Posted 11 years agoRar! :D
Sorry, couldn't resist an old school nerd reference. X3
But yes, I am indeed moving down to ATL, sunny Atlanta. It's just hit me that I'm packing my reduced kitchen up in its box right now, which pretty much means that shit just got real. Holy crap. XD
For as long as I've been thinking about moving somewhere, it feels weird to have it actually happening. A lot of debate and back-and-forth and doubt and everything else, but I'm going forward with it anyway, because I don't want to just keep doing what I'm doing. If I was still working this job in this apartment 5 years from now, I'd look back on those years with regret. And that's no good. After the crap that was last year, I resolved to change SOMETHING this year, because even if it was a change for the worse, at least I could say I tried.
And I strongly doubt it will be a change for the worse. The Atlanta furs are super welcoming, and I'm not entirely convinced they ever stop partying, ever, for any reason. XD
Exciting days ahead! Anyway, just wanted to make it known that I'm probably going to be hard to reach for some time. After the move, I work for a week, then down to austin, then back up to anthrocon. But after anthrocon, I get to go home, and just relax. ^^
Thanks to all the awesome people who have not let me give up, and to the folks down in ATL who put that city on the list of cities to consider. Couldn't have pulled this off without you guys. ^__^
Also... why the hell does my apartment hold so much stuff!? DX<

Side note: Still haven't moved yet!
Posted 11 years agoJust as sort of a follow up to the last journal, I've been surprised at how many people have gotten the impression that I've actually moved to a new city. XD I know I've been all over the place over the past two months, but I am still a resident of virginia; haven't packed my stuff in the car and moved to a new state just yet. ^__^
It is still my plan and intention to do so, but there's still a bit of a fierce competition on between the two front-runner cities. Should be an interesting year to come. :D

Eight of Ten, never again. XD
Posted 11 years agoWoooo, time for another toasty journal! :D
So, a few people have said, and probably more have silently noticed, that I haven't been around quite as much as usual of late. There is a good reason for this! Life has been super nuts, even by my standards. I've left town 8 of the past 10 weekends, which is a record I don't think I matched even in the crazyness of last year. As I have no intentions of making it 9 in 11, it's clearly time for a write-up! :D
Whirlwind recap!
One: Furry fiesta! Austin, TX, for furries and fun. Awesome time as always, I got dragged on stage to empty my pockets, hung with cool peeps and drank a lot. Pretty standard. ^^
Two: Fur squared! Madison, WI, with still more furries! This was another awesome time, spent with an almost completely different group of people, many of whom I met for the first time. Yet another weekend of staying up until 6am every night and getting super drunk.
This experience, two cons in two weekends, taught me a valuable lesson: DO NOT GO TO TWO CONS IN TWO WEEKENDS. X3 I am too old to stay up that late and drink that much. After the con, I had planned to stay around the Chicago/DeKalb area and check things out some, but con crud, work, and massive exhaustion all conspired to cut that short; I made the drive home on wednesday.
Three: Blissful break number one!
Four: Furthemore! Yet another con, this one in Baltimore, MD. After a visit with my parents for a night, it was off to more furry drunkenness, but at least I got some time to sleep before it. This was yet another group of people, with a few who were also at TFF. More good times!
Five: Video games! Trekked up to Falls Church, VA to visit a non-fur friend who will be a father sometime soon; clearly this meant we had to play video games all weekend while he still has free time. ^^
Six: Blissful break two!
Seven: Last-minute trip up to Washington, DC to hang out with a bunch of furs from the Atlanta area who were up that way sightseeing after a wedding. Quick trip, up and back, but still a good time, with yet more food and drinking. (I don't have a problem, I swear, probably XD)
Eight: Also a last-minute trip out to a cabin in the woods of virginia owned by a friend's parents, specifically as a way to try to unwind and stop thinking about everything. He'd been planning a cook-out there for months, and it was only at the last minute that it turned out I'd be able to go. By this point my supposed move is huge on my mind, and I just have no clue what I ought to do about it. This was a nice chill time right when I needed it.
Nine: Atlanta, GA, round one! I think it was wednesday of this week, the ATL crew made good on their threats to have me down for a visit, and the allure of a lan party was too much to pass up. ^^ Wednesday I had no plans, friday I was making the 8 hour drive after work.
This felt very much like a fur con, because the Atlanta furs party like every night of the week. XD They make a very strong case for why that should be where I move to. Stayed down there all week working from "home", which brings us to:
Ten: Atlanta, GA round two, and Hickory, NC. Finished out the week down south, and then stopped in Hickory overnight to visit a friend there, and managed to spot a few trains. ^^ Sunday I grabbed lunch with another friend in Winston-Salem, then dinner with my sister in Durham, NC, then (finally) made it back home.
This feels even more insane now that I've written it all out. O.O I can't possibly thank everyone enough for putting up with me, and letting me crash on couches when there weren't hotels. Not listing names 'cause I know I'll forget half of them, but you all know who you are! I love you guys; life would not be the same without all the fuzzies in my life. ^^ I could not ask for a better group of friends.
Continue being awesome, everyone. I'll try to catch back up with people, but first, I think I need to sleep for about a month. XD

Pimpage! Furfright! MFF! :D
Posted 12 years agoHey hey! Another update from toasty. Because I'm sure everybody really cares! 8D
Word around town is that
tyrse is doing a raffle for some arts from
fierglief. Fier does awesome work, you can see two of them in my gallery if you're unlazy enough to look. Check him out! Contest info is here.
Now, that out of the way, toasty is indeed going to furfright this weekend! :D Who else will be there?
And lo, since I'm sure I won't actually get around to posting a journal until well after new year's, I might as well also mention that I'm also heading to MFF! Should also be a good con; looking forward to all the parties and seeing everyone who will be there. ^__^
Until next time, stay big, my friends! :D

Off to the land of no cell phones :D
Posted 12 years agoHey all!
Been awhile since there was a toasty journal. And what do you know!? I have nothing useful to report! 8D
Job has gone lame, but still quite glad to have one. Gonna be back in New York City in two weeks, but for now, the most pressing thing is camping! Heading up into the mountains of the uh.. dudeman National Forest park north of Harrisonburg, VA, with a few furry friends.
Will be dropping offline tomorrow afternoon, and won't return until late on labor day--there's no cell signal at the park, which is one of its best selling points, so I won't be able to respond to anyone on anything until I'm home.
Hope everybody has a good labor day weekend! :D Catch you all on the flipside.

New York here I come!
Posted 12 years agoTime for a new journal to get rid of that failed FWA room search.
So, it's official, toasty fox is headed up to the big apple. I'll be there from later tonight all the way until friday the 24th. And then probably another week or two sometime later. That's all assuming I don't have to stay in New York for a full 2 months.
I'll be somewhere around madison ave. and 28th street. Hopefully there's food to be had. :D Gonna come home a fat fox. >_<
This'll be the longest work trip by far, and also the largest customer I've ever been stuck with. Wish I was getting to visit the city under better circumstances, but ah well. Can't be helped ^_^
Anybody know of extra good places for food I should try to visit?
Edit: Right, the whole reason I wanted to post this. I'll be on-site at a client, so there's a decent chance I won't be able to be on IM at all except for a short bit in the evening. So if I seem missing, that's why. ^^;;

Need a room for FWA?
Posted 12 years agoBit of a long shot at this point, I know, but I figure I might as well ask around.
Anyone out there thinking of going to FWA, and still need a room? Or, anyone crammed 6 people to a room thinking of splitting that out to two rooms? Turns out it's too late to cancel a reservation, so I've got a room that's not gonna see any use.
The reservation is from Thursday to Monday, and is for a two queen bed room.
Note: I need someone to completely take over the room, i.e., your name goes on the reservation, and you swipe your credit card to check in. (I won't be in Atlanta at all.) The room is all yours, and you'll have to handle finding roommates to split the bill with if you want to do that.
tl;dr Two bed room at FWA completely vacant, Thursday-Monday. Comment or note me if interested.
(Journal will likely be removed at some point.)

New journal! And furry fiesta 2013
Posted 12 years agoHoly crap... So, it's apparently been a good 7 months since I posted a journal. This will be journal number 12; which I guess is about right; I average one journal every 6 months over the life of my FA account.
ANYWAY! It's past due to get something new up here :D
Might as well take a chance to say "welcome" to all the new watchers, which has to be like 2 years worth of watchers at this point. I'm trying to be better about posting more of the art of toasty I have, but I'll likely continue to be slow about it for the foressable future. ^^;;
Also, furry fiesta is happening this weekend! :D Looking forward to seeing everyone who's gonna be there. [insert furry fiesta meme journal that I'm too lazy to complete here]
Guess that's about it! XD

FA watcher updated
Posted 13 years agoHello hello!
FA watcher version alpha eight (right!) is out. You can grab it from the normal download page here.
Hitting the download link if you already have the app installed should update the app to the latest version, while preserving all of your settings. You DO NOT need to uninstall the old version first! If you do, you'll have to reconfigure everything.
This is a minor update, just to fix a bug I've just noticed where when FA clears out all the logged in sessions, the app doesn't figure this out and just fails. Most users will probably be experiencing this problem today. I'm not sure why this wasn't an issue before, to be honest.
Highly recommended update if the watcher stopped working for you today! :D

FA watcher app for android
Posted 13 years agoAaah, lazyness, how it delays things. XD
Wanted to make a few tiny changes to the thing before I posted a journal here, but meh, they're making changes to FA, so the time to strike is nigh! Even if I am all the way across the country traveling on business.
SO! Announcing the FA watcher app for android. Woo, *fanfare*, whatever. You can get it here. Free! Download, install, add your accounts, and make sure you tap the "settings" next to your message counts to configure what makes it trigger.
I was going to put it on the android market before I released it, but I think this will have to do. Perhaps a lot of screaming people will motivate me to improve it. And hey, if no one cares, then I won't have wasted my time! :D
What does it do?
Watches your FA account (or accounts, if you have more than one) and makes some sort of notification when you get new messages. You can set the color and sound, and can control which of the six kinds of messages produce a notification. You can also decide how often to check. It's as flexible as I can make it. When you get new messages, the app will link you to FA to look at them.
What does it NOT do?
It does not, and will not, attempt to actually display any images from FA, or really anything except the "12S, 5C, 1F, 4N" text string. All viewing happens with your phone's browser, just like always. This just makes a noise when you get new notes and such. If the admins want, other things (like admin alerts and such) could be added, but I'm not going to try to parse the site, that's a losing battle. Hopefully, the admins won't be too put out over it.
I've been using this for some time now, and it's stable and feature-complete enough that I haven't had a need to go in and modify it in some time. There's a lot of things I'd like to add, but it hasn't been important enough. If it doesn't work, or you think it doesn't work, send me a note, I'll try to get it going again.
FA watcher app for android
Warning! Setting it to check every 5 mintues will use quite a big chunk of data! (Roughly 2-3MB per day.) Beware if you don't have an unlimited plan!

2012, wooo! :D
Posted 14 years agoIn the interest of not having a con-related journal on my front page for more than a year again, have a happy new year journal!
Can't begin to name the awesome people who helped make 2011 even better than 2010. And 2010 had set a high bar indeed! Thanks and *hugs* to everyone. Can't want to see what 2012 brings.
Goals for this year:
--Continue posting the back log of commissioned art to my account.
--Make a proper wider release of the android app for watching furaffinity messages (link).
--Cook more, use my christmas kitchen knives. Perhaps invest in a crock pot.
--Go through stuff at parents' house, sort out meaningful mementos from the crap
--Shred or otherwise dispose of 8 (right!) years of college and high school papers
--Find a home for all these d&d version 3.0/3.5 books
--Edit and post the balloon story
--Write more
--A bunch of other stuff I can't remember because it's late.
Anyway, I'll call this a journal and head to bed now. Yaay sleep! I love sleep. I'll be at FC this year, as long as my luck with air travel doesn't prevent it. But I don't think that will happen. 7th time is the charm! It'll go fine. Can't wait for that, and it's in less than two weeks at this point. eeeEEE! ^_^

MFF Bound!
Posted 14 years agoYaaay, this week is MFF week! I know a bunch of people who are going, can't wait! ^_^ Going to be rooming with my
kaminwolf and traveling there in style over land with:

.
Can't wait to hang out with with old friends, meet new friends, and drink woo-dams and beer. Mayflower* will hopefully make an appearance too. Going to sit under the glass dome for the second time, and this time, it will be quite different. ^_^
(And yes, I know this is early, but I have to travel up to DC this week for two days for google search appliance training, and between that and driving to Chicago, I know I'm not gonna have a spare moment to put this up.)
-toasty out
*Disclaimer: Toasty does NOT approve of other variations of this name! D8<

California and Furfright here I come!
Posted 14 years agoHoly crap, it's been only three weeks shy of a year since my last journal! D8 That will not do. Let me give the condensed version:
MFF 2010: Yaay, so awesome. Met Wolfus!
Dec 2010: Now dating Wolfus! *hugs Wolfus*
Mar 2011: New job still doesn't suck too much, woohoo!
May 2011: OMG crazy canada business trip!
AC 2011: Yaay, second anthrocon rocked too!
Aug 2011: Second canada trip, yay!
Yeah, that sums it up pretty well. Gonna try to not wait so long next time.
So, now to the present! Work is sending me to Google headquarters next week for some training. First time to the San Francisco area! (Or should I say San Jose area? G HQ is in Mountain View; I dunno which metro area it really belongs to.) Anyone who knows good places to eat, I'd love to know! I will probably have a car I can drive, a corporate expense account covering meals, and not much else to do, so suggestions welcome XD.
Then, less than a week after I get back here, it's off to the airport again, this time Cromwell, CT bound for FurFright! This will be my first time there, and I'm looking forward to it. New con! ^_^ Anyone else heading up there? 8D
This should do for now. Yaay, new journal up!

New job
Posted 15 years agoYay, I has new job!
It's funny how a few months can change your perspective quite a bit. I just popped on to my own page to update the blurb a bit, and I was quite surprised to see what I had written about my job. (Duplicated here since I'm about to change it.)
"Computer programmer by trade. Note: I hate computers. Beware of letting your hobby become your job! *is trying to find a new career* Currently I'm washing dishes for a living and it's way more satisfying than the programming for a living ever was. (Well, it's more satisfying if you ignore the difference in salary, anyway)"
Whaaat? I know I wrote it, but man, it sure doesn't match what I think now. That job went through a lot of interesting turns, but at the end of the day, it is pretty tough work for 30 hours a week that doesn't pay all the bills. Now that I see the light at the end of the tunnel (6 days as of this writing), I am so psyched to be out of there it isn't even funny.
Not that I regret the decision to take the job. Quite the contrary--I think without it I may not have been motivated to move back towards what I'm good at. It's left me with a better perspective on employment, which will hopefully let me avoid some of the petty gripes I've had about my past computer jobs.
The new job is with a computer company up in D.C., and sounds pretty awesome. I get to work with the google search appliance, probably help write cell phone apps, and generally fix things that break. From the sound of it, it shouldn't ever be boring, which is a huge plus. But really, it doesn't much matter what the specifics are. I get enough cash to pay the bills (and get me to furry cons, yay), and I won't be cooking or washing dishes or cleaning the floor. (omg why does the floor get so dirty)
So, all in all, yay! This probably didn't need to be a journal post, but I was tired of AC 2010 still being the most recent journal, and that blurb about my current job made my brain hurt a bit.

AC 2010
Posted 15 years agoWow. It's several days since the end of anthrocon, of course, but thanks to work and golf this is the first time I've really had to sit down and write anything about it.
AC was my first con ever, and it was the most awesome weekend in the history of awesome weekends. I've been seriously trying to think of some other awesome weekend to compare it to, and I can not come up with anything even remotely close. Not for a long time back into my past. I would have to go so far back that it's really not a fair comparison.
There was much drinking (woooo-damn), and a ton of cool people met. I got to watch airline pilots walk through the lobby of the Westin with "wtf" plastered all over their faces and it was hilarious. I bought a tail, probably at a huge markup, but it was worth it because I got to wear it all weekend. Even if the tail would have been free if I waited until I got home, it still would have been money well spent.
I'm in at least one video on youtube, and I'm surprised to learn that I don't care. I've told two non-furries so far that I went to anthrocon. One of them will tell others. I'm interested to see how far the news can get.
Five months ago (if you'll pardon me for being emo for a moment) I was sure I was going to die all alone without one single other person in the whole world knowing I was furry. Hell, I was even trying to deny it to myself without realizing what I was doing. And now, I've been to anthrocon, I'm considering going to MFF, I know a whole bunch of furries, and I'm even letting my non-furry friends know the truth.
It's scary how fast your life can change, especially after it's been stagnent for so many years.
A huge thanks and *hugs* to everyone who made AC so awesome. [End of silly emotional rant]

Species!
Posted 15 years agoEleven years. It has been something like eleven years since I first started looking at furry art. Eleven years, five months, if I'm to believe the time stamps stored in the very oldest of my saved furry images.
But it's only now that I finally feel like I belong. I owe it to the gentle encouragement of the awesome friends I met only a few months ago, and the gentle threats of one in particular who refused to let me give up just because I didn't know where to start.
Thank you guys. I would never have been able to do it alone.
Toastedwheat is now an arctic fox, as of May 22, 2010.

Bah, why can't I write a short story?
Posted 16 years agoSo after finishing the story I just posted and finding it clocks in at something crazy like 14,000+ words, I randomly decided to see how my other stories measure up:
$ cat CVS/Entries | grep "/1.[0-9][0-9]*/" | cut -d "/" -f 2 | tr "\\n" "\\0" | xargs -0 wc -w | sort -n
1188 Lucario.txt
2623 Krystal.txt
3150 Zangoose.txt
3199 umbreon.txt
4947 ideas.txt
5826 Renamon.txt
14568 blackmarble.tex
18615 naruto.txt
23034 Lucario2.txt
30114 Pika.txt
My mind boggles. There are others I cut from this list because they're from so long ago (2002) that I would have to make up a psuedonym for my psuedonym just to be able to post them without embarassment.
The files I left in the list are the files that I would arbitrarily call "good". The ones shorter than 5000 words or so are all just sparks of inspiration that never managed to go anywhere. And hell, of the stories greater than 5000 words, only renamon.txt, naruto.txt, and blackmarble.tex are finished. So a story of mine is either short, "good", or unfinished. This is not a good state of affairs.
My longest, which incidentally is one of the few that contains all original characters (despite the file name it is not pokemon related), is over twice the length of Macrophile Planet, and not even finished. Not even close. And M.P. seems like it's too long to be posting.
Even my file of ideas of crap to write about is almost 5,000 words.
Blarg. Maybe I should work more on music. FL studio makes it easy to keep the length in check because it's such a pain to do long things that aren't repetitive.

Bah, posting it anyway
Posted 16 years agoYeah, well, I had hoped to upload one of the stories I'd written as a first submission, but I keep on procrastinating that, so rather than wait forever, I'll just upload the results of recent texture work. Hopefully I can be forgiven for Yet Another Krystal Render.
Now if I could just get over my love of reflective textures, or figure out how to make them look better, I'd be all set.
And perhaps someday I'll get a story proofread enough to be worth posting, too.

wtf?
Posted 18 years agoSo... has anyone else randomly clicked on their userpage to discover that some works were randomly fav'd? Not that I mean to dis the 4 things listed there, but I certainly didn't +fav any of them.
I could believe I hit the +fav link by mistake a few times, but in a few of those cases I'm pretty sure I've never even seen the works in question.
I guess I'll remove them from favs, hopefully nobody gets irritated.
Time to change my password, just in case.
