CHARACTER DESIGN: Should I become a *Normal* species?
Posted 13 years agoWith all the trouble I've had getting my character drawn, despite providing some of the best references I could think of, EVERYONE wants to draw him with a kangaroo body and it makes me kind of want to turn my character into a normal species instead of a unique one.
If I did that, I think I could easily get a ton of people to draw him. Problem is it wouldn't be *him* at that point.
And as strange as it is to say, I refer to my character as "him" when talking about him, not as "me." He is a species that I created from scratch over ten years, slowly evolving minor details as time went on.
At the same time when I envision myself as a furry, or animal, or character, it is inevitably "him." I become him. He is a new "me."
And now, as I progress on my experiments , I am becoming two different embodiments of "me."
If I ever make a fursuit I guess it would have to be a hybrid of the two selves.
But that would only be a suit; my true self would, in the end, still be the two forms of me.

My car died and I'm having to hitch a ride to work each day for the cost of gas which is steadily rising in cost.
Rather then ask for donations I would like to raise money by offering up something others would like to put on their vehicles- or anything else a Pony would improve!

That "Artists Price Guide" going around: It's wrong.

Sorry, but I find it humorous how people use PIXELS as price guides.
Size only should matter when it comes to physical mediums: oils, pastels, paint, solid objects, etc.
When it comes to digital mediums, why would you charge people more for being able to print their paid for commission without it becoming pixelated? Would you really give someone a lower quality of work because your virtual space is at a different setting?
Digital medium commissions should be charged based on the quality and amount of work involved, not a limited file size.
To give an example there is one artists I watch that only does Icons. Their icons are SUPER DETAILED and high quality. The artists ALSO gives the commissioner a larger version of the icon. To me, I would not pay their price for JUST an icon, no matter how detailed it is. The quality they spent on it is there, but because of the size I couldn't enjoy it. On the other hand, giving me a larger version that I can print and hang up gives the commission what I consider an equal or added value to the price. Despite having the same amount of work involved in the creation process not skimping on the pixel size will only add value to the customer.
I'd have been far happier if the person who originally made the prior image gave quality of work examples and based their listed prices on that rather then a "Business published ALWAYS high quality required" price guide based on a size standard that doesn't effect the amount of work being done for the image.
(Hell, if you want to follow THAT images guidelines I'll make a MSPAINT image for you!)

I watch MANY people on FA, and many of them are doing things I plan to start doing-- things that I have planned to do for many years.
I am an artist that plans to do things far in advance. Its not that I Want to wait to do them, but all things I do cost money in one way or another. In order to do some things, I will plan out MANY things for it and keep them in mind until I have a way to do them.
I am also cost savvy; before I do anything myself, I will see if it's cheaper overall to go through someone else to do it. If I discover it'll be cheaper for me to do things myself then I will. Thats just the way I am, the way I think.
I have a total of 34 domain names registered (a few of them are repetitive to protect the domain.) You can check the domain registration if you want to verify the following dates; I've got no reason to lie about them.
furvert.com -2004-
A site I made to sell furry related merchandise. I was told by Anthrocon staff I couldn't use that name when I tried to be a vendor!
Chimerapet.com -2009- site for stuffed animals I plan on selling.
SHAMANMASK.COM -2009- site for masks I plan to make.
MYLITTLEPORNIES.COM and MyLittlefurries.com -2009+2011-

The character/ species was created in a lab as a "labor of love" by Dr. Soul, a genetic engineer who loves creating new life and improving the lives of those who exist. Some of his work may seem extreme to others but it's all for the better.
This species was a pet project of his, an attempt to create an entirely unique strain of DNA from scratch. After ten years of failure the work paid off-- even better then expected. The species is highly intelligent and only aggressive when it's "family" is being threatened.
Doctor Soul
- The Atomic Soul
Doctor Soul is an artist with a unique pallet; genetics. His desire is to improve "The Human Condition" by changing it from the ground up. Frequently he tests his genetic concepts by growing organs and attempting to create new species but for minor human experiments -- he tests on himself. Beyond the flesh he also seeks ways to help people improve their life-- be it financial, work, or simple advice that most people don't know.
Admittedly, he is a little psychotic; this is most ironic when he works for a Mental Health facility.

Posted 14 years agoI know I'm not the worst artist out there but I've always wanted to be in a creative position, I've always wanted to make things in my life.
Problem is, I seem to be mediocre at everything I've tried to do. Terrible at 2D despite having tried to draw for years. Soso at 3D despite loving to do it.
Trouble for me is I see 2D artists jump right into 3d apps (sculptris, ZBrush) and do things 10 times better then what I can do. I've done Maya for a while but I can't get anywhere near whats being made now. This isn't coming out of nowhere: I write this after trying to make a decent human head in Sculptris using my Wacom Intuos tablet and it looking like utter crap. I got the tablet a couple years ago thinking it would help me create on the computer, but the workflow just doesn't translate well for me. And my art certainly hasn't improved from it.
I'm not just giving up on art, but I'm beginning to think I've got no future in it. If I can't figure something out soon I'm not sure what I'm gonna do.
