I've decided that another method of practicing I'd like to use is doing digital portraits from photographs of people. I feel like doing this often will give me a better handle on how to render more realistic shading using my digital medium. It was clear from today's session, after comparing my initial sketch to the reference photo, that my sketched pose was much much too stiff. This was probably a result of doing straight up contours instead of starting with a gesture. It was also a good chance for me to use some different layer modes I've been trying out. I know this attempt wasn't the greatest, but it was better than my first and I know I'll get much better if I keep at it!
Art tip
Learn the names of muscles! It's really helpful when communicating to other artists that you're able to identify body parts by name. You don't need to learn every underlying muscle and its innervations. In fact, a lot of the muscles you deal with in art are the same ones that appear frequently in gym workout-talk. So at least learn the layman's terms for major muscles that are apparent when drawing anatomy. Here's a short list of some important ones you should have handy if you don't already
Trapezius (Traps)
Latissimus dorsi (Lats)
Deltoid
sternocleidomastoid (Sternomastoid)
Biceps, triceps, quadriceps (quads)
Gastrocnemius (calf muscle)
Pectoralis major (Pecs)
Serratus anterior
Illiac crest (hip bone, not a muscle but watevs)
Personal life
Commissions have been relatively slow lately so I'm gonna have to find a way to drum up some more business! In the mean time I applied to a medical scribe job at a nearby hospital with the help of
feun so wish me luck! Oh! and I got Overwatch for the PC. Been having fun with that~

I had an epiphany that I rely pretty much entirely on shadow when it comes to using value to create the forms of a figure, and that when it comes to light I usually just gently sprinkle it in broad areas. Realistically, I should also be using lightened areas to help define a shape, not just shadow. I realized that there was a big mistake in my practice routine. As part of my warm up I usually do a life drawing session using Pixel Lovely (really useful site btw). Well, I was using just a regular scrap sketchbook to do these sketches, and since the pages are default white I've just been worrying about the shading in the figure and not actively adding in lighting. Luckily I had a toned sketchbook in the wings which means when I'm drawing the longer poses, the figures are already mid-toned, so I've got to pay attention to both the shadow and light. (If you guys wanna practice with a mid-toned figure too but don't have a toned sketchbook, you can always color a page beforehand using graphite or charcoal. But be warned, it's a little messy)
Art tip
If you're trying to draw something at a more dynamic angle, it sometimes helps to draw the figure inside of a box that is receding away from the viewer and is expanded further towards the viewer. This will help establish the perspective in your head. Here's a good example of what I'm talking about, though I usually use it when one part of the figure is particularly close to the viewer.
Personal life
So I saw Suicide Squad and I gotta say it was... underwhelming? I haven't read or watched other SS stuff and I hadn't seen the other DC abominations so I was going in with relatively neutral expectations. No spoilers, but it was pretty much Harley Quinn Squad also featuring Will Smith. It seemed like the movie was bogged down with poor writing that underdeveloped some characters to the point that they seemed completely accessory to the story and also poor cutting choices. I'm no movie critic though and I shouldn't be hitting the theater too much as I probably won't be able to keep my bank account up much longer on art alone. Time to do something with this bio degree! >:3

Posted 9 years agoSo I'm doin the thing! Imma try to do this once a week, and this is the basic format it'll follow. I sectioned it off so you can just read whatever you want. Comments are helpful as they're the only way I know people read any of this, nothing profound necessary.
Personal art journey
Past few weeks I've been trying to take my time and study human anatomy in terms of art from top to bottom. Right now I'm at the deltoid/trapezius. One of the hardest things I find though is not using or over-accentuating a muscle after studying it. Especially with more traditionally feminine or lithe features (and depending on style), it's actually proper to smooth out some muscles to non existence as definition is softened by fat. I'm gonna keep working at it though and try to keep in mind that the knowledge of how to draw those muscles have their place.
Art tip
When it comes to drawing hands, it sometimes helps to first draw the hand where you want it, then figure out how the arms are going to connect to it. It's pretty helpful when you already have a clear idea for a pose down because most of the poses you think of should probably be physically possible. Just watch out for the tilt/rotation of the hand as what you may have in mind for a pretty spot for the hand may not be the most natural position, so always double check by taking on the pose yourself.
Personal life
Since it's summer and my usual day jobs of tutoring are out, money is pretty tight. Luckily as some of you know I sometimes assist in running an anime/Renaissance accessory booth at conventions and festivals in the tri-state area. So yesterday I was running the stand in the Detroit Eastern Market for a mini Renaissance thing. It was neat, even got a tip for being "beautiful"...alright owo;;;; But there was also a little 13y.o. girl going around for hours looking for work or change from people so she could afford a dress. She was only $7 short at one point so I gave it to her and she came back to show it off. She looked really pretty in it, so it made me happy ^-^

How would you guys feel about
Posted 9 years agoHow'd you feel about me updating journals more often with art stuff every so often?
I usually don't post journals because 1. I'm not very motivated on life updates and 2. I don't feel like anyone really reads journals
But I'd like to have a better connection with my regular followers
I can talk about kinks I find in my own art (which is probably good for me to improve) and other miscellaneous art tips that might help you guys
What do you think?

To pregnancy and mpreg commissioners!
Posted 10 years agoFor the time being I am no longer accepting commissions with a pregnancy/mpreg theme
The volume of requests for that theme has been drowning out most anything else and is steering my art in a direction I don't want to go
I will:
- Follow through with preg commissions that I've already agreed to
- Finish this mpreg series at my digression
- Post some of the backlog of preg pictures here and there
I've got nothing against the preg community, the only change is a needed break from producing art of it
I'll probably accept preg themed commissions again in the future with a little more of a controlled flow
For now, I'm still open to other themes
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns~

TMI Tuesday, along with actual information
Posted 10 years agoHey guys, sorry the art has been getting slow lately
I had no time to work on stuff with school and work starting up
HOWEVER my schedule is all figured out now with a good amount of time for drawing and streams ^-^
I even got a new drawing laptop so no more sudden computer resets in the middle of streams
I'm having some troubles with getting drivers and programs to work on it right now, but as soon as that's figured out it'll be back to work!
