So. After a lot of thought, I've decided to let Ciara and Niamh play around with other girls on a limited basis. They're still a couple, and they're still quite loyal to each other, and that's never going to change. But, based partly on the fact that they've both been drawn with other girls in the past, I think I'm comfortable with giving them a somewhat more open relationship, at least outside of the novels.

This doesn't mean I'm willing to let them bed down with anyone who asks, though. I'm going to be pretty picky about who they sleep with. They're still my babies and, for the most part I'd prefer for their encounters to be a bit more meaningful than just sex. There's no guarantee it'll last, either. For now, though, we'll see how it goes.

Just got back from the hospital this evening. As it turns out, she's got some hairline fractures in her sacrum, which the doctor says have been there "for a while", as well as some swelling of the bone. Which I didn't even know was possible! The fractures are apparently the result of, basically, osteoporosis, and the physical therapy she was doing for her hip surgery aggravated the situation. So it's nothing life threatening or anything like that, but it's most likely going to take a very long time to heal and if things don't go smoothly she may face another surgery.

On the bright side, the physician who is taking care of her is the same one who did her hip surgery, and he's damned good. It's a relief to know just what's going on, too.

As those who have followed me for a while know, I don't normally talk much about family issues, but I just didn't want those who are close to me to have to worry too much. I'm going to be spending a good chunk of my time at the hospital, once again, and they're going to send her to a rehab hospital after she's done at the regular one, so I might not be around much for some time to come, depending on how things go. But things are a little better than I'd feared at first.

Mom went back to the hospital this morning because she's been in a lot of pain for the last four days, to the point where she can't sit or stand and even lying down hurts her. We don't know much yet, except that it may be related to her Parkinson's, but they may re-admit her for a few days. So please excuse me if I'm not at my best at the moment.

If Fiachra were bisexual, how much worse the boy would be?

I have to admit I'm sometimes tempted to go with it anyway, just to mess with everyone.

Also, it's mildly amusing that, with all the terribly explicit pictures of him I have, people still mistake him for a girl when he does put his clothes on. He is awfully pretty, though, I'll grant you that.

My latest picture of Megan netted me no less than thirteen new watchers, and I've been gaining a small but steady stream of new watches all year. I haven't begun to have the time to thank everyone individually, so thank you all! What's more, I'm a bare handful of watches away from 1,000, and that just blows my mind! If it keeps up like this, I'm going to have to try to think of something special to do to celebrate.

Slipped and put my right hand through a window, which did a pretty good job of slicing up a couple of my fingers. It's nothing that some disinfectant and a few bandages can't heal, but typing kinda hurts right now, so please excuse me if I stay quiet a bit longer than planned.

I guess I had to prove I'm okay with drawing blood from myself, too!

It is now legal for me to strap a rubber band around someone's arm, jab them with a sharp piece of metal and pour their blood into little test tubes. Doesn't that sound like fun?

Today was the day I was scheduled to take my phlebotomy certification test. I went in feeling massively unprepared, and things only got worse when the test started. Out of 80 questions, at least a third of them were over things that neither my course work nor my texts had even covered. Questions about things like the proper transportation of semen samples, for example, when even the lab where I did my clinicals only ever handled blood and urine. Or questions about specific tests dealing with pregnancy and neonatal issues. Important stuff, to be sure, but all I was ever trained to do was stick a needle in a vein and how to help patients who vomited or passed out during the procedure. (You guys totally wanna know this stuff, right?)

Cue total panic, barely suppressed.

I did the best I could, though, and the computer gave me back a preliminary status of "Passed". I have to wait until I get my written scores to know for certain, but it's just possible I might finally get my certification, after all these months of fighting with bureaucrats and red tape. I'm kind of excited.

But I have the most wonderful boyfriend anyone could ever hope for, hands down. I don't say that nearly enough, but it's true.

Due to serious drought conditions here, the fireworks display has been cancelled. Which is just as well, really, as I'd rather not see my town go up in flames, but it's kind of a pity, too, as the display has always been one of the high points of summer. Especially since the park where they hold it is close enough to my house that I can sit in my front yard and watch it without having to pay one red cent. Because I'm cheap like that.

So here's wishing my fellow Americans a happy 4th, and go enjoy some fireworks for me.

Now the only question is whether my brother and sister-in-law will let someone like me anywhere near the kid once they're born. I guess time will tell.

Thanks to everyone who left words of support on my last journal. Mom's surgery was a great success and she came home this afternoon, which was a great relief for all of us. Now she just has to get through the physical therapy and all the various pills and potions that she has to take, or have injected, for the next little while.

Needless to say, I'm exhausted, so it's probably going to be a day or two before I'm back to normal on here. But thanks to everyone for being patient with me.

Just a heads up, here. My mother is going in for hip replacement surgery this Thursday and after that she'll spend a few days in the hospital to recover. Then, she may need someone to be with her twenty-four hours a day for a time, while she goes through physical therapy and all that jazz. All this means that from now 'til I'm not sure when I'll probably be a bit hard to get hold of. I bring this up not to ask for sympathy. This whole thing is very much a step forward for her, and I'm fairly confident things will go smoothly. I simply don't want to worry people by vanishing on them.

I finally went to see it this evening.

I won't spoil anything for anyone who might still be waiting to see it, or at least I'll try not to, but I'm going to go against what seems to be the popular opinion and say that I actually enjoyed it. It wasn't quite what I expected, but I think that's really for the best. Xenomorphs will always be cool in my book, but there's not really much more anyone can do with them at this point. I guess my biggest complaint is that they seem to be on some shaky ground where science and genetics are concerned but it's not like the whole xenomorph life cycle makes that much sense, biologically, when you stop to think about it.

I find it mildly amusing that the heroine's name is Dr. Elizabeth Shaw. I suppose it's probably too much to hope that it's an homage of sorts, as the original Liz Shaw certainly tangled with enough alien species and threats to humanity in her own time. But I just kept looking for the time machine.

I think I can kind of see why people don't care for this film. It's rather slow and artsy, especially at the beginning, and it breaks sharply away from the action-adventure flavor of the later Alien films. But I thought that was a point in its favor.

Whatever you think of it, at least it's not Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. My inner historian wanted to puke after seeing that preview.

Just heard the news. Bradbury has been one of my literary heroes since I was a child. It was thanks to his work that I fell in love with books as much as I did, and I don't think it's going too far to say that he was one of the greatest authors of both the 20th and the 21st Centuries.

His books will live on.
