Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Posted a year agoone of the best animation studios spent a ridiculous amount of time working on it and even if you've read the manga it's 100% worth your time
Nanoha Movies
Posted 2 years agoNanoha the 1st and 2nd Movie
These are honestly just better versions of the first 2 seasons of the anime. Higher animation budgets and all the unnecessary stuff has been stripped out. Made me realize that the first 2 seasons had about 2-3 hours of content each. Also goes to the logical progression where Raising Heart is now a gun that can sometimes be a magic staff.
Nanoha Detonation and Reflection
Had some hopes for these coming off the other movies but like man even as a Nanoha enjoyer these sucked. There's like over a dozen new characters introduced who have no real time to breathe and they do a "the real villain was actually this guy" twist like 4 times with characters that we have seen less and less until it's revealed the final villain is just like some guy. Also continuing on the progression of the first two movies Raising Heart makes the conversion into being just a gun.
Edit: Apparently like half of the characters from Detonation and Reflection are from a set of PSP exclusive Nanoha fighting games and are used for a completely different plot which explains why half of them are "the heroes but evil" and also why they feel weird and out of place and are introduced like we should know who they are

Gushing About Magical Girls
Posted 2 years agoif you want softcore bdsm pornography featuring 14 year olds this is that
personally i did not want it
was a bit disappointed cuz the character designs were cute and the premise sounded fun but yeah i tapped out after the first episode

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Posted 2 years agoI can see why this show has remained a staple like 25 years later. The final act features a really gross villain but I think his particular grossness is meant to exaggerate the point.
Also the movie is a very well animated fever dream. I think I understood it mostly but man it was borderline incomprehensible.

I'm in Love with the Villainess
Posted 2 years agoGonna be honest, if I hadn't seen so many recommendations for this show I would have quit very early on. The MC spends more than half the show as a wretched goblin, and even as a wretched goblin enjoyer I found her to be a bit much.
That said, the back half actually started doing some stuff. I actually got invested in the story and a few episodes hit home. Will probably check out the manga up to wherever it ends currently (especially since it sounds like the later light novels really go off the rails)
Also props to the English cast. Very diverse, and the actor for the MC could chew the scenery and be a total goblin but also be somber or serious convincingly. Also casting a trans actor to play a character I understand comes out trans in the next act. Given the popularity of the series I'm assuming we'll see a second season eventually.

Shy (cour 1)
Posted 2 years agoThe first anime since JoJo's Bizarre Adventure to make me actually pick up the manga. Even knowing what was coming I still didn't expect the silly superhero show to make me feel things.

Healer Girl
Posted 2 years agoA show with a bizarre and absolutely fascinating premise that it squanders with primarily high school slice of life stuff that in no way requires any portion of said premise
Gatchaman CROWDS
Posted 2 years agoa henshin hero show that questions the very nature and necessity of superheroes as a concept
was pretty good overall, kinda whiffed the landing
also the main hero theme is a banger

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (series)
Posted 2 years agoAfter watching Symphogear got a lot of recommends for this as it's cited as an inspiration
Nanoha Season 1 - Some curious aesthetic for a magical girl show but goddamn it is plodding. I only stuck through this because I was curious to see where the show would go.
Nanoha A's - Marked improvement over the first season. Fate is far more interesting as an ally than she was as a rival, and doubling the cast size really keeps the plot moving and storylines interesting.
Nanoha StrikerS - It's Magical Girl Top Gun? We have abandoned the previous setting in favor of training for the wizard navy. The pacing for this show is kinda up and down and they set up a lot of fights that are honestly kinda frustrating to watch. The novelty of the setting was interesting and the varying scope of stakes was engaging but man this one tested my patience. Also we have moved in the evolution of Nanoha magical items from staves to staves that are like guns to just guns.
Nanoha ViVid - Was not expecting the shift to a sports anime but honestly it was refreshing to move away from wizard military and world ending threats to a very interpersonal story of growth. Shame that it just ends in the middle of a storyline though. It's clear there was supposed to be a second half that just never happened.
I'll probably check out the movies at some point because they have to be improvements over the originals (the first movie especially has to be better paced than the first season of the show).

Symphogear again
Posted 2 years agoWell I finished the whole run and it was a ride
Symphogear - very gay, very heartfelt, a lot of cool fights. a lot more graphic violence than I was expecting
Symphogear G - wow they got a budget huh? very good season with all the personal plots playing directly into the main story
Symphogear GX - i appreciate a villain whose entire plot is simple revenge. the new transformations this season were cool but dark backstories for each one of them felt kinda forced and didn't have enough time to breathe
Symphogear AXZ - it was kinda like we were doing season 3 again? the pacing was also kind of weird. also the main villain was super boring
Symphogear XV - they got all the money and then asked if it was possible to make a season entirely out of finales. and also the graphic violence is back?
Overall, very worth a watch and I'll be going back because with how busy that show is I know i missed a ton of stuff my first time around

Grimgar: Ashes and Fantasy
Posted 2 years agoFinding out about this one a long time after it came out. Interesting to see an Isekai that focuses on a group of fuckups instead of the usual power fantasy bullshit.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles
Posted 2 years agoIt's pretty fun. I don't know why the anime ended quite where it did but I'll probably keep reading the manga.
Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion
Posted 2 years agoThis show was pitched as a murder mystery with some political intrigue but all of that is abandoned after the first episode for a pretty basic romance story with some light comedy and occasional action. It wasn't the worst but I feel like it really squandered its setting.

Golden Wind
Posted 2 years agoI can see why this was such a contentious JoJo's part. Giorno Giovanna's power is so weird and nonsensical that they pushed him to minor character status until the end and let Bucciarati be the protagonist of this series. Additionally a large portion of the series returns to the Stardust Crusaders format of "we need to get somewhere but there are hired killers waiting for us around every corner." Also the ending features an entire section that goes out of its way to explain something which had been previously explained but somehow makes it make less sense.
That said I enjoyed it. It's near the bottom of my JoJo's list but it was alright.
