Posted 16 years agoIt's kind of sad that people, icons even...that I grew up with are dying.
I've been starting to feel my age lately and current events only add to it. It's not like M.J. was old, either...but considering the amount of stress he has been under recently and in the past, I guess it's not all that surprising.
Harry Kalas, who's best known as the voice of the Phillies, was another recent death that hit kind of hard. The Phillies hadn't won a World Series since the year I was born, but after years of hearing him call plays, to finally hear him announce the Phillies as World Champions was a great moment...and at the very least I take some comfort in knowing that he saw "his" team reach the top before he passed on.
I was at Otakon when I got news about Bernie Mac's death, and while I wasn't a huge fan of the man I did enjoy his comedy and occasionally watched his sitcom...it seemed somewhat surreal.
I really didn't know who Heath Ledger was until I heard he had been cast as the Joker, and didn't care much to find out until after he died.
The state of the world being what it is, with the economy and now North Korea promising Judgement Day, I guess facing your own mortality is something everyone will have to go through.

small update
Posted 16 years agoMove's gone well, but my room needs some sorting out. But it's mine and I do have roof access, so it'll only get better. I have posters up, and once I get a new shelf I'll have my console collection up as well (3 NES's and none of them seem to work :<)
Otherwise, working as usual and helping around the new house getting everyone settled in.
I'll be back online regularly next week sometime...we have internet, but my comp needs to be unpacked and then set up. Hope you all have been well.

So it begins
Posted 16 years agoWe've signed the lease and paid our first month's rent. In about 2 weeks the house renovation should be finished and we can move in. So, my friends, brother, and I are pretty much housemates. As it stands, we have no furniture, nothing to put in the house...but it's more or less ours.
I FINALLY GET MY OWN ROOM.
AND I CAN WALK OUT ON THE ROOF.
Gonna be breaking things down and packing, and although we're not sure about the internet situation I still have my laptop with an aircard, but we'll all still be working and such.
Having several strong opponents so close is gonna be fuckin sweet. But what I'm looking forward to most of all is some peace. Hopefully. <_<
Gonna be moving to a new account, too, and working on a new main character. Might as well go all out.

SFIV Tournament Round 1 - Victory!
Posted 16 years agoWas up until about 4 am this morning, nervous as fuck. c_c;
So, I finally win a tournament, but it's only the first step. :p Gief took it all the way, though. YEAR.
Lots of shoto-scrubs, a few Sagats, and one damn good Claw (the guy who came closest to beating me).
What pissed me off was that some 30 people or so signed up but a good portion no-showed. NOT FOR ME. Everyone in my brackets showed up: I was the only one who had to fight every round (meaning I had to beat 6 people, and defended my "Championship" afterward). The other finalists got at least 2 byes. >:( 3 of the people who knew me best were among the challengers I had to face, too.
I was thrown off by the stipulations of no-unlockables (no Gen for me) and Default controls, but got lucky on every misfire. Next round I can't be so sloppy.
So, I got a nice yellow Ryu headband ("Street Fighter IV, U.S. National Championship: Store Champion"), wristband, and certifcate/entry proof. Next week I compete for the District Championship in Round 2.
I also seemed to have been given the name "Arcade" by the GameStop staff. Har.
Now I just gotta get next Saturday off.

So...new Street Fighter (360 ver)
Posted 16 years agoBastards shoulda packed in that Ryu headband, almost missed it.
Anyways, spent a few hours unlocking all the characters (except Seth cuz...ugh). So, here's what I think so far.
:Pros:
Gorgeous visuals - Nice to see next-gen being used for something other than "gunmetal gray and dogshit brown." Some of the stages, especially Volcanic Rim, are awesome to look at. There's a great degree of interaction with people, animals, and objects in the background, as well. People getting knocked over during Supers and such. Little details like each character's breath showing in the Russian stage and the OHSHIT-face everyone makes when the other guy activates their Ultra. Especially after playing HD Remix, the fluidity of motion is very eye-catching. Even everyone's idle stance is something to watch.
Soundtrack - Reminiscent of 3rd Strike, the soundtrack is very upbeat and action-inspired. Although a good deal of it is (yet again) remixed SF2 tracks, it's still very well done and the new tracks fit well too.
Updates - Seeing Gief in Haggar's pants. LOL. More colors and costumes are a nice touch, because let's face it: while the SF2 cast are iconic, it wouldn't to see them in attire aside from the stuff they've been wearing since what? '91? Hoping new characters come down the line.
Training Mode -
Once again earning my title of EX4, the training mode includes a Trial Mode that was originally featured in the EX series. It runs you through a character's special normals, specials, supers, basic combos, and some advanced combos. So if you don't know a character at all you can get some foothold. Wanna brush up on your crouching MK->Hadouken? Got that. Wanna try a Focus Attack->forward+HP->crouching HP->Hadouken->Shinku Hadouken? Awesome. Wanna pick a random character and just beat on Viper for being a waste of space when Elena was a perfectly good candidate for the game? FUCK YEAH
:Mehs:
Voice Acting - While a few chars' US voices were done well (Gief, Claw, Gen, Cammy come to mind), a good portion of them well...you've probably seen The Dark Knight. Which means you've likely seen this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2yv8aT0UFc Akuma sounds like that Batman. I wish I was fucking kidding. It's weird hearing Teen Gohan as Ryu and Dante as Ken, but not bad. In general, it's like your favorite anime got dubbed: hits and misses. While you do have the option to select the original JP voices, there is an unlockable option that lets you select the language of each individual character. Nice touch. There is a subtitle option, but it doesn't come into play during actual fighting.
Storyline - Being an interquel, I didn't expect much, but every character has an animated intro and ending. During the Rival Fight, the characters actually continue talking while fighting, so it has a more cinematic feel to it. It's as good as you an expect from a fighting game storyline even if the originality is lacking. Where this lets down though is the ZOMG SEQUEL aspect that every ending has. There is no closure. At all. It's not even a case of "Oh, this gets resolved in SF3" since a few characters should be dead (Gen, Gouken) or much older (Sakura) for this game. Capcom stands ready to re-milk this franchise and every ending is virtually inundated with their salivation. "Want to know what happens next? Buy SFIV: Second Advent!" You remember how the ending of the second Matrix movie left a bad taste in your mouth? It's like that. Except is has more to do with the movie itself than Keanu, who is being played by a fat guy wearing clothing that's much too tight, but whose lines are written and delivered with the same amount of finesse. Speaking of which....
:Cons:
Roster - All the new characters suck. They play all right, yes...but as characters, they all suck. None of them have any real motivation or depth, while Viper (secret agent...oh so mysterious!) and Abel (amnesiac warrior...oh so mysterious!)in particular are horribly clichéd. If they were gonna basically make this game yet another upgrade of SF2 they might as well have put DeeJay and T.Hawk in. The lack of SF3 characters is in utter abomination as well. Yun and Yang are even in Chun-Li's intro, and Seth has a few of Gill/Urien's moves. Hell, the game control scheme is based on SF3, not 2. So why the big fuck you to the cast? ELENA IS SUPERIOR. Also Dudley >> Balrog.
Controls - Having played the arcade version I can tell a few things off here. 360s and even 720s are easier to pull off even with the 360 controller, but the bigger issue I have is the game's seeming inability to decipher the execution of an EX move (single motion + 2 buttons) from an Ultra (double motion + 3 buttons). If I had EX stocks while trying to do Ultras I'd burn them all before the Ultra finally fired, which sucks cuz the EXs carry over rounds but Ultras don't. Another problem is chaining Supers often results in other moves firing (like an Uppercut). That one is probably more the controller than the game, though.
Ultras - I've touched on this before but it bears repeating. The concept of rewarding a player with a powerful move for getting their ass beat is absurd. While the idea of a Desperation attack certainly isn't anything new to fighting games, it's something that seems to be popping up in lot of multiplayer games lately.
Interface - Once again, this seems to be Capcom's way of punishing those without HDTV, as a lot of menus have text that's FUCKING impossible to read.
Seth - While Gill is still far and away the worst example of a final boss in gaming history for not only being ridiculously overpowered but flat-out cheating (your health goes to zero YOU LOSE: every fighting game follows this basic rule), Seth comes pretty close as he's massive imbalanced. Gill could not use EX moves. Gill could not teleport. Gill did not have a 360 grab. Gill could not throw Sonic Booms. Gill did not throw 2 Sonic Booms, teleport behind you INTO an EX 360. Gill did not have the Shoryuken/Gene Splice. Gill at least had underwear on. Seth looks like he was a failed attempt at recreating the final boss from World Heroes 2. If Bison isn't even going to be the last boss, make it Akuma. Or even Gouken! Shit. He's actually unlockable, which means having to deal with fags spamming him for wins like with Gill in 3rd Strike.
Overall, not a bad game. Obviously, this will be the go-to game for competition for a while since TvC is never gonna be ported. So if you're into fighting pick it up. If you're into Street Fighter it's also worth picking up. I have the Special Edition, but I've yet to watch Ties That Bind. Maybe a review on that tomorrow.
I've not played anyone online except
s0an but it's not difficult to set up matches. Looking forward to playing other people (especially since my man Gen is back).

Watch drops?
Posted 16 years agoSo is anyone else finding artists randomly dropping from their watchlists?
I know I watch a lot of people, but I know who I've +watch'd and found it odd seeing new pics that didn't show up in my inbox only to find out I wasn't watching them.

Good birthday.
Posted 17 years agoFA Update and WoW stuffs
Posted 17 years agoGotta say I'm impressed with the new layout. A search engine on the way too? Even better. While I'm glad to see progress on this site I'm still hoping it doesn't end up the way Sheezy eventually did (although I did like being able to customize colors).
I started a Night Elf character (also named Vermilion hurr) on the Saurfang server, apparently the day before servers go offline for maintenance. XD Sucky. It's a 14-day trial so I don't know how far I'm gonna go.
Also doing WiiFit, which is a lot of fun. The female trainer has a nice ass c_c Although the ventriloquism thing coupled with the way the Balance Board moans when stood upon sometimes is a bit disturbing. Currently I'm looking for some weights to add more to the training. Doing push-ups on the BB hurts the wrists like hell, though it could just be me getting old.

Posted 17 years agoRunning around with my nephew at the mall I found 14-day trials of World of Warcraft for like, $2. A couple of co-workers play the game and I know a whole bunch of you do. :p

1) What was your FIRST video game console?
Commodore 64
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, River Raid, Galaxia, Gauntlet, Spy vs. Spy II/III, Lode Runner
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
NES(x2), N64, Wii, Genesis/32X, Saturn, Dreamcast(x2), PS2, Xbox, Xbox360
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
Pretty obviously yes. I was always a hardcore fan of Ryu as I love competition and such, but in general I'm a big fan of all the characters except the SNK knockoffs being introduced in SFEX4.
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with kickass character designs?
They were an awesome company back when they put effort into everything. Now they just re-hash, re-make, re-release all their old standbys. They couldn't even make SF2 one more time without having other people handle the programming, art, and music. Don't get me started on the Okami thing, either.
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
I would say "you'd better wash your hands because when I beat you that won't be an excuse." :p
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?
I would say Zelda but that's more of an adventure, in the next case it would definitely be Xenogears.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
As I'm a big fan of animation I favor 2D (*koffCapcomsuckshack*) but I can accept 3D when it's done right. The new TMNT movie was pretty damn good, for instance.
9) Are you an SNK fan?
I find it funny that this question is SNK-related and the question number is repeated, much like the series itself. ;p
9) Are you good at DDR?
Adequate.
10) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
I played the arcade version for the sole purpose of shooting him.
11) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
Aside from high school as a whole, I would say no.
12) Do you listen to video game music?
I'd say 85% of all my music is game related.
13) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
My skin color doesn't allow me much choice in the matter. :p
14) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
Funny thing is, in the arcade used to work in...I was the one who trained those kids. XD They got good enough to beat me within a month or two. They've grown up now and don't play games so much, though.
15) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
I hate re-makes, really...it's such a cheap excuse to make money.
16) Mario or Sonic?
Why do I have to choose? Mario is the man when it came to games, but Sonic brought in the attitude.
17) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
Movie-based games and game0based movies are never good.
18) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
I would have to say sports but that's mostly because of the bullshitty copyright issues and EA raping the genre with new games where simple patches would suffice.
19) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
I'll agree with Lance on BAT...that's definitely a series that's ripe for a comeback. Soul Calibur has obviously lost its touch if it needs to bank on Star Wars fans.
I also really liked Magical Starsign for the DS. Given how many anthro characters are in the game I'm VERY surprised it was so low-key.
20) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
Almost every game I play, but mostly Gill in SF3 because he's so ridiculously broken.
21) Do you own any VG apparel?
I have a Zelda shirt and a pair of 8-bit heroes Tees I got from
shin0r0z
22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
Horrible movie, but back then I didn't care because really, how many game-based movies were there at the time?
23) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
Fucking terrible and a damn shame it had to be Raul Julia's last movie, and the worst part is it looks like the nightmare will repeat itself with the new one.
24) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
There's a difference?
25) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
Yes, because games as a whole suck pretty hard now.
26) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
Yes, I've lent games out that never came back, like my original copy of MvC2 for the DC. >_<
27) Do you own any imported games?
PS1: DB Final Bout, Saturn: DBZ Legends, X-men/Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Vampire Saviour
28) Are you ready for this meme to be over, or could you keep going?
AERIAL RAVE
29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where? This can be simple or elaborate.
I'm eventually going to get a Triforce on the back of my left hand and probably the TEN symbol on my back.
30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
Ninja Gaiden 1. Although it could more because the game was FUCKING HARD AS BALLS, beating the final boss only to have your character's father die in your arms was a bit moving.
SorcererLance1) What was your FIRST video game console?

I have a Zelda shirt and a pair of 8-bit heroes Tees I got from
shin0r0z22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
In what way do you feel the most

Deep: I seem to be able to make friends with anyone.
Shallow: I'd like a pretty girlfriend if I ever get one.
Right: I try to take care of everyone before myself.
Wrong: I feel like a martyr sometimes which is pretty arrogant.
Loved: When my nephew wants me to pick him up cuz he's tired or upset.
Loving: Ditto.
Weak: When I have to deal with other people.
Strong: When I'm not alone.
Scared: When I think about the future.
Excited: When I improve my skills...fighting, drawing, what have you.
Smart: When I put on my Clark Kent glasses every morning.
Dumb: When I realize I'm nowhere near as intelligent...or good looking.
Inspired: Listening to good music....like something orchestral, choir, or both.
Inspiring: When people crowd around me while I fight.
Like a child: Everyday I stay here.
Like an old person: Watching the degradation of video games and cartoons.
Like an animal: When I'm in control.
Like a dork: When I lose control.
Like a hero: When I make my nephew smile or laugh when he'd just been crying.
Like a jerk: When I make him cry.
