Technoramble: Power Supplies
Posted 14 years agoAnother long-winded babbling about technology in your life.
Today, those little warts, bricks, cables, and things you plug into the wall to charge your phone, run your radio, and fap to dirty pictures on FA with--
POWER SUPPLIES!
The under-appreciated workhorse of our digital world.
There's two common kinds of power supplies, linear and switch-mode supplies.
First, let's talk about linear supplies.
These are very simple affairs, and are easy to understand.
AC power comes into a transformer, which steps the voltage to a ballpark-figure close to what is desired - still AC. A rectifier - usually a set of diodes - convert this AC into a rapidly pulsing DC. We still can't use this though, so filters - usually a capacitor - are added to filter this down into a stable DC supply. Finally, a regulator clamps the final output to a strict DC output that can do whatever you ask of it.
Linear power supplies are generally rugged, and have a comparatively low incidence of failure. They also kick out very little electrical noise, and the filter tends to screen out most noise that's coming in on the power line. When one does fail, it's usually either the regulator or the filter-caps.
Switch-mode power supplies - commonly called "switchers" for short - are a lot more complicated than linear supplies, and were created to address a few of their shortcomings.
Incoming power is immediately rectified and filtered to create a high-voltage DC power line, which feeds a very high frequency "chopper" circuit. The chopper feeds a transformer, then the HF power feed's re-rectified and re-filtered before finally being passed into the regulators for output.
Switchers have gotten maddeningly popular because of a few advantages over linear supplies - efficiency, adaptability, and size.
Despite the many steps in a switcher compared to a linear supply, by running at such a high frequency the switcher can realize incredible efficiency. A lot less power is lost in the transformer by running it at such high frequency over the comparatively low frequencies of incoming line.
The chopper circuit can also be designed with a feedback system, that tells it if it needs to adjust its output up or down. This allows a switcher to be able to automatically adjust to varying input voltages without any effect on output.
Higher frequency power can be put through very small transformers, compared to line-frequency power. It's also a lot easier to filter with capacitors. Combine these two, and you have a dramatically smaller power supply, even in the face of needing so many components.
Unfortunately, switchers have their drawbacks, and as such linear supplies haven't died yet.
One of the biggest things is noise. Despite the ease of filtering out of the DC line itself, sensitive analog devices - such as radios - need the cleaner output of a linear supply. You'd be able to hear the buzz of the switching frequency in your radio otherwise.
Another is shorter life expectancy. Inherently, adding more components adds more areas to fail - especially those fail-happy capacitors. As the main capacitors begin to fail, they affect the chopper circuit, lowering its frequency. This reduces overall performance of the supply. By time this gets low enough for a human ear to hear it, the supply's already degraded badly and should be considered "about to fail".
Regardless of what kind of power supply you have, you can help extend its life by unplugging it when you aren't using it. Keeping all those parts energized unloaded can actually harm some higher power supplies, and it also causes undue wear on all the components that could easily be prevented. Add in that you're powering something that's doing literally nothing - save juice, save your power supplies, unplug when not in use!
Also, pay attention to the rating of the supply, versus the thing you're powering. Overloading any power supply is very damaging, especially to switchers. I've destroyed one completely through an extended overload. Not that linear supplies are immune! I've melted a wall-wart supply down through an extended overload condition.
I hope I've shed some light on this complicated topic in a way you can understand, and given you a new appreciation for this tireless workforce.

1. Post a link to your entry with the MOST VIEWS: if there is a tie, just post the top most one.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5223997/ Serris Sketches, by Gravewalker
No wonder it's most-viewed. Tied to a great artist like
gravewalker, and that she actually pimped it when I got a full commission of the same character...
2. Post a link to your entry with the most favorites: if there is a tie, just post the top most one.
Same as above, for the same reasons.
Second place is my long-time featured submission, "Big Stretch".
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5028287/ As one of the first pics people see when they visit my page, and that I scored such an impressive shot...
3. Post a link to an entry you can't understand why so many people favorited, because in your own opinion, it doesn't deserve them.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5533343/ "The Snowy Clearing", my first (and currently only) music upload. I can cut myself some slack, given it's my first original soundtrack, but still, is it really that good?
4. Post a link to an entry that got the most comments.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5361176/ A scrapped WiP of Feyrah's Fight scene on my calculator, simply because I made a call-out for comments! Thanks for the advice, everybody. :3
5. Post a link to an entry of your OWN personal favorite drawing (post up to five).
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6333690/ I like this one so much I cut it out of the calendar and taped it to my desk. :3

A $1k Brick
Posted 14 years agoAka, epic upgrade fail.
I was trying to add some more RAM and a new drive to my PC the other day.
I power it up - and an immediate "RAM fail" beep code. Confused, I start shuffling memory chips around.
Now, I did major research, after making the mistake of buying RAM cards that're too large for my motherboard last time. This time I made sure the cards were the right size, the right rating, the right voltage, everything.
ALL FOUR STICKS ARE UNRESPONSIVE.
How the hell do I get four defective RAM sticks?
Better yet, how can four sticks who're rated exactly the same be incompatible with a fifth with the exact same rating?
The only thing different is the brand. I didn't realize a motherboard who'd been reviewed for not being pickyy about RAM would be that picky about RAM that who made it would matter that much.

Of knives and displays...
Posted 14 years agoThe two do not mix.
And the knife usually wins.
Ah, yes, I was given a nice little pocket knife. What does the puff do? Drop it in the same pocket as his MP3 player.
*Crack.*
Now I have two MP3 players with broken screens. (I sat on the first one.)
Fortunately I have found a place that sells the screens, so I bought two of them, and will have two fully operable MP3 players when they arrive.

AUGH! (Recording Rant)
Posted 14 years agoWindows 7 Line Input SUCKS!!!
It delays the intput to output by a very slight margin, like less than a second.
But it's enough to RUIN my ability to play the song while recording.
I'm going to have to put in a splitter and monitor via headphones while recording...
... I hate Windows 7 Sound Recorder as well. Give me back Windows XP Sndrec!!! ;.;
(As a side note, I'm trying to record Snowy Clearing live on the keyboard.)

New Music...
Posted 14 years ago... and my insufficient skill to be able to play it.
Must I keep conceiving musical pieces that I can't play?
I've named it "Raindrops" after the melody that seems to suggest rain droplets hitting a puddle rhythmically. The bass chords come in, suggesting a dark, bleak land ... the specifics of which are obscured by the haze and rain.
I really need to get good at this keyboard.

Dead Server
Posted 14 years agoAs some of you may know, my laptop pulling web server duty just decided it had enough of life and stopped booting up.
I have multiple systems available to fill in. Which should I choose?
1: PC. Intended to use as an interim choice until something else can be had.
Advantage: Exceptionally powerful computer can handle any web hosting task with ease.
Disadvantage: While efficient, it draws the most power of any of these options, and, well, making my main PC a webhost would mean I can't use it anymore.
2: Netbook. Convert my banged-up miniature laptop to do web duty.
Advantage: Best compromise between power use and processing strength.
Disadvantage: I lose my primary portable computer, and will have to buy a new one to replace it.
3: BeagleBoard. A tiny little computer board thingy that has no fans and draws next to no power.
Advantage: By far the most efficient of my choices.
Disadvantage: Doesn't have the horsepower to run the Minecraft server I had on the old system.
4: A new computer. I don't need to explain this.
Advantage: Can be custom configured to suit my needs for the web host.
Disadvantage: One word: Money.

And a new calculator
Posted 14 years agoNot long after drawing "Feyrah", I've sold the calculator she was drawn on. With her picture saved in it. xD
My new Weapon of Choice is a prime-condition TI-86, Yard Sale aquisition for $10.
The TI-86 has a completely different menu system from the 83+, and also has a higher resolution display with finer "dot pitch" (more pixels per inch). This means that any new calculator art I draw should look better.
Also, my next picture in the works is Feyrah again, this time using the TI86 menu to fight off an undecided enemy.

I've broken out my TI-83 and decided to try my hand at drawing a wolf anthro/werewolf on it. She's coming out quite nicely. I'll post her when I can!

Battery Babbling
Posted 14 years agoAlright, everybody sit down. I've got some more tech tips for you.
Today, it's all the different kinds of batteries out there, and how to best take good care of them. What they want, in essence.
General Warning: If you're using multiple batteries, stop use and check all batteries if your device suffers a sudden power loss. This applies to battery packs too -- one battery may be lower than the rest...
First, we have two large categories. "Primary" cells are the ones most people know. These are non-rechargeables, like the Alkaline AA's. Let's talk about these first.
Carbon-Zinc: "Traditional" batteries. This is the oldest chemistry in the book, and also the lowest capacity of all primary cells. Hard to find anymore.
"Heavy Duty": An enhanced version of Cu-Zn batteries. Better for higher drain devices. You can buy a 4-pack for a buck, but they still don't last very long.
Alkaline: The most common primary cell you can buy. Inexpensive and long lasting. These batteries are best suited for low drain devices, as they run down faster at high load.
Lithium: Not to be confused with lithium-based secondary cells, which will be discussed later. High energy density is well suited for higher power devices. Could power low power devices for ages.
Other Chemistries: I can't weigh in on them, as I haven't researched them.
"Secondary Cells" are rechargeable. Like primary cells, they come in many flavors. Here's some of the more common ones.
Nickel-Cadmium: The iconic rechargeable battery. Low energy density, rugged, light weight. Work best in medium power devices, and hold their charge while stored. Should be discharged until the powered device is unusable before recharge.
Nickel Metal Hydride: An enhanced rechargeable battery, these have improved energy density over Ni-Cd cells for slightly heavier weight. Very forgiving charge characteristics, but standard cells have a self-discharge problem. "Long Shelf Life" batteries don't have this problem. Best suited for high drain devices. Charge until the batteries are warm. Hot batteries are overcharged.
Lithium Chemistry: An extremely high energy density has allowed these series of batteries to revolutionize our mobile lives, but they're also the most dangerous batteries yet. Very delicate batteries that need to be handled with care. Work best in low drain devices, but modern cells can handle higher loads. You can charge them before they're empty, similar to NiMH.
Most batteries are legally required to have a safety device in them, but this may not always be able to help you before a dangerous condition exists.
Never:
Overcharge or over-discharge the battery.
Strike, drop, or otherwise subject it to excessive impact.
Expose the battery to heat, or allow the battery to get very hot.
Use a damaged or bloated ("distended") battery pack.
Obviously abuse the battery. If you wouldn't do it to the device the battery's in, don't do it to the battery.
Handle loose battery cells.
Lead Acid: These batteries are most iconic as the rugged plastic brick that starts your car every day, but smaller ones can be found all around if you look hard enough. These brutish batteries have poor energy density and are extremely heavy, but can crank out incredible amounts of power for a short time. Specialized "starting" batteries should be kept above half power. No Lead-type battery should be allowed to sit discharged or freeze. This is the only kind of battery that can be kept on charge indefinitely under "float" mode.
Be careful. These kinds of batteries contain corrosive acid that can be readily spilled. Wash your hands immediately if it touches you.
A non-sealed battery needs to have its water level checked and occasionally added. Clean the top of the battery, and only add distilled water.
That's about it for today. Have a nice night.

How To Wash Your Laptop
Posted 15 years agoAka, a professional's take on electronics and water.
If there's one thing everybody knows, it's that water is conductive. This is why you see warning tags and special devices for electrical appliances that tend to be used in wet areas.
There's a few fun details though, that some tend to omit. Your average electronics are 100% washable!
Let's use the titular laptop as an example, as it contains almost everything you could encounter in an electronic device, although you can apply this to your cell phone, MP3 player, or even a full size PC.
Because impurities can leave water spots, and these may be conductive, I recommend using purified, if not distilled, water. Also, this should go without saying, but ensure your device is dry before restoring power.
First and most obvious is to remove the AC adapter, and the main battery.
Keyboard and touchpad: Directly washable.
Case: Washable and wipe-down-able.
Display: Displays are a special case. You must use distilled water if you wash a display. I recommend simply wiping the LCD module down with a clean, lint-free cloth, to avoid getting water inside the display, where it'll be hard to dry and may leave spots.
Speakers: Don't wash paper-cone speakers. Metal-cone or plastic-cone speakers can be washed.
Microphone: Directly washable. If PCB-mounted, see "Internal PCBs".
Webcam: Not recommended, same considerations as Display.
Internal PCBs: Watch for hidden batteries that may be directly soldered to the board, or hiding in miniature sockets. Leave the boards set for 4 hours or more after complete power removal to let any capacitors bleed off their charge before washing. Boards with direct-soldered batteries should either not be washed, or have the battery professionally removed before washing.
AC adapter: You should only have to wipe it down with a damp cloth, but they are washable. If you choose to do so, disassemble the adapter and follow the same considerations as Internal PCBs above.
Battery: Never wash batteries. You can wipe them down, but don't allow water to reach the contacts.

Important: Li-Ion Battery Safety Tips!
Posted 15 years agoit's time for me to flex my technological knowledge and help out the greater Furry community.
Caution: Teal Deer.
Today, I'm going to teach you how to identify a specific defect in Lithium Ion battery chargers, and how to safely handle devices that have this defect.
I've nicknamed it the "End of Charge Detect defect", hereby called the EOC Flaw, because the "End of Charge" detection circuit doesn't work correctly in devices with this flaw. Namely, if you disconnect the device from power, then connect it again shortly, it will try to recharge the still fully charged battery, resulting in a possibly dangerous overcharge that could reduce the life of your battery, or even cause a fire. (This has really happened in cases eerily similar to the conditions surrounding this defect...)
Anything with a Li-Ion or Li-Po battery may have the EOC flaw. Cell phones, laptops, iPods, cameras, you name it. My Camcorder and Nintendo DS Lite both have the defect. My old cell phone has a really weird charger circuit, and I can't tell if it's flawed or not.
How to Tell: Recharge the questionable device until it indicates that its battery is full. Then unplug it, and promptly (within less than a minute) plug it back in.
Good: Device only attempts to charge for a very short time (few seconds), or immediately displays "Fully charged".
Faulty: Device enters a normal charge cycle. If it does this, unplug it. o.o
If Your Device has the Flaw: It's deceptively simple to work around the EOC flaw, once you know it's there. You just have to remember to run your battery down to at least either 80% charge, the first "segment" of the meter, or a half hour under normal use for things that don't have a meter (like your DS), before you try to recharge it again. It's normally safe to leave these devices on charge overnight, but I'd recommend against this, as a power flicker may cause it to try to overcharge its battery again...
If you've identified a device you've been using for a while to have this defect, please inspect its battery. If it appears bloated, you should replace it ASAP, as it's already been damaged by being overcharged.
I don't normally believe in chain messages, but this is an important message that needs to get out there. Please link back to it, and spread the word.

New Camera - Expect Pictures!
Posted 15 years agoHey there.
It's about freaking time I made good on my artist type as "Photographer".
I finally got myself a brand spankin' new digital camera - an Olympus Stylus Tough 6020. It's capable of 14MP, but I won't be posting those here to FA. Anyways, expect pictures of animals from me in the near future!
