Posted 9 years agoToday, in our serie "what you like is kinda shit" : BLACK BUTLER (at least its first two chapters)
I've never had any interest in reading Black Butler, really, for the same reason I never had any interest in Sword Art Online for example : from afar it looks incredibly generic. But I've seen pretty pictures of it so I decided to give it a try, yaknow. Cos fukkit. I got nothing better to do except for all the better things I have to do. Like, yaknow, trying to actually draw comics instead of reading comics. I don't have the motivation for it right now, I need ENTERTAINMENT. So entertain me, Black Butler. Compel me, make me want to read you : what is it I'm supposed to want to see ?
NO CLUE. I have no idea. There are one dimensional characters doing stuff. Apparently that's supposed to hold my attention. I mean are you fucking serious what the fuck where's the FUCKING NARRATIVE HOOK.
Okay, LET'S COMPARE :
In Case Closed or Metantei Conan or whatever it's called (Detective Conan in France), the hero's abilety and personality are shown quickly : He's good at deduction ! He's rather athletic ! He's vain and likes the attention the previously cited quality bring him ! He's in love with a girl but doesn't have the courage to tell her ! She gives him shit for being vain and they go in a theme park. Sadly, MURDER HAPPENS (it's okay, he was a dick) (probably). Here's another chance to establish what the manga will be, fleshing out the tone, fleshing out the characters. The hero's inquisitive mind gets the better of him and after he solves the murder, he leaves his girl to follow two suspicious dudes that he noticed but they get a hold of him and prove his suspicion correct since they try to murder him with a new drug their organisation created. Except it doesn't kill him, it rejvenates him, he turns back into a kid ! And with this body he now has to track down the people that tried to kill him.
All of this is a single chapter.
Here's Black Butler's first two chapters :
The butler does things to accomodate his master's wishes, which are : "get ready for a guest", "gimme food", "teach me how to dance". Apparently the butler can do everything. The other servants beside the butler are only here to be worthless idiots and make the butler shinein comparison cos he fixes their messes. Also the master has a fiancée but he doesn't really seem to think of her as anything but an annoyance. And he makes toys or something.
... There's nothing there. That's about as accurate a plot synopsis I can give. Hell, I've bashed Tokyo Ghoul for being aimless but at least it had me intrigued for a while. But here there is NO intrigue in these first two chapters, there’s hardly a narrative thread connecting all of this together. A kid runs a manor with few servants, but out of all of them only the dashing butler is greatly talented, all the others are numbnuts. It sounds like a comedic setting, right ? But there's no real comedy beyond "oh look how clumsy they are, look how awesome the butler is at fixing all their mistakes, innit funny / interesting ?"
As a comedy, the jokes ALL fall flat. ALL OF THEM. It's just shitty humor like "oh no ! Someone fell !" or "ahah, look at that serious guy being annoyed by the silly hat he's forced to wear !" My god, the cringe is real. But it can get worse. Cos at least these jokes are easy to understand, not funny, but comprehensive.
Some of them I had to interpret myself to understand what the comedic factor was. A character praise the butler on his supposed intelligence, it cuts to a small picture of a study room which we only know is a study room cos it's written since the picture itself only shows a messy set of books. If the books were nicely organized but had spiderwebs and dust on them, i'd understand that the butler isn't as cultivated as it would seem. But having discarded books around means they've been used, at least once, sooooooo... Watdafuk am I supposed to understand. I'm not sure if it was a joke ! I'm not sure if it was just the comic agreeing with itself ! Either way it's so sloppy that it becomes worthless.
This is perfectly representative of the sort of things the first two chapters are full of. The fact that I don't laugh at the jokes is subjective, I mean they suck but I dunnow, some retarded four year old kid with a tumor out there might laugh (and hopefully die due to the shock the laughter inflicted on his body cos FUCK THAT KID IT'S NOT FUCKING FUNNY). Sucking on a technical level tho, that's less subjective. The art is not awful, it's just standard, it has that shojo-manga flair where it is obvious that the artist doesn't want to draw backgrounds and guess what : it leads to confusion when you're suddenly supposed to notice something in said background. It's also paced awkwardly, you jump from one character having an emotional moment (which is cheesier than my DICK by the way) to a character announcing her goal of comedically dressing up the very same guy having an emotional moment. All in one page, so that the transition from one element to the next is super jarring.
Imagine if in Disintegrity I had Larsen start weeping after he came and in the very same page Zee slapped him out of it (around page 95-100, don't remember exactly which). It wouldn't feel like it mattered at all, it wouldn't feel like Larsen was genuinely distressed. And even if it does turn into a joke, the punchline (or slapline really) being placed in a seperate page is there to slap the reader out of it as well. Some modicum of thoughts is required when organizing the pages and panels.
Let's compare some more ! In Case Closed, the first chapter soon starts presenting the character throught the use of journals and TV shows that the character pass by and gloats over because they praise him. So you get both an idea of his ability and his character in a single funny little scene.
In Black Butler, exposition comes up like a wild Pokemon. You're suddenly treated to a bubble that explains stuff. For no reason. It just appears. It's not necessarily relevant to the current scene, it doesn't mesh in any way with what happened before or after, it's just there cos the writers think you need to know but couldn't be arsed to weave the info into the action. "Oh by the way here's what the master's compagny does, keep that in mind cos it's probably going to matter eventually. Okay, now let's get back to the totally unrelated whatever that is going on."
What can I say. It's just badly writen. But if there's no real hook, the visuals are badly put together, the comedy fails, at least the characters must be interesting enough to carry it, right ?
AHAH YOU FUCKING FOOL of course not. There's nothing to them. The master is a stoic no-nonsense kid. The butler is perfect in every possible way. The fiancée is an ADHD ridden girly girl who likes cutesy stuff. Everyone else is basically Rob Schneider. In these first two chapters, that's all there is to them.
There is nothing to hold onto. It's fucking awful. Again, perhaps it gets better, perhaps the author(s) improve drastically as it goes on... I don't know. I don't care. Whatever, I was entertained ripping through this garbage, I suppose I should be glad I got that out of it at least.

So you browse around FA like a random wanker looking for a fix and you see a YCH. Hard to tell if it'd be good. Kinda too expensive for me anyway, but it's just curiosity that led me here so whatev's, man, whatev's. Still maybe the genuine art might be good since it looks like it's very inspired by Onta. And I like Onta's stuff. So why naht, yaknow, why naht, it's discovery time and stuff. Let's dive deep into the rabbit hole with our inquisitive penus.
Surprise ! It's crap. (I'd like to point out that it's actually only a surprise if you took it all figuratively, cos I'm sure you're bound to find crap in litteral rabbit holes. Then again I could have said that sarcastically, who knows.)
It's not the most awful things you'd ever see, it's just painfully average, the anatomy is wonky, the lighting doesn't give any bounce to the characters' shapes, the artstyle doesn't ooze with personality... It's just utterly flat. Mediocre.
"But it's just your personal subjective opinion that" - Shhhhhhhh. It's okay, it's okay. You're wrong. It's okay.
But gosh does it seems popular, around 700-1000 views per porn pic, plus faster and higher growth in terms of watchers ! Lotsa commissions in there too. Let's check the prices.

More than 80 for a single pinup, 40 more for each additional character, 20 more for background... for bland boring average porn that could not give me a woody even if it shove a tree up my ass...

This is just me being gratuitously mean instead of going to the artist and write constructive criticism. Cos fuggit yaknow ! People seem to like it, the artist gets money, everything's good. The price of art is determined by the artist trying to keep a stream of clients flowing regularly while taking in as much money as these clients are willing to give without drying up. So it's all good, right.
I watched too much GradeAUnderA and now I'm saying right all the time, right. Also I bet there are people who want to leave a shout on my page right now and are tired of this needlessly long journal to reach the shoutbox. Screw you I don't care.
Back on track, I ain't jealous. I'm not as greedy as I should be, I'm not making three hundreds differents prices for each possible variants of comishuns (because it's FUCKING ANNOYING), I'm not posting my art on enough websites to get famous and no one will do it for me (you're all lazy fucks), basically don't be like me cos I'm awful at being rich and famous.
But it made me ponder about the quality of my art. Not because I think it's bad, in fact I think it's quite alright ! I think it's gotten much better this past year, more details are to be found, linework is more consistent (but characters aren't SHHHH DON'T LISTEN TO THAT), shading make the characters' curves more apparent (butts, butts, butts), nipples get nommed, holes get creamed, it's all good, right ?
But what if I just wasn't seing the flaws of my own art properly ? Granted, it's a VERY UNLIKELY PROPOSITION, I'm awesome, but I mean look at this situation, someone is very popular with art of a questionable quality and instead of telling it to the artist I come here where I know I won't get any real backlash and won't hurt anyone's feelings. What if I inspired the same reaction and instead of criticizing my work, people who would are just moving on silently ?
I am content with the way I do things, I don't have great aspirations when it comes to my art. People often say "don't focus too much on finding your own style, just focus on being good !" BUT FUCK THESE PEOPLE. When I was a wee artist I wanted my art to look the way it does today. Now I'm just going to tweak it but chances are it'll never look drastically different from how it does today. What if it's as good as it gets ? Even forgeting the quality of it, what if the very style is something keeping people from getting invested in my art ?
Can you EVEN imagine such tasteless people ? I can't. I'm awesome.

Dragon's Dogma review. Kinda. More or less.
Posted 9 years agoI spent the last few days binging on the PC release of Dragon’s Dogma cos it’s a game I wanted to play badly for quite a while but didn’t have the console to play it. Turns out : my will to play it was, this once, not let down by the game. It’s pretty good.
But I’m not gonna finish it. Cos I feel like I’ve had enough. Cos it’s only pretty good. It doesn’t go beyond having nice gameplay, in fact everything else about it is meh.
The gameplay is fine enough, not without flaws, but in the end it is really let down by the unoriginality of it all. I don’t have a reason to go on, the game didn’t give me one.
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: A big part of the story is spent fighting at some evil cult until the Dragon comes and squashes its Palpatine-wannabe leader then plainly states “yeah, these guys ? They’re actually completely irrelevant, now come and fight me.” … So the game just outright confirms that I was right to not give a shit about anything I was doing.
They rip off scenes from Berserk with no apparent reasons, the story and its pacing are a freaking mess, the characters are void of any charisma, all the monsters are your standard boring DnD fare which is so bland that I can’t get hyped for anything even if they are fun to fight (a lot of the mechanics of the game come from Monster Hunter beside the climbing that is straight from Shadow of the Colossus, if it’s the same team that made both MH and DD I wonder why it’s so visually uninspired considering how unique and virbant MH is), all in all the game fails to suck me into its world and make me care about what I’m doing.
It’s not like the Souls serie to which it’s often compared to, where the atmosphere of bleakness really hits hard, where you’re eager to see what the game has for you next, because here’s what Dragon’s Dogma has in store for you : something you’ve probably already seen.
It’s funny cos both Dark Souls and Dragon’s Dogma have something in common beside their setting : nothing you do seem to matter. The difference between the game is how it’s presented. In Dark Souls, it feels hopeless all throughout and you eventually learn that indeed it doesn’t matter, that your struggles won’t really lead to anything better in the long run. In Dragon’s Dogma, it feels like nothing matters all throughout because the game, its story and lore are fucking stupid and irrelevant.
I felt the same way in Skyrim, expect it took me six hours to think I had my fill of it. It took 30+ for Dragon’s Dogma so hey, it definitely did something right. I don’t regret playing it, I enjoyed it and am not surprised by the flaws I found in it, I might even replay it with another class someday. I’m not dissappointed, I just wish I could have gotten invested in it.

Posted 10 years agoYou know when you're feeling stuck, having a bit of a situation that bothers you so but ultimately is only in your hand to fix if possible and there's nothing anyone can do about it but yourself ? I have that. And I'd love to expunge the feeling by ranting about it, complaining, just at least telling how I feel and why it distresses me. And you start putting it to paper, or pixels really, who writes that shit on paper, it's not like anyone is going to comment on your paper... Unless you scan it and post it somewhere. And finally then people can read about whatever it is that's going wrong.
But then you stop and think it over, not what you feel, but what the rant will bring you. It could bring you sympathy point. Which is all nice but where do you spend those ? I don't care much for sympathy. It could bring you advices ! Except, really, there's no advice that's going to fix your head. Well shit. It could bring you nothing. It could be ignored. Ultimately, even if it's not nice to feel ignored, it all comes down to that same point anyway.
Your useless rant is useless and you find yourself in the exact same situation you used to be before you wrote that bullshit. You just wasted time pouring your hear out and in the end you don't get anything for it. Yet there's nothing else you can do anyway. But if nothing you can write will make you feel any better, if you won't get anything out of it, why even bother pouring your heart out ? You might as well just write a useless rant about useless rants.

Posted 10 years agoEverytime I finish a comic there's that depressing period when nothing happens. You put all your thoughts and efforts into finishing something with the hope that "something" would happen but it never does, it takes a toll on you. Well it takes on on me anyway. I'm tired, dissappointed, depressed, and everytime I open photoshop I'm unable to get anything done. So I'm sorry for the one person who commissionned me and anyone who wants more comics or whatever but right now I'm taking a break. Probably not a long one, I don't know.
It's not like I need a break, it's not going to help since I feel like shit when I don't do anything but this informative I suppose. To whom might care.

Posted 10 years agoI AIN'T TAKING ANY RIGHT NOW. Not until I finish Fading Relic. Imagine that, it's the first time they're ever closed, not that it matters cos no one wants any. So eyj.
Anyway, I'll revamp ye olde PWYW model cos it's ye and it's olde. That is only because people keep asking the infuriating "hey what's a correct price for it ?" and everytime I'm like "nope I ain't answering that shite" and people go "poof" cos they wanted an answer I didn't want to give. THE POINT OF IT THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE TO PUT A PRICE ON IT YOU GIANT TOSSBUCKETS.
But Im going to now cos I am so tired of it. Probably 30$ for a normal picture and 60$ for comic pages. Prices would still be PWYW to a large extent, that would just be indicative of what I consider a fair price.
Anyway I'll repost a comission sheet once I feel like doing one. But for now it's irrelevant, as I'm not going to accept anything for probably a month.

I was compiling the various cute names given to wieners (weewee schwee wang dong etc) for undiscloseable reasons then it hit me. My mind is potentially blown. I've been blown by ding ding dong, you'll note it usually happens the other way around.
Also hello new watchers through Pertian's plug. 70+ of you, waow. There is a lot of you. I would assume this isn't the best way to introduce myself. Then again I don't have anything to say beyond "oh look I draw poop ENJOY"

But I didn't stop playing with that broken ass camera and went draw the thing soon enough so there we are. But I needed to ! My hair might have been gone soon afterwards, thus I needed a reference for comparison ! I had to indulge in mindless self indulgence !
NO ! I didn't have to ! It's just an excuse and I know it ! On top of that my camera is friggin busted ! You can't hardly get a decent picture out of it, you nimrod !
On the plus side, though, my camera is still completely busted. I mean... it's great.

Sidebar, Adblock...
Posted 10 years agoI see quite a lot of journal pop up about those two nowadays... What do I think about the sidebar ? I don't know why it's there. Does it bother me ? Not really. Would it bother me if it had some distracting advertisement right next to the artwork ? Potentially, yes. Would that be worth adblocking the site ? Yes, but it'd be better if that went along an e-mail explaining why you block the ads to an admin so the problem could be resolved without having to cut this passive funding.
Because this is what ads are. Funding. I do wonder how FA managed to remain without proper ad support but I understand why it's there and I also understand that adblock could hurt the site's revenue. Then again, these ads would be "made to work gracefully with Adblock without breaking site functionality". Whatever that means.
So all these talks of adblocking everywhere make me somewhat cringe. I hope those spreading the word to block ads do understand they're also blocking money from going to sites, even potentially hurting content creators who host their material on said sites. Obviously that last bit isn't the case on FA but I'm saying that as a general rule.
Whatever makes you feel justified in using adblock is fair game, I do use it as well when I get too annoyed -- bugger any website that has these videos starting randomly which you can't ever friggin find to shut them up. I'm looking at you, Escapit, Deviantart.
Still in the end this is the jist of it all : do you want to hurt a website ? Use adblock.
