We want your help!
Posted 9 years agoThis is it!
We want you!
What The Fur is turning 8 years old in 2017. And we’ve made a lot of progress in those 8 years. We’ve been the first convention to try many things. Some have worked, some haven’t. But as it is our 8th year, we’re on the lookout for new things. New people. New attractions. So we want your help!
We have several staff positions opening up this year, and several teams that need more people. As the convention grows, so does the team. And we want new people who are excited and want to help make the fandom a better place, and to make What The Fur into a spectacular convention!
If you think you have what it takes to join our team, let us know! Send an email to information[at]whatthefur.ca and tell us what you’d like to do on our staff! Whether it’s helping in a department like Registration, or running a department like Public Relations, or joining our Security team, we want to hear from you! What The Fur only exists because of hard-working, dedicated individuals. Bilingualism is definitely an asset, but isn’t required for many of the jobs.
Even if you don’t think you could be on our team, we still would love to hear from you! What ideas do you have for things we could do? What events would you like to see at What The Fur? We want to be YOUR convention. If you have an idea for an event you’d like to run, pass it along!
Let’s make What The Fur the best experience for everyone, together.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Posted 9 years agoWith the year 2017 quickly approaching, we at What Thine Fur would like to cordially invite you to celebrate with us! Over the past seven years, members of the kingdom of furry have converged upon the island of the Royal Mountain to celebrate, to enjoy the festivities and to encounter new people. This coming year will be only slightly different.
We would first like to announce that our court has managed to secure the appearance of an artist of distinction and of skill. This artist, who hails from the far away land known as "These United states of the Americas” – such an odd land to be sure – is known far and wide amongst those who share in the love of artwork. He keeps his artistry visible in such places as the Affinity of Fur, on the Art of Deviants, on Tumblr (what a strange name), and various other locales. Without further delay, we announce that our esteemed Guest of Honour for the year two-thousand and Seventeen is one E. C. Major.
ECMajor first discovered furry art as a teen at the turn of the century and quickly came to be fascinated by it. This discovery coincided with his own budding interest in making art a serious hobby and a possible career in the future, which catalyzed his desire to contribute to the furry fandom. He is self-taught and over the past decade and a half has evolved his own unique style, creating an iconic blend of traditional media (primarily graphite) and digital colorization to achieve a design-oriented style that is instantly recognizable to those who are familiar with it. He lives approximately 250km south of the border in rural New Hampshire and in addition to a passion for creating art, ECMajor also takes pleasure in other nerdy things such as pizza, Magic: the Gathering, and casual World of Warcraft. He also enjoys long, contemplative walks on the beach, but hasn't visited the sea often enough lately.
In the year 2017, we shall be returning to our home at the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire. Keeping in mind, of course, that our dates have changes from previous years. The dates of the convention are now the 28th to the 30th of July. And as we have this wonderful information available, we cannot keep it from you any longer.
Registration is now open on our website, available as a quick shortcut to http://register.whatthefur.ca. Our scribes are working hard to get the full system working, but in the meantime, you can use the temporary system to register. They have, however, managed to provide all of the relevant information on that page regarding the costs.
Also, your temporary residence (hotel) reservations can now be made! Simply go to http://hotel.whatthefur.ca for information and follow the links. If you are calling the hotel to reserve, please use the code AWF. This year, our room rates have lowered to an amazing $119/night for the standard 4 person rooms (no additional person fees!), and the suites are $149/night (plus $10/person over 2). All prices are without taxes. And as always at this hotel, Parking is free!
In closing, we would just like to thank you for the support shown over the years, and we are eager to see you at this year’s convention. We have a lot of stuff in store, and can barely wait to share it with all of you!
Cordially yours,
Felinaeus

Thank You and Announcements!
Posted 9 years agoBefore I get to the announcements, I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the OMG!WTF?BBQ! I hope everyone had a great time! I know I did! Thank you to the cooks who took over the grill from me, and thanks to Loopy especially for bringing the Melee gear! We have added over $200 to the convention funds for next year!
ANNOUNCEMENT TIME
What The Fur will officially be the weekend of July 28-30 2017!
We had to move our dates for a variety of reasons, but we hope that this will work for a lot more people, not being during the end of school, and not being so close to other conventions! So in 11 months we will be back!
We will be returning to the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire once again.
And our theme for 2017: Getting Medieval! We don't yet have our Guest of Honour confirmed, but once we do, you can bet we will let everyone know!
We will soon update our website, and we will let you all know when regular pre-registration will be happening!
So thank you again to everyone who joined us yesterday, both at the park and in spirit!

To calm the financial controversy
Posted 9 years agoHello everyone.
Some people seem to be questioning What The Fur, and where the fees we collect from registrations go. There also seems to be several misconceptions about how a convention is run. I am going to clear a few things up, and let people see exactly what goes into the convention, and why the amounts quoted and the claims made on several posts are invalid and incorrect.
First, let me point out that not every cost is going to be listed. We’re still tallying the receipts from this year’s event. Even buying Duct Tape gets accounted for. But these are general numbers that I currently have access to:
Hotel costs: $17815.84
(This is by far the largest category of expense. And every year it gets more expensive.)
Audio-visual rentals: $1609.65
Food (Chocolate Social): $475.00
(there are some pennies involved, but that’s not important)
Camera and photography: $244.89
Guest of Honour (hotel room): $614.08
Advertising: ~$2000.00
(Web, banner, business cards, flyers, posters, dealer tables at other conventions)
T-shirts: $1295.65
Conbooks: $912.21
Registration (Badges, computers, paper, ink): $1659.78
Other equipment purchases: $103.00
Total expenses: $26730.10
(Still getting the accurate total, but just what I wrote up above)
Now, total income from registrations: $21589.18
For a total loss of: $5140.92
Why so little from registrations? Keep in mind that I am giving approximate values, as Paypal and Credit Card transactions have fees we have to pay on each one. Also, we have 4 different registration periods, with discounts of up to $15 depending on when someone registers.
-Dealer helpers do not pay for their entry (that’s 18 people)
-Regular @ ~$40 to ~$55: 167
-Sponsor @ ~$70 to ~$85: 51
-Patron @ ~$140 to ~$150: 16
-Dealers @ ~$70 to ~$120: 40
-Day passes, Dance passes @ ~$12 to ~$32: 61
And this does not include the over $2100 for charity.
So, as opposed to the statement that we’re walking away with tens of thousands of dollars in our pockets, I am personally paying thousands to give you all a good weekend.
I hope this helps explain things.

Welcome to May
Posted 9 years agoGood morning agents.
As we are now after the 1st of May, this means a few things happened overnight.
1.We closed pre-registration for Sponsor and Patron levels.
2.We have completed the ordering of shirts.
3.Pre-registration is STILL available for Regular memberships, however the price has increased to $55.
4.We have, as promised, posted our day-pass rates on the website.
5.We have posted our hours for Registration.
Understand that the Thursday hours for badge pickup for Pre-Registered Agents is dependent on our timely arrival at the hotel. As the convention does not actually begin until Friday, the times for Thursday may vary.
From now until May 8th at midnight, you can still pre-register for Regular memberships, and the hotel is still offering our preferred room rate, depending on availability of rooms.
Later today we will be posting our preliminary schedule to the website.
So visit www.whatthefur.ca for all of the details on your mission.

Even Bond needed to sleep somewhere
Posted 9 years agoOfficially, the Holiday Inn & Suites Pointe-Claire Montréal Aéroport will stop offering the convention room rate (of only $129 CDN) as of May 8th.
However, there are already some days where the number of available rooms are running low. And we don't want you to have to stay at some other hotel: All the fun is at the main hotel!
Go and visit our hotel page, and click the link to get the details and to make your room reservations before we run out!

Declassification of The Charity
Posted 9 years agoGood day, Agents!
We would like to bring your attention to something that has been reported to us as an omission.
Every year, our agency collects donations from all kinds of sources in order to support our charity of choice, the Ecomuseum. To date, agents just like you and I have managed to collect over $15,000. As a goal for this year, we want to bring that total to over $20,000. Should we reach our goals, there might just be [REDACTED], and [REDACTED][REDACTED] but of course, you all expected that.
If you cannot be in attendance at the convention, but still want to help us support the charity, please contact us at information@whatthefur.ca. We will happily accept donations vis the usual channels and safe-drops. And don't forget: [REDACTED]
Good luck, Agents.

The world is in peril, and only you can help us keep it secure.
We know there are many experienced people out there. People with the knowledge and the skills to change the world. Well, if not change the world than at least to make a coffee. And coffee is essential to the smooth operation of our organisation.
But I'm getting off topic.
For our meeting in May, What The Fur is looking to find those agents able and willing to teach the new recruits. If you feel that you have what it takes, we would like to invite you to run a panel, host a workshop, run an event, participate in a discussion, play some music, dance your tail off, and all sorts of other things. All of this to the benefit of all.
Our programming team is looking for panel ideas, discussion topics, workshop offers, and game ideas.
The convention needs your help in showing the world what we can do. And, we will be including any panelists, workshop runners and MCs in the same rewards plan as our security, volunteers and DJs. Details can be found on our Volunteering page - http://whatthefur.ca/v3.html
So if you feel you've got what it takes, or you have a cunning plan, let us know! Go to our Programming page (http://whatthefur.ca/events/sub_prog.php) and send it in!
(Be advised, What The Fur does not condone the use of sharks with fricking lasers on their heads, nor angry sea bass.)

Posted 10 years agoAttention all secret agents!
Too many gadgets exploding in your face lately? A lack of support on your missions with the latest tools? Need a change of pace from all that action-y, in your face mission stuff?
Then we have the perfect mission for you!
What The Fur is growing, and with it, we need staff. Without staffers who help to run the con, we can't continue to put on such an amazing show. As such if you have the technical chops and energy to step up to the challenge, then we want you!
Currently the AV and IT departments are looking for staff that have experience with a wide variety of equipment. We're not going to bore you with the details, but if you've used a video camera (and no, we're not talking about your cellphone) or know what a network switch is, then drop us a line.
If you have a resume showing us your volunteer or work experience with any of these roles, all the better! If not, don't worry. Just let us know what you've done and with what tools & projects, etc. Training will be included so don't fret if you feel you may not have all the skills necessary.
Being staff can be very rewarding and helps to give us the ability to put on bigger and more technically spectacular events each year. Give us a shout now!

Urgent notice to all agents!
Posted 10 years agoThe new year is fast approaching, and that means several deadlines are as well! Your missions depend on action!
First: Early Bird Pre-Registration for What The Fur ends when the new year begins, so in order to save, you should register before the ball drops! And if you have not paid by the midnight deadline, your invoices will be changed to reflect the new rates. Visit our registration page at http://whatthefur.ca/registration/r.....stration16.php for all of the details you need to achieve success in your missions!
Second (Part 1): Special Agents, otherwise known as "Dealers” – your deadlines for payment are approaching as well! We have already fully booked our Dealers Room, and as such have started a waiting list for prospective dealers. Only payment will secure your place in the room. If you have not paid your registration by the changing of the year, you will be rotated onto the end of the waiting list and you might lose your place! Please check your email for directives from our Dealers Director. PLEASE NOTE: If you have registered but have received no mail from the Dealers Director in the last week or two, please email dealers[at]whatthefur.ca to advise the Director so she can forward you this time-sensitive information!
Second (Part 2): Did you miss out on registering for a dealers table? All hope is not lost! You can always register for the convention, and then get yourself onto the waiting list for a table by visiting http://whatthefur.ca/registration/waitlist16.php. If a space opens up, you will be given an opportunity to get one of the coveted tables. There are presently 14 half-tables (or 7 full tables) that are not confirmed.
Third: On January 2nd, 2016, there is an event taking place in Ottawa. The codename for the event is Pawprints in the Snow (though, as good spies you all know not to leave any prints in the snow). What The Fur has managed to infiltrate this event, and you will have the opportunity to register for WTFur there, in person. Further, we encourage all agents to infiltrate this event. Details are to be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/847269685389330 .
Calling all artistic agents!
Posted 10 years agoSpycraft is nothing new. In fact, in the movies it is and has always been a popular subject.
In order to help raise money for our charity, we would like to engage artists to help us out. Following on our theme, we would like to create a calendar. We are looking for artwork mimicking cinema posters for spy movies, television shows and books.
We have twelve to 18 spots open, and all proceeds from the sales of the calendars will go directly to the funds raised for the Ecomuseum.
The artwork used in the final product will be chosen by our staff, and the artists whose work is selected will receive a small gift and a large thank you from the convention.
Artwork should be 8.5” x 11”, preferably in landscape format, and of high resolution.
Questions and submissions can be sent to information@whatthefur.ca.
The deadline for submissions is February 29th 2016.

What The Fur 2016 writing contest
Posted 10 years agoSalutations
As you might have heard we, at What The Fur, will be hosting the 2016 Ursa Awards. In the spirit of these awards, we decided to revive a contest, to bring a spotlight on the artists that make our community brighter and better.
The contest in question is a writing contest; although stories will always be accepted in the convention booklet, these will have the potential to win a prize, while being published in another booklet that will be sent/given to those that participated.
The rules
- The limit for the submission is 1500 words and the theme is the same as the convention. (SFW only) (Secret Agent)
- There will be two ''categories'', based on language; one for French, one for English; the standards are the same for both.
- You can only submit once in each category.
- There will be winners (2) for each category.
-Word documents and WordPad documents are accepted (RTF, Doc, Docx)
Salutations
The contest will end at 25 April 2016, so there is time

Put your hands on your hips...
Posted 11 years agoHey! You want real time travel? Well, we're bringing back the 90s for our American friends!
Right now, we've worked the flux capacitor to set the exchange rates back to what they were about a decade ago!
But we can't guarantee how long the time warp will last (perhaps if you just jump to the left?).
Take advantage of What The Fur's lower pre-registration prices, and if you're from the US and decide to pay right away, you get the added bonus of a really good exchange rate!

September News
Posted 11 years agoThere’s a funny thing about time travel that most people don’t take into account.
When you travel back in time, or forward, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll end up in the same place. Physically. It is a constant danger when travelling forward or back. You might end up on the other side of the city, continent, planet, or (let hope never) it might leave you floating in space. So always remember to make sure your time travelling vehicle is sealed (or at least that the windows can roll up), bring an extra pair of socks (you never know), and your towel (The Guide got that correct).
We have some news!
In order of importance, we have a few major tidbits of news to give you.
The first of which is the most important
We have had to change dates!
What The Fur will now be held on the weekend of the 22-24 of May 2015.
We understand that this might cause issues for some people, and we apologise for this. But the change in dates being us to the second piece of news.
If this directly impacts anyone who has already registered, we ask you to please contact our Registration department as soon as you can.
We’re moving!
In 2014 we moved from the downtown area of Montréal to the West Island area following the closure of our home at the time, the Delta Centre-Ville. We made this tough decision because in the next few years, major changes to the highway interchanges will make it nearly impossible to get around the centre of the city – and any local can tell you how hard it already is to get around downtown. We did not want to put any of you through this nightmare. Moving to the West Island was seen as a great opportunity to find a new home for What The Fur.
Although the Sheraton was a very nice hotel, we listened to you, the attendees, and understood that the area was not up to the standards that you had come to expect. We heard you loud and clear; your message was strong and we have taken decisions accordingly. Once again, What The Fur will be moving. Yes, we know, nobody likes moving hotels, but we're moving to a location that will give you most, if not everything you asked for out of the convention's hotel.
We are moving to the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire.
The hotel, still in the West Island, is situated south on Highway 40, right across from one of the biggest super regional shopping malls on the island of Montreal, the Fairview Pointe-Claire Mall, as well as surrounded by plenty of restaurants for all budgets and tastes and stores for any needs you might have. And most of which are within walking distance!
You also told us that our event space was too spread out; with this new location, everything is all together, making it easier than ever to move through space (we’re not sure about time yet...). Not only that, but we heard you about the hangout space (the "zoo” as so many of you called it); you’re getting that back! We’re still in discussion about getting enclosures though...
And to top it off, parking is free!
Early Bird pre-registration is still going on!
Keep in mind that our Early Bird pre-registration period is open until December 1st, where you can get your memberships for a much lower rate. On December 1st the prices will go up for everything except for our Patron level of membership.

The time is almost here!
Posted 11 years agoWhat The Fur kicks off in 2 weeks! That's 14 days! That's... umm... not a lot of hours (relatively)!
Tonight at midnight we close pre-registration so we can get to work putting together the envelopes for everyone. So if you haven't yet registered, go and do it now! Otherwise you'll have to wait until the convention itself to register.

What The Fur: A Steam-Powered Celebration

Lodgings (Hotel News)
As from our previous messages, the hotel has sold out of rooms with two double beds. But there are still rooms with King beds available! And even suites where you have a kind and a double-sofa bed! So if you’re still looking to book a room, there are options available.
Also, the Sheraton has graciously extended the room reservation dates to May 6th. That gives you two weeks from today to reserve your rooms in the hotel at our rate. After that date, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to get the WTFur room rates.
http://whatthefur.ca/hotel/hotel.php
Room and Ride Shares
If you missed our small messages over the last few weeks, we have added a page to our website for room and ride shares. It is a place where people can post their info if they are looking to share a room with someone, looking to carpool to the convention, or have spaces in their rooms or cars to share. People are coming from all over, so if you want to offer space, or want to barter for a space, that’s the place to do it! http://whatthefur.ca/hotel/room-ride.php
Registration
With the extension of the hotel dates, we’ve decided to also extend the pre-registration deadline. That means you have two more weeks to register for the convention and save yourself a little bit of money in the process! And though our Regular and Sponsor levels will be available at the door, the Patron level will not be.
2014 T-shirts will also not be available after pre-registration ends! They are available as an add-on to your registration, or with a Sponsor or Patron membership.

Charitable actions (and auctions)
Every year, What The Fur raises charity donations and provides them to the Ecomuseum Zoo. The Ecomuseum zoo’s operations are not subsidized. They are covered by admissions and other revenues, whereas the renewal and development of its infrastructures depends primarily on donations and fundraising activities. What The Fur has been a proud sponsor since 2010, raising over $9000 to date. If you have a little spare change (those Twoonies weigh a lot in your pockets and purses), toss it into the charity bucket!
Also, What The Fur holds an auction, where proceeds also are donated to the Ecomuseum. If you are an artist or one of our dealers, please consider putting something into our art show for our charity auction. Even if you’re just attending the convention, and you think you have something you’d like to put in our auction, we’ll gladly add it to the list! Just bring it with you to the convention! (Americans: Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback are like money around here!)

What The Fur strives to provide everyone with one of the best convention experiences available, offering a cozy, friendly atmosphere. But we like giving people something to do and something to learn as well! And we could never do that without help from you! We’re still accepting offers to run workshops and panels, to sit on group discussions, or even to participate in some of our events! If you have something you’d love to share, teach or show, let us know! http://whatthefur.ca/events/programming1.html
Dance your heart out
Saturday won’t just be the day we all wait for the dance to start. We’ll be hosting our first ever Dance Competition! And we’d like to hear from you if you want to enter! This goes for fursuiters and non-suiters alike.. We want to know if you’ll be participating, and if so, and you have a particular piece of music in mind, let us know so we can get things ready! Shoot us an email to dance[at]whatthefur.ca to let us know.
And then, later in the evening, we will start out our dance with a Chronographic Reception, our Steampunk-Themed Masquerade ball, so break out the Bowlers and braces (but please, leave your bigger clockwork guns at the door). Then it will move on to the dance everyone craves.
Are you looking to perhaps entertain your fellow con-goers with musical magic? Then you're in luck! We're still taking applications for DJs for our dance! If you're thinking of being a DJ, we just need a little bit of information from you. To make sure we can select DJs that fit, not only with the con but witheach other, we'd like to know what kind of music you would like to play. To that end, please fill in theform on ourDance page, and we'll get to making our selections!

Help make it better for everyone
Like mentioned above, we couldn’t do this without you. We do this to put smiles on faces, and sometimes we work tirelessly to make that happen, but the end result is always worth it. If you have some time to give, let us know. We’ll happily welcome you to our volunteer team. Just send us an email to volunteers@whatthefur.ca, or fill in the form on the website to let us know you’d like to help. We need wranglers and referees, gophers and guides, help with setup and teardown. There’s no lack of opportunity. As well, we’ll be trying to toss a few rewarding things your way, like early exclusive access to the Dealers Den and some nice, front-row seats at the events.

What The Fur: A Steam-Powered Celebration
May 23-25 2014 - Montreal, Quebec, Canada
www.whatthefur.ca
Lodgings (Hotel News)
As from our previous messages, the hotel has sold out of rooms with two double beds. But there are still rooms with King beds available! And even suites where you have a kind and a double-sofa bed! So if you’re still looking to book a room, there are options available.
Also, the Sheraton has graciously extended the room reservation dates to May 6th. That gives you two weeks from today to reserve your rooms in the hotel at our rate. After that date, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to get the WTFur room rates.

What The fur is no exception.
Saturday night, Starting in the evening and running right through until the wee hours of Sunday morning you can dance your hearts out!
It all starts with the Chronographic Reception, our Steampunk-Themed Masquerade ball, so break out the Bowlers and braces (but please, leave your bigger clockwork guns at the door). Then it will move on to the dance everyone craves.
