- Very tender, full of feeling
2. http://www.furaffinity.net/full/1021768/ -- Made me laugh, and I have referred back to this one many times
3. http://www.furaffinity.net/full/2541686/ -- Lots of character and detail on this one. I especially like the pose and the facial expression.

Happy Father's Day!
General | Posted 16 years agoA few weeks ago, my wife told me that she had been looking to buy me a WACOM tablet for Father's day. However, after looking at the prices online, she concluded that we couldn't afford one at this time.
HOWEVER! Yesterday morning, my wife presented me a box containing a 4x6 size WACOM tablet! I couldn't believe my eyes! It turns out that my parents-in-law have had one for a few years, and almost never use it, so they agreed to 'loan' it to me until such time that we can save up enough to get one of my own.
SO! I spent yesterday afternoon happily installing photoshop on my computer, then showing my boys how to use the tablet. They were all pretty thrilled, and I put together a quickie anthro fox head for them to print out and color with crayons. This is going to be fun!

Movie Review: Bolt
General | Posted 17 years agoI've recently had the chance to see a few movies that I've been wanting to see for a long time.
Bolt, the new movie from Disney, continues Disney's return from movie mediocrity into the realm of enjoyable and memorable films. Many of us were somewhat turned off by some of Disney's 'flop films' in the past, and we had decided that Disney's glory days of excellent filmmaking were over.
Bolt restores my confidence that Disney knows how to make a good movie. They are not nearly back to the standard of excellence that they had long ago, but they are certainly on their way back up.
The movie tells an intriguing story of a dog who was brought up in a TV show world, with such care taken to convince him that the TV show is actually reality. In his world, Bolt is a super hero, with fantastic powers given him by the father of his owner, a young girl named Penny. Using Penny's smarts and Bolt's amazing strength, speed, eye-emitted laser bolts, and shockwave-inducing super barks, the pair struggle to stay out of the clutches of the Green-Eyed man and his minions, while trying to rescue Penny's captive father.
When one of Bolt's TV show plots leads to Penny being captured, Bolt's rescue attempt mistakenly ends up getting him shipped to New York City, where he is left to fend for himself in the real world. The remainder of the film follows Bolt's grapple with the reality that he doesn't truly have super powers, and his struggle to return to Penny in Hollywood. Through his self discovery and the aquisition of a few unlikely friends, Bolt discovers that he can still be a hero.
I was intrigued by the new and different storyline in this movie--it was a fresh take on the self-discovery plotline. I was also very impressed by advances in computer-generated animation; Disney has done the fur in this movie extremely well. I was particularly amazed by the realism of Bolt's wet, dripping fur during a scene where he was caught in the rain.
Another thing that excites me about this movie is the fact that it was not done by Pixar. Of course, now that Disney owns Pixar, all of their movies are published under the Disney label. However, Pixar's stories and characters are developed entirely in-house, independent (as far as I know) of Disney's oversight. Bolt, along with Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons, marks Disneys triumphant entry into the world of computer generated films, showing that they can still tell a good story while mastering the new technology at the same time.
Conclusion: While still not up to par with some of their classic movies (Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King), Bolt was a very enjoyable film, restoring my confidence that Disney can make a truly memorable movie experience.

FurCon Day 4
General | Posted 17 years agoSunday. Went to church in the morning (found a church building less than five miles away), then came back to the con and put on my tail. I felt pretty cool walking around in a full double-breasted suit while wearing a dragon tail. :)
Attended a panel on furry christianity (yes, I am a Christian, for those of you who don't know). Though there was a good discussion, I as a bit disappointed. I was hoping that we would discuss how some folks feel that there is a conflict between christianity and furriness (I don't feel there is a conflict myself, though).
DesertWolf and Xaqtly had to leave early, so I said goodbye to them. Desert had commissioned a tail from BushyCat, but she hadn't finished it before he left, so I got to go pick it up for him. Mmmmm soft, fuzzy, fluffy... :-P
I zonked pretty early last night; lots of walking around makes for sore legs after a while.
I get to drive home today. The weather looks pretty good, so I expect an uneventful trip. (hopefully)

Furcon Day 3
General | Posted 17 years agoSHRAG. SNORES.
But other than that, today was a whirlwind. I got up and had breakfast with Kellan Meig'h and his daughter Dana over at a place called Coco's. 3 pieces of cinnamon-roll french toast were enough to STUFF me silly.
The first workshop of the day was the Leopards Etc. demonstration. Similar to last year, they brought in 5 wild cats for us to see and photograph. Got a bunch of good shots of these beautiful creatures.
I got to be on Furmily Feud again this year! It was again hosted by The Gneech (http://www.suburban-jungle.com), and, due to the economic downturn, it was pretty low-tech. The staff posted the answers and the scores on an Excel spreadsheet, and then projected it on two screens on either side of the stage. Oh well, we still had fun, and our team won again! The winning answer was "Armadillo."
This evening, had dinner with DesertWolf and Xaqtly, then got to sit with Kellan Meig'h and his daughter to see a stand-up comedy hour.
Afterwards, I tried to head over to where
YoungWolfBrother is staying (room 265); the whole 2nd floor is having a big party at the moment. But I felt myself... slowly... shutting... down... I guess I'm not much of a night person.
G'night everybody.

FurCon Day 2
General | Posted 17 years agoYesterday (Friday) was a whirlwind. First of all, DesertWolf and I started our jobs as staff in the FurSuit lounge. We get to check the lounge evey couple of hours or so to make sure that it's in order, clean, and that snacks, drinks, and sewing supplies are in good supply. Not difficult at all, really, and it's fun to chat with the fursuiters who come to cool off.
I also got to attend several workshops yesterday, two on writing, and two on artwork. One of the classes went into very deep detail about animal anatomy and skeletal structures--taught by a licensed veterinarian. I learned something new about felines--their "shoulder" joints at the forelegs are not bone joints at all. It's just muscle!
Kellan Mei'gh, a friend from PlanetFurry, also came to the con yesterday along with his daughter. I got a picture of them, along with
Xaqtly and I (I'll post it in a bit). Kellan wants to take us all to breakfast this morning (saturday); unfortunately, Xaq is out seeing a 'lady friend' in San Francisco at the moment and won't be able to come with us.
Last night, I got to watch a game show on the main stage called 'Furl in the Blank'. Essentially, there was a panel of 'guest stars' (prominent con attendees) and two contestants. The host read a statement and left a single word blank, and the panel would each write their own answer. The contestants had to then give their own answer, and if their answer matched any of the panelists' answers, they would score points. Needless to say, humor ruled the day, and we all had a good laugh as most of the answers simply didn't match at all.
I also got to go to the dealer's den, and I saw some of my favorite comic artists:
-Jon Robey (The Gneech) http://www.suburban-jungle.com
-Susan Rankin http://www.doemain.com
-D.C. Simpson http://www.ozyandmillie.org
-Bill Holbrook http://www.kevinandkell.com
I bought a few comic books, and then I found a great little booklet: "Beginner's guide to drawing furry characters." It only cost $5.00, and it's full of great guides on how to draw! I'm stoked!
Having a great time out here, and looking forward to seeing more.

FurCon Day 1 at the end of the day
General | Posted 17 years agoWe're all here now--
Xaqtly has joined us here in the room, making 5 of us in all. I got a bunch of good pictures today, I'll post a couple of good ones here on FA tonight.
I got a chance to take out my Saxophone and just sit and play for a while. Just for the heck of it. It was fun--Shrag came by (dressed in his fursuit) and sat next to me as I played. It's been a few months since I've picked up my sax--my lower lip is feeling it already.
Got a chance to see lots of fur suiters, and saw some folks that I haven't seen for a long time. I sat and played Mario Party with
KaneKisaragi and
youngwolfbrother while we waited in the registration line. It was so much fun getting together with a bunch of folks that all have a Nintendo DS! :D
DesertWolf and I also went to staff orientation. He and I are on the fursuit lounge staff, and we're responsible for helping the lounge to stay well-stocked with water, snacks, sewing supplies, and clean towels. In return, I get to eat free in the con staff cafeteria all weekend long. :)
It's 10:30 PM now--there are still a bunch of things going on downstairs, but I can feel my body starting to shut down. So I'm going to get some rest and have fun tomorrow.

FurCon Day 1
General | Posted 17 years agoWell, I arrived here in San Jose last night, and met up with my roommates:
LaurenRivers, Shrag, and DesertWolf. We're up on the 4th floor of the DoubleTree this year, and that is a NICE thing. Last year, DesertWolf and I were over in the Holiday Inn, and we had to do quite a bit of walking back & forth between hotels.
Unfortunately, the weather has become cloudy and overcast. I *REALLY* hope we don't have a repeat of last year, where we had nearly non-stop rain for the entire con. *cross claws*
Despite that, I'm very excited to be here, and I'm looking forward to mingling and getting pictures. I'll post more info as the con moves forward.

I have a room for FurCon '08, need one roommate[FILLED]
General | Posted 18 years agoI have a room for FurCon, and I already have two roommates. However, since the third roommate recently had a change of plans, I now have an opening for one more roommate. Please let me know if you want to hook up and share the cost of a hotel room.
I am going to this convention to have fun, so I'm pretty open to any type of roommate, as long as the following conditions apply:
* The room is about a third of a mile from the con center. It's not a long walk, but it is a walk. Please be aware of this.
* I do not smoke. The room is non-smoking. If you must smoke, please do so outside, and allow the smoke smell to dissapate before returning to the room.
* I have no problem with female/male roomates, as long as I am not sleeping in the same bed with a female roommate (I can sleep on the floor if need be.) Also, please be considerate of others' privacy when necessary.
* I do not drink alcohol, but I don't mind if you do, as long as you are at least legal drinking age (21) and drink responsibly.
* I plan to have fun & stay up late with the rest of the furs, but I do need to get at least a few hours of sleep each night.
* Fursuits are welcome, though I don't plan to fursuit myself. I do plan to wear a tail, though.
If you are interested, please contact me by email (rwilson@svsgames.com), AIM (JRobWilson777), or MSN Messenger(jrobwilson777@hotmail.com). I look forward to hearing from you!
