I personally felt that the early and previous MLP incarnations and merchindise were way too bland and unenjoyable when I was a younger kid. The new reboot however, is funny, has memorable and lovable characters (that have actual depth to them) and overall, it has great production values with the writing, direction and animation.
I feel (in the review) that you were being rather nitpicky with your thoughts on the first five episodes and I also feel that your score is rather unfair if you honestly think those nitpicks made the show "average" in your eyes.
It's BLATANTLY obvious that the animation is flash animation (they are using Adobe Flash CS5 for the animation). I feel the most relatable character to me has to be Twilight Sparkle because she's smart but is trying to become social over the coarse of the show. The song Pinkie (yeah, her first name IS Pinkie, not Pinky [there's a difference]) sung was fun and enjoyable and I think the writers naturally felt a song would suffice that scene. It was meant to help them conquor their fear of the woods that Nightmare Moon posessed. Even in cartoons, there is such a thing as "their own" reality (it depends on the writing in the cartoon).
Just because a show looks like it's made for girls, that dosen't mean it automatically sucks. Animated shows like The Powerpuff Girls have had female leads and yet, no one complained about it back then, but the second another show comes along made by the same people (but with ponies and dragons), then APPARENTLY it's a bad show!
The brief flashback (at the beginning of part 1 and at the end of part two of the pilot) wouldn't kill a man, it actually helps the story and makes it all the more awesome for the climax...but you wouldn't know that, am I right? A cartoon and animated series ARE the same thing, you moron! They are both ANIMATION, no matter what shit you pull out of your ass and also, they don't ALWAYS need Lauren and Craig to make it work (that sounds rather biased to me)!
However, I will give you credit for both understanding why men (like me but I'm a teenager) like the show, giving the show a chance and watching MORE than just one episode.
In my opinion, it's honestly one of my favourite shows of 2011 and that's all I need to say...for now.
