About The Car
Posted 11 years agoSo for those who follow my twitter you'll have noticed I mentioned my car got a nice bath in some flood waters in West Virgina, here's the story;
We had tooling around in Cass before he had to head in for the night, it had been pouring down rain all day and the moment the sun set visibility went to zero. On our way to the hotel we see what looks like a car accident, police cars and ambulances on the side of the road, flashing lights and the works, but we of course can't see around them because of how dark it is. While passing we slow down to about 5 mph and make eye contact with several officers, however they didn't motion for us to stop or make any attempt to warn us what they where actually there for. So after passing we sped up right into what was then 16 inches of rushing water that had flooded the road, we drive about 1/3 of the way through before we fully grasp what we've gotten ourselves into. At 2/3's of the way across the car can't travel any further and we end up stuck in the middle of this torrent.
There was another group of ambulances stationed on the opposite side of the flood waters whom we signaled with over with a couple beeps of the horn. As they floated there vehicle down to us I made sure everything was elevated and off the floor, when we where pulled out of the car we had to leave everything behind. One of the paramedics ended up saying the road was passable, but then followed that statement up by saying they where blocking off the road because they had just pulled someone else out.
Thankfully the team at the Cass Scenic RR is made up of the most helpful and generous people who put our trip back on track and helped iron out all the issues they could. When the car was recovered we where told that water was over the hood for most of the night and that nothing inside would be dry, but as luck would have it only a small bit of water got to the floor inside the car and all of our belongings where fine. The engine had a fare amount of water get into it, and we suspected the cars computer got some as well so deemed it as unsafe to drive even if the engine would start. I had family working a couple hours away so I had them come rescue us when it came time to return home, the car was a rental so all that I've got to worry about is some paper work.
All in all the trip was absolutely amazing despite that indecent and things could have been a lot worse. If you haven't been to Cass you are doing yourself a disservice, just drive something that's a little more all terrain than a Nissan Maxima and check the weather too.
Not many photos of the trip will end up on FA, but all them have already been uploaded here:

Also something to note; cell phone service is disabled in that area by the NRAO and US Navy/NSA (yeah, really) so if there hadn't been anyone around it would have been an interesting night. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United.....dio_Quiet_Zone )
