Posted 12 years agoI returned from Alaska over the weekend, so now I'm settling in and getting ready for RainFurrest.
Things I discovered on the trip:
1. A 15-hour day of driving isn't too bad if you start at 2AM
2. Every restaurant in Canada has eggs Benedict on the breakfast menu
3. Speed limits in Canada are suggestions. Polite suggestions, of course (it is Canada after all), but suggestions nonetheless.

Posted 12 years agoI'm scheduled to leave Wrangell on Friday, August 23rd. After driving the 1,000 miles home from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and stopping to visit my parents, I should be home on Monday the 2nd. Just in time to get into pre-con mode before RainFurrest! ^^
The End Is Near...I Think
Posted 12 years agoThe project in Wrangell, Alaska is approaching completion. As far as I know there isn't another site I'll need to go to, so all indications are that I can come home as soon as the project is complete. The best guess is that I'll be back around the weekend of August 24/25. That means that I'll be able to attend the last few staff meetings before RF, and I can enjoy the last bit of summer in Seattle. Both are good things. ^^

BLFC Report
Posted 12 years agoIt's been a busy week since returning home from Biggest Little Fur Con 2013. I finally have time to write a proper report.
Thursday: Drive from Beatty, Nevada, where I'd spent the night en route from Phoenix, to Reno. My cub and roommate babyfox1800's flight had just arrived, so we checked in. We were on the 8th floor of the Grand Sierra Resort. The room was large but dated. I learned later that the rooms on the 20th floor, called "mini-suites," were simply renovated rooms. I liked the $69 rate enough to live with a 1980s-vintage room.
Friday: I got my first look at the con space during opening ceremonies, and it was amazing. Aside from two panel rooms, the con space was one big, open room. It was easy to find people, because anyone doing anything with the con was going to be in that one room. I went go-kart racing in suit for the first time. Sadly the carts aren't very powerful, but they're still fast enough to have fun, especially for $5.50 per race. I hope I can find a picture of me in suit in a go-kart.
I put together a group to go the Nugget casino in downtown Reno. Their coffee shop has the Awful-Awful burger, so named because it's "awful big and awful good." babyfox1800,

demuto agreed that the Awful-Awful was worth the trip.
I like to gamble, and I spent much of my non-con time in the casino. In the wee hours of Friday night, I won $1,600 playing nickel keno. That doesn't happen often, but it's nice when it does.
Saturday: I didn't do much except participate in the fursuit parade and eat. Breakfast at the buffet, and dinner at Rim, the Asian restaurant in the Grand Sierra Resort. The all-you-can-eat sushi is a great deal at $26. Ordering off the menu will quickly exceed that price. The catch is that all-you-can-eat seating is limited, so unless you get there at opening, you likely won't be able to get in.
Sunday: I spent much of the day gambling, in the process moving up two levels in the player's club. One perk of the current level is reserved parking nearer to the building. It occurred to me that I've been playing at the Eldorado in downtown Reno for 23 years, and I still don't have preferential parking. I'm liking the Grand Sierra Resort more and more.
The feedback session after the closing ceremonies was helpful. I didn't hear anyone say that had a bad time at BLFC, which is unusual. Usually someone is butthurt enough about something to complain. I liked some of the little touches such as cold towels in the headless lounge.
Monday: babyfox1800 and I spent 13 hours driving home to Seattle. I thought about the con much of the time, and I definitely want to go back. BLFC hit a home run, and I'm looking forward to it again next year, along with what will likely be a much larger crowd once word gets out how smoothly it went this year.

BLFC Preview

djarums for the brunch buffet at the Grand Sierra Resort, the venue for the upcoming Biggest Little Fur Con. We agreed that it will be amusing to watch crowds of champion-eater furs in the buffet. ^^
Afterwards we walked around the GSR, and I have to say it's an incredible venue for a con. The GSR has lots of elevators, 11 restaurants including the buffet and the 24-hour coffee shop, a candy store, a toy store, bowling alley, and movie theater. The con space itself is contiguous, so everything is in one place, and the corridors are wide. There appears to be a ton of hangout space as a result.
I'm looking forward to BLFC. See you all there!

No FWA After All
Posted 12 years agoIt's theoretically possible to go to FWA, but I just can't justify the time or expense. Instead I'll head home, stopping in Las Vegas (because it's Vegas!) and Reno, to check out the Grand Sierra Resort, the venue for Biggest Little Fur Con.
