New Year's and such
Posted 13 years agoI spent my new year in bed ... trying to sleep. My job had decided that it was a good idea to have me work eleven hours starting at 6 AM on the first of the year. This of course led to me not getting any sleep due to the fact that everyone else was out having a ball and screaming their heads off. The next day I made up for it by sleeping thirteen hours so that was something.
I also saw The Hobbit and I thought it was a fast three hours. It was fun though I wouldn't give Radagast a hug anytime soon. Top notch special effects, and what not and a lot of solid performances. I'm glad they backed away from a couple of the elements of the book like, the eagles and the wargs talking.
I had a few minor quibbles but nothing to ruin the movie. I suppose the largest of them would be that some of the dwarves were entirely to pretty. I found this to be especially true for Thorin who, for someone who has been through all the things he's been through should look a bit more gruff, a bit older, a bit more like he wasn't in the, "I'm in the running to be a stumpy more serious Aragorn contest." I might also have liked to have had a bit more blood as well, those swords were awful clean.
All in all though I enjoyed the movie, and for those who like this type of movie they will probably like it too. I saw it in 2D and I can't imagine 3D would actually add anything to the experience.
Finally a silly video I got from typing in random words on youtube. Frankly I thought it was silly.

So Django Unchained is a ... family film?
Posted 13 years agoSo, I saw Django Unchained, the new Quinten Tarentino movie starring Jaime Foxx and Christophe Waltz as bounty hunters who kill criminals and are trying to get the freedom of Foxx's wife. Really everyone involved in this movie does a fantastic job. I didn't much care for the music in parts but, it's a Tarentino flick and truth be told his idea of how to score a movie has become muddled at best.
Apparently though unbeknownst to me, Django Unchained is a family movie. Apparently, it was meant for kids from ages two and up because they were ALL OVER MY THEATER. Apparently people getting shot, fountains of blood, horses being shot, someone getting torn apart by dogs along with all sorts of racial slurs and profanity is just FINE for kids!
Now aside from the fact that they'd whine and it can be irritating, this isn't a movie for them. It is irresponsible to bring small children into this kind of movie, not to mention the fact that it's irritating for the rest of us to have to listen to these so called adults try and shush their kids when things get to loud, intense, or scary for them. Then I have to get up let them out of the row because they have to leave the theater for two minutes only to come back in with the kid.
Here's a tip, if you as an adult want to see a movie that isn't appropriate for kids be it this, or Freddy vs. Jason, The Devil's Rejects, etc. leave them with a sitter. Rent the damn movie and watch it when the kids are in bed or over at a friend's house.
Do not bring them to this type of movie because at the end they're not happy because they had to sit through something that isn't appropriate for them, you're not happy because you have to either keep taking them out of the movie or shushing them and the rest of the audience isn't happy because we have to put up with your stupidity.

Back to work
Posted 13 years agoWell tomorrow I get to head back to work after my vacation. It was a productive vacation. Most of it was the following, getting over a cold, pressure washing the house in 40 degree weather, mailbox installation at my folks house, cleaning the inside of my house, watching Skyfall and Wreck-it Ralph and a number of other little projects that needed doing. Now it's back to selling food to people for Thanksgiving so that will be neat.

Election Day on Tuesday... still undecided?
Posted 13 years agoIf so I have a neat little website: http://www.politics1.com/p2012.htm
It lists the major party candidates, a slew of third party candidates. independent candidates and write-in candidates.
So if you don't know who to vote for this is a good site. If you DO know who to vote for but want to see what other candidates look like and their positions this is a good site. If you want to play the game where you look at the picture and try to figure out what the guy candidate is thinking it's a good site. Finally, if you want some absolute hilarity because some of these people are absolutely insane (We're talking the government implanted a radar in my tooth insane) this is ... the site for you.
Thank you.

Happy All Saints Day!
Posted 13 years agoHappy All Saints Day to everyone! I'm going to celebrate it much like I celebrated Halloween... by going to work! I guess that means the party from yesterday hasn't stopped yet! But for those who want something to giggle at to get them through the November grind well... this is all I've got right now.

Watching Movies
Posted 13 years agoIt's October and I'm watching horror and or sci-fi movies. Doing my part. Expanding my horizons. Wondering where in the hell some folks get the money at times. I mean I want to meet the people who gave money to Vampire Dentist or Thankskilling. They obviously have more of it than they need if THOSE are what they are investing in.
Thus far I've gone through the Halloween series, Friday the 13th series, The Thing (John Carpenter's partly because I don't have the 50s one and it was the only one I could stream), The Faculty, Dracula, Monster Squad (Albeit a comedy but Rudy is a bad ass), Alien, He Knows You're Alone, Evil Ed and Wolf. So many more to go. I even started to think, "Hey, I could do a list by what type of movie is my current favorite for each type." Then I thought, eh who'd read it? Then I thought I'm out of pickles and finally that's a big spider. Anyway... here are some movies I like and don't like currently broken down into groups.
Vampire:
Fave: Dracula
The classic tale of the classic vampire. While admittedly it's a bit stiff at times and from what I've seen the Spanish version is actually better directed, it's still a really well done film.
Honorable Mention: Interview with the Vampire
Great sets and some nice camera work and costuming. The acting was pretty good too. However, the movie is only really "alive" when Tom Cruise is around. Otherwise it tends to drag. It's not even my second favorite vampire movie but, it deserves a shout out.
Dislike: Vampire Dentist
Poor attempt at comedy made this a horror movie. The vampire's name is Vam Dent. The two regular dentists (I use that term loosely) are Doctors Moe Lars and Pierce Able respectively. Those names are as funny as it gets.
Werewolf:
Fave: Wolf
Jack Nicholson and Michell Pfeiffer do a great job with their characters and Mike Nichols directs, for me, a very interesting werewolf movie. James Spader plays the usual sleazeball.
Honorable Mention: American Werewolf in London
It has horror, gore, and quite a bit of humor. It also has the best transformation scene to date. This isn't my second favorite werewolf movie either due to some of the dream sequences being... pretty stupid.
Dislike: Werewolves on Wheels
Yes I know The Howling: New Moon Rising and Werewolf are both terrible. But at least with the first one you can watch how excited Pappy gets when he's about to deliver a line and then blow the delivery for some humor (not to mention the most evil line dancing I ever saw) and Werewolf had Joe Estevez and werewolf driving! Werewolves on Wheels is about a biker gang that meets up with a satanic cult someone (or two) gets turned into werewolves. They beat up the cult once and ride off. A biker gets killed by the beast(s) they bury him. They ride. They stop for the night. Build a fire. someone gets killed by the werewolf. they bury him. They ride. They stop for the night... you get the idea.
Zombie
Fave: Dawn of the Dead (either version) I just like this movie. Both have good gore effects and the acting frankly is better than I'd expect in either case. the opening's of both are great in their own ways and whether the zombies are slow or fast it's still a bloody good time.
Honorable Mention (gonna pick two): "White Zombie" and "Sugar Hill."
White Zombie is the story of a man who turns to a witch doctor played by Bela Lugosi to try to get a girl to not fall for another man. Instead he turns her into a zombie slave and the man has to try to break the curse. It's a lot of fun and has a type of zombie that isn't seen very often anymore. Lugosi is the man. Sugar Hill is about a woman whose man is killed by some bad dudes and she sells her soul to Baron Samedi to get an army of zombies to get revenge on those who did it. Blaxploitation fun and crazy 70s costumes.
Dislike: Land of the Dead
So damn boring with way to many not to subtle socio-political messages in it. I get it Romero but, when I watch one of your movies I wanna see people eaten to death. Not be bored to death with a half assed story and not one ounce of good gore. On the limited plus side, Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo did make me smile briefly. Just not often enough.
Slasher Film:
Fave: Halloween (original version)
In my opinion it's Carpenter's most complete film. The characters are likable, the acting is likable and unlike the remake it doesn't piss me off.
Honorable Mention: Friday the 13th part 6: Jason Lives
Thom Matthews beginning dialog is stiff but, I just like this movie. It's a movie that has a little fun with itself and its characters. Nobody in it is really completely unlikeable (unlike Jason Takes Manhattan). All in all while maybe not as good technically as say the first two. I still have a ton of fun with this one.
Dislike: Sleepaway Camp
I guessed the ending a mile away. This movie is just mostly boring. The characters are pretty much all mean spirited, pedophiles or both and while they mostly get what they deserve none of it feels satisfying or believable. . I do suppose I could give it credit for honestly being a closeted gay slasher film (the dad is guy, a bunch of the teenage boys want to go skinny dipping at night but the girls don't want to go so ... they all go anyway, and so on) but I don't want to give it credit for that so there.
There are other things I could list but I'm tired. So, that's what I've got thus far.

Remember the Super Nintendo
Posted 13 years agoWell okay not everyone is as old as I am. I remember how when I was a kid I put it on layaway at K-Mart and did all sorts of jobs to earn the cash to get it. Sometimes I was cleaning up my grandparents' dog grooming store. Sometimes it was for chores around the house, sometimes it was for yard work in other folks yards or even making sure that other kids didn't mess up newly patched cement (three dollars for that).
When I got the SNES I played it fairly often. I still do and it's still fun.
So I found this video that honestly is pretty funny about how a group of parents back then were upset about the SNES. It's worth a look to see just what some folks will do and say (nothing vulgar but I did find myself repeating the line, "So.. slow news day?" a few times).

Things said on game shows
Posted 13 years agoWhere I work.
Posted 13 years agoI work in a grocery store. This particular grocery store is located off of a highway and sandwiched between three long term stay hotels. If I go down the road I can pass a trailer park. Copper wiring and pipe is stolen often especially from AC units around there and when the rent a room places change mattresses they are quite literally stained with every substance known to God and it happens at least monthly.
I have lots of addicts come in and people who might look normal if it weren't for unusually placed tattoos, several of whom appear to be baby's mommas. I've had people with burns over 60 percent of their body come in looking for... well a variety of things though usually it's a phone card. I routinely have people angry about flowers not opening up and a couple of times have heard the threat of violence uttered if someone didn't get the "FRESH" version of a product. This violence was typically either stabbing, shooting or the like. Two women came to blows over grapes.
This past week the demo display caught fire. Several manager's cars have been keyed. Car accidents happen more often than I should say. I was almost run off the road by a boat that was coming the opposite direction and watched a man on a motorcycle flip by me as he lost control going in a straight line on dry pavement.
On the plus side I like my coworkers in my department.
In any event, I'm tired. I need to write something again. Sleep first though.

And done with that
Posted 14 years agoWell that whole moving thing and setting up thing is pretty much done and done. Aside from a few issues with pipes and rugs and such I'd say it's pretty much go time. Now I just have to hope I get enough money overall rolling in to pay this thing off much faster than the bank would want. Heh good luck on that eh?
Anyway that's the summation. Now I'm sitting here looking at Chrono Trigger posters and thinking about how, if I hadn't bought this place I wouldn't have learned as much as I have (albeit not anything that would make me a pro at any of it). It's sort of weird but nice to be home,

Happy Birthday to me.
Posted 14 years agoAs Cracker said happy birthday to me and lo it is so that on this day the fifth of November I was cast upon this planet (much to its chagrin). Of course it being my birthday it can only mean one thing and that thing is work!
It's time for me to play with my house's wiring and get that taken care of! After that maybe some weird driving or something. We'll have to see what transpires.
And with that I'm off.

random
Posted 14 years agoI need a new camera. But that will have to wait until I actually have taken care of real things that require big bucks.
In other news I may need to get a hold of a lot of that syrup in the future and a lot of red food coloring. So much to do in so little time.

If you answer, cool, I'd appreciate putting me on the first place slot on a response journal (but not necessary), completing the list with 9 other people. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone.
(ALSO, YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY HAVE ART, DONE BY YOU) <---please note - I changed this last part to make it applicable to artists only and get them some free publicity.
(My twist on it IF YOU'RE A WRITER WRITING COUNTS THE SAME AS ART)

This was good fun
Posted 15 years agoThanksgiving, Unusual sports stories and more!
Posted 15 years agoFirst off I'd like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. If you are able to be with good friends, family and other loved ones then that is a truly wonderful thing. For those who are unable to do so I hope that you are able to find something good and have a wonderful time as well.
Sports
Football will be on tomorrow. None of which are the Blue Bombers or Eskimos but that's okay. We all understand. I mean granted the NFL isn't as interesting as Utah State football but, alas I shall endure.
Other stuff
This I suppose could go under sports but it has to do with art. Specifically Cub art and X rated Cub art at that.
Here's my take on it as some of you have found out:
The Chicago Cubs are one of the most futile teams in all of American sports. It has been well over one hundred years since their last World Series and frankly I'm sick of it. When former governors like Rod Blagojevich can sit in the stands with his Donald Trump looking hair... well that really says a lot about a team!
Frankly I find it unfortunate that depictions of Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Carlos Zambrano, and yes even Geovany Soto can be seen doing such things is a shame! A damn shame!
Listen guys... America likes winners and pizza and you're neither! So until further notice All you pitchers and catchers and those who like to play the field... No matter how many home runs or times you get to third base you have... until you start you start winning you can just stop tossing your balls all over the place and go home! You're banned along with any weird locker room stuff too! And anyone depicting anything you do especially on ESPN will mean trouble and more banning!
And if they don't think Banning doesn't ruin you ... just ask the Hartford Whalers or William Jennings Bryan!

Lost story
Posted 15 years agoI was going to post a newish story. It's gone though. I think it got eaten when the C drive went said, "Look what I can do," and died. So... I guess that means I should rewrite it at some point. Heck I could probably make it longer and better. It was one of the many that I wrote that never saw the light of day or weren't what the publisher was looking for.
I'll just have to go back through and try again. I'm also trying to write a story using someone else's characters again. I always found that to be fairly difficult because, I'd like to stay as true to the original owner's idea as to how they should behave and relate to one another while incorporating my own stuff as well. It's not impossible. But the results can vary widely depending on how much of a feel I get from the characters.
I really do hope that someday something I do will make its way to a publisher. Even if it doesn't sell so well at least it will be in print and I can point to it on a bargain rack and say, "See I'm published."
Ah the silly thoughts of a silly man.
