House of the Living Image
Posted 11 years ago"The symbol of the sphinx uniquely brings together the sphinx as the guardian of knowledge, the sentinel of the opening of the door to higher knowledge, the power of human nature that is to say the face of human intelligence connected with the body of the lion, the forces of nature that are put in balance with that of the solar system or the greater notion of life in the universe. All three themes are brought together in one. It is the perfect symbol of initiation into life eternal." -James J. Hurtak
Anyone know how much I love my mother?
Posted 13 years agoI just made a journal entry asking about a specific cheap tablet and if anyone had ever used it. Today, I woefully mentioned to my mother that my tablet had broken when she asked me "Why so glum?" Normally, I would have the means to buy myself an okay one at a fairly decent price ($40-$50) but I have been disabled due to a couple herniated discs and haven't been able to work for 6 months (this of course explains the influx in drawings). She asked me how much they were and I told her about the 20 dollar ones and that they were fairly decent. She actually insisted that I find a better one. So for a nice price at $70 she paid all the expenses towards me getting shipped a brand new wacom bamboo tablet and I am just beside myself with excitement.
Most awesome mom ever.
Most awesome mom ever.
Old skin, new self
Posted 13 years agoI changed the way my sphinx fursona looked back in 2007. I completely changed her colors to brown, giving a more natural and plausible look to a mythological creature. As I began to develop her back story, her personality started to alter from mine to someone I would admire. She is sweet, kind, good-natured, accepting of everyone, and overall, innocent.
Now I am a decent person. One you may even like! But I don't see the world through her eyes. Because of that, I am cynical, judgmental, and can be such a crab sometimes - I'm also not as innocent. The biggest thing we do have in common is our cowardice. BUT I am trying to overcome that just as she does. No need to run away from our problems now.
So I went back to my old pelt. Red fur, contrasted highly with white fur, white and black wings, and CRAZY ASS EYES that I love.

Posted 14 years agoMy character, Badawia Wahida, actually does have a story. It’s very segmented and it’s mostly general ideas and incomplete storylines. Given that Badu is my alter-ego, it comes off as being Mary-Sueish. I have two visions of Badu. One is exactly like me. She’s cynical, moody, and not so innocent. She is a realist, like me, and one reason that stops me from actually taking time to write this story is that I prefer to write and read text that is non-fiction. The Badu in this story is similar to the “real” one, but she is more innocent and kind-hearted, which makes her a good projection of everyone else. Her entire life is idealized which means she gets the guy in the end - marriage, royalty, the whole deal. That’s not what my life is like and I am satisfied with what I have.
I have actually written the prologue and it’s a bit sexually charged. It’s a more detailed and intimate retelling of the Oedipus’s encounter with the Greek Sphinx. It’s basically the same story: The Sphinx is evil, Oedipus is the hero, he solves her riddle, and she kills herself by hoisting her body off a cliff which is a symbolic image (since she allowed her wings to give way) which I might revisit later.
So if you want to know Badu’s background, here is an outline and some ideas that I have:
This is a world that is technically an unmentioned alternate universe where mythological animals exist and it’s a very off-key retelling of history. A lot of things are altered.
THE Sphinx, Phix, terrorized the city of Thebes which left a bad impression on the Thebans. All sphinxes were seen as dangerous and it was encouraged to kill any and the animal’s skin would be kept as a trophy as it was seen that these animals were difficult to kill. In reality, sphinxes only real defense is to escape a dangerous situation by flying away.
Sphinxes remained elusive and secretive for this reason and were encouraged to never enter any human domain as they may meet their end. Badu’s mother died during childbirth (they’re born in eggs!) but she is communally raised in a clan, her father still able to care for her as well. So you know how the story goes: little Badu unwittingly finds her way into the city. She does this by flying after a pigeon after just learning how to fly and getting used to it and starting to enjoy herself. Of course she meets danger but her father comes to a quick rescue, after he was told by her half-sibling that she was headed towards human civilization. She witnesses his slaying and terrified, she hides in a burlap sack. In a short amount of time, the bag is lifted and is carried a long way. The bag is eventually opened, she meets an Egyptian mercant face-to-face. She becomes very frightened, but shivers in fear rather than taking on a defense demeanor.
The man lifts her out of the bag and she finds that she is on a sea vessel which is making its way to Egypt. He cares for her: feeding and providing water and introduces her to the other passengers and she watches them as they share with her excited and happy expressions, speaking in a language she doesn’t understand. After a while, she starts to feel more comfortable and her fear of being killed starts to wane. The man, whose name is Ini-herit names her Badawia Wahida (actually Arabic words, obviously not spoke at the time) which means “lone nomad.”
They eventually make their way to Giza where she sees an overwhelming amount of wonders. She sees The Great Sphinx for the first time as well as other living sphinxes. They are larger and wingless and are a species of sphinx simply called “desert sphinx” making her a “mountain sphinx.” The Egyptians worship the sphinx god named Horemakhet and He is honored by the grand monument (of the same name) that is now known as The Great Sphinx of Giza (this is factual). In turn, the Egyptians see the sphinxes of the mortal world as sacred however, the humble desert sphinx wants to be integrated in the community rather than placed on a pedestal. The truce is that a single sphinx or multiple find a single companion or a single family. Companions assist their sphinx or sphinxes in a human dominated world. In reciprocity, the sphinxes hunt and protect their companions. One of the major concerns is that humans will be used by sphinxes as servants, or humans may treat the sphinxes as pets. There are many stipulations that are entailed which led to a special mandating from a government official.
The Empyrean Line of the Sphinx was coined when a hierarchy of sphinx royalty emerged set up as a kingdom. The queen, king, or both work with a human government official of Giza appointed by Pharaoh (ruling from Cairo) to mandate the rights of both human and sphinx. On his, her, or their own, the royal(s) will uphold the laws of the sphinx community and regulate their overall place and power in Greater Cairo. Naturally, Badu becomes Ini-herit's companion. Other sphinxes care for her as well so that she doesn't lose sight of her species and learns how to be a good companion. They teach her how to hunt (as best they can as she must hunt in a different way) and assist her with strengthening her bravery.
Badu is special. Because of her wings, the Egyptians believe that she is a living goddess and is a direct offspring of Horemakhet. Because of this point of view, she is crowned as a princess, the next in line to be Queen of The Empyrean Line of the Sphinx. This is when she meets Tau Dakarai (meaning happy lion sort of, I dunno WHATEVER) for the first time. He is a mountain sphinx that is a gift from royals of another country (not sure which it will be) and was actually kidnapped by traders in the alps. Thereafter he was passed and traded until he found his way to be the companion of the human government official of Giza and his family. The gift giver, nor the receiver knew exactly where he came from. He is crowned prince in the same ceremony with Badu, next in line to be king. Still very young, they meet each other for play dates and become close friends, still confused about what their appointed royalty means.
As they age, Dakarai becomes more withdrawn and Badu becomes concerned. He won't share with her or with anyone what is bothering him. She visits him one night, they share a first kiss, and when she returns in the morning, he is gone. He is searched for but remains missing. This makes Badu very sad, but she is consoled by her companion and the other sphinxes. Unfortunately, not too long afterwards, Ini-herit is stricken with an infection and dies. Upset (and oh so dramatic) she leaves Giza as well.
This kind of starts her adventures. She travels different places and meets many different types of animals. I'd like her to meet some other mythological creatures: maybe a dragon, or griffin, or whatever...definitely a purushamriga (Indian Sphinx) and a duplicitous manticore. I'd also like her to cavort with lions, maybe be captured and put on display as one of the elusive mountain sphinxes, and go back to Greece to see if she can find her original clan but there is no sign of them.
Around the end, she travels to the alps wondering if her family had migrated to higher regions. Here, it shows the efficiency of the mountain sphinx's natural adaptation. Her fur grows longer as she travels to colder regions in a swift amount of time. Eventually, she bumps into Dakarai. They are both adorned with long fur and are of course happy to see each other and resume their friendship. He introduces her to his clan telling her they were the reason why he left Giza. He hadn't confided in her or anyone in Egypt that he was kidnapped and told her that he wanted to be reunited with his family and to protect them from maraudering humans. Unfortunately, many of them were missing. Left was his aunt and uncle, their young daughter, and his brother. The ones missing were kidnapped or killed by humans and they say that they still have run-ins with hunters. They also speak a language she doesn't understand so Dakarai has to translate.
Badu realizes that the best place for her and many sphinxes was back in Giza where they were respected. She suggests that they all travel towards Egypt where they will live better lives. Dakarai's uncle insists that they remain here and fight for their territory. It becomes a great conflict between Badu and his uncle, the rest remaining unsure about the suggestion. Meanwhile, Badu and Dakarai become much closer and fall in deep love with each other. Tragically in the end, both his uncle and young cousin are killed at the hands of humans, convincing his aunt and brother to sadly leave their home behind and travel to Giza to avoid their previous danger.
Upon Dakarai and Badu's return, it is a huge celebration. Officials and citizens insist that they renew their place in sphinx royalty still believing they are children of Horemakhet, also believing Dakarai's family are of the same divinity. His family become confused and Badu and Dakarai feel guilty about accepting royalty simply based on their genetic make-up. They try to convince the Gizans that they are only a species of sphinx, which all have wings. In turn, the Gizans claim that the breed itself is begotten of Horemakhet, that they themselves are blessed with their presence rather than the mountain sphinxes feeling blessed for finding refuge there. The Gizan and desert sphinxes encourage Dakarai and Badu to accept their appointation. What finally convinces them is when Dakarai's aunt takes Badu aside and says, "You have saved us from our demise at the hands of mankind and brought us to Giza to show that some humans can be trusted...a place where we are revered. You put great faith in these humans and believe they deserve a chance to give back to the Sphinx and in turn, believe the Sphinx deserve a chance at a life where humans respect their own kind. If anyone has the best interest in the Empyrean Line of the Sphinx, it is you." With that, she and Dakarai decide to oblige and they are given a ceremony where they are reinstated in unison with being wed together and are next in line behind the Queen Sphinx.
The story ends there, but would be followed by a sequel of their dealings within their new governmental power and have two children: first, Shoshan Kalila (beloved lotus) and second, Shoshan Madu (lotus of the people).
